- The Summit of the Gods is many things - a treatise on the tenacity of the human spirit, a deep-dive into the most unfathomable parts of our psyche, and a stunning entry point into the library of legendary mangaka Jirō Taniguchi. But most of all, it is a simple question: why do we climb?
This video is, more than anything, an homage to the climbing community, and that was only made possible by cribbing copiously from the various documentaries and movies that community has produced over the year. Sections of this video are a montage of those works of art - all sources are listed in the credits, as always, and I encourage you to go check out each and every one of them for truly stomach-turning, soul-affirming cinema.

This felt like a fully fledged documentary condensed into under 20 minutes. great editing, immaculate storytelling, and hypnotically fascinating. I'd like to check out Taniguchi's work now
His work definitely gives me a lot of Naoki Urasawa vibes (especially with stuff like Monster and Master Keaton)
I recommend reading the manga Kokou no Hito( The Climber) by Shin'ichi Sakamoto. It's incredibly realistic when in comes to the art. The manga starts with a teenager discovering climbing and then through the years we follow him solo climbing mountains and the dangers of it. He gets so much character development during the years he climbs mountains alone. It's really good in my opinion. The art is GOD TIER!

My first thought when i saw the thumbnail before reading the title was it was about that manga, nice to see someone else recommend/speak of it. Funny enough i have never read it... its in my backlogg, maybe i'll relook for it after watching this film. They both seem like a great look at man vs nature i feel.

This might be your best video yet, which I begrudgingly say considering you have some masterpieces in your library (I’m especially fond of your Legends of Earthsea and Akira videos). Mountain climbing is something I have the utmost respect for, and Summit of the Gods gave me a taste of what it’s like. This video reminded me of and cemented said feeling as something I will cherish for a long time. I love how you’re not mindlessly talking big words about the movie for 20 minutes, but weaving between the movie, the manga, the artist, the sport. There’s so much to this work than what’s on screen or on the pages, and you really showed why.

Summit of the Gods is one of my favourite manga, it is an utterly stunning work and I am so glad I was actually able to get a proper print copy for it.
The summit of the gods is an absolute masterpiece. It's not just a story about climbing mountains, it's about passion in it's ethymological sense. The root of passion is "pati", which literally means suffering. Some people in order to live need to overcome pain. In Abu's case it's mountains, but it can be anything. It's not about being fearless because EVERYONE fears death, but for some exeptional individuals there are thing scarier than that.
You should check out The Climber. It’s a fantastic manga about mountain climbing and why a climber does what they do. It has absolutely jaw dropping art style to complement it's narration with may symbolisms and the mindset of its protagonist Bintarou Mori
Oh, this movie... I found it mostly by chance on Netflix and, since my mother was very much into climbing, was curious to watch it. It left me crying and grasping for humanity. You are right, it was hard to swallow that unspoken, indescribable truth portrayed in this movie, and to then be confronted by those truths being framed in such a grounded, human way just made me ache more, and really feel that connection to life and nature that I value so much. That pull, everlasting, it called again even if I'm not a climber. It's wanderlust, it's wonder, and god dammit it's also danger. and realizing that those things are inescapable once they caught wind of you, that hurts... beautifully. Thanks so much for covering summit of the gods!

Watched the movie right after seeing this. It was incredible.
Emptiness, plain and simple.. these creatures that "conquer themselves" will NEED to do this again, because they accomplished nothing, but a party tale.
They seek attention and validation, and some don't stop to think about the value of their life.. or they only see value in doing something as pointless as that. But we humans have to do something.. anything at all, so might as well pursue that high, like drugs.
Why do people drink? Smoke? Or even get tattoos?

After hearing your video, I can so clearly see how Akihito Tsukushi, creator of Made in Abyss, was inspired by Jiro Taniguchi's Summit of the Gods. The call of the challenge, and the numerous lives that pursue it to death. I watched Summit earlier this year, and finished Made in Abyss only recently. But it was only by revisiting the inspiration did that connection clicked for me :p

Jiro Taniguchi, for some reason, reminds me of Hayao Miyazaki's sense of taking a reflective look at human nature and I'm filled with joy for this realization of beautiful connections: Taniguchi drew a manga (Icaro) with words from French comic art legend Mœbius who was also a friend with Hayao Miyazaki! Going further down the line, reflecting on what you've mentioned about the Franco-Belgian comic tradition drawn to Taniguchi's works, I can imagine he's probably inspired a mangaka who draws from a similar blend of different art traditions, both Japanese and western, Shirahama Kamome who is working on Witch Hat Atelier and like Taniguchi, is also beloved among French comic/ manga enthusiasts and art lovers alike! I love this bridge between different people around the world universally drawn to such resonant works of storytelling art!

Lovely video about my favourite animated experience of the last year. I saw some process videos on Instagram prior to the film's release but nothing prepared me for how much I would love the final product. I have no interest in climbing and am intensely scared of heights but I couldn't look away from the screen for a second. Thanks for making such a considered analysis.

Once I saw the title I knew I needed to watch this and sure enough, I was absolutely blown away. It took me 3 weeks tho :3
I was intrigued by the story of Hillary & Norgay and later Mallory & Irvine ever since I was a child. So The Summit of the Gods was a real surprise to me when I read the announcement and it's one of the few Netflix titles where I was constantly checking the calender looking forward to the day it got released. I guess I was one of the few who went into The Summit of the Gods for the story of Mallorys and Irvines camera. But the real reason the film stuck with me afterwards was that unreal experience that is so difficult to describe but was still conveyed to us by Taniguchi and Imbert.
I did not expect an explosion on social media about The Summit of the Gods but was still somehow disappointed seeing how few people were talking about it. So yeah, your video was a real surprise to me when I realised just how comprehensive and in-depth you went in this video essay. It made me appreciate the spirit of romanticism in The Summit of the Gods so much more. I would say you encaptured that call of the mountain so well I heard the Summit of the Gods calling me for my third rewatch again. This is the kind of video essay I seek. My utmost respect for your work.

I really need to get into European animation more, I've only seen the René Laloux films and a few from Michel Ocelot. Never heard of this mangaka or the filmmakers, and they do seem interesting now that I have, so thanks! A well made video too!

Underated masterpiece of a movie
My impressions on the video were:
1- Wow, that's such a good picture on climbing, I really want to discover more about its world...
2- Oh hey, here I have an anime to get into, with amazing artwork and a tense but beautiful storyline!
3- Wow, have I just discovered a new favourite artist, whose works are exactly what I look for in the japanese culture????

The limits of humanity's potential are unknown. We need to find out, not just for ourselves but the human race.
Tomorrow we colonize Mars, people will research, adventure and climb new mountains. We are not a hivemind, but as a collective human consciousness we have a desire to rise above.
Im scared of heights but I acknowledge the courageous climbers.
I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when it first started and then when I found it was a style of animation I wasn't fond of, I considered clicking off the video. I suppose this was my own mountain, as I often set a very narrow view of what I choose to watch and opening myself up to something new or something I normally wouldn't like is rather hard for me. Really though, I don't know why I would question it, your videos are always amazing and I should try and trust in the process a bit more. Overall, unsurprisingly, it was a beautiful video and was well worth watching. It makes me wonder if I should watch some of your other videos that I may have skipped over due to the subject. I was wrong about thinking I'd dislike a mountain climbing video, so who knows what else I might be wrong about. I look forward to the next video, whatever it may be, so please keep up the good work!

I plan to watch the movie so I'll skip this video for now and get back to it. I'm sure it's just as superb as the rest of Joe's Beyond Ghibli content.
BTW Joe, I'm sure you're inundated with suggestions on anime shows and movies to cover, but one that I'd strongly suggest is the anime movie series 'The Garden of Sinners' (Kara no Kyoukai). It's really something special and is a complex mix of psychological, horror, supernatural, philosophy, mystery and thriller. It's very well written and highly unpredictable. When watched in the original release order you'll find that the story is not told chronologically - this is deliberate. However, after the first watch I would suggest viewing it in chronological order.
This would be a great tie in with "Made in Abyss" as the philosophy is the same. Why risk your life in the abyss where a swift death would be mercy?why? Because it's there
Amazing movie! But the final message is dangerous to me. Early in the movie, a group that was climbing a mountain and decided to go back are portrayed as lazy, while our "hero" decides to go all the way even when death was certain. It was a beautiful ending, but I hope people don't try to apply this "lesson" on real life.
Thanks for introducing this gem to us. I can't help but think if only Makoto Shinkai was given this project instead. What beautiful nature animation could we have gotten.
Some people hate having a desk job. Those people learn things hands on, or learn best with Kinesthetic learning.
Those kinds of people want to experience a climb, rather than read or watch a movie about it.
This movie was great. Not enough people gave it a chance.
Regarding the clip of Reinhold Messner saying that half of the top climbers have died in the mountains: that's probably from "The Alpinist," in which he says that mountaineering would be a bit boring without the risk of death.
It is indeed from The Alpinist, and the entire documentary embodies that mentality you speak of, wherein 'the closer we are to death the more we feel alive'. Its a terrifying truth (and a phenomenal movie)

I read, I think it was “ Summits and Secrets” but it could have been “Throne room of the Mountain Gods” and upon finding the dried corpse and bones of a climber it was remarked that all mountain climbers know their passion is a suicide cult, and to leave them on the mountain.
People who don’t get that willing participation, and the net is loaded with them, should just leave it alone. It’s beyond them.

I have weird moments in life where I can predict what will be said next. At the part when they talk about Mallory and everest and why he must climb it. The words "because it's there" popped into my head before they were revealed on screen. That happens pretty often and sometimes I'll hear a song In my head or be humming along to it then I'll turn on the radio and the same song is playing at the exact same time it's playing in my head. Not much as far as super powers to but I'll take anything I can get
