Thank you so much for this! I am Cheers biggest fan! I keep this clip on my phone, among several clips, to show people how wonderful this sitcom is, but I can never send it to anyone because the file is too large. Now I can send it to anyone! This is a perfect blend of brilliant writing and impeccable comedic timing. "Gentleman's Quarterly" magazine recently declared Cheers "the greatest sitcom that's ever been," and I couldn't agree more - especially the first five years with Shelley Long!
You sure sound like Cheers' biggest fan! I'm right behind you and also have a preference for the first five seasons. Seeing Sam and Diane's "intra" and "inter"personal conflicts was so entertaining. Sam's id and Diane's superego made for some very witty and sophisticated exchanges.
@lnl3237 Boy, are you right about that! This clip is a prime example of the brilliance of "Cheers"! I was crying I was laughing so hard the first time I saw this, 🤣 😆 😂 especially when Diane says she likes to get a half hour of it in before breakfast and that she'd be happy to teach him how to do it! 🤣 I have the first five seasons (the Diane Chambers' episodes) on DVD. I watch one or two a night. I never get tired of them. The writing is intelligent and the cast brilliant! As far as I'm concerned, it is the funniest sitcom that's "ever been"---as "Gentleman's Quarterly" put it! Not counting this episode, I don't think there was ever a greater moment in any sitcom than when Sam and Diane break up! It goes from farce---pinching each other's nose on the floor and Diane saying, "This is the lowest we've ever gotten, Sam! There is no humiliation left!" to the melodramatic scene of Sam ordering her out of the bar. When Sam says, "You heard me! I want you out! Get out of this bar!" I had never heard him use that tone of voice before with anyone on the show. It was chilling! And, to think, just seconds before they had been in this crazy slapstick gag on the floor pinching each other's nose with each yelling, "Let go! No, you let go! No, you let go first!" (lol) It's just a brilliant, brilliant show all around---especially the first five seasons! I even wrote a letter to Shelley Long telling her that Diane was the reason I went back to college to complete my degree. Diane had been an English major as I was. I told her that hearing Diane's beautiful use of the English language every week made me want to complete my degree and that, ironically, I wound up teaching English at a college. I told her this would not have happened had it not been for Diane, but then I lost my nerve and did not send the letter. I think it's safe to say I am "Cheers" biggest fan, or at least one of the millions of "Cheers" biggest fans!
@@dennishalford5763 Gosh, Dennis, you WERE a regular at Cheers! Think Ms. Long would've enjoyed that letter. Wasn't there an episode when Diane was horrified that Sam's niece didn't want to go to college? Having been an English teacher, it's no wonder you were so impressed with the writing. Diane and then later, Frasier, gave the writers an opportunity to show off their "esoteric chops!" Don't get Paramount Plus, but am rooting for the Frasier reboot. Secretly hoping they'll be a mention that Diane and Sam found each other once again and forever. For me, the final image of Sam and Diane dancing to "What'll I Do" as an elderly couple in Sam's daydream is the most satisfying end to what some-including the Charles brothers and James Burrows-might describe as their deliciously dysfunctional relationship. I thought of them more as just terribly incompatible, but still wanting the other to be happy. Loved when Sam tried to read "War in Peace" in a few days so he could hold his own with Sumner or when Diane spent $200 on tickets for some boxing match for Sam. "Cheers" may not be Shakespeare, but it sure qualifies as a timeless classic that every generation will discover anew.
@@lnl3237 LOVED the "War and Peace" episode, especially when Sumner says to Sam, "Please! I did a workshop on that novel for years, and I've sworn I'll never discuss it again!" lol At the end of the episode, though, poor Sam gets his reward. He asks Diane why she is choosing him over Sumner when Sumner's so brilliant. She tells him, "You read 'War and Peace' for me. He didn't." Then, she mentions the movie, and Sam says, "There was a movie!" lol He was so upset when he realized he could have just watched the movie instead of suffering through 1200 pages of difficult reading. lol I'm wondering if the "Frasier" reboot will ever actually happen.
Yeah I didn't start watching Cheers until the 8th season in 1989. The improbable dream episode. I remember it so well because Sam had a dream that Rebecca took her face off hahahahaha!
From what I hear, the reason she didn't get a lot of roles after Cheers is because she was very difficult to work with when she wasn't in front of a live studio audience. She wanted to redo shots over and over again until they were perfect, and didn't always have a good working attitude.
@@Eisenbison meh i'd say it was more than that, she was near 40 by the time she left which is when it becomes harder for women to get roles.....younger/more bankable actresses of the time like meg ryan, kathleen turner ,jodie foster, julia roberts, michelle pfeiffer and demi moore were who producers were looking at to hire..... Thank you! I finished the series for the first time yesterday and I still can't get over it. I'm sure looking forward to watch this episode even more now; I never want to stop watching this show!
Yeah, I agree. :) Though there can be a lot of pretty ordinary TV-episodes, there's undeniable brilliance scattered throughout the series. I couldn't watch it all; but I could probably watch any episode and enjoy it.
Cheers outsmarted most of the sitcoms I've seen. I still enjoy them but Cheers humour is brilliant, as you said. I strongly recommend you see the end and then tell me what you think!
Haha, The great reveal was the continued facial tic despite the meditation. Might want to try the sex. lol. Hope that helps your case study. Mediation has it's purpose if done properly. Sex has a much lower standard for success than meditation. lol
One of the very best ensemble comedies of all time. You can't give up on humanity if it can produce this.

@@dennishalford5763 Thanks for fleshing out more of that episode. Poor Sam...being Diane's boyfriend was exhausting!
The first time I saw Cheers, it had been on TV for a while. I laughed until I cried.
Its on Netflix..... check out: S6 E14... HILARIOUS!

They brought back Diane’s twitch for Frasier a decade later.
"he just makes jokes" i can't breath xD

The Money Pit.
No one deserves work...
How kind of you to retroactively take an interest in Shelley Long's career.

Still hilarious after all these years. Great writing.
Way to go Shooter McGavin!
After that beer Shooter was pulled over and went to jail. His mugshot is online.
Lol "sometimes people even join in"
This scene is awesome! 😂😂😂😂
Poor Diane!
Shooter McGavin!
Mark grace the former cubs first baseman had the term “ slump buster “. It was exactly this and I don’t mean meditation.
"I figure I'm busting HER slump and shes bustin mine" - M.Grace
The man is an absolute legend
One of my favorite shows
When I first saw this I couldn’t stop laughing
Every time Diane said something about meditation someone should have shouted
“THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID”
That's Shooter MaGavin....Headed to Sam's office
to score
Who the hell is Shooter McGavin?
I'd be happy to teach you. 😁🤣😂
Mark Grace would suggest the biggest, gnarliest slumpbuster he can find.
Exquisite!
This episode clearly written by Jack, Chrissy and Janet
That's an insult to Cheers.
Afternoon,Everybody.
Norm Peterson NOOOORRM!!
Norm!
Diane - “Norman..
NORM!
How's life treating you Norm?
Can you tell me which episode this is? I'd like to watch it again and I cannot find a quote anywhere!
It is from Season 1, Episode 10. "Endless Slumper". One of the very best episodes imo, right behind in my mind the return of Sloane in season 2...

Hello Everyone.

Shooter Mc
hey
She would be arrested for assault for slapping him now days.
em..no you mean the other way around
Who else but Quagmi ... I mean, Sam.
How loudly would the SJWs scream about "men taking advantage of a woman" if this episode were released today?
Frankly they should. It was entirely funny to let her make a fool of herself for a while. It was morally wrong to let her go into the backroom.
If they are hanging around outside after the games? They are like groupies who prefer jocks to rockstars.
Who was taking advantage of who though? Diane offered it to him on a plate[in his perception];that's hardly taking advantage.
Teasing moral transgressions is still quite comedic.
It wouldn't happen in the first place because network TV is dead. Nothing but rehashes and reboots. The only originality is on cable.
