The song Sheraton Commander makes a whole lot more sense when you learn that it's the name of a hotel on the Harvard campus. There's apparently a tree on the property upon where a plaque commemorates some important event where George Washington stood there at some point at the outset of the Revolutionary War. So lyrically, Rivers recalls this place, but upon going back there today, it doesn't feel the same as when he walked those streets in his younger years.
I’m one of the rare Weezer fans that digs everything they put out, some more then others. These 4 SZNZ albums ranks right up there with some of the best stuff they’ve done
A new Weezer EP that was this good was the ultimate Christmas present for me! Especially since Rivers devoted a whole song to my species, proving that he hasn’t forgotten about what I’ve done to bolster his career. You can hate all you want, but where’s YOUR album cover? That’s right, I’ll forever be an icon. Anyways, The Head from SZNZ has definitely perfected his craft by now, because this EP is what I’ve wanted from Weezer since even before their 2009 magnum opus Raditude. Keep it Weezy, and don’t stop partying! -Sidney
You're not the only one with an album cover, you know? I don't know what you've done to bolster his career, but after my album was released, there was no need for another album for 4 years, which only happened after Pinkerton, the album we all know is the second best after Hurley.
Autumn and Winter are both great. Summer would’ve been great with killer production. Spring was ok, just suffers too much from the Elf-Renaissance sugary sweetness.
This is the most "dragging my feet" 7 I've ever seen Anthony give haha. I'm glad he enjoyed it, but it seemed like he really didn't want to admit Rivers put out a good SZNZ EP lol. Dark Enough To See The Stars is a great track imo and does work if only because it completely plays into the isolation that Christmas gives off as you get older.
@@Tirgo69 Oh be nice! I'm just having a little fun here and none of this is to be taken all that seriously. After three middling reviews, I think even he doesn't know how to react to his own positive take on the record.
It's a good EP but he's 100% right that it still has issues. Iambic is a great song at its core but it is jarring and feels too cut and pasted. Dark enough is solid but extremely repetitive. Honestly kinda wish they went with their original goal to sound more like Elliott Smith on this one. A bigger focus on acoustic fingerpicking rather than just doing normal rock would have made a sadder and more impactful EP.
I will stand by this: when you reverse the run order of the first four songs, it flows so much more. Again, this is a good reminder for people: the seasons weren't so much about the sonic aspect. It is the lyrical theming. Spring is happy and optimistic, Summer is angry, Autumn is anxiety, Winter is loss and sadness. Overall, I really enjoyed the SZNZ project. I do feel that them working on it through the year and basically up til the wire was a nice exercise for them, but I would have preferred if the original intent of Jake Sinclair (White and OKH producer) to oversee the whole thing and not just Spring. Rivers has discussed a possible remix they may do this year for a release of all 4 EPs as an album, but that has yet to be confirmed. If I had to rank them, I would go: Autumn Winter Spring Summer
Glad you actually reviewed this. As it released on the tail end of 2022, when you were doing the list week, and then having classic week, i just thought weezer fell by the waistland. As for the record itself, I actually dug it and it’s arguably my favourite of the sznz project. While the lyrics are still corny, Rivers does have some genuine emotional moments on this one. The interpolation of classical pieces, as in Basketball, feel much more subtle. The production is much better, the sound is near classic weezer, especially in tracks like “Dark Enough To See The Stars”. I do wish that, for whatever the weez boys does next, the tracks don’t feel as jarring in their transitions as some of the tracks in SZNZ. Overall, I liked it a ton. Highlights for me would be: I want a Dog, Basketball, and the last three tracks.
Also, i did end up enjoying SZNZ as a whole as an exercise of Rivers’ songwriting muscles. I think conceptually is great, but man, the rushed nature of the release is so frustrating. I feel this could’ve been a really special moment in weezer’s discography, but we ended up, yet again, with wasted potential.
@@flaminghead1va I’m just having flashbacks to Green Day’s UNO DOS TRÉ and I’m really struggling to think of a mainstream rock band that has ever done this concept good
The Sheraton Commander is the name of a hotel next to Harvard’s campus. Lines like “no I’m not one of the kids” probably refers to him going to college in his mid-late 20s.
That concludes the end of the SZNZ, it's been an interesting experience. I liked most of them and especially this one and Autumn, I hope Rivers slows down on the content a little bit though to give us a more refined album like EWBAITE, White or OK Human in the future, I don't think that's gonna happen but one can wish.
I think this EP is the closest we get to Weezer doing something the fans like, obviously speaking of the sound style, especially songs like I Want A Dog or Dark Enough to See the Stars that sound like they're ripped off. directly from EWBAE. A familiar sound that we love and that brings us a certain nostalgia for the Blue Album or perhaps for the White Album. And it's funny because all the EPS don't sound like anything they do here, so maybe they gave us fans a gift. In my opinion, Weezer is a band that tries to do a lot of things in a very short time, in less than 5 years they have given us about 6 albums and these 4 EPS, I think they should take things easy OK HUMAN was just as glorious than The White album but we are not for almost one album per year.
My rating for sznz is 4. Spring really bad 3. Summer kinda bad which has like a good song 2. Autumn I don’t care i like it 1. Winter I think is pretty good
Weird that people don't recognize the main point of this EP, which is not Christmas, but the winter of one's life? Rivers reflects on his childhood, his life choices, his shortcomings, his purpose in life, laments his mistakes and his loneliness, and acknowledges that he is ageing and wonders how his end will be. He is pretty young to start ponndering on these things, though. Don't die on us yet, Cuomo!
HOly SHIT. Anthony’s off to a great 2023. The Mac Miller redux, now this? What’s next? A Maladroit classic review? A new vinyl update? Maybe he should make an OnlyFans. Keep up the good work Mr. Review Man.

I had to go back and check the other EPs to make sure I wasn't misremembering them. But nope, this one is just 10x better for some reason.
Sometimes I wonder if the reason we don't progress as a society is because we still take Weezer too seriously, especially since the band's output of the past decade feels like them wanting us to stop taking them seriously.
Definitely the highlight of sznz. It was supposed to be more acoustic fingerpicked originally so Sheraton probably wouldn't have felt so out of place. Sad they went full on rock but I'm glad it sounds good and a solid collection of songs.

They got the emotional feel of all the seasons right, the aesthetics could have been better. Spring was warming, welcoming and happy. Summer was angry and youthful. Autumn was anxious and dark. i think the biggest misopportunity in their whole career was not naming their seasons project “weezons”
🗿
Agreed!
also not to be that guy but it’s “missed opportunity”
Their biggest misopportunity was when they didn’t retire after Pinkerton (red is ok)

Cool find! Makes me like the song way better.
This explains the Albinoni-Cuomo track here instead of a Vivaldi-Cuomo track like the other SZNZ albums since Albinoni is much darker and sad.
