"Because it is There:" President Kennedy on the Exploration of Space

  • Most people know only one line from President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Rice University speech: “We choose to go to the Moon…not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” This is deeply unfortunate, as the entire, 18-minute speech is a rousing and thrilling piece of prose about our obligations for celestial exploration. In this video, I hope to capture some of that tone. This too is just a snippet-the full speech can be viewed here ( • President Kennedy's Sp... ) or read here (er.jsc.nasa.gov... much of Kennedy’s Cold War allusions and Soviet xenophobia. Enjoy…and be inspired by what humans have done and can still do when they put their collective minds and hearts to it.

    Could anyone imagine a president talking this way today. We seem to missing politicians who can look beyond the short term and see a long term vision of the future. We need politicians who understand that when we as a country make real and concrete long term goals, we have something to aim for and in doing so humans will create all types of new technologies and ideas on how to achieve that goal. This is how we went to the moon. We had a long term goal and we as a nation took it upon ourselves to push our science and technology to that goal. So many things that we have today are based on the technologies that were developed during our pursuit of this goal. If we had not gone to the moon, I would say half the technological breakthroughs of the last 50 decades would not have taken place as they did. Its not the goal that is the most important thing, but the industries, technologies and knowledge that we acquire in our pursuit of that goal. That knowledge and technology will provide a bedrock for our kids and their grand kids on which to stand upon. If we don't continue to build that bed rock, then we as a nation have failed our children and all proceeding generations that will come after us.

      Couldn’t have said it better myself. Other than the 50 decades part, although I assume that was a typo. I don’t care if we have a Democratic or Republican president, but we need one that is responsible, respectful, and a long term thinker like you said. That is the only way our country is going to move forward. It’s crazy how much this speech from 60 years ago is still so relevant today.

      Kennedy offered a vision. A vision both within our grasp and yet, outside of our instincts. JFK proposed ideas - ideas - which resonate more than sixty years later. Kennedy believed in the triumph that is America. America the exceptional. His powerful rhetoric embodied and embraced insights for a newer Frontier. Leadership is all about vision. I can see the light. JFK held a visionary candle opening our minds to greater ideas and innovations.

      On the other hand, was it the meme of space exploration -- previously found only in fiction -- that caused two world powers to use it for political jockeying? One could say, perhaps, that the meme found prime hosts that could finally propagate it widely. Perhaps USA and CCCP were simply convenient carriers of a compelling meme. But don't get me wrong -- we haven't had such an intelligent and visionary president since Kennedy.

    In the minute 0.49-0.5 a piece of track is missing, you can not modify the speech is not faire

    • @PlumblinePictures1701
      @PlumblinePictures1701  6 лет назад

      Not exactly sure how to read your timecode comment, but yeah, it's called editing. A whole lot of it was necessary to fit the pertinent parts of the speech into so concise a video. Fairness has nothing to do with it unless I was editing the soundbites to make it sound as if Kennedy said something he did not, which I have not.

      Minute 0:49 - 0:50, when he talks about the apparition of Christianity.

    • @PlumblinePictures1701
      @PlumblinePictures1701  5 лет назад

      Since the invention of Christianity has been a force for ill rather than good, I think that was a valid edit in depicting those things for which humanity should be proud.

    • @pasblo39
      @pasblo39 5 лет назад

      I could not agree more with you, but since that is in the original speech, the least you can do, if you say that video is Kennedy's speech, is to leave it as it was originally. I did not come here to criticize anyone's work, the only thing that I would like is that if you decide to remove a part of something HISTORICAL, however much you agree, you should indicate that it is not complete. Be rigorous when dealing with sensitive issues such as religion. Since I am not English speaking, I ask for forgiveness in advance if I have made a serious error.

    • @PlumblinePictures1701
      @PlumblinePictures1701  5 лет назад

      Kennedy's entire speech is 18 minutes long. This video is only four. Clearly I edited a ton. Had to. Why aren't you angry I cut out the bits about Plymouth Bay Colony, the University of Texas, or Congressman Miller? You don't mind that I cut them. So stop being selective and just understand that if you want to make something 18 minutes into something four minutes, you're gonna have to cut out a lot of stuff, some of which may disappoint those watching later, but you trust they are intelligent enough to understand that there is no way around such issues.

    Unfortunately this is the same Man that, according to his biographer, thought that it wasn’t worth spending millions on space exploration. It was an unprecedented result reaching the moon, but it was a political issue. A political will. Not a scientific curiosity purpose. And I claim this is a pity
