lower cover? you mean fairing? you mean the belly pan? Or are you talking about the front cylinder's timing belt cover with the extra air intake at 4:35 ? If so it's purely for ventilation, it might help the belts keep cool and certainly help removes any debris, but seriously doubt it does anything to air-cool the engine considering the cylinders are water cooled. And don't worry about debris getting in, they've got a pretty decent filter at the front. great question BTW, if you notice the slats at the back of the rear cylinder's timing belt cover, that's the exhaust. if you have air going in, you gotta have air going out somewhere
