Wow !! Pigpen and Greg trading lead vocals and harmonizing a bit. Berry and Phil trading and Duane and Jerry ! This should be in some jam hall of fame. Incredibly clean sound. Pure joy and gratitude !
Had the privelege of seeing Allmans 4 times and Dead twice. Seeing both together was never in the cards for my generation. One of those things that have been lost to history since my parents were young.
The only performance by The Allman Fleetwood Grateful Brothers Dead Mac Band. It may not light your fire, but if you listen carefully and you are tuned into the styles of Peter Green, Danny Kirwin, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, it is a magical moment. In Dark Star performed before this it is interesting to hear people come on stage and join the mix.
My second Dead show. 10th row. Allmans opened and blew me away. Dead came on at some point (I think Love was the middle band, but hey. . . 45 years clouds the memory!) and played 2-3 songs without a lot of energy, and then ABB and three members of Fleetwood Mac came on . Felt like a 3 1/2 hour non-stop jam from there. I later met Peter Green up in Vermont that fall. Those were strange times! And I see Dead & Company in a week. This music never gets old . . . and it ain't ever gonna end.
I'm looking at the above picture in "Grateful Dead 365", a lot sharper. Oh to be those guys and gals standing there nine rows in front of you. Or the crew in the wings. Amazing.
This is hands down my favorite Grateful Dead song and this is one smoking hot version too. I am so glad that they allowed tapers and because of that, their music will grace future generations for years to come. Who knew back then we were on the threshold of Rock and Roll history? We were just a bunch of hippies wanting to have fun and feel good. I guess if you do what you love, then the rest will follow. Follow your bliss!
I was there. I had monumentally flunked out of SUNY College of Forestry at Syracuse University. I had been to Woodstock the previous summer and was living in Bryn Mawr, PA. I drove to the Fillmore that night from Philly with three friends. We all took acid before we left. I was driving. We didn't know there was going to be an opening act. Jerry Garcia had to explain who they were. Of course they were amazing. The Dead did a set and took a break to Casey Jones. Then the lobby had about four or five Hell's Angels riding circles right there in the lobby of the Fillmore. It was filling with smoke and noise. Then both bands played till after sunrise. I went around the corner after and saw Mountain Girl and a very tired Phil Lesh. It was an amazing night. Some of my memories might be a tad clouded by the acid. Or maybe not.
Before Pigpen died, the GD were a great band, with the help of a couple of outsiders. Peter Green, and Duane Allman. It's time to respect them. Peter Green is still alive, just give him the respect he deserves when he was THE best white blues guitarist on the planet!!!!
@@duckman531 I was born some 20 years after that era, but with the music available to me today, just at my fingertips, I can listen to this here and a good amount of late 60s early 70s Dead and Allman Bros. Truly thankful for that. It's easily my favorite era for both bands. Personally, Duane is my favorite guitarist of all time. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed Live at Stony Brook 9/19/71 solidified that for me. Not to mention Dickey Betts is unreal on that jam as well.
@09jackstraw -Yeah, isn't incredible? Everytime I listen to it I hear something new. Love the vocals as well, Pigpen, Greg Allman and Bobby.... magical..!!
I was only 17,and totally ripped.we came down to dance in the back.everyone,I mean everyone was boogiing.wow.those Fillmore shows were historic.i m so so lucky to have been there.
for those who want a taste of Peter Green's Fleetwood mac, he and Danny Kirwan (RIP, Peter and Danny) are front and center at 4:30, with Kirwan's ferocious vibrato in the lead. gold.
Epic! Oh my Lord, so frickin' epic! Thanks for posting this gem. All these years and I never heard this one. And the link to so I can get it all! And Peter Green too! I love it, Phil just wants to listen to Berry. that tells you where Mr. Oakley stood in the pantheon of great bassists.
That's all I wanted to listen to too..... Berry was such an influence on me , and I didin't even realise it. This is PURE GOLD. Thank You for posting this gem. Allman's, The Dead, and Peter Green will live on FOREVER !
for a bit you can hear Berry singing a bit. My old man was here at this show, and told me about 5 years before I found the tape back in the 90's. He went down to see Duane. He also said Mic Fleetwood was playing and there was a man on a unicycle riding around with a water gun filled with acid blasting everyone coming into the show. thats classic
I need know Book on the Greatful Dead We lived it from 1970 on where ever they Played Thanks for thr Great recording's chasefukuoka61 , Keep them coming! You are a great Line to the Greaful Dead Music. I look for your stuff first!
One of the cool things of the track is: That's Berry Oakley playing bass through most of the track! his style was so driving and very different than Phil's, really hear it 11:00 on
Anyone else out there go to this show? I was 18 and a student at Columbia University. 10th row in the middle and witness to a 3 1/2 hour jam with three of my all-time favorite guitar players (Jerry, Peter Green and the immortal Duane Allman). All for $4.50. 42 years later, I saw Furthur this summer knocking the crap out of Jack Straw and other tunes in Providence. This music ain't ever gonna end! Let it shine!
Too friggin' cool!! Although the one on LIVE DEAD is probably my favorite version still. It's just all good, even when they had an off night, they were the shiznai!!!!
#421 Fonzi Shame on the 10 individuals who put up Negative Fonzi. You people have no taste and I wonder y u wood even click the link. And 4 who ever wants to grade my grammar, go ahead being u r more worried about it than I😉 I need a time machine for this night and then onto Watkins Glen. Absolutely amazing hours in Rock-n-Roll history😁⚡🎶🎧🎸
In the picture, it looks like Dickie on the far left, next to the guy with his hands in the air...Jerry and Berry are behind the drummers, Phil standing behind Greg...it kinda looks like Pigpen's playing guitar in this pic!
Peter Green, and Danny Kirwan. And you accuse the Brits of being "provencial". The only two guitarists who matter from this concert are Duane Allman, and Peter Green. I'm so sick of covering for Jerry Garcia, and Bob Weir.
Duane Allman all day long for ne.Nobody has anything close to the magic he produced. Is that Bob Weir center stage? God, he was terrible...as were the Dead.Peter Green talented but didn't blow me away, you know?
Wow !! Pigpen and Greg trading lead vocals and harmonizing a bit. Berry and Phil trading and Duane and Jerry ! This should be in some jam hall of fame. Incredibly clean sound. Pure joy and gratitude !
It definitely would win a Jammy if such an award existed.
The two greatest American bands of all time on stage together!!!
And Peter Green!
Had the privelege of seeing Allmans 4 times and Dead twice. Seeing both together was never in the cards for my generation. One of those things that have been lost to history since my parents were young.
Pigpen, Gregg, Jerry, Duane, Berry, and Phil all on the same stage. WOW

Saw this show when I was in High School..

SisterRayVU68 THANK YOU
The Dead were never the same after Pigpen died. They were still very good, but not like they were from 1966 to 1972.

Kirwan was the best guitarist on that stage, imo.

If I could get into the TARDIS, this show would be my one & only destination. Where else would I go?😁
Duane allman, Peter Green and Jerry Garcia together... Need i say no more. I would sell my unborn kids to go to this show, word.
Hands down my favorite Grateful Dead cover song. Especially the 69 - 71 Lovelights
I saw that show. Actually, I worked it....lot's of fun if ya know what I mean!
absolutley incredible!
I don't think words could put it into perspective what it must have been like to have been there!
same, that book is so wonderful.Lesh's delightful narrative turns the description of a Dead jam into a thrilling adventure
I got this on a bootleg tape back in the mid 70's it's been one of My favorite tapes ever since
i literally just read about this in phils book and stumbled across it the next day. how bout it.
Oh, and thank you most kindly for the upload!!!! =-)
I used to have a board of this show. Great "NFA" opener.
This song pierces my ear drums so good.
Grateful, always.Lifted the soul on a down day.

I would have liked to have heard the two together. Their styles would have complimented each other.
You said it all!!
@philagerryberry714 - hey, thanks so much man. They were indeed the band beyond description.
Wowwwww
@wingman572 - yessssss...!
🔥🔥🔥
I never knew the dead played with the all mans. At the beginning of the song, I couldn't figure out who was singing but at the end, it's Greg all man.

@astroworms - it's amazing to listen to, isn't it?
love pig
Bill Graham was the best concert producer as this is the most ferocious version.
Grateful Green anyone?
If you're wondering what happened to the cheering at the end that wasn't for another 19 minutes, but YT didn't allow 15+19 min back then.
yeeeear!
@DEEPMOODYPURPLEBLUES -you are most very welcome.
you are forgetting dickey betts
Yowza!
Duane & Johnny Winter going after each other from 4:30-6:30.....?
?
Say no more...

Where was Dicky Betts?

Kevin Mullins well, I could be wrong, that may be Peter Green on the far left, but that guy looks a bit thinner than PG, to me
Kevin Mullins lol its mick fleetwood.
pranks fer sharin
dank tunage
chasefukuoka61: I want to have your babies. (And I'm a guy.)
(The link is brilliant)

Jerry could play, but he had bad nights too. he did a great job of crafting songs with Robert Hunter.
SisterRayVU68 Kirwan and Betts were incredible. what are you smoking?
Peter Green was the best white blues player of the history... Check out the Fleetwood mac live at amsterdam bootleg. Trust me, you WILL be blown away
Love this stuff but Danny kirwan needs to shut up!
Horrible BS... I never had much respect of the dead, although I love Garcia... This jam does nothing for me.
So you just HAD to let everyone else know this?
So glad they kicked out the jamhaters :P
What a clown
