Diane's laugh was a character on it's own. I loved the deep laugh, like in this clip, but also the flippant laugh that she suggested on others when she thought herself amusing. The wispy, ha ha ha ha.. Shelly Long was truly a gem on this show.
@@fowchiiiliedpuppiesdiedNot really seeing how it’s heartbreaking. It’s just funny because it’s true. Diane may mean well, but she’s a little too full of herself to the point where she sees things as she wants them to be, not as they are.
@@creamykev shut up! where do you get off coming here decades later to claim such hateful bullshit. “Oh look at me I quit watching Cheers!” She was a fictional character. You’re fkn real and your comment alone reeks of self pretentious crap.
Diane was truly one of the greatest TV characters ever. You could both relate WITH her and laugh AT her several times in one scene. The fact that the series was still great after Long left is a credit to the writers, and the other amazing cast members: Harrelson, Grammer and later, Nuewirth.
So agree, Robert. Watched Cheers sporadically after she left and and am appreciating Seasons 6-11 more now in reruns. I get such a kick out of the whole Diane vs. Rebecca rivalry. No one is wrong as they describe each characters' flaws. What the writers fleshed out so well with the Sam/Diane dynamic was each character's navigating of their id, ego and super ego. Sam, mostly "id"; Diane, mostly "super ego." Both with egos trying to mediate the two within themselves and with each other. Does that make sense? All I know is that the hilarity that ensued still enthralls me. Really remarkable how the trajectory of the show during the Diane Era was mapped out in this illuminating scene. Kudos also to the casting director(s) of Cheers who always found fantastic actors for great bits like the one in this video.
It practically goes without saying that this show had a spark of brilliance from its very first episode. Aside from that . . . my goodness, Shelley Long was an absolute doll baby back then. Love her hair here, particularly in the second scene, where she pontificates to the foreign couple. Such an adorable gal.
Many credit Diane's character leaving with giving the show extra legs as it shook things up. I think they're correct. I look at TBBT and man, they should have pulled the plug after season 7...
@Michael Richmond Jr it actually didn't, the show went to number 1 but the ratings never increased if you check, it is just the year it went to number 1 it had less competition.
Mary Tyler Moore really was the Gold Standard which production companies imitated. Key was hiring good actors & writers who grew the story line guided by solid directing. With a competent producer, a network would air years of success. Key was establishing a hub or straight man character. Cheers took the baton.
Nah, it was one of those old school droll American 'comedy's' with an overzealous laugh even if someone simply said 'hello. Got a bit more watchable when Diane left, but still not super funny.
Psychologists may say that the place they conduct their sessions with their patients is a safe space and some of them- the good ones- may mean it too, but for me that bar was a safe space . Aside from the phenomenal romance Diane and Sam shared and I do not care that James Barrows describes their relationship as dysfanctional aside from the fact that Long wanted out after 5 years- this bar was the safest place I have seen. You were accepted there. And that feeling was something even more than the feeling you get from your family.
Love how Diane's face slowly falls as she recites Carla's order verbatim..like "oh, no...". I didn't like Diane at times, but I would agree Long had excellent comedic timing, and you can see everything working from the 1st episode...imagine that this almost got cancelled after the first season...that still blows my mind...
Shelly Long was so cute..Though I thought she looked her cutest when her hair was in a bun (in the convent when she tells sam she is sorry about Coach's death). And even in the hair towel and face cream when Sam proposes over the phone. Cheers lost its heart with the death of Nick Colasanto. It lost its Bostonian persona and chemistry when Shelly left. Somewhere along the way, each character became meaner and more of a doofus. Just look at Cliff's arc over the seasons. I always like to think at the final episode, when Sam says the "Bar is closed", they should have had it be known during the outside shot by an obvious silhouette, that it was Diane coming back.
@@shanefolan I stopped watching Cheers religiously after Shelley Long left. Did Sam ever seriously fall in love with anyone else over the next 6 seasons? In the end, I know the writers determined the bar was the true love of Sam's life, but was Diane the only one who nudged him beyond lust?
@@lnl3237 Pretty much yes, I too did not watch religiously after long left but yes after season six they never took Sam's character in that deep direction again where he was so committed to a woman as they didn't want to just repeat the format and wanted to take the show in a new direction. So yes Diane was the love of his life when it comes to all his women. From season six Sam was rejuvenated again so that he was more about bouncing from one women to the next and he had something with Rebecca but it was far from the level it was with Diane. The writers had pretty much ran out of ideas for him by the end though and wanted to keep him as a lady's man but danson said in interviews this was one of the major reasons why he left as by the end danson and Sam was in his mid 40s and he thought it was sad and cringy for Sam to be still acting like a young sports jock lothario in middle age and chasing women now young enough to be his daughter. The plan for season 12 was for him to become like he was in season one again but danson refused as he said that at Sam's age such behaviour was more pathetic, sad and creepy rather than being cool and admirable.
what is quite interesting i think here is how much better shelley long gets as the show progresses than here in her early days- much more glamorous, groomed and generally hotter looking. I always wondered was it because of her fame and wealth from the show's success which means she had more stylists/cash etc at her side or was it because she was supposed to be the femme fatale pretty girl in the show that we had from season 2 onwards. She evolved from pretty average looking to pretty hot.
