Can we all agree that Ellen Foleys bit of Paradise by the dashboard light is the best bit of the song?
Right On!!
Dead heat. Ellen or Carly. Both fantastic.
She's got a beautiful voice, not doubt, but I've always hated that stupid song. Just sayin'. BUT....she also sang on Blue Oyster Cult's "Mirrors".....epic.
The very best bit
So glad she's collecting royalties for that
Totally underated, loved you Ellen for 30 years. I'm Australian and been following you my whole life as keep rocking chick, your amazing ❤
Her voice, to me, just represents or even defines a part of the 80-ies
Incredible powerful voice...
what a criminally underrated artist. This is incredible
Great voice, but no good songs. I’d say she’s appropriately rated.
I totally agree. A friend ran into her at a party in early ‘84. Asked her ‘what happened after Night Out? That was a great record. “I fell in with the wrong crowd.”
RIP My dad, Benny, who worked the store on the corner of 89th and Broadway (where this was filmed) for 40 yrs. I worked there too. Love you Ellen, miss you.
ibji I visited New York in November for a big family holiday. It was exactly how I thought it would be. 100 miles an hour , and I was supposed to be on holiday. I bet your dad was a special person. Must have been good to see the old place were he and you worked on this film. Good luck fro the UK
Memories!
Ellen still alive according to Wikipedia, you mean RIP 4 your dad I presume (sorry about that).
@@dirk7154 Sorry, didn't mean the RIP for Ellen, sorry it got taken that way
Always liked Ellen Foley. Such a beautiful woman, still is today. ‘Paradise by the dashboard light’ is a great song, but ‘We belong to the night’ really does her great voice justice. So much power coming from such a fragile woman. Song still moves me to this day. Pity they hardly play it on the radio these days.
Sadly all the kids of today want to hear is the kpops and jpops and the similar rubbish, and not to mention the rubbish from the like of Justin ieber. Can't sing, can't play an instrument, can't write a song., yet because they can wiggle their ass, they become millionaires
"We Belong To The Night" is such a awesome power ballad,it really deserves a re-release,one of the best ever !
yeah, that's gonna happen
I never get tired of this song. For me one of the classics. Ellen Foley has such a great voice. Very underrated singer. And easy on the eyes as well.
I absolutely adored Ellen Foley as Billie Young on the second season of Night Court. It's only now that I'm putting the pieces together that this is the same girl who sung on that Meat Loaf song. The featured song, We Belong to the Night, is a passionate and beautiful song and according to Wikipedia was a #1 hit in the Netherlands! Good to see you again Ellen!
Big Pipes!
Same for me. Such an amazing woman
So did I ❣️
Would be cool if she does a guest star on the new Night Court.
I Just loved Ellen still, I just wish she made more albums . Amazing voice, presence
Very powerful voice. I'm surprised she wasn't massively successful.
She was doing a lot of gigs, making it hard for her to be noticed for any one specialty talent. She was a solo pop artist, background vocalist for other acts, broadway performer. She had a brief singing cameo in the 1979 movie musical, Hair. Then she played the public defendant on Night Court before Markie Post got that role. She wasn't booted off the show. She had other gigs.
Wow! Did not realize she was in Night Court. What an amazing talent. Anything she touched turned to gold.
She did such a great job on Paradise..That Lennnon-like scream "I gotta know right now!" was so friggin' awesome..
What a voice. Meatloaf can have his own show. This is about Ellen.
So much power in her voice
Such a powerful voice! Ellen is amazing.
Powerful is the perfect word to describe Ellen’s vocals. TV, stage, recording studio. What a career.
Love Ellen. I’ve been a fan for years.
Love Ellen’s voice. Paradise by the Dashboard Light was my very first 45 RPM record. Didn’t realized she acted until I saw her in Night Court when it premiered.
" I am the old lady that has lived in the apartment forever " no truer words have been spoken ! At work I started talking about working on my house, painting, renovations, running electrical wire etc. that is what I talked about at work later in my working career. Gone were the days about talking about going to clubs, partying etc. We all got older and slower, but Ellen I say this to you, are still with us. A few of my friends and family have moved on . We are all just travelers here on Earth. Love your music and thank you for this insightful interview !
I wore out that Meatloaf album on both vinyl and 8-track, still love Paradise.....
Best album ever
I love her voice. It's nice to see her. I hope she is okay
Genuinely a great talent, should be a household name!!!! Person who grabbed life and wouldn't let go!!!!
Also starred in Night Cout
I love her so much! She and Linda Ronstadt were my favourites and I have her album still. I could listen to her all day long, and I have many times.
Incredible voice, I love "What's a matter baby" as well.
Love you Ellen. I did in 1978 and still listen to you in 2021.💜
She is such a goddess!!
Ellen, I appreciate you! You're talented and beautiful!
One of my favourite 70's songs great vocals
Loved her on "Night Court"! 😊
1st year only... most have forgotten her there.
@@googoo-gjoob she was good in the show but they did upgrade with Markie Post with no disrespect to Ellen.
Came into the comments to see if anyone remembered Billie.
Really?
She was in night court?
@@toomanyjstoomanyrs1705 only season 2.
I thank you for your talent and musicical input to paradise. Loved that song. You made history and making history is not glamorous. THANK YOU FOR THE HARD AND UNPLEASANT WORK YOU DONE. IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOU.
Ellen has a brilliant rock voice and Karla Devito also is a great singer too. Meatloaf worked with two talented women on that brilliant "Paradise" record.
Karlas my neighbor, kinda. Shes married to Robby Benson, the actor. I love her voice too, and Ellens.
We lived at 255 W 88th in the early 80's. I bet we ran into Benny and Ellen all the time and never knew it. (Sorry for your loss.)
Should ve had more bangers, because YES, great voice
I knew her and loved her from Night Court. I didn't find out until last year it was she who sang on Paradise and not Karla DeVito. I was like WOW.
It depends on what version you listening to. The Ellen sang on the studio album version. Karla sang live on stage with Meatloaf.
@@jamofsocal Yes, but the music video is synced to footage of the stage show. So we're SEEING Karla DeVito but we're HEARING Ellen Foley.
Depends on the version. I like both Ellen and Karla. This is a version where I really enjoyed with Karla singing.

What a powerful and moving voice.
What a talent!! 💜🎶
We belong to the night...What a great song...What a great and underrated singer......Ellen you were and are Amazing....and you still look great...
Wij wilde liever ‘Fight for your right to party’ horen. Meat loaf was duidelijk voor een andere generatie…
Good interview! Ellen seems to a pretty cool lady! Thanks for this.
Incredible talent!
Great interview!
BTW Candle Cafe is a great place! Ellen is a show stopper!
Fantastic singer. Wish we saw more of you.
Great interview..she's so cool.
Amazing voice.
An amazing voice
God dam i loved this song all those years ago and still do Ellen Foley was an amazing singer in the seventies and eighties and still can sing not as strong these days but shes still great always a fan of hers great voice loved it 😃😃
What a sweetheart., and so adorable then..
A video claiming to discuss the song Paradise By The Dashboard Lights, where they discuss it for all of about 3 seconds. LOL
sounds like she didn't want to do the play acting to the song.
Never realised as I was enjoying the narrative 😂
Read the title. It's about that song and "We Belong To The Night".
The problem with this video is, it is not the whole video. The original video was a part of the serie "Top 2000 a gogo", which is broadcasted every year between Christmas and New Years Eve. In those days the Top 2000 is at a Dutch radiostation and at Dutch tv daily the Top 2000 a gogo - serie. The Top 2000 is voted by Dutch people who can vote their favorite songs of all times; the list very miscellaneous. In the tv-serie they talk about the background of the hits that are at the radiostation that day (some of the remarkable songs). In every episode they have a few of these small items about a song or artist that's part of that episode.
In the serie at tv, the complete video was shown and was told about the Paradise by the dashboard light song. When I am remembering it correctly, Ellen didn't want to talk about the Meatloaf-period. So that part was covered by the reporter and was Dutch spoken. Why they cut off that part of the video? I don't know. Probably to prevent any copyright claims? Or just because that part was Dutch spoken?
Hi Ellen, you have many fans in Europe also.(for many, many years..)..so long..nice and great lady..
I love the upper west side of the city. I first went there nearly 25 years ago (mid 90's). I understand her love of that part of the city.
This 1 real classic paradise by the dashboard light the very best and still is
She had the talent , looks, and drive to be a star. Never understood why it didn't happen for her.
Sometimes that's not enough. You need a little bit of luck to have a long career but she did accomplish a lot.
Unfortunately, there was only room for one between her, Pat Benatar and others like Rachel Sweet. I had the first albums of all 3 ladies. Loved them all.
@@mindeyemedialab6544 Those 3 albums are all absolute classics ! .. Like you, I just love all of them .. In fact I also really liked the 2nd albums by all these 3 wonderful singers, but they weren't quite as magnificent as the debut albums .. All 3 singers should have been huge !
A majestic voice and the looks
she is verry nice and normal can understand that she didnt wanted to play live on stage with Meat Loaf that extreme long kiss. for the rest who cares. good singer. not a glamour person at all. i remember her in hair. nice.
Great songs both, as is Ellen's first album. "Stupid Girl" is a pretty good rocker.
wonderful under rated song
It's been rated highly
She is such a stunning woman
WOW,...what a voice!.....I wonder if I saw her hanging out at Hurrah's since she lived on the upper west side....I was also a night animal there,...back then.....when I listened to 'Paradise..." over and over again...it was to hear her singing.....
Hitsville UK!
She has a form of immortality. A superb contribution to an immense album
What a voice...
You can hear Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson all over this.
That was good insight into why she would leave what seems like a great gig with Meatloaf!!
She always struck me as a cleaned up Broadway version of Patty Smith
good call! she has that underlying meth skinny hard edge look, not like she's on meth, just the sharpness of the features
Except Ellen Foley can REALLY sing. No dance moves and auto-tune there.
Ellen is so good, her voice is so beautiful
Such a nice lady,she is a real star and i am a fan..Go girl..
super star
Mijn neef en ik op de dansvloer in disco Thijs in Lattrop. Onvergetelijke familiereünie.
Lovely...
I remember her from one season of the TV comedy 'Night Court' & them a movie of two.
She is as lovely now as she was when she did dash board. I LOVE HER X
Lol. Whatevs
Waanzinnig te gek.
Very under appreciated artist, new wave killed many artists careers
You mean something better killed many artists careers
Yes,
@@TheNinjaPicker no they had it right.your wrong!!
I somehow always knew having to kiss Meat Loaf was the reason she didn't tour. Now it's confirmed.
best female rock vocalist ever!!!
It is only now that I realise she was basically doing a girly version of Bruce Springsteen's big city romanticism.
she rocks!
Little lady big voice....Lotta history.....love ya .....
Never heard of her, but wow, great singer.
Watch Meatloaf... Paradise by the Dashboard lights. Then you will see her.
@@alwyn626 no you won't
@@alwyn626 you will hear her , but see Karla Devito !
What a lady!
She is SO New York!
If there was a genuine, bona fide vampire/horror anthem - then this was it. In fact, the tense can rightly be changed by having some film mogul latch onto its untapped potential and really running with it.
One hell of a voice too. Better situation again by me half-expecting the Pat Benatar tune to be the latter quoted example. Given it's a whole new track entirely, it's a shoe in for BBC Radio 2's PopMaster segment of same name...different song. Well, almost.
Best🎸🎸🎸🎸
The first ten seconds are footage from Karla de Vito, though. She did tours with Meat Loaf.
Ellen Foley your most memorable line is song for me is from 9-5 we’re lock something… of course indestructible gave immeasurable strength to exist in one of New York’s boroughs I ask my doctors not to make me feel so indestructible today I’m fine with feeling superb … Max’s Kansas City we survive electric circus Cgbg pallantin beacon theater Madison square and every stage in between you rocked it with great producers who know how to pick a song … fantastic you filled Janis Joplins shoes for me thanks happy sailing
Ellen u where great on the bat Album
And that kids is before auto-tune.
Its so sad that he died
Not to be disrespectful in anyway, but watching her sing that song she often reminded me of Iggy Pop the way she moved and the power in her voice.
Well done Ellen.
With a bit of Joe Cocker thrown in.
Still looking pretty fit.
Why are there no videos of her singing with Meatloaf? I can't find them. Love her voice & loved her on Night Court
One of the greatest albums amazing voice sadly follow up albums were mediocre.
had her Night owl album watched her on Night Court and starring on Broadway in My One and Only
check that= years have gone by make that night Out and Me and My Girl perhaps
Recognized her from the clip. Never knew the MEATLOAF or music connection. She is so ordinary lookng and speaking. Very nice to look at but so humble and interesting. It feels so strange finding out about this lady. So great to see her . She was so charming and funny on NC.
Other people have talked about how terrible it was to be in New York during the 70s I only got a small sense of that, since I was born in 1980, raised in the Hudson Valley and only in New York on occasion as a child. It’s interesting to hear Ellen Foley give her take on it.
I was not aware of this song until the moment I write this comment. It sounds like she was trying to put everything she was at that time into it.
She was dating Meatloaf when this song was made and due to this one song, Paradise on the Dashboard, she got an amazing record deal. Rumor has it that Karla lip synced Ellen's part in Dashboard many times.
That's what I understand also.
Rocking a sweet little chassis, Ellen.
The young lady singing w/ Meat in the beginning is not Ellen Foley.
It's Karla de Vito
June 5-Ellen was born
Had no idea she was on the meatloaf record. I know her from the Utopia, " cry baby" video.
From appearance I'd say she could be Ellen Degeneres' older sister ;-)
Great singer. Lovely lady
