Known for his iconic books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Gonzo Journalism, Thompson was a source of inspiration to many. In this video, I'm sharing some of his most shocking and life-changing advice on finding your purpose and living a meaningful life. I started reading Hunter S Thompson right before he took his life. I planned on asking for an autograph of my copy of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." I was depressed and bummed when learning of his death. I learned about the Doonsbury character "Uncle Duke" I had heard he disliked the character. But to cheer myself up I found a poster that showed the character in a Hunter like pose. I started to order a copy but then did not go through with the order. About 3 weeks later the poster arrived. Puzzled, I called the company and asked why they shipped the poster. They told me they had no record of my order, no information on file, and I must be mistaken. I was never charged for the poster. I still joke to this day, it was a gift from Hunter S. Thompson.

Well put. I became concious of HST because I loved the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I really started to fall in love with his writings later and I've read most of his books and pieces. I feel like that is what made him so great. He was kinda crazy and a lot of fun, so he caught peoples attention. But he captivated them with his intelligent and very funny writings. I mean the short piece he wrote on 911 the day after the attack, is still amazing to me, he pretty much predicted exactly what happend in the years after. He was hella sharp, even in his later years.
HST was well grounded in the rigors of literature studies. As a high school student, he became a member of a youth literary society in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. This was a high achievement and one he was most proud of. When he was charged with armed robbery (later acquitted) he was struck from the rolls of this literary society. Later in life he was reinstated, and Thompson was elated over this and credited his membership as the foundation to all his professional work. See Athenaeum Literary Association; Hunter S. @@lupo3694I used to like that movie when I was a kid and read some of his stuff, but being older now I know he was sort of a slime ball, especially with all the “snuff film” crap I’m not down with any of it, he was no Christian not a good person in general, I could take it or leave it, I like the counter culture aspect but that’s about it

It's easy to see the ones who have never even thought to choose, or if they have, haven't, out of fear - at a glance.
This is very well-said. It helped to give me perspective on my own experiences, as well as giving me some context for how I (recently) chose my next path.

I remember seeing an interview with Obama and he was asked something to the effect of "did you always want to be a politician?" He said he didn't really think of it in terms of what he wanted to BE, but rather what he wanted to DO. Do you want to serve others, do you want to be creative, etc. Figure out what you want to do and then figure out how and where you can best do it. That has always stuck with me.
I think this is the best life advice I've ever heard. This is kind or how I've felt about things.

Wow very insightful Hunter as usual. Legend. I always tell myself 'Everything is about perspective and interpretation. In my opinion the goal is to follow a Buddhist type of zen existence-don't let positive news, a positive comment or outside influence make you feel amazing or really up, likewise don't let bad news , a negative comment or other outside stimuli make you feel down. Aim for just being and not let outside stimuli affect your inner state. At times it's not always easy but this for me is the goal and something to aim for. Just existing and being comfortable with it' this mindset came from lockdown I had 18 months of free time , where I tried to think what worked for me, what's important and what the true nature of peace meant to me. You guys might think it's bullshit and that's fine, but it worked for me.

Hunter S Thompson is a legend in my mind, Idc what others think, and I also kinda envy those who had the privillige to call this man his friend. A true Original, or a natural force who refused to be tamed by the bigots of his time. RIP

Awesome advice, I finally found the goal to strive for, that feels like me, that doesn't require me to conform to it. The only problem is it's not exactly what society regards as 'normal'. To go against the tide can cause some tension, and the only way to justify it is by actually becoming succesful. Otherwise you're just a weirdo (that's how it feels anyway, I'd love your take on this topic)
I did try to swim against the tide. Ended up lonely and depressed. Maybe will try again once I am somewhat financially independent ;)
If it's a matter of financial stability in you saying that's the only way to justify your pursuit of it, then I get that. Sometimes you have to carry on a full time job to support yourself to then be able to do the thing you love. But it also sounds like you're worried about what people might think about you doing this thing...Bro, if you genuinely love what it is that you do, don't let yourself let other people take that away from you. Life's too short, man.

Just here to say that Thompon embraced his 'weirdo'. That was what made him unique. He even got into politics and calling his party Freak Power.

I've lived life without any desire for an ultimate goal. I spent a lot of time knowing myself best before trying to know anything outward. I dug into myself, like Thomson, I used LSD, mushrooms, pills, weed, alcohol and cigarettes. The problem with knowing myself so in depth is that I no longer see a benefit in participating with this world. My outward appearance is that of what this physical world of societal constructs would call a loser or a burnout. But as Odin hung himself for 9 days to acquire the Runes, I have done the same, but in a way that is more of a modern version. Is it or was it the right path? Only the future can tell me that, but what waits beyond surely is more appreciative of an open mind.

Nobody knows the path you should take, but they may think they know, and attempt to instruct you. The problem is that their understanding is based solely on their own experiences, and therefore doesn't necessarily have any relevance to your own circumstances. As well-intentioned as it may be, advice presupposes that if something works well for the individual that is giving advice, then it follows that the same course of action should work for you, too. Although I appreciate that kind of concern, the truth is that I need to find my own way, or die trying!

Good ideas and video. I still don't know what to do with my life though. Hunter and Neitzche both ended tragically, but everyone does. Their journey was different than the average person. Rationalising our lives seems futile. Only by doing something are we free from this existential angst.
I think it's a balance. Rationalizing is good for a time, but you definitely can't stay there. Rationalizing and visualizing need to eventually manifest in action...Keep pursuing what compels you, man. You don't have to have a long term plan for your life. Those hardly ever work out anyway.

Most days im bored and just day dreaming about things like moving abroad for a job but i keep getting paralyzed to take action by doubts and uncertainty since i stay in the comfort zone even though i know full well i am completely stuck in life by being there.

Loved this piece! Although I'm a bit hung up on why Thompson says he choses violence. He must mean hunting animals I suppose, I'm sure he was against war and harm to other human beings.
Know Thyself was written above the Oracle at Delphi. Maybe one of the Stoics repeated it but the Oracle predates that school of philosophy, I'm pretty sure.

Thank you for that. They say a stopped clock is right twice a day so I guess that was maybe one of Thompson's time. I absolutely do agree we need to know/feel ourselves to be whole people, unfortunately most of us are brought up to different degrees to not understand who we are and this is passed down from generation to generation. Then this is manifested in our behaviors all sorts of ways healthy and unhealthy.
We're lucky to live in a time where much is known about this and how to raise children who know themselves from parents who were taught by there parents or learned on their own or both. So things like getting all of our needs met according to Maslow. Having healthy attachment to caregivers like attachment theory gives us. Virginia Satir's 5 freedom's like the freedom to feel what you feel and say it, to think what you think and say it etc So we have an opportunity to be our whole self if we are allowed by our caregivers to be our whole self.
There's more to it than this but some broad important strokes that help to create a healthy self. We can't do it alone.
The problem is most of us don't know any of this and are lost souls if we grow up without this so being a whole person is so critical to our individual and society's being healthy.

The bravest die on time, before their time, and to pay a debt. I think HST did all three and he is a moniker of America as a prestine leader in ALL affairs and not just those that swim up to the shores. By killing himself he admitted something very clearly. I never thought cripple could turn on itself. I think he felt he needed to have a bigger family or none at all. That is what it means to be true to a craft.

He was a true "devils advocate" and would sway any opinion the opposite way of which it was directed... (even to his own demise) His own demise would never be the point.. The point would always be, stand and think for yourself, and speak your reasoning if asked why.
