- Throughout my 30-year career covering sports, I have encountered numerous individuals in the sports media world. From my days at the Ann Arbor News to ESPN and Fox Sports, I have always held my own in the face of conflict with others. In this series, I will showcase 50 of my own personal sports media beefs I've had over the years. Who do you think would be ranked #1?

I remember when Albom got installed as a local treasure. We didn't have much that anyone else in the country wanted, so it was cool to see Mitch on national TV. But then came the evolution: columns that were empty exercises in style, followed by columns about him, and finally columns lecturing about the problems that we were too dumb or insensitive to understand.
And that's why Mitch got rich because people bought what he was peddling like the villagers buying a quack's gimmick medicine he's selling from his cart to swindle them.
Thank you for this, Albom feminized the sports section.
Whitlock sure has a lot of beefs for someone who's such a devout Christian!

I remember always seeing Mitch (Myth) Album on Sunday morning sports reporters back in the 90s “great show btw” RIP Dick Schaap/John Saunders. Also remember Mike Lupica was always on as well, which I’m sure Jason has Lupica on the beef list as well.

Who can forget those ears. I just remember that they looked like a ferengi's from Star Trek. The "sappy" is true and it seemed like he wanted to write about things not sports related more.
Mitch Albom wrote an article leading up to Super Bowl XIX calling Joe Montana a wimp! What an idiot. 😅
Chris Webber went to Detroit Country Day School for high school, about the most expensive private school in the Detroit area.
Wasn’t it amazing how much talent in all sports Country Day had…..and back then they were a class C or D (I think D…the smallest possible class there was) I’m sure they were just lucky

Mitch Albom is a high achiever like him or not , I don’t argue with success as long as it’s legal, and I’m not a fan.
I remember when news broke that Cam Newton's dad took money from Auburn😮 they denied it ESPN tried to interview Cam that day but all they got was a video of him leaving practice in a brand new Nissan Z running a red light but nobody mentions where he got a $50,000 car while reporters for days said there was no evidence of any bribery LOL😅

Born and raised in Detroit. I remember Mitch completely. Maybe what was needed in those days. Unfortunately, also early stages of disingenuous reporting.

Nothing against you Whitlock, but most sports writers are worthless. They do stories about adults playing kids games and try to find something interesting about the athlete. When they can't find anything interesting they:
1) Make $h!t up AKA fake news
2) Sensationalize a true story
3) Get into something personal that has nothing to do with sports.
And it's not just the writers. The editors /people in charge encourage their staff to engage in this crap.

I enjoy your work, here it comes, BUT, why were you not reporting on all the illegal gifts being received by these and other college athletes?
Because everybody already knew for decades go look up the video of Cam Newton the day that the news broke his dad took 10 grand from Auburn... cam released a statement saying how poor he was then ESPN show the video that evening of Cam leaving practice in a brand new Nissan Z he then ran a red light in it on the video and nobody to this day has ever mentioned where he got $50,000 car😂 and I just laughed as the days went by and all these reporters kept saying well we have no evidence

Chris Webber’s mother was a schoolteacher and his father worked at the GM Clark street plant. There are some very interesting stories about his father’s side gig in the plant also.

Mitch Albom: Sweet and Sappy. About the opposite of Mike Downey, a much better writer who Albom replaced at the Free Press. (And who I just found out died a few weeks ago.)
I remember his "Downey does Detroit" columns. A much better writer than Mitch.

I enjoyed Mitch, as I did Jason, on The Sports Reporters.
Always felt the same way, Mr. Whitlock! So bland ... so meh ... Never put his spirit into writing. I want some kind of vigor in my writers.
I hope someone puts Whitlock back on TV, i loved Speak for Yourself when he was on, can’t even watch it anymore.

I used to watch Mitch on "The Sports Reporters", and be fascinated by his ears. He always had this weird haircut that would cover most of them, but you could see from the hair being pushed out, that the man's ears went almost all the way up his skull lol. Id always laugh because he thought he was being slick with that hairdo.
Id bet good money he still has that hairdo decades later.

I lasted 1:11 into the video and had to end it, can't stand the background music. This hip hop themed nonsense has infected all of society and I'm beyond sick of hearing it. It's in every sports arena, nearly every commercial, movie, TV show, video game, and countless videos on this platform as the default background sound.
Nope. No more. Call me old fashioned, whatever you want, but Jason needs to be better than this.

I loved Mitch Albom in the Sports Reporters on espn back in the day. He was by far the best one of the group. What he said about CWebb is nauseating and I’m sure you’re right about it. Nevertheless I don’t have a problem with him. I like you too Whitlock.

What’s hilarious is…I actually read his book when I was younger (why? I have no idea, moms had it and I just, read it lol). What was it called? 5 ppl you meet in heaven ? Something like that…nothing special about it however. I don’t even remember its contents.

I hate writers/actors who are sentimentalists and wishful thinkers. They spend all their time and energy wishing things were different, rather than focusing on what is, and how to make things better. It's sappy, naive and calculated behavior, in order to put themselves in a better light.

I’m curious. That’s always seems to be Jason’s go to narrative if he disagrees or dislikes someone is “ they’re inauthentic, they don’t believe what they say/write. Where’s the proof? Well, clearly, Mitch cut corners and got away with it. He didn't fight back with some gaslighting, and Trump-style histrionics where the loudest most obnoxious voice wins. Unlike Steven A. The more I learn about the Myth, the more it bothers me, the love that he gets, and the hate that Skip Bayless gets. I dislike both, and Dan LeBatard was right about what they did to sports journalism. I especially dislike when Charles Barkley talks about wanting to kill Skip, but he and has got nothing for Steven A. Steven A. could have just done a Mitch Album and count his millions and kept it moving, but he wanted to double down and show his feminine side. In my eyes, he is worse than Skip Bayless.
