    In 15:49 I have a different perspective. In Chinese culture, because we tend to be more reserved and indirect when expressing our feelings, we have developed a wider range of words to convey emotions. It depends on the individual’s choice of words and whether they are precise enough, but in Chinese or Japanese culture, we often consider not being too direct as a way to communicate thoughtfully, even if it sometimes means sacrificing a bit of accuracy.

      I totally agree with you! She find it easier to express herself in English simply because she has learned more English vocabulary and much less Mandarin vocabulary. It is not because Mandarin language has less vocabulary in emotional expression or Chinese culture is passive and unexpressive. Her understanding is simply too shallow. She is entitle to her opinion, but her statements can mislead other people to misunderstand the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. In terms of Taiwanese (Chinese culture) tends to be reserved, passive, and "too polite" in communication; it is just a stereotype from her own personal experience in Taiwan. It is just like of like saying Americans are loud and rude. Or saying Germans are rigid and cold, which is untrue. Stereotype is a generalization which lacks accuracy and truth. Someone who has been traveling and living in so many different countries and cultures, shouldn't have this kind of narrow perspective. While she is brilliant in learning different languages, it is very disappointing to hear her express the way she did. Knowing how to operate the mechanics of languages, does not mean she has the depth in effective communication.

    As someone who speaks both English and Mandarin (among 2 other languages), I disagree on her comment about the lack of Chinese vocabulary to describe one's emotions. The beauty of the Chinese language lies in the fact that there's actually many ways to express one's feelings, unless you are lacking fluency in it. You can even use poetry to express it. Chinese also succinctly describes something in a visual way, eg. 鸟语花香, try creating the visual image in the same way with an english expression. An analogy to this is how the same type of every meat in Chinese cuisine can be prepared in multiple ways, eg, grilled, steamed, bbq, stir fried, etc.

    I feel like what she said is a bit weird and misleading. First, how could she claim she'd learned Mandarin in six months when she actually didn't know any characters at that time? And I guess neither did she master the tones. Second, it's so embarrassing that she said there's no such words as hurt, uncomfortable and ashamed in Chinese to express feelings after learning Chinese for more than 10 years. I mean, there's a lot and all you need is a dictionany. Can't believe what I heard. Just because people don't express their feelings quite often or you are not aware of the phrases, doesn't mean there're no such words. Be humble and modest please.
    Also you can never say you master oral Mandarin unless you get the tones right, at least 90% of them.
    For those who are learning Chinese or any other languages, don't be misled by this. You've got a long way to go and be well prepared.

    • @HaPhung-h4g
      @HaPhung-h4g 3 месяца назад

      Totally agree! As a Vietnamese- Chinese i would say she doesn't not master the tones at all haha it's easy to recognize when she said some simple phrases like hello, goodbye in my mother tongue. It sounds funny like all the white guys, who struggle to master the tones. Even as a native speaker, i don't dare to claim that i can master it. Her tone when she said "ni hao" reminds me all the times i got racism in Germany :)) all random stupid racists have the same tone :)). Sorry, but to be a polyglot you have a long journey to chase, don't mislead :)) Learn how to be humble is also import :))

    • @吳維儂
      @吳維儂 3 месяца назад +8

      I think she's adopted the technique hyperbole in that regard. Using the word "master" is really an overstatement because I've learned English over the past 30 years and I don't even claim to have mastered this foreign language even though I'm already quite fluent in it as a non-native speaker. I live and breathe it day in day out..

    說什麼六個月學一個語言真的不要太唬爛,為了收視率亂寫。六個月頂多只到可以旅遊的程度,假設不是在當地國家有沈浸式學習,聽跟說只會更慘。六個月只有學習外語而沒有其他事情,我相信可以到初階的程度,但要到business level就太唬爛了。
    我個人花半年在下班時間學習,通過德語A2,在學生時期(非日文系)花一年通過日檢N1,我只能說我還是不熟這兩個語言,必須要在聽說讀寫持續學習

    • @maomeowcat
      @maomeowcat 2 месяца назад +11

      在我的認知裡,只要一個人覺得自己會說一種語言,那他就是會那種語言,毫無疑問。無關初階、中階、高階。語言最基本的目的就是拿來溝通的,能溝通就行了。你指的“不熟”,我會理解為“不專精”,對一個語言到專精的程度,也有其目的,譬如日語,很多人說,即使你考到N1也不一定能在日本生活,重點是你考到N1要做什麼?興趣、留學、求職、移民?喜歡一個語言,單純去喜歡他就好,享受與人溝通的瞬間。
      我跟中文認識那麼久,也不覺得我跟中文很熟啊!但我誠實說,我會中文啊!所以我專精中文要做什麼?好跟更多人說話嗎?你去看YT上教中文的影片,很多句子根本就不是我們的日常對話。這部分我倒覺得雪兒說得很好。無所畏懼的去聽、去說,無所畏懼的讓自己去練習聽跟說,這是我學語言到現在最大的感受。
      但你說中了一件這部影片我也不欣賞的事:標題-語言學習秘訣大公開。標題下得很驚人,說穿了答案只有一句「每個人的學習方式不同,沒有一種學習方式適用每個人。」即使我看了那麼多這類型的影片,還是忍不住會點來看,看完也頗生氣的。好好學一個自己喜歡的語言吧!按照自己的節奏!至少我學英文和日文是因為一個實用、一個聽起來很幸福💕。

      漢語,這麼博大精深,浩浩蕩蕩,歷史悠久的語言,不可能六個月就掌握好。我個人覺得,好多polygot在吹牛。 當然,學習外語,打開了一扇國際的門,可以與來自不同文化的說不同語言的人交流,這是非常好的一件事。 說六個月,應該是路上日常生活溝通可以很不錯,但是叫他們聽懂新聞,或對話中進行一些比較複雜的話題,不太行。不過她還說她在台灣住了10年,事實說6個月只學漢語到現在已經不太準確了。 她也沒有傷害別人,她只是很熱情,但同時我不喜歡吹牛的視頻標題跟自以為是的態度。

      我以前英文老師說過,至少先找你同等程度的內容才學。成功感會更高之餘會令你提高學習興趣。我不能說六個月應令人可變為流利,但至少基本溝通已可以做到,其他的如可能表達一些東西或情景時真係要好長時間才可達成目標。不過講者有點是對的,就算普遍亞洲人包括我以前也很怕錯所以不太敢溝。但令我轉變的是因我現在在英國生活後,雖然未必完完全全達到流利。但不停錯誤不停當試(try and error) 的確會令你進步很多。

While you are brilliant in learning different languages, it is very disappointing to hear you express the way you did.
