- Two nights before the premiere of Caddyshack, Johnny Carson welcomed Rodney Dangerfield to the Tonight Show stage, “My next guest has a lot of things going. He’s starring in a movie which opens nationally Friday, July 25th, called Caddyshack. He’s got a new album out called No Respect. He’s a good friend and a funny man. Would you welcome, Rodney Dangerfield!”
Originally aired July 23, 1980 on the Tonight Show.
0:59 “I checked into a hotel, I asked the bellhop to handle my bag. He started to feel up my wife.”
2:00 “I was a very ugly kid. Everytime my old man wanted to have sex, my mother showed him my picture.”
6:47 “I know I’m getting old. I’m at the age now if I hear someone goes both ways, I figure it’s number one and number two.”

"I told my therapist I'm having suicidal thoughts. He said I had to start paying him in advance." - Rodney Dangerfield. Genius.
That is gold
true dat!
That's the one right there 🤣🤣
classic
Jj 😮
I love how he does his stand-up routine, then sits down for the interview, and the interview is just a continued stand-up routine.
Let me tell ya, John...
Robin williams was the same. Maybe there is a connection of a sad childhood having to cover up your true feelings
His sit-down routine is just as flawless!
@dwaynoinsano5053 lol Yep! From a stand-up to a sit-down!
@@nicholastricarico185 A lot of people have sad childhoods but most of them don't become hilarious comics...there's more to it
The older you get, the more relatable Rodney becomes. What a legend
100% - I used to dislike his style, as I've gotten older I am a huge fan ha
The older I get the more I realize how stupid stand up comedy is.
Especially his short one liner style “jokes”.

Hello 🏚️🇺🇸⚰️🪦❗📰🤫✍️📃I'm a private self fund researcher from Harrisburg Pa. A comedian and writer. Not easy to write certain words in a joke to suddenly come up with a perfect storm endings.
people who think what he does is easy have no idea how hard it actually is. He never fumbles over is words either. The guy was a treasure
It's a completely different skillset from just being socially funny. And there's timing. The laughter should die down enough for your next lines to be heard, but not too late that you get silence.
Ask a comedian how he writes his jokes, he will say they are not jokes they are tough tough work.
By themselves most of the jokes were funny; but Rodney knew how to push them into the stratosphere. My favourite, which has now passed its best date, is "I get no respect. I'm in the elevator, the guy always says "Basement?" Oh man...
@@fewerbeansplease Funny, never heard that one. I tell his old jokes and people think I made them up. I don't care if they are old or have heard them before they are still funny.
@@dickrichard626 His jokes are honed over time and many tests and the clubs. These aren't just pulled out of nowhere. They're carefully crafted, practiced and timed. Because they're on-liners he can string them together with some clever transitions. Add to that Rodney was VERY quick and could break out many of his classic jokes for many conversation occasions.
The act never ended and the interview never started... wild.
Lol
"...that's on, right?"
Legend one of kind right there lol
Carson doesn’t even say anything for awhile after RD sits down, cuz the jokes are just going to keep on coming.
Same thing with Bob Hope, who Johnny didn't like for that reason. I don't know how Carson personally felt about Rodney?
He just oozes stage presence... he was always in complete control of the audience. A titan of American comedy.
Well said.
My fave! I miss him!
The GOAT of one liners.
Rodney didn't find himself until late into his career. You see the highlights of him at his best but this wasn't his original act.
I think you can make that worldwide. Everywhere he went, he was popular. RIP Rodney. 😢😅❤😂
Mr. Dangerfield is funnier than any other comedian I have seen. His jokes are so clever, he leaves just enough time for the audience to grasp what he said, and yet he is so quick to get the next joke out while the audience is nearly done laughing over the previous one. His acts are pure perfection.
RIP A GENIUS
😅 your number 1
"My wife and I lived happily for 25 years. And then we met."

You’re right…
I have a small penis…4 inches
Some women don’t like them that big around tho
This man had the biggest heart I just listened to his biography and it just broke my heart he was so abused as a child his mother was so cruel to him his dad took off and he never saw him as cruel as his mother was he went to work as a little boy to support her and himself so they could eat he supported her forever he’s just amazing. He worked forever and ever to get a break as a comedian went through so much then his wife died and he gave up everything to support his two kids he didn’t want to abandon them. He had so much love and he was so darn funny. I just loved him and I miss him He also helped so many comedians get their start nobody does that what a great man!!!!♥️

I am 60 so he was in my time I seen him live he never slowed down. He was awesome
Never gets old
My favorite joke of all time from this legend. "I had so much acne as a teenager I once fell asleep in the library and when I woke up a blind girl was reading my face "
"I told my doctor, 'every morning I look in the mirror and want to throw up, what's wrong with me'? He said, 'I don't know, but your eyesight is perfect'".
My uncle’s dying wish was to have me sitting on his lap. He was in the electric chair.
my favorite line of his: "this lady told me 'come over, there's nobody home.' i went over, there was nobody home!"
Lol
All time great joke!
I get no respect!
Lmao
Anderson Paak sampled that for a song intro with J Cole - Triply
Carson is just staying out of his way and enjoying the ride 😂 Ed’s laughing is great too
This guy was an absolute genius, I thought he was just as good in the movies as he was on stage doing stand-up. He nearly stole the entire movie in Caddyshack
And charisma
He did steal the entire movie. Ted Knight and Rodney did not get along. I almost got head from Amelia Earhart.
"Now I know why Tigers eat their young."
I agree he was a good part of the movie
You buy a hat like that you get a free bowl of soup. 😄

Pretty cool to see him promoting Caddyshack just before it took off and became a huge classic.
"The movie is longer than that really" - Still the best comeback to clip commenting to this date. What an icon.
No one thought it was going to be a hit or classic. He was probably promoting it because of his contract.
I know thinking the same thing
Rodney made the movie
that's really cool. he had no idea he was just in quite possible the best comedy of all time. I think it is, not many better if it isn't.

That tie still isn't loosened. After all those tries
It seems like he always has the top button unbuttoned but the tie synched all the way up, which is more comfy than with the button done up. You wear a suit your whole life, you find your ways to be comfy.

Rodney’s childhood was rough. His father was estranged from the family, his mother was cold. Money was tight but he was a hustler and dealt with things without feeling sorry for himself. He failed at comedy and sold aluminum siding. When he came back to comedy, he found his stride. An amazing man.
