Kelphelp nah man the more details the better, if anything I'd put where you make the comparisons and stuff as a pin or in the description Anyways, I liked it, I needed the info :)
HKTV Thats actually a wonderful idea. Shot might as well do time stamps too actually to redirect to certain sections! Thank you so much for the wonderful idea !
That Sega CD intro is God tier. The Saturn/PS1 versions are not even close. Also, here's the best way to play this game and its sequel. Start with Lunar Eternal Blue - the sequel - and play it all the way until you get to Taben's Peak and meet Nall. Then Save right after and go play Lunar Silver Star Story to completion. Then come back and finish Eternal Blue. You've just experienced one the most, if not THE most, epic Stories and Gaming experience in JRPG gaming history. I know, you're welcome.
Almost 5 years late to comment, but only the PS1 and some later versions had on-screen enemies you could avoid. The original Sega CD games were random encounters. Also it wasn't mentioned that the Sega CD version has a drastically different story than all of the ports/remakes. One of your characters permanently leaves the party at a very early stage in the game.
Lunar is an AMAZING game. I grew up on the Sega CD & later the PS version. Still always preferred the Sega CD version, it's lower quality in terms of technical stuff but that's part of the charm IMO
I really liked the GBA version. Graphically it's my favorite. Sure technically it's the worst. But it just, I dunno it feels just right. Overall I typically replay the PS1 game. But that's nostalgia mainly
this video was insanely interesting. My first Lunar game was the GBA version and i loved it. I never knew it was a port until i found the PS1 version in college. I remember not really liking it on the PS1, prefering the art style of the GBA funny enough. Even funnier is the fact that the game recently popped into my head, so i was describing it to a friend from work, and he looked it up. Thank to that, i learned about the PSP port that im gonna be playing later today and am very excited for.
I played the GBA, IOS and PSP versions. My biggest gripe with the PSP version is that it had long loading screens between each map transition. Not only that, it also stopped the music as you go through the transition, only for it restart when you've entered a new screen. This problem is really jarring if you had to transverse through multiple map transitions (e.g Kyle's fortress). If it wasn't for that issue, I would think the PSP version would be the definitive version.
Lunar and Lunar 2 didn't get the attention I feel they deserved. They're truly hidden gems. Plus when Luna summons Althena's Fortress it kickstarted my road on puberty.
I thought you guys would talk about differences made in the story between the versions, such as how Luna stayed behind in the original Sega CD version, but stays with the group in subsequent versions (until she gets abducted).
Highly disagree, the game's soundtrack has the highest quality with the instruments, and the graphics feel the best and more faithful to the original artwork, the load times are atrocious though. Either way, enjoy what you enjoy, and good day mate.
The Sega CD version of Lunar The Silver Star, (and its sequel Eternal Blue), is the best in my opinion because it was the original version and made it worth having a Sega CD.
For many people who grew up with it I can totally understand their love for the original title. It truly made the Sega CD worth the purchase at the time!
I loved the Sega CD version, but the revised story in complete made me feel so good. It was all about Luna. Her getting on the boat in saith made the whole remake worthwhile
Very cool video. I loved the PS1 port the most. I never played it when it came out (i was 2 when it was released in the U.S.) played it in 2016 for the first time and i was amazed at just how well it has aged. Still a great title.
SUPER LATE to the party here, but I totally agree with FightClubHubbs, this series is my fav RPG series of all time, and I have been here since the beginning. Hands down, Sega CD all the way! I own all of it, including the disappointing gameboy news delivery game in the universe, but Sega CD has all the nostalgia and was so far ahead of its time!
@@Kelphelp just happy to say there's still love out there for this whole classic I have all those old versions haha. Now to hook the old Sega CD back up it's been a decade since that playthrough
I'm a HUGE Lunar fan! Just finished the game yesterday for the 2nd time in 17 years. I'll be putting my game play on youtube this weekend to document my most excellent victory. I didn't know there was a GBA and PSP version though so I'm very excited. Thx for the vid!
For me the PS1 version is the definitive one. If the Saturn MPEG version was ever brought here I might weigh the pros and cons, but I can't read Japanese. The PSP version has its strong points, and I love the new lyrics for the songs, but something about the visual design makes the environments feel very small, and some of the voices actually don't hit right for me. Better acting, but worse casting choices, at least in a few cases.
There is a fan made patch for the MPEG version that basically inserts the Working Designs script into the game, interestingly they've dubbed it using the Harmony version. So, you get the music and voices from that game for the FMVs and WD's script for everything else. There were plans to do a version that kept the Japanese music and FMVs and subtitle everything but it looks like the project has been abandoned.
I actually bought my PlayStation because I loved Lunar on Sega CD and heard that it was ported over. I LOVED the packaging including the cloth map it came with. I swear in the original you could not see the enemies when walking around though. I thought it was random and I didn't like that in the PSOne version.
I didn't know the gba version was a downgrade port as that is the first and only Lunar I played. This explains why I could never find any video's of the game I remember. Personally I preferred the more cartoonish and expressive sprites of the GBA title. I would also say I prefer the map as it is the GBA, if there are no battles or hidden dungeon walkable map is excess data you don't need.
I own all versions of the game, minus the Mpeg Saturn version, and I think they all have their own pluses and minuses. I like how Legends and Harmony both have the Ramus sprite with brown hair to match his portrait, whereas the older ones have him with blue hair.
Funny enough, my only experience with Lunar was the GBA version and I loved it to death. I probably beat that game 5 or 6 times. Looking forward to playing the better versions!
The PSP isn't bad either, and if anything it is more of a reimagining of the Lunar titles than the others which is pretty cool. Other than that it is pretty damn solid!. GBA on the other hand.....
Kelphelp Yeah... replayed the GBA version of the game a while ago and well... it doesn't hold up as well as I remembered it being. The music made me feel like I was playing some cheap knock off, surprised they didn't just try to re-do the music rather than using a very compressed sample of the original songs. The graphics still somewhat decent.
@@TanukiCris I have played all five versions of the game and the PSOne (or Saturn if you can read Japanese or are just so familiar with the game you can get by) version or the Sega CD versions are the best versions of the game.
GBA and PSP were too easy. The sprite work was better but I think you get more depth with the PS1 games. The sega CD games just seem too old school to have any appeal anymore although EB has aged better that TSS. I just feel LSSC and LEBC have the best presentations.
@@MLBlue30 and you're wrong, the majority of fans and critics agree then Sega CD versions are faaaaar superior and therefore have the most appeal by a landslide. Thanks for trying?
I’d love if someone did a re-translation of the Saturn MPEG edition, as the FMVs are even higher quality than the PS1 version (Low Score Boy has some videos talking about the Saturn and how it works). The Saturn version has more frames of animation because it’s actually more powerful than the PS1, due to having 2 video processors. I wish there was some furigana above the Kanji, so it would be easier to read. It would help if you used RGB Scart for the PS1 and Saturn so you can get the best video output (check out My Life in Gaming’s Chanel for more info).
Actually all of my videos use SCART and RGB in some way shape or form so they are all the best video output possible. Been following MLiG for a damn long time and their videos helped my setup greatly.
I love Lunar so much I appreciate each version for different reasons. I prefer the Sega CD overall as it was the original and ground breaking for the time. I think it holds up well against a lot of the SNES greats of the time, but never got the recognition because it was on a Sega peripheral that not many people had. The PS1 version finally made the game available to the masses albeit much later. To be honest I even like the GBA version for a nice light, portable version that you can pull out and play in short bursts. The PSP version is ok...the graphical overhaul is nice and the sound is good but it's a loadfest. Good video guys. Thanks.
I loved the Sega CD version. I played the shit out of it. I am disappointed with 1 thing of the PS one version. The world map exploring for the PS One version is disappointing.
@@Shakedaddy4x yes, more open space in sega cd version. Dungeons too were completely different. But thats just preference on which one you prefer. I liked both ways they did it.
Sega CD version for me. Prefer the music too but it was the 1st version I played. Although the cutscenes and sound may not be impressive by todays standards, at the time my mind was blown. There was nothing like it at the time and cd gaming had just came out
I wonder why they used a completely new and inferior soundtrack for the 32bit versions of the game. I really love the Burg theme of the original Sega-CD-version and missed it dearly in Silver Star Story.
Years later I want to plug the Apple version, which now works on - iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Mac, with iCloud save and sync. As a Mac and iPhone owner, I can play on my desktop but also take it on the go and resume where I left off. When the game came out in 2012 (the iOS port), it wasn't very good. But the developer has been supporting it a lot, the most recent update was yesterday (June 2023, for those reading this in the future). The main thing is the options and the way they've tied the game together. The storyline is taken from Silver Star Story Complete (Saturn/PS1). However, the FMV and voice acting are the higher quality versions from Harmony (PSP). Visuals are based on the Saturn, with the PS1's transparencies added. You can choose between Saturn (low-res), a high-res option that maintains the original charm but looks cleaner, and a wide-screen (16:9) version of the latter. It looks stunning. The Saturn famously had higher quality audio than the PS1 version (the latter used MIDI synth which is why it fell off, the same blunder used in the original PC port of FF7). You can choose between 32-bit (Saturn) or 64-bit (PSP) audio. They have a difficulty setting, choosing between easy (Saturn) or harder (PS1). Working Design was famous for making the localized release more grindy, so this is a way around that. You can select the classic Sega CD UI or an upscaled UI. And for the Japanese purists, for the first time you can switch between English and Japanese voice overs. There are more settings I'm missing, but to me this has become the definitive version. With the recent flurry of updates, I think they're gearing up to port this to other platforms. In the meantime, Apple users have an amazing exclusive in terms of gaming, something you really can't say too often. The same company that ported Lunar to iOS also ported Vay (Sega CD). They are the only two games from the developer. They lost their web domain and, if it weren't for the constant updates to Lunar, you'd think these guys went out of business awhile back.
The best version was the Sega CD version. The Playstation version (Saturn version, I guess, according to this video) had better graphics, but butchered the dungeons and the world map, and completely rewrote the dialogue. It was drastically different. The world was nowhere near as big, the dungeons and world map were all reduced in size.
@@antichoice1 Yeah these great sega cd dungeons. One tile wide tubes, wow impressive. dragon quest 1 had better designed dungeons in comparison, the ps1 version wipes the floor with this age old design philosophy.
@@brotbrotsen1100 So you don't like narrow corridors LOL? the PS version had dungeons a toddler could navigate. The Sega CD version had vast mazes. And no, Dragon Warrior did NOT have better dungeons, but it's a brilliant classic anyway.
Love the idea and thank you for making this! I notice in a lot of your videos you tend to focus a lot on the graphics and sound and not so much the content differences. Going forward I'd like to learn more about the content differences when you compare ports
It can depend on each port and content difference. Some don't have much at all while others do. Feel free to check out my other videos to see what I mean
@@Kelphelp Understood. For Lunar, I think a whole separate video could be made just on the content difference alone. Not small differences (that would take forever) but big differences in story, characters, dungeons, battle systems, etc. Would love to see this from you! Unlike RE, comparing the ports of Lunar is still a relatively blue ocean
This. The content differences vary wildly from the first few hours of play. Og luna leaves early. Second version Nash joins early with ulterior motives and Luna stays. Third version, well...
The sega cd version was my first rpg. Rented it based off the box art. Ended up buying it that weekend before returning the rental. So to me itll always be my favorite rpg and story. Never played the saturn or gba ports.
@@Kelphelp I'm in the process of buying my old rpgs. I'm dreading the hunt for the sega cd copy. I got the ps1 today for 100 cib. Playing it now. But if I come across it on gba I'll pick it up. I kinda dug the music for what it was.
If you have the PS1 that's essentially the Saturn except for couple features Iisted above so you are good. There's diminishing return on that so you got a great version imho
Lunar Sega CD my favorite game of all time. I have to play the PS1 one day. I do have it working perfect on an emulator. Subscribed. Anyone talking about Lunar deserves a subscription.
Test 12:12 You be way too kind man thank you. I really wanted to do the video justice so tried my best to talk about each version as best as possible, but very glad how it came out. Maybe I should do Lunar 2 one day? 😉
I thought the Playstation remakes were better than the Sega CD versions but I was dead wrong~! Keep the Sega CD versions and throw away the Playstation ports!
Ninja Hayate Ahhhhh so you like thr CD versions! Curious to hear your reasons, but they do feel as if they are their own thing compared to their newer ports.
The SCD and Sat and PS1 versions are all slightly to largely different. LOVED the original SCD version! !! The background info and history was DIFFERENT and very deep between both LunAr and Lunar EB. I'll just say the group that Athena supposedly dis' ed a group of people... the Vile Tribe if remembered correctly. Well Hiro in Lunar EB is actually the well... hero and a descendant of the Vile Tribe from the first game! So the people that were set apart by Althena originally end up helping saving the world from Zophar who (I think is a 3rd secret goddess not god)
I’ve played the PSP version during my final school year back in 2010. Loved the heck out of it. I’d recommend this one. Too bad they didn’t make a remake of the second game.
PierDaken Tbh I really think the 2nd game needs a huge revision. I love what it presents but personally am in the minority where I feel it can be rather horrible in enemy placement and dungeon design. I really disliked it quite a bit
If your going to compare these versions. You should indicate some of the flaws in the psp port as well and changes specifically that people will want to know, such as a reduced script, easier dungeons and gamplay mechanics and probably perhaps one of the largest difference is no over world. Other wise good job.
I only played and owned the PS1 version, bought the collector's edition back in the day, but I gotta say, I love the music from the Sega CD version, if you could take that and put it over the Saturn version, perfection!
@@Kelphelp Haha no worriessss tho, if it's not that it'll be something else you start noticing, whatevs. Still a wonderfully scripted and edited feature! And now I'm off to figure out if I'll replay SSSC from my childhood on Vita or PS3~ was surprised how gorgeous Sega Saturn version was too!
I grew up with the Sega CD version and it's still one of my all time favorites of any console generation. However, I just picked up a PSP version and started playing it the other day. It was so different and fresh I had to boot up my Sega CD version to compare. I'm enjoying the PSP version as it feels like completely new. But the Sega CD version is near and dear to me. :)
When he was saying that the saturn version is superior. I couldn’t tell the difference at all. This is likely one of those moments where they need to be side by side.
And it happened as well. Sometimes graphically you really can't tell the difference unless you put them side-by-side. And that's fine because at the end of the day as long as you play the version that you want to that's all that counts right?
Let me start by saying I don’t know how there’s not a collection of the Lunar games on the Nintendo switch and PlayStation 5!!! I would double dip and buy it on both platforms. Lunar is my favorite game of all time I played every version. Burnie Stolar is the reason why do you say the Saturn failed. Sega should have sued that man!!! He is responsible for denying so many amazing games coming to the Sega Saturn that became classics on the Play station. He even got games canceled like Eternal Champions 3 (there’s a picture of it on The back of the box of the original launch Sega Saturn and the reason why I bought a Sega Saturn) I often wondered if he was on Sony‘s payroll to destroy Sega.
"Nash is supposed to come in 5 hours later". Lol, what? Did it take you 5 hours to finish the cave, go to the forest to get the axe and go to Saith? What were you doing that whole time? o_O
THe first one I started with is Lunar SSSC on the PS1. My first playthrough must have been 65 hours total. I went through withdrawl when it was all over lol. Only because the dialogue and characters just really grew on me. I dont think the first sega CD games aged as well, other than the great soundtracks. Id go with the Playstation one versions for best content. Its the music that really makes this series in general and Id hate for it to be forgotten, there must be a way to get all these games as a complilation or someting on Steam or somewhere. Due to circumstances I dont think we will see a Lunar 3. I think it may be up to the fans to make the game that they want, this franchise deserved more than to let it sit in limbo as it has. At least a remake for EBC since the other one has had enough already.
I know that this is an old post, but I hope that you still respond. I heard that Lunar SS is a pretty short game, that it's around 20 hours or so. How did you get to expand it so much? I tend to be pretty thorough and explore RPGs at my own pace, enjoying the experience. Based on what others have said, I could see myself stretching this to around 30-35 hours. I haven't played it yet, but just bought a complete copy for PS1 with the map, soundtrack, leather manual and outer box (along with a complete copy of Lunar 2). Hopefully you can give some details on your playthrough.
Could you do a video like this again but on lunar 2? As this video is really good in explaining everything and giving a final thought on what you might like
Lloyd Maclennan You know I might be kinda personally biased against Lunar 2 as I actually despise alot about the game personally. I wouldn't mind to do a video though, but I don't have all of the titles so that is usually a reason why it can be difficult right now
Eternal Blue is superior to Silver Star It took me two playthroughs of the Sega CD version of each to see it and the third cemented it. As for the Remakes it's not even close, the Silver Star remake was awful compared to the original. Dropping the whole changing things for the sake of changing things directive and a less is more approach would of helped it.
I definetly won't deny that at times. My scripts are usually bullet point based and paraphrasing what I wrote into words, so more or less it can be cohesive, but it does make for a less robotic experience.
Noone addresses the narrative differences. Oh Sega CD Luna never left on the adventure. She stayed behind until it was too late. PSP Nash joins early and has even more ulterior motives. The narratives between the versions are substantial. I wish there was a video that broke down the plot differences
There's a pretty good English translation for the Saturn version of the game currently, so you get the best of both worlds with the Japanese voice acting and English text. They are apparently even working on adding subtitles to the cutscenes. My personal favourite version of the game though is the PSP version. A lot of my friends complain about the lack of an overworld but to me it was just there to pad out the play time rather than adding anything to the story.
Oooooooo I might have ti try out the translation to see what it's about. And big agree on the overworld. While I do feel it takes away from the game it really doesn't. Just the feeling of interacting the world and such
The psp version has long loading screens, unfortunately. The main pro is that it updates the UI and fixes the difficulty to be more accurate to the original Japanese version
I know I'm 5 years late, but I'm glad this video slid into my recommended list. Great video on one of my favorite rpg series. My personal favorite version is the sega cd, but I'd say the best one is ps1. The sega cd version is the 2nd rpg I ever played and it blew my 10 year old mind at the time.
5 years never too late and damn even after this time I'm glad people are enjoying the video regardless. Thanks so much for watching after all this time!
I'm still trying to find a comparison between the Saturn MPEG version and the PS1 version. Apparently the MPEG version looks and sounds better, but by how much? Is it objectively better? Also, I find it funny that the "high quality CD audio" in the early versions is some pretty generic MIDI soundfont outside of the intro.
there are many other games (mostly fighters) where they compare the mpeg version against its ps1 counterpart. the difference is pretty obvious that the saturn is objectively superior
Thanks for the comparison video. For me personally the psp version is my choice, which is fitting since I've only owned that version, but have played through it probably at least 3 times already. I really enjoy it, a shame the 2nd game wasn't also put on the psp though. I never had a Sega CD, or a Saturn, but I did have a Playstation. I was just into different games back then like die hard, tomb raider, resident evil, etc. I didn't get into rpg titles until I played chrono trigger on Playstation, then final fantasy games. Lunar was a bit out of my price range when I did get interested, so I unfortunately had to pass on that and other great Playstation rpg games. By the time I could afford it I was already into Dreamcast and Playstation 2 games.
Lemme tell y'all a story about Lunar... My Brother pre-ordered the PS1 version, waited years for it to release, when he finally got the game, he went to jail. I started playing it while he was in jail, and got all the way to the Ghaleon fight, but I was a little bit, so I didn't even think to play the Flute thingy, so I kept getting owned by those stupid Lightning Bolt things... So I'm 36 now, and still never saw the ending. My Brother is still livid, cuz he thinks I got to beat it before him, Just last September I FINALLY broke down & told him I never got to see the ending, and his exact words were "Still mad, but also happy cuz you didn't get to see the Ending." LMAO (And for thsoe wondering, after awhile I did start to use the GameShark to just powerlevel faster)
As for my opinions. I'll admit, I did not grow up with any of these games, so I have no nostalgic attachment to any of the games. If I had to chose which ports I like the most, I have to give it to the handheld versions, as in the PSP and the GBA versions. The PSP version for the better graphics, sounds, voice acting, added story elements, and the smoother gameplay. And the GBA version for being one of the better RPG GBA ports, and is still impressive despite many exclusions made. And I gotta say, despite it not having any animated cutscenes, the animations for the sprites more than make up for it, and they still have show the character's personalities in a decent way during the cutscene's. If the game needed to make changes so that it could fit on the hardware, I'd say this was the right call. What wasn't the right call however, was the music and sound effects. The amazing soundtrack from the other ports is pretty much butchered and crumbled into pieces in the worst way possible. One of my least favorite aspects about the GBA was that it was a 32 bit console, using 8 bit sound effects. As much as I love the system, it really didn't do the music justice. But still, for a port that I can take with me and play in short bursts, it does it's job well enough. But the PSP version, in my opinion, is the superior port. I already gave reasons why, so I won't go over those again, but I will address something here. The voice acting. I think the voice acting is much better than both the original and PS1 versions. I really am not a fan of the original voice acting since it was made during an era when video game voice acting was notoriously bad. Granted it does have it's charm, but the redub was very welcome, meaning I can enjoy the story with much better performances with actors I really enjoy. I think the only reason why so many people prefer the original voice acting is mainly due to nostalgia bias, and/or finding the bad voice acting really charming in a so bad it's good kind of way, which honestly bothers me. It's like when the PSP version of Castlevania Symphony of the Night was given a completely new English dub with a new script and given actual voice actors. Now granted, I did like the original voice actors of the original PS1 version, and Robert Belgrade is definitely my preferred voice for Alucard, but I did enjoy Yuri Lowenthaul's take on the character, and the other performances were good all around. It's sort of a Godzilla dub situation, where allot of people prefer the bad dubs made for the Showa series, but criticized Funimation's dub of Shin Godzilla because it was "too good", and wanted the dub to be bad so they could make fun of it. Basically, I prefer the redub on the PSP port of the game more than the original, and the PSP version is my overall preferred way to play the game.
Always a fan of the Sega CD original. PS1 was cool but it disappointed me by getting rid of random battles. The enemies on the map thing just always felt lame to me. I played the PSP version recently after hearing good things.. it's not really bad but the dungeons seem really compressed and the overworld is basically gone. The art style drawn at a weird angle really took some getting used to too. It was good to see it in a new way, but the Sega CD is still the way to go. Glad the PS remakes are there too since it probably got a lot more eyes on the series. I got Lunar sort of randomly. I'd never heard of it before but had a Sega CD and a girl at a used game shop was helping me while I was trying out Sega CD games. She asks if I happen to like RPGs, and I said yes. She went off somewhere and came back with Lunar.. I bought it quickly, and my Final Fantasy playing Nintendo friends (I was one too!) we're jealous of this awesome Sega CD rpg..
wow I had no idea the sega cd and saturn and ps1 versions of the game were so different from the GBA version. I have only ever played the GBA version, and I loved it, though I do remember it being short. Im convinced I have to replay one of the other ports of the game now. I saw that its available on the google app store for my phone. is that version any good?
I've never actually seen someone who actually likes to actually say actually as much as this guy actually seems to actually like to actually say actually.
I agree with that statement. SSS has a great coming of age story that doesn't break the mold but it's a fun one to get through and memorable at that. Balanced RPg mechanics just make it a great experience. For EB I never liked how annoyingly long some dungeons were and little ways to revive your mana. It just made dungeon crawling more of a chore than bliss
@@Kelphelp EB had charming characters and a great soundtrack. It's been a while so I don't remember the dungeons being too much of a crawl. Whenever I get around to SSS it will probably be the PSP version.
@@UnboxerofWorlds I’ve been playing the PSP version on my PSTV through a PS4 controller and have been loving it so far. I wish I played this when I had more time but better now than never.
I have a strange sort of complaint about professional voice acting, even though its "better quality" it also feels more phoned in/generic in part as due to their experience etc you expect a higher quality performance plus you can often tell an actor from their voice as they rarely change from one voice with a slight accent change and many times a budget team of non professionals feels like the effort and love is there.
The Sega CD version has some crude humor, and seems to be geared more towards adults. I originally played the psx version and quickly realized that lunar wasn't gonna stick around, it seemed to have only one shipment of games and the used market only saw one copy at each store. Talk about rare. Pick this game up even if it's beat up. I sold my original lunar copies to a friend who still has them ! And it was amazing seeing all the original content. No wonder I bought this over anything else back then !
Nostalgia goggles for sure as the PSP version was left in the dust by you two for no reason at all, it got spoken about for about 10 seconds and hubbs didn't even mention it. It is literally the definitive version, basically a love song to the original. Great video though!
Ty for making this video! I might have missed it, but I'm trying to figure out if there is an official 2-disc version that was released for the PS1 port. I'm seeing that there is a 4-disc one and a 2-disc one, but I'm just trying to make sure I'm not getting scammed when buying the 2-disc version.
Played the GBA version first and loved it, even though it felt minimal. Played the PSP version second and really enjoyed it, but didn't love the character design. Playing the PS1 version and I really like it, maybe my favorite version. Felt like a good full story, love the sprites and the fmvs.
Honestly, you really cant compare Sega CD versions to later versions when they later became complete. Sure CD ones were shorter but the music was different (better too 😂), storyline and how things went were different i.e. Ghalleon on a vengeful rampage wanting to destroy everyone vs someone who wanted to control dragons and Althena to be a god and rule, and well you get the idea. Truth be told I am SUPER grateful we are finally getting the looooooooong awaited remasters of Silver Star and Eternal Blue complete (now if Golden Sun can just get same treatment and preferably not locked to Nintendo) I TRULY hope between both remastered play and getting to play like good old days that VA and music will be same golden score that was perfect and that they will include the Sega CD versions as well
Sega CD Lunar is amazing. There was nothing really like it at the time.
nd it holds up quite nicely too. They did a stellar job

5 years never late to comment. But always glad to have more little facts sprinkled in like this for context. Thanks for the words mang
Saturn had that as well
@@robknight164 Yeah at the time I posted I didn't know the Saturn remake was the original remake that was ported to all the other systems.
Wait, I played the PSP version and if we're thinking about the same party member, they left permanently too. I was devastated, because I liked them.
Lunar is an AMAZING game. I grew up on the Sega CD & later the PS version. Still always preferred the Sega CD version, it's lower quality in terms of technical stuff but that's part of the charm IMO
The intro was better on the Sega CD version too. In the ps1 they also reduced the amount of spells you could learn.
I actually only played the GBA version...now that I've discovered the other versions I'm like man I missed out...but I love the GBA version so much!
Bruh haha yeah you really missed out the gba version is awful 😂
GBA version is cute.
CUTE!!
I really liked the GBA version. Graphically it's my favorite. Sure technically it's the worst. But it just, I dunno it feels just right.
Overall I typically replay the PS1 game. But that's nostalgia mainly
ITS GETTING A REMASTER LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Hella excited to replay Lunar 1. Such a solid RPG
@@Kelphelp and eternal blue finally getting the remaster love too I feel too many people sleep on that amazing game
Still can't fathom how excellent the Sega CD music score was. Thanks for this vid!
Thank you for watching!!!!!
this video was insanely interesting.
Im real glad you loved it man. Thanks for giving my video a watch!
How did you like the PSP version?
I thought thr stylistic look of the game was great, combat was pretty smooth! It's a pretty solid way to play. Saturn is my perso al favorite
Take a drink everytime he says "actually." I will make every attempt to attend the funeral.
But if you dead how you gonna attend the funeral
I don't drink. :p
Probably less of an issue if you play it on Vita!
Lunar and Lunar 2 didn't get the attention I feel they deserved. They're truly hidden gems. Plus when Luna summons Althena's Fortress it kickstarted my road on puberty.
I still have my biases against Lunar 2 but I will say I loved everything about Lunar 1. A great title through and through and hope to see more of it!

One of the best games I've ever played. I played the Sega CD version. It was amazing for the time.
And still holds up. God I adore Lunar 1 like crazy
just from this video I would say I prefer the Sega CD version based on the music alone. To me the PS1/Saturn ports both sound cheesy compared to it.
I thought you guys would talk about differences made in the story between the versions, such as how Luna stayed behind in the original Sega CD version, but stays with the group in subsequent versions (until she gets abducted).
No this is the differences between the ports, not so much the stories.
The Sega CD music, and even sound effects are by far the best in the series. The PSP version is freaking weird, and doesn't feel at all like Lunar.
Sega CD Lunar the Silver Star is my favorite game of all time. Thank you for making this!
Hearing that “Alex, Oh Alex” for Sega cd, thank you! Total nostalgia happiness hit me.
Hahaha it does hit that chime well
Very cool video. I loved the PS1 port the most. I never played it when it came out (i was 2 when it was released in the U.S.) played it in 2016 for the first time and i was amazed at just how well it has aged. Still a great title.
Appreciate it man. And what's wonderful is that even in 2019, the game holds up pretty nicely! So that's something I appreciate
Never too late to the party man, don't even worry, the Sega CD is a fantastic version and a great way to play, i know it's many folks favorite version
No problem at all thank you for the watch!
Hahaha well, anime did have its inconsistencies back in the day so that is yet another element that added to this as well!
What a great video! I love comparisons like this of games that have multiple ports.
Well you're in luck because that's literally jy entiiiireeeee channel :3
Kudos for this. I play on PS1 and try to find comparison with GBA, boy I got more than I wanted. Kudos once again
Happy this really helped then! Thanks so much for watching!
The Lunar plot was so good because they had a novelist help with the story (but I don't know the exact details).
Novelist, wait the story was based on a Novel?
@@Kelphelp No no, it wasn't based on a novel; the story was just made by the novelist Kei Shigema. It's an original plot.
no wonder I found the plots and characters so engaging.
Funny enough, my only experience with Lunar was the GBA version and I loved it to death. I probably beat that game 5 or 6 times. Looking forward to playing the better versions!
Then you be in for a treat. There is so Much to look forward to brother you gonna fall in love. I adored PS1 Lunar and I think you will too
Personally, having played the GBA as a kid and the PSP version a few years ago. I feel as though the PSP version is the best version of the game.
@@TanukiCris
I have played all five versions of the game and the PSOne (or Saturn if you can read Japanese or are just so familiar with the game you can get by) version or the Sega CD versions are the best versions of the game.
The intro for the Sega CD version was better than the rest
Def was a cool little in game animation they did. Still dig the newer cutscenes but they both serve their purpose.
Your dream come true congrats
I love Lunar so much I appreciate each version for different reasons. I prefer the Sega CD overall as it was the original and ground breaking for the time. I think it holds up well against a lot of the SNES greats of the time, but never got the recognition because it was on a Sega peripheral that not many people had. The PS1 version finally made the game available to the masses albeit much later. To be honest I even like the GBA version for a nice light, portable version that you can pull out and play in short bursts. The PSP version is ok...the graphical overhaul is nice and the sound is good but it's a loadfest. Good video guys. Thanks.
No thank you for taking a look at the video! Really appreciate everyone who watches.
I loved the Sega CD version. I played the shit out of it. I am disappointed with 1 thing of the PS one version. The world map exploring for the PS One version is disappointing.
why? what's different? Is that the only thing you like more about the Sega CD version?
@@Shakedaddy4x the sega cd you could walk around like normal, the ps1 one it was certain paths to travel.
@@shaolinlueb You can still walk freely in the PS1 version though. You mean there was a lot more open space in the sega cd version?

Sega CD version for me. Prefer the music too but it was the 1st version I played. Although the cutscenes and sound may not be impressive by todays standards, at the time my mind was blown. There was nothing like it at the time and cd gaming had just came out
I wonder why they used a completely new and inferior soundtrack for the 32bit versions of the game. I really love the Burg theme of the original Sega-CD-version and missed it dearly in Silver Star Story.
@@TheContraspirit at least it was on the soundtrack CD that was included in the PS1 game.

Damn tons of good info right here! Thanks for taking the time to post this!
They trimmed the fat, it is easily the superior version in my book.
@@brotbrotsen1100 They trimmed the fun, not the fat. And the new dungeon designs were atrocious.

With Sega working hard with Atlus, that seems very likely actually. You never know man
Kelphelp too late to know now but sega of America really messed a lot up in my opinion the Saturn should have been great here
they are slowly getting better with this. So many ex exlusives even coming to pc these days is a huge step
Honestly, if they were to combine the Sega CD version and the PSP version it would be the most definitive version
Not a bad way to look at it tbh. Be a chill version for sure.
Pier play the remake with an emulator. You can emulate it with either the SegaCD or PS1.
If your going to compare these versions. You should indicate some of the flaws in the psp port as well and changes specifically that people will want to know, such as a reduced script, easier dungeons and gamplay mechanics and probably perhaps one of the largest difference is no over world. Other wise good job.
Appreciate the words man. I'll keep it in mind when I create videos in the near future.
That and they turn Quark into a fucking parrot with Laryngitis.
I only played and owned the PS1 version, bought the collector's edition back in the day, but I gotta say, I love the music from the Sega CD version, if you could take that and put it over the Saturn version, perfection!

This is exactly the video I was looking for, even in 2022. Thanks guys!

It's Def a cool version for sure bringing something unique the others don't have.
At this point it's definitely a moot point since it was about 30 years but would be nice to see this series reborn in some way
There is now. Lunar 1 and 2 remaster announced for nearly every console.
@@stephentrader9142 yep I seen it yesterday can’t wait!!!!!

lvl grinding?
yee it like 2-3 hours I think even with grinding
The guy that made this video definitely never played the game. He's not worth watching.
I wouldn't mind to do a video though, but I don't have all of the titles so that is usually a reason why it can be difficult right now
Eternal Blue is superior to Silver Star
It took me two playthroughs of the Sega CD version of each to see it and the third cemented it.
As for the Remakes it's not even close, the Silver Star remake was awful compared to the original. Dropping the whole changing things for the sake of changing things directive and a less is more approach would of helped it.
I don't think I have but I do have a complete SSC copy I got long ago, it's been so long I don't even remember any ore
Great comparison, thanks man. One thing: You say "actually" a ton, not sure you notice that
Mothra Actually...... :3 but you are right. I need to be a little more consciouz with how i speak, but like all of my videos its a work in progress :)
The script for this video was kind of bizarre but nevertheless was very informative. Thanks a lot.
Nice one mate 👍🏻

Good stuff my dude! It's a great ittle and brought me alot of Joy! Hope it does the same for you!

Paul Woelke Honestly I wish I had an MPEG card cuz my Saturn is region free and can do it but Unfortunetly no go. If I had it I could revisit it
there are many other games (mostly fighters) where they compare the mpeg version against its ps1 counterpart. the difference is pretty obvious that the saturn is objectively superior
Great video, sub earned

Lunar Silver Star Story Touch
👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀
My Brother is still livid, cuz he thinks I got to beat it before him, Just last September I FINALLY broke down & told him I never got to see the ending, and his exact words were "Still mad, but also happy cuz you didn't get to see the Ending."
LMAO
(And for thsoe wondering, after awhile I did start to use the GameShark to just powerlevel faster)
Sega CD for sure has more charm. Was one of the best games of my youth.
And good to know that it's going to be re-released now for all y'all
As for my opinions.
What do you guys think, should i play it for sega cd or ps1 for the first playthrough?
More or less they are kinda different playstyles but I think the PS1 is the most talked about. Either or would be a lovely one to do
CD
I've always considered grandia the spiritual successor to lunar
You know I haven't played Grandia but hearing this significantly bumps the series rn for me to play
I'll take the original Sega CD version. The soundtrack really sets it apart, and the pixel art is endearing.
Never played this but the Sega CD version music and sound effects sound better than the rest that open sound was great the rest sound nothing like it
Always a fan of the Sega CD original.
The gba version was the introduction for me to this series. I finished it and loved it, and now I can't wait to play the other versions.
Its such a huge improvement over the others. I think you are gonna enjoy the overall experience.
wow I had no idea the sega cd and saturn and ps1 versions of the game were so different from the GBA version. I have only ever played the GBA version, and I loved it, though I do remember it being short. Im convinced I have to replay one of the other ports of the game now. I saw that its available on the google app store for my phone. is that version any good?
Play the remaster that comes out early next year! You'll love it.
hooo those discord notif sounds messed me up
After I finished the video and realized they were there it screwed with me hard
I've never actually seen someone who actually likes to actually say actually as much as this guy actually seems to actually like to actually say actually.
Then you actually better actually believe it because I will actually say it often
Actually.
I like the ps1 version the best. Respect to the sega M though.I just beat this yesterday. It’s seriously one of the best stories! This is in 2022 too!
One of my favorite coming of age stories. It really is a solid title at what it does ngl
I only ever played Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, and on the Playstation at that. One of my favorite gaming memories.
I wanted to like Lunar 2 but man was a tough one to get into. Just really difficult to play and get through for me
@@Kelphelp I hear Silver Star Story is even better than Eternal Blue. I gotta finish it some day.
Currently playing Lunar PS1 version on my modded PS1 classic and will play the Sega CD version of Lunar 2 after.
Hell yea dude. Its a definite journey for sure!
PSX version is pretty much the best one if you can't get the Sega CD one. PSP is a bit more polished and has more story though. Worst is GBA.
There wasn't much like it back in the day Working Designs was probably at their prime here.
Nostalgia goggles for sure as the PSP version was left in the dust by you two for no reason at all, it got spoken about for about 10 seconds and hubbs didn't even mention it. It is literally the definitive version, basically a love song to the original. Great video though!
No overworld map though. :(
BEST ENDING SEGMENT EVER
William Marston Ans it wasn't scripted either ;)
Ty for making this video! I might have missed it, but I'm trying to figure out if there is an official 2-disc version that was released for the PS1 port. I'm seeing that there is a 4-disc one and a 2-disc one, but I'm just trying to make sure I'm not getting scammed when buying the 2-disc version.
No thank you for watching! I dint remember if there was a four disc, I remember it being 2, I have to check my official copy to see
The extra two discs on the four-disc version are a soundtrack and a documentary.
having seen this now, im kinda sad i started off on the GBA version. Makes me want to play the first few versions before playing the PSP version
Where is the sega cd version?
Its in there dude. That's the Mega Drive title
Played the GBA version first and loved it, even though it felt minimal. Played the PSP version second and really enjoyed it, but didn't love the character design. Playing the PS1 version and I really like it, maybe my favorite version. Felt like a good full story, love the sprites and the fmvs.
Outstanding
seth duffey This means alot to me. ThankS so much for takin the time to watch the video man. Put lots of love into it.
Truth be told I am SUPER grateful we are finally getting the looooooooong awaited remasters of Silver Star and Eternal Blue complete (now if Golden Sun can just get same treatment and preferably not locked to Nintendo) I TRULY hope between both remastered play and getting to play like good old days that VA and music will be same golden score that was perfect and that they will include the Sega CD versions as well
I weirdly prefer random encounter. Sega CD version 4 Life
I want Harmony so bad! It looks amazing!
It plays pretty damn smooth too actually! Highly recomended for the PSP man.
I love Eternal Blue. The main character Hiro looks like an older version of Alex.
Never thought of it but makes sense ngl
@@Kelphelp Lemina Ausa is a direct descendant of Mia from the first game and you still have Nall/Ghaleon too.
