There is some noticeable slowdown and many of the sound effects are missing. Acclaim didn’t get this port right. The Saturn was perfectly capable of producing an arcade perfect port of MK2, but must have ran into some trouble with developing for the Saturn. Apparently it was difficult to program for.
Great review. My brother has both the Master System and Saturn version and he probably plays the Master System version more! Not because it's better, more as it's crazy it actually runs on the MS lol. It would be great to see your review of UMK3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy on Saturn.
Actually the Arcade hardware is based on a 32-Bit CPU and was ported to the 16-Bit systems. Also, you should play the arcade version since the music in that version is vastly superior.
I play and own all the ports and Saturn port is sort of the middle of the pact. Visually it looks great, very close to the arcade except for a different resolution, sound is also very good although the music is wonky, most of the songs are in the wrong stages and there’s obviously missing sound clips and sound effects. Gameplay is solid to good, Shang Tsung obviously has issues with morphing due to the cd loading, same with fatalities. There’s tiny gameplay differences like Kitanas fan lift pushing the opponent way too back then it should which messed up her timing for her air fan throw. Overall saturn port is solid, visually and sound quality it’s the best home console port, but I will say the snes and 32x port although inferior in both those departments, still have no compromises gameplay wise, you don’t have to deal with annoying loading and those ports even have more sound effects and voice clips than the much powerful sega Saturn. Also the snes port specifically has an exclusive hidden intro and an exclusive 4 on 4 vs endurance mode.
MKII is still a classic. I played it a lot at arcades on on the SNES. I thought it was strange when they released it on Saturn at the time when people were already into MK3. Regardless, this looked like a decent port with a few flaws. Good review!
@@gameshack1985 That’s a shame. I remember how big Mortal Kombat 2 was in arcades everywhere when I was young. I suppose I was fortunate to be in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania with a legendary mall that had all of the latest arcade games at Time Out.

There was really no excuse for this port not to be 100% arcade accurate.
Wow, it looks so close to the arcade, that’s soo cool!

agreed!
the saturn version of the music are literally just midi files from the ms dos port but with a different sf2 file.

Good review!
Thank you! 😄
The second mortal kombat game is bloody great and my favorite character from the sequel is Jax.😀👍🎮
I still think it is great to play too!
@@gameshack1985 you got that right. 😀👍🎮
I'd say it's close to arcade quality the character sprites. And graphics. Sound, music, and voice overs aren't. And loading times.
Thanks
You never played the arcade version?! Were you hiding under a rock during the mid ‘90s?
@@gedaman we only had mk1 in an arcade near me!!

It looks a bit slower than the PS1 version, you can play the arcade version on the PS2.
This is PAL remember! 😂
This seems terrible.
It still plays pretty good!
