- This week, we explore some easy ways to get some extra speed on our triathlon bikes in the lead-up to Ironman 70.3 World Champs in a couple weeks. First up: bike fits. We visited Craig Upton of Performance Labs in Mill Valley, CA to get our positions on our bikes dialed in and as aero as possible. When racing the half-ironman distance, aero is everything
And, as requested, we walk you through our current bike setups. Hopefully you can glean something useful out of it-feel free to leave any questions about the fits or our bikes below!

Avril Lavigne @10:40 had me ROLLING 😄. Yeah I admit it... I've got some pretty embarrassing stuff on "Pop workout" playlist too.
Coaching and bike fits are great spots to invest that dirty hard earned drug money. Best of luck at St George guys! 🙌
I am so glad you said that you've never had a bike fit. I also have never had one. I also have done it myself and been doing fine so far. I will check back after your St. George race to see if it made a huge difference and if I'm missing out. The $300 cost for a good bike fit has always made me do it myself. They think that we grow money on trees just because we do this sport.
Definitely-bike fits are NOT cheap and are out of reach at full-price for so many triathletes (us included). Luckily there are a lot of online resources + YT videos that can get you 95% of the way there! Hopefully this video + Craig's insights into our bike fits help everyone watching get closer to their optimal positioning ✨
This is super relatable to whole cobbling together of "cheap" but also good gear... Would be interested in a vid about your thoughts about how to go about upgrading, while also recognizing the best upgrade for the average triathlete is just in their legs...
I have started watching your videos I don't why I am started cycling and running you guys are great lots of love to you..
Glad to have you along for the ride!
A bike fit is definitely on my to-do list
great vid!
very cool!
Bike fit was the best money I’ve spent for this sport so far, although the fitter recommended at least 6 weeks between fit and race.
Definitely agree with that! We were cutting it close with our fit (4 weeks out), and luckily didn't have to change too much with our positioning.
This was a great video! Any noticeable changes right away in speed?
Haven't gotten to test in a race yet, but we're definitely feeling more aero and comfortable so it's bound to be good
Great video, as always! Jenna, what saddle do you ride? How did you land on the one you have? Was that talked about during the fit?
I ride on the stock Fizik Mistica saddle for now, but I also came in with concerns about it! Craig was hesitant to change my saddle on fit day because the way it feels under you can change with every other adjustment on the bike. He wanted to ensure it was actually the saddle that was causing problems and not just my fit/positioning making my saddle feel uncomfortable. I’m giving it a few more rides before I decide whether to try different saddles. I hear split nose ISM saddles might be better! Side note: I feel like saddle comfort is a big concern for a lot of women who ride unisex bikes-the default saddles are really not made for our anatomy…
Thank goodness there’s a video… I was starting to get withdrawals.
We're here! We're back! Don't worry!
@@FreestyleTri haha love it!
How much did a pro fit cost (apprx)? Thanks.
Also having an Asian wife with red tint to her hair, I can appreciated the hair absolutely EVERYWHERE. That sh!ts like rope... so strong. BUT also so beautiful. Also love that Red Crown wheel made by my high school teammate. .. Those Diamond bikes are sweet... If you ever upgrade, you should talk to TJ :)
105's for the people!
🙌🙌
Was that guy from New Zealand 🇳🇿? I recognise the accent.
How does your fit feel now? I had some bad experience with a few bike fitters in here and decided to give it a shot at by myself using bikefit app and lots of youtube videos. I came to a point, I can’t do any better. Sharing your experience with Craig would be really nice.
Jenna: my fit didn't change that much-saddle raised about a 10-15mm and pushed back 10-20mm-but I'm feeling much comfortable now. I came in feeling really scrunched up in front, and by moving everything back, it helped my shoulders relax and get more aero. I did drop my saddle a mm after my first indoor workout because it felt a little too high, but otherwise it's been great. Craig emphasized to us that the position in the lab might feel different than when pushing power on a 1hr-3hr long ride and told us it was ok to adjust a mm or two in any direction if things felt off. He also encouraged us to message him with any questions or if something didn't feel right, so I was confident that I would end up with a fit that I was happy with.
@@FreestyleTri thanks so much for sharing your experience. I really appreciate it. Best of luck to both of you at world championship.
just gotta be pro now...
Love me some gold lube!
Our go-to!
i suggest ya'll read some books by actual champions of the sport , how abt scott jurek t start with: eat and run
this is actually gross. Endurance sports like running and biking isnt about geeking out about gear and feeding into materialism ! you guys are failing and straying away from the purity of the sport which is the ecstatic high of a long run or bike ride. when you worry more about "dialing in" your gear and talking abt heart rate after every few minutes , you've lost the essence of what endurance sports is about.
