So how did France massacre England? | Six Nations 2023 Analysis

  • Simply put, one of the all-time great performances. This weekend, France ripped England limb from limb as they played some breathtaking rugby to inflict the biggest away win Twickenham had ever seen, and set their World Cup hopes back alight. So how did they do it, and just what is wrong with England?

    England fan and France were so good to watch. I think England didn't play near their best, but I think that French performance would have shamed pretty much any other team in the world.
    The old "you never know which French team will turn up" adage is still as true today as it was yesteryear. A decade ago they could play really well or really badly. It's still the same today, the window has just moved and on their worst day they're just average and on their best they play rugby that defies belief with its brilliance.

      Right, dut don't forget they in the last 18 months before defeat against Irish team in this 6 Nations tournament, they beat all teams, and made a 15 in a row victories... They started on low level this tournament because all players were really tired because if Top 14. After 2 weeks of holidays and no games in team, they play their level. And unfortunately it was against England's team.

    • @sylvainrivet8987

      Nope, everything that this video shows is that it is no flair, there is work, so much work to prepare what they achieved. The point is that NOW this is totally common, MANY teams play wonderfull rugby. The key questions seems to me that you have to read the referee better than your opponents to win a game... but clearly France is able to do so aswell, which was the case only very rarely in the past.

    • @natexior8408
      @natexior8408 Год назад

      In some way, I wish that France could be more consistent, but in another way, the only time where they were predictable was when they were nowhere to be seen...
      So, I'm glad to see these moments of brillance happen again.
      It comes just at the right time : in a world cup year, when both England, New Zeland and South Africa have rough times.
      We still need both luck on our side and a high momentum to stand a chance against Ireland though.

      The problem with these teams is can they grind out a result where the pressure is on in a semi or in a final? No need for expansive rugby just tight, gritty playing for time and seeing who blinks first. Who makes a mistake first, who is favoured by the bounce of the egg. With bodies aching and all the celebrations to get to this point.

As much as I enjoyed France's performance and the record-breaking Twickenham victory, I also remember a dominating England squad that could not be stopped. Swings and roundabouts, as we say in Paris. France's winning team is just getting there, after years of second-guessing, team building and hard work. It takes time to renew and reinvent an international team. It's our time (well, Ireland's time too, to be honest), but England will be back on top eventually and give us the thrilling experiences I used to witness in Twickenham in the old days. @StevenAlwine Год назад +6

      I'm glad I'm not the only person who watched that stretch of play and said, "Wow, this is some of the best movement I've seen from England in a year." I honestly believe the biggest problem with the Smith/Farrell combo is on the defensive side of the ball because, despite his best efforts otherwise, Farrell can't stop himself from playing defense like a disruptive 10 rather than a line-holding tackle absorbing center.

    • @Coverdrive50

      @steven Alwine when playing outside smith Farrell to me defends like someone who doesn’t trust his inside man. • @colstoun4762
      @colstoun4762 Год назад

      @ChrisA_No9 I think you are totally correct. JVP is struggling at this level though he’s been pretty good playing 2nd tier teams and may still come good. No one in the forwards is really having that great a time despite Willis being disruptive at times there hasn’t been a standout ball carrier defensive leader for them. I would have liked this weekend to see Smith Farrell Tuilagi with Farrell more secure having a big defensive presence outside him in the form of tuilagi

    • @howzitson
      @howzitson Год назад

      @@StevenAlwine I wouldn't blame Farrell at all, Smith is a woeful defender, and should let himself be led instead of being inconsistent with Farrell. Who leads the English defence in general do you think? With France and Ireland it's 13... but I don't ever remember seeing Slade do similar stuff to either of them. So feels like Farrell's filling a gap he shouldn't have to.

    Great analysis, as always. I had a 2nd look at the game yesterday and there were two glaring issues for England. Their defense and their forwards. Defense is hard work that the entire team needs to buy into, England didn't work hard enough. The English forwards were not abrasive or aggressive enough. So many turn-overs came from the forwards not rucking and going into contact without support. That made the game much easier for France. That being said, the French were just brilliant. They're such an intelligent team. If only the RWC pools were structured differently, as at the moment it seems as if the Final would be played in the Quarter Finals. To have the top 5 teams in the world spread across two pools is an absolute farce.

      Smith took a beautiful quick move deep into the French line and none of the forwards supported him 10 yards out turnover rugby is a game of fine margins normally little things like that make a huge difference

    In this game Galthié used one of his invention/ trick ( that's what i heard) : the 15 (Ramos)switching sometimes position with the 10 like putting Farrell at 12 and Smith at 10. A variation of the two play markers in the backline. The NZ does it too, like some other. It goes back to Galthié's work as a consultant with the Pumas. I hope my informations on this topic are right. Maybe it's something like an urban myth. Anyway it worked beautifuly on that day.

      It comes from the Colommiers method and Pierre Villepreux, fluidity between players to keep the momentum no matter what, order in chaos. You can watch the Wiggle Rugby video of "why is the french attack so frightening" that explains the history (including the staff included in the current XV du Coq : Galthié, Labit...) of this method.
      It has become common in many teams, but we even switch back or second rows for the 10 sometimes.
      (Also, you can notice that when Jalibert enters for N'Tamack, he takes the spot of 15, while Ramos becomes the 10, so it was all part of the game plan anyways ;)
