When this program started, I had a neighbor without a TV who would hear the laughter from our apartment. Thursday night became her night to visit. What a great show.
"On behalf of the intelligent women around the world" is one of my favorite Diane lines ever lol

The relationship between Sam and Diane was easily the best part of Cheers. Comedy of the highest order!

Before Cheers, Shelley did commercials for a furniture store near Chicago called "Homemakers". She also did a Chicago show called "Sorting it out". I thought she was soooo cute!

I’d been meaning to watch these clips for awhile now, because despite being very young, I too felt the sting of Shelley’s exit from the show! I loved she and Ted’s banter, and I just think she’s hilarious! Although, had she never left Cheers, she never would’ve made Hello Again or Outrageous Fortune.

Julia Duffy was considered for the role of Diane. Shelly Long was perfect, sad she left early.

It was quite good for a few seasons but then it devolved into a show with one-dimensional, puerile characters and rim-shot humor.

Diane left some big shoes to fill but Rebecca was terrific also. The character Diane was brilliant! Big pun, lol.

Does anyone remember the episode where Diane and Sam were in an apartment and Diane threw the spaghetti or salad in frustration? I recall watching that back in the 80's and just dying with laughter!!!! Cheers just wasn't the same after Diane Chambers left.

For me, She WAS Cheers. While she was there it was a classic, once she left, it became a very good comedy show having built up a huge fan base by then but it was no longer a classic

@@Brandon-lw1wx Well you can have the best writing, best comedy but that doesn't guarantee that you won't lose to a ordinary show - we see movies of today's times in that - men & women in tights beating up bad guys - same stupid story recycled over and over & people, like sheep, rewarding these movies

Time will tell - I bet that going forward, the episodes of Shelly Long will be more in demand than the later shows with Kirstie

"Diane" was a hard act to follow when she left. And it wasn't (not even close in my opinion). However, the consistent quality of the writing and the established cast carried it through.
She was better than Sam, as a person and a character.
The show finally hit number one in the ratings in the later seasons.
I like that in the Diane years Sam was the boss of Cheers. But in the Kirstie years she was the boss of Cheers 🍻 👍 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nah just cant watch Cheers after Diane leaves. Her character was so integral. Tbh though I wasnt a huge fan of Season 5 they wrote Diane poorly on purpose as they knew Shelley was leaving.

That is nonsense fan fiction. She resigned half way through season 5 in December 86 so considering much of the episodes were broadcast or written by then it proves it isn't so. It is more likely that the writers had exhausted the Diane/Sam plot by season 5 so it was beginning to crack.
@@shanefolan No Shelley said she told them she'd be leaving during production of Season 4 as that's when Ted extended his contract to six years but Shelley didnt as they knew she planned to leave when her 5 year contract expired as she'd signed a movie deal with Disney.

I can assure you that Shelley said she told them during Season 4 so they had a lot of time to prepare for the direction they were going in without her. They were auditioning actresses for Rebecca during production of Season 5.
Kirstie was good, and some of the episodes she was in were good, but something happened writing wise.

they would have if it weren't for the surrounding people encouraging cheating, insulting one to the other, culture of yuckiness, etc. the attitude of people surrounding the couple affects the relationship
it wouldn’t have been as funny.

When the Burrows discussed how Danson and Long worked off each other and how it was instant that they were the ones shows how smart they were casting the show. Danson beat out Fred Dryer and William Devane
I dont now if this show would have lasted as long with Diane . The old, 'Sam chases Diane . Diane rebuffs him '. theory ,Add infinite was wearing thin.
Seven or eights seasons tops. But I think I might have enjoyed that more because it was a comedy; it should end with something happy like their wedding or a baby.

I hated both leads characters. But Diane was the more bearable woman on the show. I hated Kirstie alleys character. She was just a shallow gold digger. Found them both annoying but at least Shelly wasn't nearly as shallow..
