Man it's a time gone and I missed it. I was 13 when I started listening and it changed my life. 1992 was ny first cassette Europe 72, been Dead ever since.
The blues have always bruised my soul, and I'm forever thankful to Pigpen for hooking me into one of the greatest bands in the history of music. God bless and rest that man. R.I.P. Ol' Blue Ron Mckernan.
The first time I saw the Dead (Jan. 2, 1970), I was 10 feet in front of Pigpen (fifth row at the Fillmore East). He was the coolest dude I have ever seen. All goodness, all soul, all the time. He was the heart of the band then, and we all miss him even now. Can you imagine the arc this band would have had if he and Jerry were still alive and well? Ooo-ee!
Team Pigpen here -> before I knew much about the band I only had that 2nd Dick's Pick and a few studios, could never figure out the vocals on some of those really good tracks you know, like Easy Wind, Operator, etc it all makes sense now
40 years today, Forever Grateful Forever Dead, rest in peace Ron in the words of phil lesh from the song Box of Rain "Such a long long time to be gone, and such a short time, to be here"

Never was Dead fab, BUT, I accidentally ran across this version. Blues have always been my favorite and this is the best version I've head of this song and it definitely ranks #1 on my list along with Clapton's version. I can't play one without playing the other. Keep making us cry. Long live the blues.
there's a video up of Easy Wind 8/30/70 on youtube, another Dead blues jam and one of my favorite versions they ever performed. Highly recommend even if you're not a deadhead.
i was about 3 months old when this was out, im not much of a fan of the greatful dead, but i just bought this on itunes, and must have played it about 20 times in a row. a very good song!
Damn...such a defining tap root for the band. Jerry's slide solo and Pig's vocals and harp are iconic to homegrown American music. One of my favorite chapters. Thank you Park Lots for the video.
Absolutely wonderful!!! Many thanks for posting this. I'm really thinking now that 71/72 GD is the epitome and when PP went they lost that great blues touch. Damn they were good though!
@@carolnelson4433 I was lucky enough to visit Stinson Beach a few times about 20 years ago... being a Dead Head and reading about the acid tests, I always felt like I was visiting hallowed ground. Cheers to you, and your beautiful home town!
Whiskers B 100% disagree. They already have their balls to the wall psychedelic stuff, and their cowboy Bobby songs. They already had 2 drummers and a piano player and Jerry and hunter were coming up with new songs all when pig was still in the band. And when pig was in they still had their good ole classic blues. Pig was a incredible harp player and reminded the dead and their fans where their roots were. The band wasn’t the same without him.
I love this era. Pig still belting out the blues and turning other songs into wicked jam sessions. Just Billy behind the drums and Jerry on the Strat. And not to mention Keith playing piano.
I never much cared for the the Dead, because were I was from, radio only played, I will survive, when I heard this version of Elmore's legendary tune, I never stopped listening to, THE DEAD. U DA MAN PIG PEN, R.I.P
Awesome ..I am jamming ..Wow Sugarhollow 1970 would have been Amazing ! I was 9 yrs later ..God Bless ..I am Stoned as fuck hahaha going to Ireland soon !!! Deutschland Rocks ...my other HOME ..Love ya all
feckin' smokin'. the footage of Jerry's slide solo is phenomenal. these cats were at the top of their game here. right, i've always preferred those times when Billy was the lone drummer. love Mickey, but this is just more pure Grateful Dead to me. your mileage may vary.
You said you was hurtin', almost lost your mind; 'the man you love, he hurts you all the time. when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too. he loved another woman; yes, but I love you But you love him, and stick to him like glue. when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too. You love him more, when you should love him less. Why pick up behind him yes and take his best? when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too. said goodbye baby im gonna pack my case Lord i know ill never ill never take his place when things go wrong, lord ,lord its alright with you it hurt me too
Jerry said Pigpen didn't even want to be in a band but he was such a great blues singer they "forced him" into it. I'm picturing them in heaven with Jerry on lead, Brent on keyboards and singing the high harmonies maybe Keith moon on drums. Pigpen and Amy Winehouse out front playing songs like this and smoking a big joint with Jesus I'm sure he's a fan of the blues considering all the crap he's been through 😊
I don't know why I was thinking of old Ron. Took Jerry. Awhile to get the grove but pigpen nailed it. Feeling expression. Who did piano w Ron singing. He didn't rush... RIP old guy
Pig would have been 73 today-i had a pin with his pic on it that i wore in my motorcycle jacket, placed where it would be right next to my heart.WALSTIB.
Imagine how much pressure Jerry felt when Pigpen passed.... now he would have to carry most of the vocals, both frontman and lead guitar....these folks are right, Pigpen was a very important piece of the band in 69,70........ after all a great Chicago blues band would need a harmonica, right....
Aw Pigpen!! Good memories of him and me swimming in the ocean at Stinson Beach with our dogs summer of 1971💙🙏
What?
Now that’s a memory
@@RustBelt68she said what she said

To this day, Pigpen's voice and Jerry's guitar hits me deep in the soul. Hope he's jamming with Janis and Jerry in heaven.
If this song doesn't give you chills, you have no soul!!!
Hey Pigpen: When things go wrong, wrong with you, it hurts me too. RIP you blues madman!

Amen I second this
Pigpen RIP, 4ever..... Best singer in the Dead... Garcia always said it.... Pigpen was the lead singer of our blues band....
agree
Leaves me speechless..
All feeling.
When emotions grow, and heavier. The sound of this music makes you feel better.
Love the Pigpen era Dead!!
That's the only time they ever had any balls or REALLY rocked.
@@xianshep I love them all
tis is the best era of dead
It was my father’s favorite era too
The only way to improve this here is to turn it up.
Amen.

sugarhollowdaddy1: Very groovy man, VERY groovy!! 😎👍
so lucky
With Pig as frontman the dead was a totally different band, much more opportunity for each member to shine in their own way
2/13/70 Fillmore East right up front. First show.

This gives me chills from the first note!!! Nothin like the Good Ole Grateful Dead!
Like fine wine, a very good year.
Same here. Jerry's axe sings so beautifully!!

Since my old man showed me this performance I must have watched this 100x thanks man!!!
Thanks for singing this Blues on the day I was born Pigpen, Happy Dead Day every day y'all!
O how I wish Pigpen never died. What a voice!
Good old Grateful Dead! What a treat that was, thank you!
Such a beautiful, talented soul.... we love you so much Pigpen!!!❤️
This song is my favorite dead song to sing, it's very powerful, and full on blues!
yes great cover!!!
i never had the chance to see him, he was a genius.... am again delving into the dead soul....
i think of Pigpen and soul the name "howling wolf " is right up there , the friendship of pig and J. Garcia
was right there to see and hear !
this is the Dead lineup I got more accustomed to, Pigpen Mackernan brought such quality to the band's sound.
Pig was KILLIN the harmonica this night🇺🇸😎
i was about 3 months old when this was out, im not much of a fan of the greatful dead, but i just bought this on itunes, and must have played it about 20 times in a row. a very good song!

Jerry channeling Elmore James. Love it.

Thought I had heard most Dead numbers. Always a new one in the box. Thanks
I'm here again because it's been exactly fifty years since we lost Pigpen on March 8, 1973.
I see why the women with "soul" loved Piggy 🌹❤️
+Stella Blue, yes! it makes me so nostalgic!! pigpen used to come to our cabin on Stinson beach to hang out ,swim and let our dogs play together...

A rare sighting of Lesh playing fingerstyle! I’ve seen footage of multiple instances in 70-71, this is the only one from 72.
Best version ever of this Elmore James classic, IMO. Sad that Pigpen died so young ...
He was only 27
