Mat is right, he just didn't explain it properly: If you want the "pretty mode", which indeed is what we are being sold and shown in trailers, THEN games only run at 30-ish FPS... it's only when you disable all the fancy visuals that you get beyond that FPS range. And that's what is indeed a major downside this generation... what we gamers want is pretty **and** 60 FPS, not either/or... but the PS5 Pro won't be able to deliver on that either. It's still going to be either highestr fidelity OR 60 FPS.
Agreed. Gears of war 5 looked great. Wild hearts had a good concept, but not quite enough optimization. Unfortunately, when we get to the point where all games can look amazing AND run equally well, there will be another issue. Almost all major corporations will most likely have a game with way too much visual clutter to truly enjoy.
Thats up to the developers not the console itself.. a simple game like 'the Turist' can run at 8k60FPS while very complex like Alan wake 2 barelly reach 1440p at 60 fps.
The idea the current gen consoles would run native 4k60 on anything but less graphically demanding games was always laughable. You need a $2k+ PC to run graphically demanding games at native 4k60, they were never going to hit that performace on $500 consoles. Not without a graphical hit, use of upscaling, or both.
@@IceBlueLugia Yeah! I have a R7 5700X and a RX 6700XT. I have to use FSR to get a solid 60FPS in BG3 @Max settings using 1440p. Starfield, I have to turn things down to medium and use FSR to get close to 60FPS @ 1440P.
The only reason I would want it is for VR but they would need to triple down on software for me to consider it. That said the psvr2 is truly amazing and I'm primarily a Xbox/PC person with a PS5 for God of War

The Series X is selling for only $350 right now, so if their next model has specs similar the the X, just without the disc drive, they'd be able to sell it at $300-$350 I'd imagine. With their higher end model going for $500 again. Also. The Series S was selling pretty decent at $299. Of course, sales picked up when the price dropped, but still.

The difference with this generation of consoles is last gen is still very much alive and kicking so they have two generations of consoles that are still doing their thing. I mean the PS4 Pro is still a powerful console and the games on that system still run pretty good and look pretty good and the more powerful last gen consoles aren't even that old.

Just get a pc xD! 500 is already way too much for a console. I got my series X with 220 euro discount. It was black friday and its a refurbished model from microsoft itself. I would never pay 500 or more for a console ever again!

Much of the sales success for the Series S is due to the lack of availability for the Series X. I don't know anyone that wanted the Series S. They all wanted the Series X, but gave up on trying to get one and had to settle. In terms of the next version, I would expect Microsoft to actually cut it down even further and make it more of a Game Pass gateway, and less of a standalone console.
Series S is great for casual players or for people getting back into gaming. I have friends that are very happy with their Series S after years of not gaming, or in one case, starting to get out of just Nintendo consoles. Series S and GamePass is great for those players.
I will skip ps5 pro, because i already own a ps5. I actually think sony should pour way more resources and development into ps6 than the ps5 pro, i watch digital foundry (a lot), to be honest im a tech/gamer head
@15:55 Matt is 100% correct, and the Switch is proof of that. I still have friends that are rocking PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One because they are still getting games on those platforms (for now). I usually find myself in the same mindset as Austin, and often need to "recalibrate" myself when it comes to understand the lack of importance most people place on the latest and greatest. Yes if you're a DF viewer, you're probably going to give a shit about the experience and eye candy the latest kit will give you, but for everyone else, nope.
I use 1080p tv so I could care less for 4k or 8k BUT I will NOT go back to 30fps... 1080p\60fps must be a minimum for all ps5 games releasing until the ps6. Im with Matt he's realistic and Austin is... Idk
From what I understand, the PS5 Pro will essentially help out "Pretty Mode" in games by using a bit newer architecture on the GPU side (especially with ray tracing tech). It won't really help get games FPS up much more in performance modes though because the CPU is basically the same, and the higher frame rates are often a CPU bottleneck rather than strictly a GPU bottleneck. The APU for the PS5 Pro is doing a bit of a PC-build faux pas by not balancing the CPU and GPU power (an extreme case would be an Intel Core i3 and an RTX 4080). But because most console folks are used to (and by default for most games) 30 FPS high fidelity mode, it makes sense for them to do that. I'm happy to be proven wrong of course, as I'm a huge fan of high FPS gaming for many genre's.

4k @ 60fps was what PS5 & Xbox Series X were made & promised; that’s the argument, living on hope that “the mid-gen upgrade will solve that problem” is the thought of a sucker because the first console of that gen release was suppose to do exactly that..
For the past month at Costco, you can easily get a Series X with 2 controllers for 429. It's the best deal that's ever happened on a console at Costco after working their for 12 years. Plenty to buy and a great deal FYI.

The PS5 Pro's gpu clock target being 230-233mhz slower than standard PS5 (I've seen the PS5 gpu clocks listed as 2230 and 2233mhz) feels unlikely due to potential back compat issues. You'd think that the clocks would at least be uniform. Retained clocks would put Pro's gpu right at 32 Tflops. And, if the apu is on 4nm, along with the Zen 2 cpu being capable of 4.4ghz on all cores boost then retaining the same gpu clocks sounds more than feasible. While the Pro would have 2 more cu's than the 7700XT they'd be clocked ~12.5% slower w/the gpu having ~9% less compute. I understand that the 7700XT is a 245w card. However, between the die shrink, refined RDNA 3.5, and the nature of the apu vs a discrete gpu, retained clocks still seems doable.

Uh... I bought a series S because the Series X was impossible to get here in Brazil. Not because it was the cheapest and more affordable, it was the only one available for purchasing at that time. Years later, now I'm a happy gamer with both my Series X and a PS5
I just want 4k60 to be the standard with ps5pro, and the devs will just choose what games that are already released get a 4k60 fps patch.....thats ALL i want with the pro especially since sony is putting the AI generation tech ( like dlss and frs or a form of frs) in the ps5pro then i dont doubt 4k60 and 1440p 120fps wont be possible..... i pray thats what they are aiming for....screw 8k just add good fps and we will be good
Native 4k has never been advertised. It’s on consumers to do the research, also extremely naive to expect publicly traded companies to not take advantage of uninformed customers.

I have a series x and I don't think it's underpowered. Could it home back gaming? I guess it could. But the developers job is to make the games run on the current consoles. I don't really care if my games are running in native 4k or uoscaled 4k. I probably wouldnt even really notice the difference of 30-60 fps. I still play games on my ps4 and enjoy them.
Me too. Hate spending $$$$$ for disappointment. I got my series S for $130 from Walmart and I’m waiting for the digital PS5 OG to go cheap as sub $300. Just my preference.
I have used consoles in the past but my pc that i have now is better then any console i had . It would be cool if they could create small things to run console discs in my pc . In the past i had a like box that i could play n64 games via my pc

I'm gonna disagree with Matt VEHEMENTLY. Every major game that has come out doing 4k30 instead of 4k60, gets hit with huge backlash. 60 frames is what is being demanded and a pro is what we expect to bring it. 4k is already a standard and upscaling it is already completed accepted. Frames is the main target

I feel like this generation of console XBOX Series/PS5 has not fully utilized its power. Games have been cross gen developed with XBOX One/PS5 as well as developed scaled for Series S. The hardware can produce some great games if developers could stretch their legs and not be tied to older hardware limitations.
I’ll go with the old “pc master race” meme and keep playing on pc while using the series x and switch as a sidedish. Only reason i have a series x is because of the backwards compat of all the previous gens. And the switch lets just say im addicted to pokemon. If im 100% fair i dont think i will get another gen xbox for a while unless the announce a very improved backward compat mode. I will buy new pc parts once in a while though.
I’m switching between fidelity and performance mode on Horizon Forbidden West (best looking game) and can’t tell the difference honestly. It all came down to developers.
I doubt Microsoft is planning on a console refresh so soon. They only recently officially closed the Acti-Blizzard deal and aren't necessarily flush with the kind of money the gaming division could easily budget towards an ad hoc "mid-cycle" competitor to Sony, regardless of whether a console branded "PS5 Pro" is released 2024/2025 or not. It'd be more likely that Series S or an even more trimmed version of that with a smaller form factor (Series...RS? S Slim?) and same or slightly lower price point would be promoted more heavily as the slim model until they recoup enough of their Acti-Blizzard money that they can actively go back to R&D of the pro/elite model hardware refresh (Series...XX? X+?).
I would not be surprised if sony decides to makes the digital games that the customers already paid for not accessible just like it's already happening with the digital movies that sony made an agreement with discovery due to the terms and conditions from discovery that sony agreed with. It sucks for the customers that chose the option to buy instead of the rent option for there digital movies since the customers already paid for the digital movies. The customers can't access the movies because sony agreed to the terms and conditions from discovery to not allow access movies that the customers paid out of pocket for when they so called "buy" the movie. Sony did not even say anything about refunding the money that the customers already paid for when they bought the digital movies. Even though google shut down stadia, they even offered refunds for the customers that bought the digital games from google stadia. Google is notorious for shutting down services but at least they provided an option for a refund for there customers. By going digital, the digital movies that affects the customers can also apply and affect in the same way for the digital movies and video games due to licensing agreements and drm. At least with the discs, the drm on the discs can be reversed engineered to remove the drm from the discs and remove the copy protected content from the discs just like it can be done with physical copies of movies whether the movies are 4k, blu ray and dvd discs. There can be an option remove the drm and copy protection from the video game discs since it already exist with movies with the compatible hardware and older firmware to remove the copy protection and drm from the discs. There were some games that I used to play on steam on pc that no longer exists. I can't find the same games that was removed from steam from other game libraries from gog games and g2a game libraries, the games disappeared liked they never existed. Luckily I have consoles that supports the physical copies of games but I had to buy the same games all over again that I lost from steam for my game consoles. That's why I prefer playing on consoles because of the support for physical copies of games that pc games no longer have. Most pc games support the newest versions of the operating system and are not backwards compatible with older operating systems when the older operating system is no longer supported and is discontinued. I still have games on discs that says games for windows that still works that I wanna play on the newest version of windows whenever the newest versions of windows comes out. Unfortunately, planned obsolescence made the games that I have on disc not compatible with the newer versions of windows by not supporting backwards compatible. The xbox series x is backwards compatible all the way back to original xbox and pc games on windows are not backwards when microsoft makes both the xbox for consoles and windows for gaming pcs. Microsoft decided to makes gaming on pc planned obsolescence route on windows for gaming instead of supporting older games and have backwards compatibility like the xbox series x. I bought the xbox series x due to backwards compatibility and my library of xbox games from the original xbox and the 360 games. I rather play and support the older games since they still work and not obsolete like newer digital games and software has expiration dates on pcs. I missed the era of the ps3 and the original xbox because you can still play the same games when they are no longer being supported and discontinued long term. With newer software and hardware coming out, the older products that still work that rely on an internet connection can be easily be bricked intentionally with software updates that the manufacturers choose to do so because they own the software that the consumers paid for.
True. That’s why I for example spend very little amount of $ on PS/xbox games. Not only I don’t own the content but It a sunk cost from the get go…and the resale value of the physical copy is a penny. Gamers want lower price point and will forever stay cheap. That how it is. There is no micro center where I'm located even though we have microsoft, apple, google and amazon. The best buy employee told me that they will still be selling the media players that play 4k, blu ray and dvd discs because there are customers that wanna play there own movies that the customers already have. When I heard that, it does not make complete sense. It's like the equivalent of buying tickets to a movie theater and when you go to the theater to go watch a movie, there is no display to watch the movie. Corporations are taking customer money thru subscription services since it's legal to take customers money thru subscription services when the customers paid for content that is already being removed due to licensing agreements so piracy should be legal so the customers can take back the money in return as a form of refund for the consumers.

60 FPS is the absolute minimum for me and I don't know anyone personally that disagrees with that. If I can only get 4K @ 30FPS, I'm going to 2K or 1080p I cannot even look at a game running at 30FPS anymore lol. Honestly, if you want visuals save your money for a PC
I always choose performance over fidelity. The graphics on spiderman 2 fidelity mode looks great. But 30 fps is terrible when my pc gets over 100 on most titles. I’ll take 60 frames and lose the pretty graphics

The funny thing about the Series S. Is the people who complain about it, aren’t the people who own it. The people who own a series s are just happy they could get a current gen console. Some people don’t care about the highest resolution and ray tracing. Or even 60fps. They just want to play the latest game with their friends. As a casual gamer, the series s hss hit all the right notes with me. Obviously, ps5 and series x is more powerful, but that little series s holds its own. I was never really into super duper graphics anyway. I just prefer to play descent games.

On PC I play all my games on the highest graphics settings at 30fps or higher. I value graphics and resolution more than fps. To be fair I only play turn based rpg which fps don’t really matter.
I have to disagree with Matt. I have always enjoyed gaming more on PlayStation. I bought a PS5 disk edition, because if it. I was not looking at what I could afford. If that was the case, I probably would not have gotten any console. I buy my consoles based off of enjoyment and entertainment. I am PlayStation all the way.

I use 1080p tv so I could care less for 4k or 8k BUT I will NOT go back to 30fps... 1080p\60fps must be a minimum for all ps5 games releasing until the ps6.

From what I understand, the PS5 Pro will essentially help out "Pretty Mode" in games by using a bit newer architecture on the GPU side (especially with ray tracing tech). It won't really help get games FPS up much more in performance modes though because the CPU is basically the same, and the higher frame rates are often a CPU bottleneck rather than strictly a GPU bottleneck.
The APU for the PS5 Pro is doing a bit of a PC-build faux pas by not balancing the CPU and GPU power (an extreme case would be an Intel Core i3 and an RTX 4080). But because most console folks are used to (and by default for most games) 30 FPS high fidelity mode, it makes sense for them to do that.
I'm happy to be proven wrong of course, as I'm a huge fan of high FPS gaming for many genre's.

The only reason I got the Series X over the Series S is because it's my BluRay player too, if I didn't need access to a disc drive for movies then I easily would've bought the 1TB Series S
4k @ 60fps was what PS5 & Xbox Series X were made & promised; that’s the argument, living on hope that “the mid-gen upgrade will solve that problem” is the thought of a sucker because the first console of that gen release was suppose to do exactly that..

For the past month at Costco, you can easily get a Series X with 2 controllers for 429. It's the best deal that's ever happened on a console at Costco after working their for 12 years. Plenty to buy and a great deal FYI.

The PS5 Pro's gpu clock target being 230-233mhz slower than standard PS5 (I've seen the PS5 gpu clocks listed as 2230 and 2233mhz) feels unlikely due to potential back compat issues.
You'd think that the clocks would at least be uniform. Retained clocks would put Pro's gpu right at 32 Tflops. And, if the apu is on 4nm, along with the Zen 2 cpu being capable of 4.4ghz on
all cores boost then retaining the same gpu clocks sounds more than feasible. While the Pro would have 2 more cu's than the 7700XT they'd be clocked ~12.5% slower w/the gpu having ~9%
less compute. I understand that the 7700XT is a 245w card. However, between the die shrink, refined RDNA 3.5, and the nature of the apu vs a discrete gpu, retained clocks still seems doable.

Uh... I bought a series S because the Series X was impossible to get here in Brazil. Not because it was the cheapest and more affordable, it was the only one available for purchasing at that time.

Native 4k has never been advertised. It’s on consumers to do the research, also extremely naive to expect publicly traded companies to not take advantage of uninformed customers.

I have a series x and I don't think it's underpowered. Could it home back gaming? I guess it could. But the developers job is to make the games run on the current consoles.
I don't really care if my games are running in native 4k or uoscaled 4k. I probably wouldnt even really notice the difference of 30-60 fps. I still play games on my ps4 and enjoy them.

You know, Austin has been sucking off PlayStation pretty hard all these years, but damn this is a different level of strokage. Advertising 1080 at 120 and 4K at 60 is still false advertisement if it cant provide it consistently. I feel like this generation of console XBOX Series/PS5 has not fully utilized its power. Games have been cross gen developed with XBOX One/PS5 as well as developed scaled for Series S. The hardware can produce some great games if developers could stretch their legs and not be tied to older hardware limitations.

I’ll go with the old “pc master race” meme and keep playing on pc while using the series x and switch as a sidedish. Only reason i have a series x is because of the backwards compat of all the previous gens. And the switch lets just say im addicted to pokemon. If im 100% fair i dont think i will get another gen xbox for a while unless the announce a very improved backward compat mode. I will buy new pc parts once in a while though.

I’m switching between fidelity and performance mode on Horizon Forbidden West (best looking game) and can’t tell the difference honestly. It all came down to developers.

I doubt Microsoft is planning on a console refresh so soon. They only recently officially closed the Acti-Blizzard deal and aren't necessarily flush with the kind of money the gaming division could easily budget towards an ad hoc "mid-cycle" competitor to Sony, regardless of whether a console branded "PS5 Pro" is released 2024/2025 or not. It'd be more likely that Series S or an even more trimmed version of that with a smaller form factor (Series...RS? S Slim?) and same or slightly lower price point would be promoted more heavily as the slim model until they recoup enough of their Acti-Blizzard money that they can actively go back to R&D of the pro/elite model hardware refresh (Series...XX? X+?).
They have made Series X cheaper, I purchased mine from Amazon UK last week for £349, when retail is £480!

I would not be surprised if sony decides to makes the digital games that the customers already paid for not accessible just like it's already happening with the digital movies that sony made an agreement with discovery due to the terms and conditions from discovery that sony agreed with. It sucks for the customers that chose the option to buy instead of the rent option for there digital movies since the customers already paid for the digital movies. The customers can't access the movies because sony agreed to the terms and conditions from discovery to not allow access movies that the customers paid out of pocket for when they so called "buy" the movie. Sony did not even say anything about refunding the money that the customers already paid for when they bought the digital movies. Even though google shut down stadia, they even offered refunds for the customers that bought the digital games from google stadia. Google is notorious for shutting down services but at least they provided an option for a refund for there customers. By going digital, the digital movies that affects the customers can also apply and affect in the same way for the digital movies and video games due to licensing agreements and drm. At least with the discs, the drm on the discs can be reversed engineered to remove the drm from the discs and remove the copy protected content from the discs just like it can be done with physical copies of movies whether the movies are 4k, blu ray and dvd discs. There can be an option remove the drm and copy protection from the video game discs since it already exist with movies with the compatible hardware and older firmware to remove the copy protection and drm from the discs. There were some games that I used to play on steam on pc that no longer exists. I can't find the same games that was removed from steam from other game libraries from gog games and g2a game libraries, the games disappeared liked they never existed. Luckily I have consoles that supports the physical copies of games but I had to buy the same games all over again that I lost from steam for my game consoles. That's why I prefer playing on consoles because of the support for physical copies of games that pc games no longer have. Most pc games support the newest versions of the operating system and are not backwards compatible with older operating systems when the older operating system is no longer supported and is discontinued. I still have games on discs that says games for windows that still works that I wanna play on the newest version of windows whenever the newest versions of windows comes out. Unfortunately, planned obsolescence made the games that I have on disc not compatible with the newer versions of windows by not supporting backwards compatible. The xbox series x is backwards compatible all the way back to original xbox and pc games on windows are not backwards when microsoft makes both the xbox for consoles and windows for gaming pcs. Microsoft decided to makes gaming on pc planned obsolescence route on windows for gaming instead of supporting older games and have backwards compatibility like the xbox series x. I bought the xbox series x due to backwards compatibility and my library of xbox games from the original xbox and the 360 games. I rather play and support the older games since they still work and not obsolete like newer digital games and software has expiration dates on pcs. I missed the era of the ps3 and the original xbox because you can still play the same games when they are no longer being supported and discontinued long term. With newer software and hardware coming out, the older products that still work that rely on an internet connection can be easily be bricked intentionally with software updates that the manufacturers choose to do so because they own the software that the consumers paid for.

True. That’s why I for example spend very little amount of $ on PS/xbox games. Not only I don’t own the content but It a sunk cost from the get go…and the resale value of the physical copy is a penny. Gamers want lower price point and will forever stay cheap. That how it is.

There is no micro center where I'm located even though we have microsoft, apple, google and amazon. I used to go to frys electronics before they shut down and no longer exists because they were cheaper than best buy and offer way more options than best buy and target combined. The best buy employee told me that they will still be selling the media players that play 4k, blu ray and dvd discs because there are customers that wanna play there own movies that the customers already have. When I heard that, it does not make complete sense. It's like the equivalent of buying tickets to a movie theater and when you go to the theater to go watch a movie, there is no display to watch the movie. Corporations are taking customer money thru subscription services since it's legal to take customers money thru subscription services when the customers paid for content that is already being removed due to licensing agreements so piracy should be legal so the customers can take back the money in return as a form of refund for the consumers.

60 FPS is the absolute minimum for me and I don't know anyone personally that disagrees with that. If I can only get 4K @ 30FPS, I'm going to 2K or 1080p I cannot even look at a game running at 30FPS anymore lol. Honestly, if you want visuals save your money for a PC
I always choose performance over fidelity. The graphics on spiderman 2 fidelity mode looks great. But 30 fps is terrible when my pc gets over 100 on most titles. I’ll take 60 frames and lose the pretty graphics

The funny thing about the Series S. Is the people who complain about it, aren’t the people who own it. The people who own a series s are just happy they could get a current gen console. Some people don’t care about the highest resolution and ray tracing. Or even 60fps. They just want to play the latest game with their friends. Not everyone is willing or able to spend as much money on it.
What console gamers really don’t want to hear. Is that consoles are holding PC gaming back. Consoles are budget gaming for the masses. However premium you want to believe your console is. It’s nothing compared to the highest in PC specs. You’re basically getting your console subsidized by a big corporation

Whether it's $600 or $650 is irrelevant. That's too damn much money for a video game console. At that price it better make my damn breakfast and wipe my ass when I take my morning dump. It's not a PC. I can buy an upgrade for my current system right now for $520 that will put me on better hardware than the PS5 pro will have AND will be a full on PC... and since Game Pass is a thing and SONY's putting some PS5 games on PC, show me where it makes any sense.
As a casual gamer, the series s hss hit all the right notes with me. Obviously, ps5 and series x is more powerful, but that little series s holds its own. I was never really into super duper graphics anyway. I just prefer to play descent games.

They add immersion and make aiming in shooters a lot better, respectively. Your argument would work if Microsoft had the most durable controllers or whatever but they really don’t. Constant reports of drift and other issues in both series controller and elite controller. Drift in a $150 controller is unacceptable. So they may as well improve their controllers in other ways if they aren’t gonna improve the sticks

On PC I play all my games on the highest graphics settings at 30fps or higher. I value graphics and resolution more than fps. To be fair I only play turn based rpg which fps don’t really matter.
I have to disagree with Matt. I have always enjoyed gaming more on PlayStation. I bought a PS5 disk edition, because if it. I was not looking at what I could afford. If that was the case, I probably would not have gotten any console. I buy my consoles based off of enjoyment and entertainment. I am PlayStation all the way.
