So how did Scotland conquer Paris? | Six Nations 2021 | The Squidge Report

- Twenty-two years. A last-moment score saw Scotland claim their first win in Paris since their coach was at 10, and two of the opposition's dads were playing professionally. So how did Stuart Hogg's side steal the scalp, and how should the two teams assess this Championship?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can buy a tank and try to conquer Paris myself, like Mike from Spaced.
One of your best videos. The Six Nations is so much more enjoyable with this Scottish team. Like watching France but I actually want them to win.
Rugby is always better with a Scotland team not masterminded by Dan "multiple of three" Parks dragging us to torrid 9-7 wins and 53-15 losses.
@@magnuspeacock5857 God, don't. I am still traumatised by the Parks era (play with a rictus of terror on your face) and I know, I know we can't blame him personally. But wow how much fun it is to watch Finn et al play with speed and adventure.
Exactly what I was going to say
Haha us Scots will take that as a compliment
Never knew you were a rugby fan
The 10 metre pass to Hogg by Russell out the back of his hand while being tackled is absolute filth
"Finn Rusell finn rusells the ball" 😂😂😂
France: We're going to win by 21 points
Hogg: And I took that personally
France never said they were going to win by 21, on the opposite situation Scotland would have thought and talked about it the same way. Hogg is a great player, but he s stupid and definitely not the best person to talk about respect.
@@nicotandem7058 No I don't think Scotland would. What your saying is called projection.
@@nicotandem7058 lol so salty hahaha
@@galinor7 Of course 😂
I remember in 1998 when we, Ireland, were going to play France in Paris, the build up to the game was similar. The French were taking bets as to who would score the first try, talk of hitting 50+ and a soccer match in training, fired Ireland up and they tore into France and nearly won the match,. Lesson don’t disrespect your opposition, no matter who it is.
At first i couldnt understand why Harris is often picked over Huw Jones but my god can he defend.
And now he's been picked for the lions, Squidge knows his stuff aha

Highlight of my day.
The tragedy of the 1926 Scotland team is that it was too early for Squidge to make puns about the great positioning of captain GPS McPherson
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The Chris Harris segment is what made me fall in love with rugby. As a centre myself it was exactly those instances which kept my playing. I was never any good with the ball, just crashed it pretty much every time, but defence was what I loved and what Chris Harris did in those minutes is what I dreamt of doing every time I got on the pitch.
I'm not a centre but I used to do a sort of faint tackle in a 2 on 1 when defending on the wing and they almost always bit and passed it making it easy to put the guy into touch. Did you do anything like this?
I switch between centre and flanker, and occasionally some other positions too. I find centre, particularly outside centre, the hardest position to defend. Aside from the technical side of covering a lot of space and attackers running at pace (in the back row you get through a lot of work but the tackles are more predictable), it’s so easy to over-commit and leave a massive hole. Harris’s positioning in these clips is exemplary - makes it easier for himself and his teammates to defend. As for the amount of ground he covered, at pace, to execute that positioning brilliance, well I wouldn’t last two minutes.
Been anticipating this so long that I forgot about the Lions tour
Also nobody is more obsessed with that defence from Chris Harris than me. I just love love how he keeps ahead of the french attackers, never drawing himself in and just waiting for the right moment. Such a great blend of intelligence and work rate. The amount of Scotland fans that still don’t see how valuable Harris is, and keep bleating about how ‘he must have dirt on Townsend for him to keep being picked’ just speaks volume over so many things
Yea I had way too many people complaining that Harris was getting picked over Huw Jones after how the latter played against Italy. Harris has been up there along side the Mish for outstanding scotland player this 6N for me.
I also think it's criminal how few people are even discussing Harris for a spot on the lions tour.
Totally agree, I was one of the one's at the start who thought he was awful and couldn't fathom how he was getting picked over Jones. This tournament changed my mind and I see now how good he is.
Thank you!!!! Exactly!!
Quite right, Van Der Merwe gets the plaudits for his finish, but who puts Dulin under pressure at the end and makes the tackle?
Heeeeeres Harris!
Personal favourite even though it didn't count for anything was the hit on Vakatawa. Harris no doubt knew the advantage was to France but still utter cleaved him in two, knocking the ball out of his hands. Finn did the litle pick up and ran over the line, not that it counted but was a little thing to get into French heads we weren't going to the push overs they'd expected.
Scotland were 2 scores away from a grandslam but finished 4th. That's a result that shows how good this Scotland side is and how tight this 6 Nations was
I'm Welsh and they deserved to come 2nd without a doubt
@@jackmorris4326 how? france only lost their games by 3 and 4 points. Plus Dulin offered scotland the win (which they gladly took).
@@vicvicking1990 they both deserved it but I think the fact that Scotland had 2 historical wins just makes them seem like they deserved it more but both teams deserved to finished 2nd
As a wales fan id be remiss not to point out Scotland also beat wales in october in wales for the first time in 18 years. Records tumbling down in front of Scotland and im thinking their banishing some demons along with them. In the last 6 months Scotland have beaten France, Wales and England away how many years since thats happened?
@@garethrichmond4388 Scotland are grand slam contenders next year without a shadow of a doubt if I was a Scotland fan I'd be very excited for the future of Scottish rugby
As a French, I really hope that Scotland maintains this level until the world cup, we need a strong 6 nations (5 out of 6...) if we want, any of us, to have any chance against Southern nations. Challenging this young french team on different tactics and pressure phase can only make them better and better going to world cup. Cheers 🍺
This was the one result that my Welsh father and Scottish mother were both happy with the result. What a game it was aswell

Thank you for talking about Harris! I've been absolutely fan boying him for the last year and I'm Welsh!
I think he's had more recognition in Wales than in Scotland because more of you guys really know their rugby than up here. But after this game nobody is in any doubt about his qualities.

It’s absolutely crazy that Ireland, Scotland and France were all just two scores away from a grand slam, and Wales only one score away. Insane Six Nations the likes of which we won’t see for a while.
Scotland was one tap tackle away from winning the 6N:(.

You actually have to take GCSEs this year?
Another absolute banger of a video, thanks for your service this Six Nations, Squidge, just quality. And cheers to Chris Harris!
this is what i needed today
Say it again for the people at the back:
*FINN RUSSELL HAS HAD A VERY GOOD SIX NATIONS!!!*
Against Wales in a losing effort he was absolutely superb. His pass to Duhan to nearly win the game? Was unreal. He had a so so game v Ireland but it was nowhere near as bad as folks make it out to be. It has become a weird function of 6N rugby that any Scottish player that begins to emerge as a potential Lion or a great player?
Get immediately picked apart. Squidge is guilty of it as well with Duhan. Guess who Duhan made look like a right muppet to score the winning try against? Damien Penaud yet we get a "feature" on why Duhan's defense is suspect? For perspective LRZ the winger everyone raved about? Missed tackles like it was his job to do so. He missed 8 tackles, for a Winger that is horrendous.
Same with Mish and all the too small BS. Hogg gets it as well with his "defensive" question marks. Hogg misses a tackle a whole wave of "defensively questionable" crap comes pouring out. No rugby player is perfect and Finn of course isn't. Yet in a game were you need a try to win v Boks? There isn't a 10 in NH I'd rather hand the ball to.
Seriously Squidge Take a well deserved break
You need it!
Interesting watching this in August and Duhan has started all three tests!
Came back to this one to leave my surprise that your prediction about DVDM ended up being off. All 3 tests is an incredible achievement for the lad, I just hope we get to see him with the ball in hand on Saturday.
I've been watching the Scotland England breakdown every day until this video came out
The video everyone was waiting for
This game was an emotional rollercoaster!
And I managed to win 4 cans of irn bru in a bet because of it 😂
Been waiting for this! Well played Scotland
So glad I’ve discovered this channel over this Six Nations!! I’m slowly becoming *cautiously* optimistic as a Scottish fan (but I also attended THAT Scotland Italy game in 2007 so I understand the perils of doing so 😂). 🏴 🏉 Love your work Squidge!
Really enjoyed watching your videos this 6N! Yes its helped Wales winning the trophies! But the humour you have brought to the games has been priceless!
Thanks Squidge
You've surpassed yourself once again, Squidge. Excellent stuff.
great video Squidge! seems a bit harsh with the VDM comments though, he scored past Penaud in pretty much the exact same fashion that the latter scored past him. wingers in general seem to be poor defenders, and he actually seems better than many others i have watched for Scotland over the years.
So happy I discovered Squidge Rugby for this six nations, I was literally throwing things at the TV during the BBC post match "analysis" after the Calcutta Cup. It was so woefully shallow and and banal. I now realise that I have hours of analysis to watch here! I love watching rugby but never really played, Squidge has opened my eyes to everything that I've been missing! Added bonus phrases like "Ali Price with cheese" and the snoop drop make this channel the absolute best. Keep up the great work, and get some sleep!

Being a Froggy and a Scotland rugby fan for years, this video gives me goosebumps in anticipation of the next year's 6 Nations and the world cup to come in 2023 !!!
Great to see someone highlighting Russell's game management
Nice presentation, thanks. I kept hearing the name Harris in the game commentary. Did not know much about him. Now I do and you are right! What a worker! And of course - Hamish!
Epic! I want to rewind all the six nations i have ever watched with your break downs to follow. Thanks mate have a rest now!

As usual, absolutely incredible content. That’s just made my week
Squidge, the usual masterclass. That is the game I watched, eloquently anatomised by you. Splendid stuff.
The level of detail in your analysis just blows me away Squidge.
Delighted to see Charris being given the credit where due! He's been the stand-out player in a v.good team! I know the Mish got player of the 6N, but he's arguably deserved that for a while now. Charris is the best defensive centre in the NH. atm, and he's no slouch in attack either. Gatland won't pick him, but in my book his name should be one of the first on the squad sheet!
PS. I love the Snoop-Dogg drop-in! Classy, and very apt!
Wow gotta say your analysis of Chris Harris's brilliant defence was... well.... brilliant!. For Harris to have that picture in his head and retreat until the optimal time to engage is truly epic imho.
Thanks for all the cracking vids this 6 nations. A well deserved rest soon I hope. 👏🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
I was so underwhelmed by Chris Harris when he first appeared on the scene but now he is arguably (maybe a weak argument) Scotland's most important player
Nah, I think (hope) Scotland is out of having linchpin players. He is a defensive beast, but if I'm honest, I'm glad Scotland are now able to demonstrate depth.
Love your analysis as awalys. Just noticed how what can be criticised of Van Der Merwe is similar to what can be criticised of Lowe.
Lowe is absolute rubbish compared to VDM
I'm literally so Scottish that your ending had me welling.
Worth waiting for. Thanks for all your thoughts and all the laughs in a great 6 Nations.
since I started watching this channel, I actually (slowly) begin to see strategy in rugby. Unfortunately, I can't play myself, but I think I can get the hang of it by watching stuff like this.
There was me loving the 'Mish and there you were loving the Harris. Great video as always. What a cracking game!
You know Dulin was exhausted when he thought he could score an 18 points try from his own 22 at the 82'! :D

Awesome video again. Absolutely brilliant and thank you so much for all the 6 nations videos this year.
Fantastic analysis Squidge. Harris may not be very exciting going forwards but what a defender!
I really feel like you overestimated the confidence of the french players. Every media in France was saying that this would be a tough game, that we shouldn't underestimate the Scots. The players themselves said that they were worried by the the scots and I think them kicking the penalties instead of looking for tries is evidence of that.
Ollivon said we had a title chance which is a huge deal for a nation that hasn't won in 11 years. It wasn't an arrogant statement
Yeah I thought the reaction was strange. What was the French captain supposed to say "no I don't think we will win, I don't even want to win the trophy". Media spinning up a storm, it worked in Scotland's favour.
Came here to say exactly that. Yeah, we literally lost last year's 6N with a defeat to Scotland. Why on earth would we underestimate them now ?
I know there's a thing with the French supposedly being arrogant, but come on, that is a cliché, not a framework for actual analysis. Whatever we do, we end up being painted as arrogant because it fits the pre-made narrative. French = arrogant, Italian = not serious, etc. Check facts first, then label what you notice with the appropriate word. Do not go the other way, looking for potential signs of arrogance because, come on, they're French, with a chance at winning the title, they must be arrogant, right ?
@@vicl6030 apparently wanting to win when you're a good side is arrogance. you're supposed to let the lesser sides win. Absolute joke, the French captain was well within his rights to say what he said, if only you had any other 15 in pro rugby at full back instead of Dulin and you would have won that game.
I love +SquidgeRugby and his analysis, he's spot on things I don't notice, but indeed, France DID NOT underestimated Scotland. We know it's always a tricky game, and they play our weaknesses very well.
Hats off to them, though, they deserved their victory (even if it was a stupid move by Dulin, shit happens). Im glad to see a strong Scotland team, and a great tournament.
And France is going into the RWC bleeding, wounded. Dangerous...
@@jamesm5497 "Lesser sides?" Wow... Now that's a disrespectful comment.
Scotland were never a "lesser" side.
They convincingly beat England (The team who beat France and kept out their own 22 for the entire 2nd half)
It took a desperate tap tackle to stop Scots from beating Wales, a team who dominated the majority of the match against France and who would've won if the penalty try had been given or the final penalty not conceeded.
"Lesser teams" do me favour!
Great stuff as usual - best 6 nations analysis

Glad to see someone not over-hyping Duhan VDM... Yes he's strong, yes he's fast, but someone that fast and that strong really needs to do better defensively.
Less missed tackles than LRZ.....
Great vid, feel like its a little harsh on Van De Merwe, you could find a clip of pretty much every test level winger missing a similar tackle. Stockdale and Teddy do it at least once a match 😅
Maybe just a nudge to say "don't get carried away Scotland fans". VDM is lethal in attack, but not brilliant all over the pitch
@@jamesm5497 Fair enough, I've got a lot of sympathy for wingers missing tackles, I played lock and the few times I drifted out to defend near the touchline was an absolute nightmare!
@@anthonymclaughlin9222 you feel like youve got a mile of space to defend, horrible position to play, it's why I hid behind the ruck my whole life.

Been waiting for this one😄🏴🏴
Been really looking forward to this one! Love your content mate
As an Englishman who ALWAYS supports the home nations regardless of regional rivalries...
I am EXCITED to watch Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the time leading up to the World Cup
As a French supporter, this one doesn't feel like a loss. I was way more sad about the England game. Let me explain myself: England game, we lost fair and square, not much to debate. This game, both team played well, but it was clear after the first half that there was noway for France to win by 21+ points, and so it was very unlikely that they will win the 6N. At the end of the game, after we won the ball back, to me the game was over ( and to many of the French player, as you see them just stop). But Dulin felt like he had to do more, like get another try to at least equate Wales's points, and loose of PD. If it was ANY other scenarios, like a knockout game, or if we had won against England, he would have just kicked the ball out, won the game, move on. I know lots of people make the comparison with how France won against Wales, but this was different. When Wales had the possession, the clock was still running, and they needed to make no mistake for another minute before winning the game. Here, there was nothing stopping France from winning apart from ego?( just a brain fade tbh). I'm not saying Scotland doesn't deserve the win, heck they play so well. I'm just saying that French people shouldn't be that sad about it, but also that scotland shouldn't make a big deal about winning, and act like they stole that game in a heroic fashion winning at the last minute etc. In the end, it didn't even change the final table, but no one really cares about aything else than who won the 6N( me included, don't care if we finish 2/3/4).
As a Welsh fan I was bloody delighted by the score but jokes aside it was a great match
As a welshman this game cured me of my week long depression. By the end i had forgotten about wales winning the championship, i was fully enjoying Scotland’s performance. Diolch yn fawr Alban.
