    I used to be a critic of Russell, because I felt his game management wasn't there and he'd often try and force play that wasn't on and create play at every opportunity. He's really matured the last few years and has really developed that area of his game and I can say my opinion of him has changed and I feel he is genuinely world-class and is now getting the full recognition he deserves. If he was in the AB's people would be absolutely raving about him.

    I actually love this guy. The fact that Russell is still seen by some as a kind of maverick, renegade that can't be trusted basically sums up everything that's wrong with rugby right now. Turgid, dull kicking games with teams preferring to play without the ball, coaches afraid to risk playing a player of Russell's skillset...
    I understand it's "win at all costs" and fans of teams winning with this horrible rugby will say "the scoreboard is all that counts", but it will make casual viewers switch off and stifle the games growth.
    I really don't know what the solution is, but when die-hard rugby lovers can't be bothered to watch the deciding test of a 3 match series because of how shit the first 2 tests were (me) then the game has a problem.

    • @biondinoxyz1993

      I agree 100%,however it is not up to national coaches to promote entertainment. SA play bad, negative rugby and they won, we cannot ask Erasmus to play more enjoyable rugby it is the rules that should promote expansive rugby and make it profitable. I don't know how, but unfortunately if you think of a winning team that plays amazing rugby that is the All blacks. UK, SA with different degrees nowadays they all play similar brands of rugby. Hopefully France will disjoint this trend and lead the way hand to hand with the All Blacks

    • @hughneil7212
      @hughneil7212 3 года назад +16

      I have said this a lot and I will keep saying it, everyone complains about size inflation of the players and how limiting substitutions will fix that. It is much easier than that, stop giving scrum penalties, free kick instead. When there are no penalties to be milked, the 24 stone front row is pointless, there will be no point in the second shove that means that scrums fall over or the prop not getting the perfect hit so he drops the scrum and it's reset 5 times, win-win. Then when they have made that decision, they will go back to proper scrums where the ball is delivered straight and up the middle and there is still a purpose for the scrum as there is a chance to compete. The added effect of that is that there is no chance of being sin binned because the guy opposite you is better at pushing or better at cheating.

    Carter was the first to master that dummy pass to the outside, accelerate, fend inside.
    The All Blacks took that cross kick up north, bc the Springboks had employed a 'rush up & in' type defense & an 'aerial ping pong' attack type tactics to win games. This in turn created an approach by the Coaches that needed to be both innovative, & assured. Thus, the 2 pronged 1&2 reciever formation was conceived. Before this the Bokke were; we don't want the ball, you play all the rugby. The following year commentators the world over were saying 'kick to that AB back 3 @ yr own peril' lol. Reckless kicks were punished.

    Its funny how prior to the final test vs SA everyone was calling him inconsistent and a maverick etc, but after it he is now the best 10 in the world.
    Form is temporary, class is permanent. He has been world class for years, and its laughable when a player like Biggar is rated ahead of him simply because he plays for a better international team. I'm a Scotland fan and remember not so long ago we were finishing bottom of the 6N pile with 0 wins, with Duncan Weir at fly half. Fast forward 5 years or so and we were a penalty kick away from winning the 6N, with a pack that is fairly mediocre (as shown with how few players we got in to the Lions forward pack, although Watson was very unlucky).
    So if he was playing for literally any other of the 6N sides (bar Italy) that team would be winning it most years. He has almost single handedly dragged as from being cannon fodder to title contention.
    The only area I sometimes have doubts for is his goal kicking. If he makes the first once he can get 100% throughout the match, but if he misses he tends to miss a couple more afterwards. So it's more of a confidence thing I suppose.
    Perhaps Russell is now getting the credit he deserves. Put a prime Dan Carter in the Scotland side and we would still struggle to win anything, but would that mean he isnt world class? Of course not! So we should stop judging a players quality on the number of trophies they have won, especially at international level when you are inhibited by the standard of players around you.

      @@werieawesome8530 deluded. Possibly the 7th or 8th pick lock till he demonstrates his captaincy ability not to take the points in Test 3. AWJ and LW cost the series and only chosen by sugar daddy Gatland. Add in Biggar, Owens and TF and you have 5 places for players not well past their peak. From England add Farrell, Mako, Hill, and Lawes( except 30 mins) Currie who was plain average and Watson who couldn’t even look good in the warm ups. Throw in Murray the slowest 9;since Greig Laidlaw. Nearly a third of the choices wasted. Poor coach and captain.

    To me, FR embodied the style of rugby that the B&I Lions should’ve played throughout the series against the Boks… was really disappointing see the Lions adopt a gameplay that tried to “out-bok’ the Boks. Outside of Russel and Marcus, there were literally no playmakers (Farrell was a complete and utter no-show). Russel is on his way to setting the bar for fly-halves over the next few years.
