The green album, while I do agree that it can be very boring, I believe is severely underrated. Songs like O Girlfriend, Smile, Knockout Dragout, Crab, and Photograph are very solid songs (especially O Girlfriend).
Let’s just forget about Maladroit. Rivers always had his creative spark and just because Green was kinda boring and Raditude had “Can’t Stop Partying” and Hurley had a weird cover doesn’t mean Weezer is hit or miss and Rivers lost his spark. Weezer never sucked, Weezer never was bad.
I know; the Green Album is fantastic. It gets a ton of crap just because it’s all short pop rock songs but that’s exactly why I like it. It’s their “early years Beatles” album, and it may not be for everyone, but that doesn’t make it garbage by a long shot.
Great vid. I've never heard of Pat Finn before. I'm definitely looking into that relationship. It explains so much. Rivers inhabits characters with his music. (Most obviously recently with Ok Human and Van Weezer. But even as a religious figure with SZNZ.) and I guess everybody thought Blue Rivers was the genuine one. But even on Blue he talks about songs like No One Else that he's singing as a character. I'd say the least "character-based" albums are Green and Maladroit, but even on those lps individual songs are sung through a character's voice. Looking forward to the doc!
While explaining Rivers reconnecting with his creative spark, Rules of Life was playing in the background. If you meant that Rules of Life was an example of the fire he's producing nowadays, then I completely agree, I absolutely love Rules of Life. I also get what you've been saying throughout the whole video.
I personally think maladroit was a great album, sure dope nose didn’t really mean anything, but the rest of the songs had deep personal lyrics, creative yet classic weezer song writing, burndt jamb is definitely in their top 10 best songs. Side note, I dislike the “smile” slander, the song is beautiful. But I’m glad you’re not one of those “weezer sucked after Pinkerton” people, and I like the make believe appreciation, good video 👍
I think this is a very interesting video. I’m glad that you mention that there are gems within their 2000s output. Honestly though, I think there has always been a gem on every album, even on Hurley or Make Believe. And I honestly do agree with some of their recent stuff being pretty ok honestly. Personally, “Run Raven Run” and “Dark Enough To See The Stars” I think are the best songs they’ve done since probably “King Of The World” from The White Album…
