- The tournament favourites and recent World Cup finalists opened their 2020 Six Nations by heading to Paris ready to face a much-anticipated new-look French team, to find out the hype was very real. So how did France tear England apart, and what did Eddie Jones' side get wrong?

I'm French and I must say that your definition of French rugby, "France happens" (or most likely does not happen like those 5-6 last years), is the closest to perfection I've ever heard. Keep the good job man, love you channel.
As a former number 2 Basque/French guy I 100% agree, such a great say to nail it down. Love you Scotland especially as a military sword collector/ addict but we need to beat you down guys!
Dupont is a french national treasure.
If Eddie Jones watched squidge then he would've known
I really wonder how many professional players and coaches watch squidge. Alot of free, quality analysis.
Poopski McJetski Why you watching him then?

@Poopski McJetski You're right, let me just turn over to the 'Poopski McJetski' channel full of detailed analysis of international rugby. Oh, there isn't one.

Dad jokes, Squidge, but welcome.
Came here to make the same comment 😂
Wow, what a commentary. I’m English but couldn’t agree more. Really insightful - you offer deeper insights and more value than any of the rugby RUclipsrs out there.
Couldn't agree more.
there been a great scarcity in terms of praise, glad to see some contribution
As a South African who didn't see the game, I was pleasantly surprised by that comparison of SA's and England's mauls. Thanks Squidge. 😁
As a South African who did watch the game, it was funny AF watching England try to repeat our maul from the RWC final... and butcher it XD There can be only one Rassie!
I watched most of the game, missed that maul though.

He was the most balanced pundit there. A right arsehole on the field but a gentleman off it, it seems.
As a massive England fan it hurts me to agree with every word of this. Spot on! Oh Eddie, “There won’t be a World Cup hangover” bollocks! “The salary cap won’t affect the players” bollocks! Well played France.
Thanks mate it's an important win for after so many bitter years, you are the benchmark in the northern hemisphere.
I guess for you a victory will shine even more if the French team plays a better rugby.

Thanks for both videos, and to answer your little rant at the end, please don't stop covering women's games, especially the ones like last w-e's France v England, it's always a pleasure to watch more great rugby and listen to your analysis.
Brilliant analysis Squidge. I couldn't believe that England tried to copy Rassie's move.
I was so annoyed about the ref not seeing 2 slapdowns from itoje less than 10m from the line... was starting to question my understanding of the laws... I am glad you included it in the video!
Johnny may wasn’t the only player on the other side of the post, Bouthier was marking him (off camera).
and Johnny wasn't the fastest player on the field, it was Thomas.

Allez les bleus! Great video as per usual! Keep up the good work! Wales France will be the greatest international game since the world cup, i can't wait! (And please continue video on women's rugby)
Discoverd your channel for the RWC Wales-France Quarter Final video. That was so good, and funny. I'm re-discovering rugby with your analysis. Thank you
Squidge, I just went back and watched the "Rassie maul" on NBCSports Gold, ...followed by Eddie's post-game rhubarbmuttergrumble ...and then your analysis of the Boks win including your insightful exploration of the context, the leadup to the maul and its complexity, ...then - finally - your analysis of how Eddie screwed up trying to emulate it.
All of this leaves me no option other than to say two things; 1) you are a far better analyst of the game than anyone in the English dressing room and 2) Eddie Jones is starting to believe his own preconception of his own brilliance. Neither of these are good for England.
I used to follow The 1014 ... but they are no longer available so now you are my goto analyst of international rugby. Thank you.
ps.; I believe Farrell simply fluffed the call after winning the coin toss in the final, he thought Siya had won it (Barnes talks to Siya before he looks at Farrell) and that Furman was suffering from the same disorder - the 'moment' was larger than they were.
French defense was amazing and really rattled the English, their attacking game went all haphazard lol.
Rugby is the game I love whether its played by men, women or wombles....keep up the excellent work squidge
England: The best way to recover from that dreadful rwc final defeat... is to steal and copy from the springbok.
that's classic
All sports teams: What have other teams done that really fucked us up? Lets try some of that.
*Gets it wrong * loses
Well...they have their forwards coach now, so it’s not really a big surprise to see some of their tactics being adopted.
@@deskjockeyfitness Well the least they could do, is actually do it right...
To beat France I feel you have to score 31 points because you can easily concede 30 with that back line

Came here to say that, just KNEW it wouldn't be original. Just liked yours instead

Ah, I see you too are a man of culture.
So much truth in the statement above... simplicity is bliss
England fan here, can't disagree with any of this, especially Youngs, when he's on he's 'good' but he's had shockers past few games.
Gin he’s finished mate! Been a good servant over the years but he’s too slow in everything he does. When england as a team are on top he’s average but when the pressure is on and we’re behind he’s useless! My biggest bugbear with him is when he is the first support player at the tackle and it’s blatantly obvious we’re going to lose possession and he doesn’t commit into the ruck!!! Just rather stand there hoping some else gets there in time
@@remyd1984 Lol yep, agree with you. At least Heinz is solid, reliable and doesn't seem to have these regular brain fades passing to absolutely no one. Not much flair, but can live with that. Can't describe how many times I sighed watching him pass to a stationary forward in that France game, literally the exact opposite of what squidge outlined from Dupont. Granted, forwards probably didn't help but he's there to martial them.
Yes up until the latter end of the world cup I rated him as one of the best scrum halves in the world but he unfortunately is not playing in form right now.
Ben Grant he’s been shit for years, what are you on about.
@Gin I've thought Youngs has been slow for a while. It's clear when England need quick ball Youngs will faff about, uming and ahing, instead of propelling the ball away from a ruck like a bar of soap flying out of the grasp of wet, soapy hands. In that match he very clearly slowed down England's attacking pace and momentum.
What a great insight, former Basque/ French Number 2 speaking, love the spirit especially since I love that French team, for the very first time since 2007 to be frank. see you soon guys take care!
from a Frenchman who watches 6 nations, knows the rules, but doesn't necessarily understand the intricacies of the game, this video was really entertaining!
Thanks for your insight and analysis of this game. Hadn't noticed the timing problem in England's backs. And good for you for making a video on women's rugby. The ladies have shown both passion and progress that deserves recognition.
You're doing the Lord's work with the Willi Heinz puns.
My favourite rugby analyst (together with Nick Mallet) even though it takes one to muster all your superhuman effort to track the pace at which you talk. If only youtube had the Netflix 10sec rewind! Love it though!

Brilliant analysis Squidge, you nailed it! Keep going with the women's coverage, but get some sleep!
No coverage of Bouthier's complete monster punt. For shame...
Ohhhh I’ve been waiting for this
The Heinz getting the beans knocked out of him joke 💯
As one of the first coaches of Women's rugby, I truly enjoy how they have grown the game. Back to England. The whole make up of their team was wrong and it showed. They have no captain and therefore no leadership, which is essential in retrieving something from an inspired game as the young French side played. Young here is the key word. This fresh French side, inspired by Crazy Eddies foolish words, are used to playing together and are former World beaters. Eddie cannot interpret the South African methods because his skill set is too small and his Ego too big! Let him play favorites and go into a wet, windy and cold Murrayfield this weekend!
A lot happened in this match itself, but you can't ignore the fact that the English squad had some odd selections like *TOM CURRY* at 8.
Also, Jonny May being the one in position to score the try that got flubbed by the abysmal positioning by the English 15 is made bittersweet by him being the English try scorer from that match.
And I'm so appreciative of the woman's game you covered.
With Vinipola out (injured?), England lacked the heavy ball carrier to try and get across the defence line. Then Tuilagi went off and it was lights out for them.
May was incredible in his two tries, but he pulled out of the tackle that led to France's second and waited for the whistle blow that never came. That is criminal at this level of the game but overall more positives than negatives.
As an England fan, this is painful. That said, it's so true and well done I have to take my hat off to Squidge👏
I thought England would just blame the Springboks again ...
The single best analysis and humorous to boot! Genius thank you
This was truly one of those game which was painful to watch again on this video but I can never miss one of your videos. Better team on simply put. Great video
Your`re back!! Onestly felt so alone watching the match wondering what you were thinking of it!! This six nations just took a whole new flavour :)
That'll teach Eddie for not watching your videos!
That last sentence is soooooo beautiful XD
7:45 Il y'a bouthier qui le couvre de l'autre coté du terrain
they was bouthier covering him on the otherside
it's true but it was still a good opportunity

I think French team will be ready for the next World Cup, they are young and make a lot of mistake but it's a new team so they will develop their rugby until 2023 to be ready to win the world cup.it's their true goal. If France win six nations it's just a bonus.
Love your content man. Always spot on. Much higher standard than all the pundits on TV.

"Knocked all the beans out of him" made me giggle.
Who would pull out the best game? Fairbanks that have been consistently performing in the premiership and that is stepping in a well organised and cohesive team or Bouthier that started at national level 10 games ago and that is tepping in usually messy team that is just starting to build its structure?
As an English fan this game hurt me to watch, I mean come on we made it to the finals last year and this is how we start the new world cup cycle? At least France looks promising this year.
Brilliant analysis as ever Squidge. Thank you. Loved the Andy Goode comment!
I mean, you know this already, but your analysis is genuinely fantastic.
Ntamack is the best young fly half since Dan Carter in my eyes, he's got everything. Tactically astute, attacks the gain line, offloads, has laser like passing, nails his kicks at goal and mixes it all up so you don't know what's coming. His temperament is his biggest asset though. Just looks to the Manor born
He's good but caaalm down on the best since dan carter talk, thats a tad too far
@@candycain2327 why not? Ntamacks only 20 remember! Carter didn't even get his first All Black cap until he was 21 so you could say Ntamacks maybe even slightly better at that age, he's won unde 20 World cups and he's one of the reasons Toulouse have started to perform again. He made 2 world class fly halves opposite him look pretty ordinary aswell, and it's not the first time either. The boys a superstar in the making
@@thecarrotmonster8827 no sexton and Barrett are better , plus, ntamack is good when his team are protecting him and going fowards but not so good under pressure and tackling, good at kicking but misses also, like against the welsh in japan.
@@theric66Yeah Barretts that good he's been punted to fullback! Struggles to control a game and is not the best goal kicker by any stretch. Sextons 34 and was almost a the same generation as Carter and played against him loads of times, 14 years older than young Roman aswell
@@thecarrotmonster8827 don't exagerate, i like N'Tamack, maybe he began before Carter's age, but it's France, we lack of good flyhalf since a decade... then yes, he is good, but don't overrate him... he's just the best france is able to put on the pitch... NZ has always had great concurrence at flyhalf post, even with Carter, they had a good replacement inc ase of injury... France has nothing at flyhalf for 10-12 years...
And thank you for the perfect analysis of the women's game in the previous video. Your work is amazing !!

Just stumbled upon this channel and this particular video; very interesting content, spot-on analysis, a great watch! 👏👏
Another awesome review buddy. Really appreciate the effort and the passion
A brilliant evaluationn,,,from a Welshman in Japan,,,,Cheers young fella
France is the one team that I want to win a rugby world cup that will never actually pull it off. This is partly because, the moment they play against a team like South Africa, SA would just make the game so slow that they can't do anything.
Fair play. You called it in an earlier video. Love the presentation in your vids.
I adore how much you clearly relished delivering those beans-related jokes.
...wait...relished...is that a pun too?
Having this video quoted on House of Rugby made me very proud for no reason
I don't want to watch this, but if Squidge can make himself do the ones on England beating Wales I can watch this.
I'm hiding behind the sofa. But I'm watching.
Brilliant as always squidge. Love your work mate keep it up. I enjoyed your appearance on the mud and blood pod cast a couple of weeks back.
With the attack failing to cope with the French defence, someone should have started kicking drop goals. I watched us get turned over 5 times in the French 22 before giving up. That could have been 15 points.
With ease .. is the answer. England play a 4 at 6, a 7 at 8 and a 10 at 12 .. pick players for their correct position would be a good start for Eddie these days. Sinkler kept getting given the ball whilst static .. he was notably shit (obviously still concussed from the RWC) and Youngs distribution was really slow meaning the defence was always set. Piss poor show from England who basically failed to show up again .. gonna get a hammering up in Scotland .. If they thought Paris was hostile ...
Enjoyed this tremendously. The comparison of tactics and results is so much more useful than trying to read the rugby "law book." PS: I now have subscribed.
The fact that people unsubscribe from content on channels that is women focused is staggering....
This was educational and painful from an English perspective - thanks Squidge 😁
Truth is France was already emerging in RWC2019, but for a brain fart Foul play should have been in the Semi vs RSA, as they were better than Wales till that point. Also RSA as a Bok, could have been tested & possibily eliminated, where they were broadly always a sniff ahead on a grinding close game vs Wales. Good point on 80 Min fitness as Wales may well do the double at home, as a well conditioned side.
Outstanding as usual my guy! Been checking all day for this! Shared with all my english friends hahahaha
With Willie Heinz in the England side can’t wait for some bean jokes
From an England fan, great analysis Squidge..
Squidge right on the money yet again. Spot on. Thank you!
So I have a theory on Owen Farrells two knock-ons. Earlier when France were in the England 22 Farrell is forced to make an actual tackle (a opposed to flying shoulder first into his head) on Vakatawa and I think it made him shit himself. Normally he's so well composed but the weight of the turd sitting in his shorts was enough to throw him off balance and thus the missed pass. Then by the time the second half rolls around and he's got some clean undies he's able to better organize things and England start their comeback.
Ford just punted the ball aimlessly back to the french which you haven't even mentioned, you need to rewind a bit more to see how the frogs got the ball in the first place!!
Very good new staff and excellent casting on the pitch, it's easy to understand why this French team is at this level.
interesting that you didnt mention that England missed out on 2 scrum penalties(one on the 5m line) because Tom Curry has no idea how to keep the ball in the scrum
Excellent analysis as always. French rugby really should be on top more often with all the resources and player stocks they have.
as a french (and swiss), I'd say the biggest problem of the french team is holding far too long on its veteran instead of welcoming the youngster... they also tend to be too focused on what made other beat them in the world cup... hence big buff guys in 2019... with no agility... not everyone can have bufalos that run antelopes... apparently, Laporte finally understood that the french way was to dodge, not to topple, and that is the main ingredient of the so called french flair... (with players that have a very "bird view of the game)
I’ve noticed that we can’t come back from going behind the only way we win games is with a firing start which we are good at
Hello, at 8'21 May is not alone there is still bouthier but we don't see him !
Thank you. English too but totally fair and informative analysis as always young sir
i rewind every time he talks about the springboks and watch the segment twice
In fairness to Furbank, that line was him trying to get out Ford’s way for a crossfield, and he did draw vakatawa. It looked to me like he wanted Young’s to go out the back to ford and ford to kick but, as you said, I don’t know why he didn’t just stay wide.
Also, it allowed him a legit reason to be in front of ford as a blocker since there were no forwards to protect him.
If Galthié managed to create a good durable link between 9 and 10, solidify the pack, especially the front line, and if Ntamak is able to score above 80-90% of its kicks, we may have a team for big events. There is envy. We need huge technical work (and basically, not a Top 14 but a Top 10 French tournament).
I found that the most important weakness of England those last years is : they don't have the mental to fight back when they lose. England used to be able to make other team play bad while winning against its team. A thing Ireland have been doing quite well the last decade.
I mean, with our problems and weak team and team management, we managed to beat England 6 times this last decade while losing only 8 times.
Well done France!
Absolutely lost it at the "Yup, need that guy on the team" at 9:44
Loving the idea of a "twat purge" being self imposed by the very nature of them being twats 😂
Also, despite being both an England and Leicester fan, I think it's time for Ben Youngs to be the new Huget. I look forward to many "in a game where Ben Youngs, did this..."
Ben Youngs finished that game half an hour after everyone else had left the stadium, he's sooooo sloooooow.
