I return to San Francisco and try some new steep streets with @Ejstrainingcamp and my new friend, Cole. As always, we saved the hardest street for last. I don't know if I'm ready for this one.

Yesss! Thanks for including me in this I had a blast with you! Can’t wait for the next one!
Great riding with you dude! I’m gonna have to start doing a million squats a day or something so I can keep up next time 😂
I just rewatched the first San Francisco video yesterday because I was missing it. Glad to see more of this content back!!!!
Your videos make my day. Thanks for finally editing this 🎉 (took ya long enough 😉)
Thanks for ripping my legs off and introducing me to the worst climb of my life… so far 🫡
Sweet looking Polygon! I almost never see any out in the wild.
It’s awesome to see the progress, beating Cole and EJ in some of this is awesome dude! That’s clearly an “above-average” 😉
I think what really stands out to me in this video besides the wattage output is heart rate comparison. The stronger riders have a noticeably lower HR than Mitch. Kudos to all participants though this looks brutal.
I am so impressed with your channel Mitch. You're living my dream and I'm thankful I get to watch it. Ride safe and be well.
Thank you for watching!
EJ has come a long way since being an overweight film editor. Hats off to him!
MORE STEEP STREETS LETS GO
You should go to Rio, huge bike culture and a ton of incredibly steep paved streets, and some even steeper cobblestone. Lots of incredibly steep streets in Brazil in general.
I did bicycle deliveries during the pandemic. It was horrible. I was going up and down all the very steepest hills, I even had to deliver at the top of Twin Peaks. While I am dying, climbing the hill, I was getting a call from the customer asking why I was taking so long (they were looking at the map and thought I was a car.)
I did so much damage to my self on that particular day that I was essentially bedridden for two weeks afterwards.
And that is why I got an ebike.
Hey, Mitch! We have only 10% to 15% hills here and can't even imagine how to climb these ones you did. The maximum I did myself is 1000 ft 15% climb in 1 minute, but I felt I gonna fall. Your videos are so inspiring. I am not even close match to you in physical condition, but it makes me train more 💪
I liked that you got EJ in on your steep streets ventures.
😊
Great video, its always fun seeing people ride in your backyard. The steep streets are always fun, the most stressful looking climb to me was when you guys are trying navigate around those cable tracks at 11:38, those couldve easily eaten your bikes if not careful!
You're friends with Phil Gaimon and he is (or at least was) sponsored by a GIS company that could potentially tell you exactly the grade of these and other climbs.
Good idea!
Eh gps based grade is kinda wonky still for short steep hills. Just get a grading tool.
Some impressive numbers are being put out here. Thanks for the video Mitch. I am happy I am seeing 400 Watts for a minute on my trainer in the gym.
Recently moved from SF hill top near Broderick to NY. Finally can ride fast flat, but do miss that brutal opportunities to conquer the 20-30% streets to get back home
Thank you, Mitch!
Thanka for including Christmas tree hill. I live on it so I love to see other people trying to climb it. I have also been suggesting this to you for a couple years so I’m glad to see you do it
Yesssss. Welcome back!
Placing a bet on the secret weapon to get up those climbs without putting his foot down: learning wheels.
😂😉
"Laughs in dead man" got me so good! Great efforts in SF!
"This is the worst part." me - It all looked like the worst part. Nice vid.
Amazing video production skills, you got me hooked
I raced San Francisco Grand Prix about 20 years ago. We didn't go up the steepest streets in SF, but many of the climbs were pretty close to it. Filmore was unreal steep, and if you came out of your pedal, race over.
2:01 your friend using polygon 😍😍
this gives good vibes
No way, the mitch boyer EJ Collab is here!!!
I bought my cycling kit Insta360 x4 because of you Mitch, back when you were doign X3 reviews bombing the LA hills. It was time to get my own. Love this series man
That’s awesome! Let me know how it goes, and send me a link to one of your videos once you get the hang of it!
So cool to see you rolling in my hometown.
Im going to hit some of these next week, thanks for the motivation 😈
outstanding video! I love watching videos of my old stomping grounds.....back in the day, 70's-early 80's, we had to do all those climbs in 44x25 (and you were consider a whimp running a 25). Probably why I've had several knee surgeries now that I am an old man. Lived on Broderick right after college. Beautiful place to live. BTW - The Ritte looks amazing!!
I love how they "relax" and "revcover" on 23%
goes to show anyone can have friends, two thumbs up
I ride my average 9-13% grad on a daily basis sometimes 18-22% grad just to challenge myself so i dont know how that feels like cheers to you mate
glad u came back to sf
Congratulations, Tall Seb Vettel!
Curious as to what kind of gearing you’re using. When they first held the old SF Grand Prix, there wasn’t such a thing as compact/subcompact gearing. When the Euros who came over got a first look at the course, their mechanics scoured local bike shops and snapped up all of the largest cassettes they could find.
Love your channel! Keep 'em coming!
Various running groups across SF occasionally will race the cable cars up that Hyde Street Climb and I’ve seen a handful of people actually beat the cable car up!
Ireland is an extremely hilly country there's almost never any flat roads here
11.25...ooo sneaky one there, crossing "the imaginary line first"....
Wow, 3 road riders having a experience about what is to ride on the velodrome 😂 you’re welcome guys ❤ nice video
Love your vids Mitch!!!! ❤❤❤
Also as a recommendation, you should take a trip out to Lake Tohoe. If you do the full Lake Tahoe circuit its ~70 miles with ~5500 ft of climbing but what makes it a real challenge is the starting elevation is ~6500 ft. The Emerald Bay climb is the highlight of route and I think is one of the best views in the country. If you do the whole route it's called "The Most Beautiful Bike Ride in America." If you go and only do one climb, do the Emerald Bay climb, it's incredible. Vegan Cyclist has a really good video on the Tahoe ride.
Go to Madeira off the coast of Portugal! I've heard there's a ton of steep streets there and many of them are quite long
You big stud
Way to dig deep!!! That was awesome!!
Nice to see you came back to the Bay Area to ride more hills. I dread hiking some of those hills so I can't even imagine what it's like riding up them. If you come ever back then I suggest trying the Sneath Ln Trail at Sweeney Ridge in San Bruno. One section of that trail kicks my butt when hiking up it. 😬
If I remember right, I think that trail only max out at around a 17% grade.
Mitch found something different than YT everyone, can't pinpoint it, but hope he makes a billion dollars riding his bike
Thanks Mike! A billion is way too much for me tho haha-I’d be happy just to afford a modest house in LA ✨
Mauna Kea when 🤭🤭 (great work, I couldn't even slowly walk up these lol)
It’s definitely on the list!
You guys should race Cat's Hill. There is a 23% grade hill you get to climb each lap.
I'm surprised that 24th & 25th Streets in San Francisco are not mentioned (between Fountain and Grand View). These should be honorable mention.
Honestly, I thought mitch and EJ looks like brothers from birth.
We are!
Great vid. The other week when I was in SF I did Broadway and tried to do Bradford above Tompkins. Broadway was hard; hard enough to really make one wonder whether you were going to make it, but not necessarily as hard as you may go sprinting in a race when you're really motivated. For me, Bradford was impossible. The top and bottom were no real problem, but that middle section of 41% or whatever was impossible in my current state. I'll give it a go with a 34 at the back next time I'm in SF to see the grandkids.
Bradford is crazy steep. It requires a crazy amount of power just to get up 🤯
Cannot imagine what it's like during rainy season
Your max HR must be in the mid/hi 190s. I can't imagine continuing that last climb pumping at 190+. Well done!
Highest this season was 207. I pretty regularly surpass 200, but I was pretty overtrained at the time of that last climb so my HR was clamped a bit 😵
I once road 37 miles and part of the ride involves a 6-8% grade. I know that this might be nothing for some people but I kept pushing and only stopped when my legs actually gave out from cramping.
This is so much fun to watch. I love hills. Not mad on racing them though that makes me feel sick. f just getting up is the issue . Get a tiny gear maybe?
Bahaha….we did that in 1987 when we went up there to watch the Coors Classic and saw Lemond put a beating on Hinault.
Awesome video guys!
you need to go to laguna beach, some insane streets there
Crazy to see you fly to Milan (my hometown i'm italian)!! You'll have to do a series on the legendary european mountain passes of the giro and tour de france someday (doing the stelvio myself on sunday)
It’s been a great trip, Milan is very cool! I have a few big climb videos that will be released over the next few months (including Stelvio!). Enjoy your ride this weekend!
If you're back up here, take a little sortie to the east Bay, we have a couple of famous climbs (namely Marin Ave).
Cool vid. Xmas is a mile from me and an absolute beast. Made Muro di Sormano feel easy. Well not really
"streets existed long before cars"
yeah most people don't know that roads were initially created for bikes. great content btw
Nice, looks fun. Should make a hill climb event doing these. 😎
I go up summit drive a lot for mountain biking, usually on my bike but i've gone in a car before and at one point the tires slipped out and we had to bike the rest of the way, scary stuff.
I'd love to see you take on Hardknott Pass in The Lake District, UK. It's "only" a 33% gradient, but has multiple hair-pin bends. The road was originally built in 110AD by the Roman Empire.
It's on my list! I was gonna go this year, but then I got an invite to follow Visma Lease a Bike at the Tour, so I had to push it back
The steepest street I've ever found was a tiny road leading north out of Sigriswil above lake Thun in Switzerland. The average gradient of the 300m segment is 29%, but that includes a less steep part at the top. At the bottom it is around 38% I think. I couldn't walk down, had to walk down the field next to it.
The camera man ftw
Great video! I’m dying to know if the hill suggested by one of the construction workers recommended was Main St. in Cork city or Windmill Hill in Youghal?
You should check out some of the mountain neighborhood streets we have here in Honolulu next
as a san francisco biker, i just walk up all of these hills
Try Carrer Oslo in Cunit (near Barcelona). CRAZY! I don't like it.Even though I have done it. It's probably nothing for you guys though. Have you done the Scanuppia in Italy?
LOL, I used to live on Christmas Tree Hill. I would ride home from SF and had to climb this just to get home. Not FUN. Luckily I didn't have to ride to the top. :)
I would DIE 😂
cant wait for the europe videos : )
In 1972 I lived very close to Christmas tree hill. I road that climb with my training partner Berry Alen quite a few times. We both ran 13 - 21 six speed cogs and 42 53 front rings. I kid you not.. in 1973 I was second in the tour of Nevada City.
You were a beast!! 💪
Did you get a chance to try Dalewood way? Not the steepest hill by far, but its quite a challenge to bike up.
Try Taylor St from Pine St going up to California St. and ,, Church St / 21st or 22nd street
I know a road in North Carolina called Globe Road. It is by a small town called Blowing Rock. You gain over 2000ft in elevation over the course of 4.2 miles on a gravel road. I’ve done it a few times and I definitely think anyone who can should give it a go.
Come to okinawa, alot of steep hills. Some even have speed bumps for pedestrian incase you cant stop walking down it. There like a hand rail side ways you have to shuffle through.
this is sick
Bravo!
W vid, yessir
You have to ride bicycle on road with cars in USA? Here in Netherlands we have seperate roads. Interesting stuff
Крутое видео, чувак
Maybe if you use the 20 inch wheels bicycle with the 8 speed gears on 1st gear ⚙️
(The largest size gear)
That’s might be much easier to climb 😅
daaamn yall are jacked!!
Come down to Los Gatos, take a spin up Teresita Way. It's delightful.
Teresita + Blackberry Hill! Blackberry Hill hurts! I'm proud of getting up without stopping haha... maybe I'll try it again
@@renakao8305 That is something I'm not sure I'll ever be able to do. That hill is so steep, and I have a 34x34.
@@tysonkampbjj I did it on my Giant Contend 3, which is aluminum! The gears are good for climbing though. I'm sure others with a carbon bike can do it. I thought Blackberry Hill was harder than Welch Creek and Bohlman On Orbit, but easier than Hicks North + Umunhum. I'm scared of this Christmas Tree Hill haha... maybe I'll try it someday
Have you done Bohlman On Orbit or Hicks (north) Mt Um? They're kind of my home climbs since I live half way in between in Los Gatos.
I walked that 36% street on my SF vacation with my dog and no prior knowledge as to what I was getting into. Just a complete surprise 😂😭
They sneak up on ya!
You should visit Rwanda, aka " The land of a thousand hills".
Fun fact: My name's also Ejay.😁 Solomon Ejay
I'd be happy to provide more context. Lemme know if you're interested.👍
that attaquer long sleeve looks sick
It’s one of my favorites!
Surprised your bike wasn’t stolen bro.
you do amzing climbing and your friends too. What sizes chairings and cassette size you used.
Great video, except the area of a sphere= 4π steradians, which is approximately 41,253 square degrees. So the camera should be the "Insta 41,253" (not 360).
On climbs this steep you can get a very nice estimate of gradient by using power. Assume a coefficient of rolling resistance of around 0.5% (this adds to the effective grade). So:
x = power / (weight x speed) - 0.5%
But then this needs to be adjusted to get gradient, due to the definition of gradient:
gradient = x / sqrt(1 - x²)
where weight = Mg (mass in kg, g = 9.81 m/s²), including the bike and clothing and water and the camera, etc.
if im not wrong, elevation gain is usually from barometric altimeter, which is more accurate than GPS, though still gets wonky with these steep climbs esp when you slow down... anyway, anything in the 20s is already brutal for me.. 30s and above is for entertainment, when watching someone else do it 😂
that’s the best description of 20-30% I’ve heard 😂
4:16 the public like when they see a cyclist suffering
😂😂
I didn't know Fillmore was so difficult XD. I've ridden up and down it many times, and it doesn't really compare (at least for me) to something like 14th or 15th street up to the Randall Museum (probably because when I get to 14th/15th it's usually the end of my ride).
It’s not crazy steep, but if you race up it, it’s long enough to hurt 😂
I'm an old guy now but I used to do these 3 block long 30% grades with a 27 tooth rear and a 39 front on a 2001 Schwinn aluminum bike. What gear ratio are you guys using?
Ej's heart rate is insane. Whilst you guys were doing zone 3-4 HR, he was doing zone 2
No. He just has a lower max heart rate so his zones are different. He was still in zone 3-4 when they were as well.
@@roadcyclist1 how is that possible
@@notgamaliel I am not sure what you are confused about. Everyone has their own max heart rate. Heart rate zones are defined based on your max heart rate.
You must be in Europe right now with Cam. Enjoy the TdF mate. Leave the videos for later! 👍
