I don't think you'll find too many drummers who are completely in the "zone" and spontaneously feeding off the whirlwind of sound around them and making it look so effortless! This is completely amazing playing!
one drummer i saw on this stage about a month ago that reminds me of what youre saying is Bill Stewart. amazing dynamics just like Blade, in the zone always. drums sounded immaculate
Thank's Brian! Simply great! If every drummer (musician) would play with your musicality, your intensity & your joy, the ''today's music would be a lot better & spiritual! May the Lord bless you all on this gig! Chick is probably very happy!
Surprised nobody compares Blade to Jo Jones with all that smiling. When you're that happy and into what you're doing its most likely going to sound great.
Vinne col as brilliant and revered as he is , Brian blade brought a lot more to the 5 piece band when he replaced him. He doesn’t do flash for flash sake or drum chops , a different sensibility. (And I love Vinnie ) , but I saw the difference there and here. Maybe vinnes problem if he has one ,lol is he has to much chops , ridiculous virtuosity etc, I’ll be slaughtered for saying this. Anyway I love Brian blade , he brings great drama and energy to all the music he plays on, in a very natural organic way , him and Marcus Gilmore are my guys.
not sure what set this is... but i was sitting just behind Brian... perfect view ! (directly to the right of this vid) was un real!! (pretty sure i'm the "Whooo" yeller ...sorry !) Coloradowildman... more details on this? 1st set? 2nd? date 10/26?
Miles played it (a Zawinul tune) with all his groups from 1968-71. Two studio versions and plenty of live cuts were recorded. Weather Report also did it.
@@Quantumlogik I think Chick is the Rhodes player on a live album of the Miles band at the time, DeJohnette, Holland, I forget who on sax, probably Grossman, unless its still Shorter, he might have been the hold out at that point
@@samferguson9171 There's a gang of "Directions" versions with Jack D. ; they start with the Dave/Chick/Wayne band, 1968 or 69; continue through the Isle of Wight and Fillmore live sets (swap out Wayne, swap in Steve Grossman and then Gary Bartz) and carry on through the semi-live "Live-Evil/Cellar Door" sessions (swap out Chick and Dave for Keith and Michael Henderson).
I can only imagine it, trying to solo when the drummer is constantly switching all over the place. As good as a drummer this guy is, i have no idea for who he is playing for here. It's almost like he is trying to mimic someone else, while overplaying. To me, the heart of improvisation is just sometimes locking things down, not open up every time, all the time. As a drummer myself, this is frustrating to listen to. The drummer is literally chocking out the rest of the band, no one else has room to do anything. The drummer is not playing for the music, but for the audience. Miles would've kicked his ass after this crap.
I see Your point but am not sure You are picking up what is happening here. He is Different than Jack and He is Adding a Ton of Energy to this. I would have played less bc I Am Not Brian Blade but I Loved this.
There is No Living Jazz or otherwise Living Drummer Today who can Touch This Man. He's Fucking Amazing.
Brian Blade's different approach to the drum part on this iconic piece improves it. He is such a treasure.
Marcus Miller does such a good job of keeping the bass simple so the soloists and drums can shine.

He's Brian...
Enthralling. A masterclass is dynamics good groove and inventiveness. Totally unique voice.
Man, Brian is playing so melodically and dynamically. Its almost like hes playing the piano because he addresses the song so musically.

he is on fire, love the playing and energy!!
WoW just can’t believe what I see ! Incredible band and master at work ! Thanks for posting !
Nobody on planet earth has more fun playing music than blade
Great personality behind the Drums. Great Passion. Brian Blade.
Thank's Brian! Simply great! If every drummer (musician) would play with your musicality, your intensity & your joy, the ''today's music would be a lot better & spiritual! May the Lord bless you all on this gig! Chick is probably very happy!
Thanks for this video! So great to get to watch one of the best up close. Brian is the man!
sooooooo funky. goodness gracious.
Quite possibly the only drummer who smiles more than Stanton. Gotta love watching pure bliss.
Except for the late great Billy Higgins...listen to Lee Morgan's "Zip Code"; you can here him smile through the speakers!
He has fun playing drums ... very symphatic !!!! Greetings from germany 👍👍👍👍👍

Brian always teaches me a lesson in being unafraid to emote.
True, you can see his joy shine through in his playing
Awesomeness! ♡
That's one hell of a line up...

Directions, that's one of Coreas favorites.
Blade in the Cut.♚
i love how these guys can just read first go!
Explosive! looks like Brian is channeling Tony..
He channels Tony and Elvin, a LOT
Totally, with maybe a taste of hip hop in his style imo.
Great Comments. I Agree.
Makn shit look easy. And it is easy when your brilliant!!!
Nicholas S. Shit? Why would you call it that?
+Alan Morrow, it's an expression!
i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it
2:39 wow!
The way he explodes into a high dynamic blazing fast phrase and then refrains from crashing out of it is just masterful!
This is the best thing ever
That Gingerbread Boy quote at 3:40!
Brian can Swing, Funk, He can do it all. Nice tension build at 4:30.

busy drumming at its best.
R.I.P. Wallace
Anyone know if this is a recorded song? I need this in my life.
they're basically playing a version of miles davis' "directions"
Miles played it (a Zawinul tune) with all his groups from 1968-71. Two studio versions and plenty of live cuts were recorded. Weather Report also did it.

Brian Blade: The Reactor.
was Dejonette drumming the original drummer in the studio version?
He's on the Cellar Door recordings and I believe that one bootleg series installment that came out a few years ago... the Fillmore one, I think.

Here's who let the drumkits completely offset in the studios.....
What's up lil bro
It's like you're in a deep dialogue with the God who rules everything in the universe and beyond nothingness to the unlimited power of eternity
Diggin on Brian, so happening!!!! Jimmy Strassburg
anyone realize how low and weird he sits?!!
Yeah, Yet he still plays and sounds great, cheers bro lol
Vlade Guigni yo! Lol and ya he fucking rips
Bro...
It’s fucked up that he was still making money off Miles Davis’ name, 20 years after his death. Some are doing it even now.
Need a new camera man.
I hear ya! Its a spontaneous, bootleg video shot on an iphone... But if you want to get me a new camera, I'll take it man! :-)
coloradowildman1 any idea what that left side closet to you is? Old A Zildjian?
Either an old K or a Spizz.

You have no idea what or who you’re talking about
Haha you have no idea how ridiculous you sound 😂
