First time I heard this song I was surprised by its melancholy and synth pop sound...I liked it immediately. Definitely one of ABBA's best songs.
ABBA went out being not that popular anymore at the time.
With this masterpiece they showed the world what is was going to miss for 40 years: music which will last forever.
This is by far, the BEST ABBA song ever.

Your comment makes no sense, for example it hit No 3 in their native Sweden, also No 3 in the Netherlands...etc
So wasn't a mile off no1 + also doesn't matter if it got to number one or not at least it was a hit single in many countries!
The only other that could have been (but wasn't even released as a single) was If It Wasn't For The Nights from the Voulez-Vous album

The point is, nobody looks at what position a song makes in any of the European country but what it did in UK as UK has always been considered the mainstream of charts. Yes, I know TDBYC was a great success in many European countries, but if you've listened to Bjorn's interview on the song, he said that had this song been No1 in UK, we might have carried on a lit more longer and hence .....

I have to admit, I am not the biggest ABBA fan out there but this is truly one of all time my favorite songs ever. The composition is so perfectly fitting the lyrics and the simple production with Agnetha's clear vocals and expression... This is perfection. Love this.
Fitting this was their swansong. All of us could now ponder what life was like before Abba came.
Too good for the pop charts at the time, this song took years to be appreciated.
I don't even remember when it was released, it must not have made much of a splash on the charts or radio. Heard it years later and was blown away.

Imagine having such a great singer in your band that you instruct her to "not sing it as good as she can". She complies, and still performs this vocal masterpiece...

The day before you came. Could have meant anything really. Person, religious experience, cancer.... My favourite ABBA song, lies in its ambiguous nature, great melody, arrangement and performance.
Bjorn and Benny are excellent song writers, and very nice, intelligent humble people.

I only heard this ABBA song for the first time in my headphones at work this week and I had to find it. Couldn't stop thinking about how great the lyrics and music were.
Once Chuck Berry said: “A good song always tells a story”. This is a genius example of that. Upper higher level of songwriting this is. Amazing.

My favourite ABBA song by a country mile.
Just like with "The winner takes it all", there is a kind of hypnotizing repetitive background which never starts to bore. This has almost double the length of other pop songs and it still feels too short.
This song is a masterpiece. You listen to it once, and it stays with you forever. This is the fastest song that I memorized.
Perfect description of the track... Haunting. It has that effect everytime I listen to it. Pure magic.....

My favourites were always the darker minor-chord tracks: SOS, Eagle, One Man, One Woman, etc. There was also something dark in Summer Night's City and The Piper as well, musically.

I discovered ABBA while watching "Muriel's Wedding'. I loved the music, so my friend loaned me "ABBA Gold". I played it so much that I had to buy my own copy to give my friend his CD back. I also bought "More ABBA Gold" at the same time. As a result, I wasn't aware of the history or order of the songs. This song was on "More ABBA Gold" and could have just as easily been from 1972 as from 1982 as far as I was concerned in 1995.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs in Pop history. Don't we all remember how dull life was the day (or days) before new love came? The only downside is the video - it shows what COULD be happening; better left unsaid cos the song says it all.

I'm an Iranian and I'm not happy. I think many Iranians share this sentiment. You see, on the surface, this country may look relatively normal and advanced, but deep beneath, it's an Orwellian nightmare. (read what happened during the November of 2019 protests)

Ambiguous, mysterious, with immense room for personal interpretation. Such a wonderful track. A love lost, the arrival of illness, death even.
Agree. When discussng the meaning ("what is this about", who came the day after...) I see a variety of interpretations. My personal idea is that every day is the day before "you came", we keep on fantisizing about our dreams comming true, but they won't. In the video you can recognise this, as her dream-man evaporates when she looks again. He is jsut a dream. Next day will be like today

I've always seen it as more of a "Flowers for Algernon" kinda thing. She was quite content with her life before she met "The One" and now that he is out of her life, what once seemed like a normal life now seems mundane and dull.

@@Tieper My take is pretty close to yours: The ’you’ in this beautiful melancholic song and video represents the illusion of The Big Love which is beyond one’s reach in this life, as illustrated by the ‘untouching’ of the hands of the woman and her imagined lover, separated by an invisible and impenetrable sheet of glass; the membrane between dream and reality.
I have always thought that this song was so underrated. With Agnetha's and Frida's vocals, it just soars. And the video is hands down the best video ever produced by ABBA. It evoked everything you wanted to feel and was elevated way past anything that had been done for them. All around a fantastic work!
Something very simple becomes immortal somehow. Just two of them had gathered in the studio one day and created a pure miracle.

The best ABBA song.
I understood this song to mean this: I didn't realize how boring my life was until you came along. And now you're gone, and I'm stuck in my dull boring life again, _knowing_ it's a boring life. Benny may say it's not a reflection of their overall mood at the end of ABBA, but it fits perfectly: they lead a perfectly normal life before ABBA, they had a spectacularly unique life during ABBA and now they are living the normal life again (if that can really happen post something as big as ABBA).
Didn't you see the video? ABBA didn't decide at the time that this album was gonna be their last. They took a break. It was 4-5 years later they realized that ABBA was over.

As said by others, this song is a pop masterpiece. One of four singles at the end of their last time around that should have been huge in the charts, and each recognised as pop masterpieces - " The Day Before You Came", " The Visitors", "When All Is Said and Done", "One of Us". These had some success in diverse countries and genres but nothing like each deserved. The sour critics had had their way, and audiences had tuned to the latest fads at the time.
It's fitting that they should be having so much enormous success again now.

I like some ABBA's songs, but heard this one for the first time in my life on the radio a year ago, and loved it straight away (and that happens really rarely to me). No doubt masterpiece: lyrics - simple but complicated, music - so melancholic...

Benny saying to Agnetha don't sing as good as you can, and she nails it, is genius.
Even though the person's life in the song seems sad, it's as if THAT life changing relationship turned everything upside down. She's singing from a point of view that this wonderful man came into her life, but now he's long gone. Left in that position, she can no longer go back to what she once knew. A BIG wakeup call, and a new start 💗

Well listened! Yes Frida's voice is in the background combined with some synths and fine tuning. Benny did all parts and layers by himself.
For sure. For decades I thought Frida’s solo was a synthesizer.
I played this song to my therapist when I tried to explain how I felt before transition (male to female transsexual), to explain triviality and mundanity of my life going through the motions of the day without any aim... My therapist fully understood what this song described for me and by the time Chinese food and Dallas were being mentioned, she was in tears for me. This song means lots of things to lots of people and anyone who had ever felt empty or lonely resonates with it.
Just about the most masterful number that Benny has written. I always find this song in my head and whistling it or seeing the images in my mind such a powerful hook incredibly memorable and an ABBA classic. I just wish I had been the guy Agetha smiles at in the video!! Truly a haunting song.

I remember vividly when this came out. My dear neighbour Irene had returned from her Christmas holiday in Germany and, as usual she brought the latest from ABBA for me. THE SINGLES- The First Ten Years. I wasn't too impressed about TDBYC and a little bit more excited about Under Attack, I was a teen, I was a fool, I was 16.
The single was never released here in Peru, it was too long, too languid, too dull, people from RCA said. We, as members of the Peruvian ABBA fan club were very disappointed about it. Then later in 1983, Under Attack was released, but by that time ABBA was uncool, dated, demodé.
I got "ABBA A Lyrical collection" book (from Pop import) and from the very first moment I could read the lyrics of TDBYC, I fell in love with it.
It remains in my Top 5 ABBA favourite, and I am overjoyed to learn that NME has chosen TDBYC as one of the 10 best pop songs of all times (N°4 actually).
