The Playstation version of MK3 was a more accurate arcade conversion in my opinion. The Saturn version of UMK has a lot of the voice sampled scream sound effects missing used for when fighters take damage.
I never had this one, but I did get the next revision "Mortal Kombat Trilogy" for Windows 9x, which was identical to the PlayStation port save for much shorter load times.
It's not awful, but like other MK games... the computer controlled opponents aggressively read and counter your inputs, while being able to do the same skills with shortened animation frames. The version of Motaru in the Saturn port of UMK3 is a lot harder than the version of him found in the Genesis/Mega Drive port of UMK3. Like you said, there are much better fighting games on the system and couple that with the cheapness of the computer controlled opponent, it's not top 10 material. Looks and sounds good though. I only paid £28 for my copy, so it wasn't a regret (not that I regret buying any Saturn game - it's my fav Sega system.)
Had this game on Sega Saturn. Loved it but two things really brought down the quality: 1. Slow loading times during Endurance matches, Shang Tsung morphs, and finishing moves 2. NO brutalities!
UMK3 is a classic game. I played it at arcades when I had the chance. I almost would have got a Sega Saturn back in the day to have this game. But then MK Trilogy was gonna be released on Playstation and N64 for so I ended up with the PS1 instead just to play that. MKT did eventually get a port to the Saturn though. Anyway, good review!
That's a great question...but looking at the top 10 I don't quite think UMK3 could still get in there. I feel even the lower games on the list like Tomb Raider and Sega Rally, have better overall qualities! Thanks for comment!
CRAZY CYRAX is not just a series of buttons that unlocks secrets.. it describes how much of a beast the AI is with said character in this version of the game 🤣😂
It's ironic: I won a very large UM3 Tournament my Freshman year, and I'm AWFUL at the first two games in the series; but I effing hate the game compared to MK and MKII. I thought it was overly (rather than overtly) goofy. The first two games had either very "kung-fu" (MK) and/or visceral dark-fantasy (MKII) motifs; UMK3 just came across as gimmicky to me. The dial-a-combo system was just too repetitive to be fun IMO, and the aesthics just seemed corny to me. Robot ninjas wearing BMX gear? Stryker, in a crossing-guard outfit? Goofy, silly fatalities? Animalities that don't even match the ones from MK3? The whole thing just seemed "try-hard" to me, maybe over-stuffed. MK was like a classic low-budget kung-fu film, MKII was full of dark, brooding and often sinister tones and atmospheres...and (U)MK3 just came across like the video game version of a Michael Bay film, or a reboot of a classic 80s film toned down (e.g., RoboCop remake).
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is my favorite game in the series. It really went downhill with Mortal Kombat 4. Mortal Kombat was always best with realistic looking digitized graphics. I liked the dial-a-combo system. Security guard Kurtis Stryker is super lame I must admit. At least they gave him a machine gun for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 LOL 😂! I liked all of the rest of the characters especially Kabal, Cyrax, and Sub Zero (both versions). Some of the fatalities could have been better too. Overall I think Midway did a great job with Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

The saturn port is a pretty good port. Definitely better than the 16 bit counterparts. Although not perfect.
Near arcade perfect port that I remember
Indeed, must be pretty close!

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is bloody awesome. 😀👍🎮
UMK3 was immensely impressive in the arcades - a head turner similar to KI2.

Brutalities weren't part of this game. That was something they added to Genesis and SNES. PSX in Trilogy came with it.
I love Mortal Kombat, trouble is I'm just no good at it. Nice channel.
I'm not so good either!!

Cracking review, quick question. If the game had a full save feature, would it have made it into your top ten?

Maybe this is a dumb question on my part, but wouldn’t the game save if you have an active CR2032 battery in your Saturn?
The game has no save data feature at all. Lots of older fighters were made this way, especially ones that had 16 bit releases too.
Great review, few flaws, awesome game!
Thanks for the feedback!
This version it's amazing but, the load time it's really the horrendous part of the game🤦🏻♂️
Very easy?

@@gedaman that’s a nuisanced and thoughtful response, respect. Completely agree with the digitized thing.
@@popunkid The graphics and music are perfect in UMK3 too. Those tunes will stay in your head forever!
Ain't nothing but a Japanese PS1
The ps1 is also Japanese … 🤦♂️
