Time of Eve is one my favorite anime that left me wanting more. The dance between the humans and robots was wonderful as they explored the boundaries between human and machine experience.

You know that when you see a movie directed by Yasuhiro Yoshiura you need to prepare your brain to be blown. Because his work is incredible nostalgic and you will be always remember some of the line from his work. My favorite is Harmonie, because the song always in my head every night.
Sing a Bit of Harmony was one of the best surprises I've had in years. I went to see it in the cinema in the UK about a week or so before Belle was showing. I'd never heard of the director beforehand, and assumed it was just trying to ride the anime movie wave of Belle's release. Not expecting anything special, I sat and watched, and with every minute, was captivated more and more. I walked out the cinema with the biggest smile I've had in a long time, and immediately put the OST on in the car drive home. Not only is the film wonderfully charming, it managed to give me a sense of wonder and discovery, which is so rare in recent times. Thank you for helping bring more people to it!
Whoever did the subtitles (Fevol according to the description) did not need to put that much effort into them but they did and I'm enjoying them very much.

I realliy appreciate how you accentuated the best parts that Harmony derives from its narrative simplicity rather than just criticizing it! There's been so many gritty, hardcore, dystopic stories about AI and technology that such a joyful and idealistic movie reconstructs hope for the future. It tells us that technology can complement our life without replacing us -- that we shouldn't give up in the face of singularity, but should work on bringing into reality technology that actually will better our lives. With all credits due to Time of Eve and many other tales ruminating on consequences of tech advancement, we also need stories that can excite us with what the future can offer.
And I too haven't had such a long smile while watching a movie for a long while! :)

I watched Time of Eve today, and it was... intriguing. The idea is interesting and the exploration of what independence the androids can gain from the 3 laws of robotic, what they can do with it, the relationship they can create, how they feel about it... it's so interesting, i'm surprised there isn't much more content in this franchise. The style, the feel of the movie, while confusing at moment, brings atmosphere to a level i rarely see.
It's a flawed and weird movie, but it sticks in my memory, i was captivated.
I've been a big fan of Yasuhiro Yoshiura's works for a long time ever since I found the short aquatic language. One of my favorite directors and I wish his works were more known.

So weird because I randomly chose to watch Time of Eve last weekend out of nowhere while seeing it on Crunchyroll when trying to find something else. Much better than I expected it to ever be. Top 20 material, especially if it was longer.
Awhile back I tried passing along a comment to be re commented. If this video does not specify the show its talking about in the description then give it a thumbs down. Beyond Ghibli, does not do that and I never felt he did. I'm just saying thank you. What I'm also saying is those who do not share what they are talking about in the description and or a letter box is, shame on you. Why, because you know of something that is great, and how rude of you, to not help share, that what is so damn great.
Oh, PS: This video made my eyes water a little bit, thank you Beyond Ghibli and thank you to who ever made the over optimistic robot in this video.

That was a great cut of great sci-fi movies! Having seen Time of Eve years ago I'm very happy you brought its director to my attention again. I will definitely be looking his later works up.
I am stunned by the quality of your narration. Your choice of words is so clever and seems unachievable to me. What helped you the most to become such a great narrator?
I'm not the author of this video and I may be reaching gym bro levels of advice, but here's a few things I have up my sleeve:
1) Observe more and try to be more aware. A writer is a weaver of words, but words form from you interacting with the world. Be curious and inquisitive even about the little things in life and people: the weather, how people express themselves verbally and non-verbally, why various things happen, what leads to them happening and what are the consequences. Even mundane physical processes, like water boiling or sun setting.
2) Read more. Read more of writing that resonates with you. When you stumble on a choice of words that captivates you, make a note about it. What is it that delights you so much? Is it a specific literary trope/figure of speech that is used well, or composition of text itself? Dissect it, think about it, let the thoughts marinate and seep into your creative centers.
3) Write more. Think of it as practicing theory and observations that bubbled up in your mind. Even if you don't like your writing at first, keep going. 'The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.' If you don't like something, think of how it can be imrpvoved. Ask people whose writing you find good for advice.
My favorite exercise is writing haikus when I'm enjoying the moment. I used to write them in my phone, but recently I've started carrying a pocket notebook for such occasions. I hope I'll get my hands on bigger projects sooner!
Most importantly, just keep on going in your direction and take your time :)

What a wonderful reminder of Yoshiura's trail of work. Caught "Sing a Bit of Harmony" last summer and several aspects of it still echo in my memory.

I still remember this being one of the earliest "exclusives" of Crunchyroll and glad it was there before the flood of mainstream fare that now dominates the service. Indeed, i havent watched it in years but my impressions of it has stayed over the years. And indeed, in a future where androids are no longer just the name of a smartphone OS, this should be what we should ponder.

I totally loved Time Of Eve when I picked it up last year on Bluray. Now I am definently going to have to check out Sing A Bit Of Harmony as well since you gave it such a ringing endorsement. Thanks for the heads up on Harmony, as sometimes the real gems of anime fly well under the radar.

If you are in Ginza Tokyo, look for the Gucci building and along renga-dori there is a tiny side path across from Gucci. Walk down this tiny path which turns right. Here you will find the location of Time-0f-Eve cafe entrance. The location matches those recreated in the anime. The door is there but it is a back entrance that staff working in the building use. Visited and took photos back in 2017.

I really enjoyed this video. I have not seen Time of Eve yet, but I will definitely check it out soon (the premise is almost similar to Westworld).
I have seen Sing a Bit of Harmony and it is a good movie. Not the best pacing, though that's understandable considering it's focus on pure escapism (which I find refreshing from a film or show full of loaded and complicated plotlines).

Magnificent and profound review of two of my favorite robot movies, and its spot on accurate! Bravo! Mr. Yoshimura tells stories about human perceptions, if you and your girlfriend responded to gravity in opposite directions (Patema Inverted), which perception is the right one? If robots existed and could pass the Turing test, (Time of Eve & Sing a Bit of Harmony), who or what is the Human? Mr. Yoshimura is drawing a map of the contours and continents of humanity and he invites his audience to visit.

I like to think that Yasuhiro Yoshiura had a strong influence on the writers of Bicentennial Man.
Oh man Time of Eve.... i haven't thought about that OVA series in a while, was a interesting take on what is human? Reminds me how a few years later I watched "Plastic Memories" which went over the emotional attachment aspect of having a "android" live/nurture you but have to be "recycled" after their time is up. As for a singing android TiL vs this the musical. When I think of one.... it has to be the "Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song" the starling of pandemic originals. Because on top of the singing aspect, there was the aspect of how "human" do you have to be make good music. (we'll ignore the other main plotline of the anime). We also had "Beatless" that blurred the line between the two recurrently.
Anyways can't wait for the Chobits video, a Clamp masterpiece I also haven't thought nor re-watched of in ages. Asking the question is it wrong to fall in love with a android? What are the social stigmas? How do you deal with said stigma? And when you are lonely is a android enough companionship? (going off memory here).
I have seen the latter film on the German TV channel ProSieben MAXX not too long ago this year.

The science fiction vision of Android/AI serving us or being subservience to us is ridiculous in light of recent LLM advances made by Open AI, Meta, Google, Stanford etc. Had you made this video a year or two ago, I would entertain your premise but today the idea of android aligning its ability to meet the needs of a petty, conniving and selfish species is simply ridiculous. I’ve followed this channel through the years and love your story telling of heroic and genius animators, however, I can’t help but imagine a scenario a year or two from now where LLMs write/animate better stories than the best of us. I increasing believe that we are a mere stepping stone in sentient evolution. Be that as it may, if you ever wanting to visit California and in particular Silicon Valley and wanting to see the future of Android/AI I’ll be delighted to be your tour guide to Open AI (Mission neighborhood) or RUclips (San Bruno).

Time of Eve is not really appealing visualy, but I might give it a try anyway after your praise
If you liked "A Bit of Harmony" then don't make the mistake to try "Time of Eve". It's similar to a western movie or show, in terms of handling the topic and having tensions in there. It's awful.
A better choice would be: Vivy (Fluorite Eye's Song), Prima Doll (subs only, maybe even unreleased in the West), and Planetarian (Movie). The first two are basically also musicals with robot girls. Also, don't look up Planetarian on RUclips, since there's a video with a heavy spoiler in the title.
Unfortunately AI will never have a soul and sentience. That a quality of living things and chemical reaction not code.
How long til the simulation of those becomes indistinguishable
I have to say modern anime does not look near as good as the older stuff does.
So time of eve is just a better film adaption of Isaac Asimov's irobot them Hollywood could produce because its not trying to make it an action movie / comedy.
