      I throughly enjoy your videos.
When I was younger (in my 20s), I would get away for at least a month every year.
I found a sweet spot 30 miles from Mt Shasta, CA USA.
I had to take old logging roads up to a small lake. (I could walk around the entire lake in about 20 minutes).
I would take all the food that I needed for the month, except for meat. Believe you me, after a month of trout every night for dinner, I was glad to get back to civilization to get a juicy hamburger 😊.
I saw a Forest Ranger usually once a month or so, but other than that, I never saw another person.
I was happy as a clam.
      Wildlife abounded.
Once in awhile I’d kill a squirrel, rabbit, etc.
To keep some of my food cool, I’d put it in water proof containers and put it into the lake.
I was so high up in the mountains that the snow didn’t completely melt until mid August.
I had a cab over camper in the bed of my F150. I always used a fire pit to cook my food.
      I greatly miss those days.
Now that my wife and I are getting older, our ideas of “roughing it” is a resort close to the lakes and hiking trails that we choose to go to for vacations.
Keep your great videos coming !

My father used to say, “When you find a good teacher, sit down and learn from them. It doesn’t matter what they are teaching, because you never know when some obscure piece of knowledge might come in handy. A good teacher is worth the time and effort.” You are a good teacher Tristen. I have a newer vehicle with super cameras front and back, but I watched this entire video because you are so organized, articulate, and pleasant….you’re a joy to learn from! I put my ice in 2 jugs with wide mouths and never had soggy food. Wrapped the cooler with insulation and a 7 lb bag of ice lasted a week and the water was clean so I used it for washing clothes. I became super efficient with resources in the desert

    • @coachwendy5618
      @coachwendy5618 2 года назад +3

I also do these types of things for cooling, but we bought a portable fridge about a year or so ago and it's great as long as you have power to run it. Ours is a cheaper less insulated model so it's not very efficient. Best used on trips while driving. There are better models that are more expensive and when traveling on overnight trips like Tristan does, a good efficient fridge is much better than a cooler because the fridge can be used in warmer climates better than huge bulky coolers. When traveling over extended periods of time, the frozen water bottles melt and you need to find ice which may be too bulky for a smaller cooler. You just need a good solar battery (I prefer not to call any of them generators because they're technically an energy storage unit) and panel to keep it running overnight. Since the solar panel and battery are being used to power other devices, they're versatile and worth the investment. If you're not on long excursions during the summer months, a cooler will work too in some climates. I don't camp during the summer months so it doesn't matter that much to me either way.

@Vagabond Life What type of jugs did you use? Also, to be clear, did you put all of the ice inside the jugs and place the food inside the cooler surrounded by the jugs? Did placement of the jugs matter - top or bottom of the cooler? Any issues with the weight of the jug smashing the food?

    • @thisvagabondlife7132
      @thisvagabondlife7132 2 года назад +4

@@Gwen3344 they were just big clear plastic wide mouth jugs. I placed the food on top of the jugs and all the ice was inside the jug. Cheap plastic jugs kind of like the big containers the nuts and trail mix come in with squared sides.

This video was significant for me - I have an older car and a backup camera would be extremely useful. I recently was in a rental car and got stuck on a very steep residential hill in Victoria, B.C. that had a sheer 10-15 foot drop on one side. Absolutely no place to turn or even do a 3 point turn and barely enough room for the car on the pavement itself. The only way out was backing out. It was extremely nerve racking! Thank goodness my rental had a backup camera or I would have had to phone for assistance. Even with the backup camera it was a sticky business, but I finally made it. I'm definitely going to check out this product!

Just a thought on safety: you spoke of the backup camera showing where the edge of the dropoff is when you are turning around on a narrow road. I was taught that you should always put the nose of the vehicle toward the dropoff when turning in a situation like that. Our brains are less well calibrated to interpret camera images than direct eye contact. I love my backup camera, but I'd rather have the greatest hazard in front of me.

When I upgraded from an 05 Prius to a 17 Prius Prime, was the first time I had a backup camera, radar cruise control, and TPMS. Personally I could do without the TPMS, as I keep good track of my tire pressure. But once I became used to a backup camera, I almost became a menace to society when driving my older car. I'd put the car in reverse and look at the dashboard instead of my mirrors. Likewise with adaptive radar cruise, once I got completely used to the car taking care of maintaining separation distance, never running into the car in front of me, and even braking to a stop, I had to be very attentive when driving the older car, or I'd end up closing in on the car in front of me and forgetting that I had to do something about it manually to keep from tailgating and/or hitting them. I never got into a scary situation from it, as I do automatically spot danger and act upon it, but it's surprising how quickly you can become dependent upon new technology once it lulls you into not having to think about something.
So my main advice, would be to pay really close attention to which car you're in, if one has the camera centered and the other doesn't. I think I'd actually mount it to the bumper or to something in the hitch receiver, to center the lens, rather than deal with the off-center lines.

I used to pull the fuse but learned I didn’t have to. But don’t forget to open the driver door after taking out the key, you WILL kill the battery.

We own a 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6. It will soon be 12 years old, but it only has 103K pampered miles.
We never take it or my wife’s 19 Outback on serious off road trips. We’ll use our 11 Ranger 4X4 for that.
I know our Rav and Outback are capable but they are mainly used for on road use.
We get 4-5 feet of snow every winter and live in the mountains.
We live on a private road which we have to plow and maintain. The county road which we have to use to get into town (5 miles away), is the last road to get plowed in the winter. So it’s a must to have a 4WD or an AWD.
My Rav does quite well in 4WD but I have to admit that the Outback does much better than my Rav.
I will miss the 269 hp V6 in my Rav when it wears out. I’ll probably be in my mid 70s when it’ll be time to replace my Rav. ( since retiring I only drive about 5K miles a year).
Hopefully by the time the Rav wears out, Subaru will have hybrids for the Outback and the Forester. If not I’ll buy a Venza or a Lexus hybrid.
Who knows, by that time the Dumbocrat’s will have us back to Horse and Buggy.

I can't properly drive without my back camera since my rig is fully built out in the cargo area. It's an always-on camera, which is what I need. It acts as my rear-view mirror (and that's also where it mounts). It also has a front-facing camera (you can have dual screens or either/or screens). It doesn't serve as a "backup camera" since it doesn't provide those guide lines, but I'm okay with that. Being in my Suboverland, I had to constantly plug it in and unplug it, which eventually caused failure. The DC outlet literally came out of the dash at one point. I now have the camera plugged it into a gadget that stays plugged into the DC port and has an on/off switch that I toggle instead of having to plug/unplug the camera every time I use it.

It had a line to connect to backup lights but was a pain as when you wanted to do small movements to align a hitch, it turned on and off, so added a manual switch. Crappy, low res video but good enough to hitch up a trailer and camera was $10.
There are wireless cameras that will work with your phone too to save an extra screen.

I wasn't sure where you were going with this, but it makes a lot of sense. When I am creeping along a trail in my 2012 Yukon 4WD Hybrid the hood is so high I cannot see directly in front of me, especially coming up over a rise. I just happen to have a Garmin BC40 license plate backup camera from a previous vehicle so that is going on the front now. Rather than use a separate monitor though you can just switch use a Garmin GPS which I still find much better than phone products for long trips. I installed switched outlets to use for my GPS, wireless phone charger, etc. since my outlets are not switched off with the vehicle like other domestic vehicles.

If you're looking for a real basic plug and play setup, COSTCO had a deal for about $100. (Micro-) solar panels and camera are integrated into the rear license plate frame and display is powered by aux cabin plug. Really useful -- and the only glitch I've had is a low power situation with the solar powered Bluetooth. The autosleep function of the display doesn't always engage -- you'll be tooling down the road half an hour after the start of your trip and the display shows freeway traffic behind you. Time to disconnect the demanding display!

I could have used one of these on my 1987 Nissan Pathfinder when I was driving on the Lolo Trail and Pass (between Lolo Hot Springs and Lewiston) on my way from Chicago to Alaska. It's a very rough, narrow road and in 9 hours of driving on it, I encountered three cars heading the opposite direction. I had to back up several hundred yards in one instance to have enough room to allow the other car to pass. Not fun.

Having a front camera is an interesting idea. Some of those BLM roads are tricky. I also decided to put exterior lights on the back of my Rav (that way, in the dark, I can see where I'm going). Great video, and you're giving me more ideas!

yeah, once you have a back up camera, becomes a "gotta-have" accessory. I would like to mount one so I can see if the rocks under the car are going to hit my skid plate or bottom of the car. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks so much for posting this! I’m in the market for a swing-arm hitch for a mobility scooter, which will block the backup cam on my 2018 RAV4. Hoping this could be attached to the cargo basket somehow so I can back into parking spots without hitting anything! 😊 Thanks, again!

I had an earlier autovox which stopped working within 6 months but the company took care of me. I think they had issues with rainforest like conditions on the coast of Oregon where I live. The replacement they sent failed too so they upgraded to the newest version last January. So far so good, need to get through a winter again to know for sure. I think I paid return shipping for at least one, overall I'd say customer service was very good and the unit works for me in my 2006 sprinter. Oh yeah, I'd probably recommend against the solar panel, I use my camera 3 or 4 times a week and it never reaches a full charge in sunlight. At least on the one I have.
If you don't mind running a wire and need a stereo upgrade to a touchscreen that can pair with your phone for like music and audible, Amazon has those for around $130 and they come with a backup camera. I'm really digging that upgrade in gear.

Tristan I have the same car as you (2011 RAV4) and have wanted a backup camera for a while. And, like you, I've been put off by the wiring and disassembly required with a wired camera. The camera you reviewed may be perfect for me. I wonder if you considered mounting it on the bumper instead of with the license plate - that would resolve the problem of the view being off center.

I thought you would be talking about tow bars and tow hitches. I like to have all of my vehicles to be able to be towed (flat) with 4-wheels on the pavement. And have both a tow bar and tow hitch. It just makes life so easy when issues happen.

LOL! When you said 'backup camera' I immediately thought of a secondary camera to use if your primary camera failed. It took a few moments to realize you were referring to a rearview camera for your car.

Wait you can turn the traction control off in your car? That button in mine is for Hill descent control. I would love to be able to turn the traction control off though but the hill descent has come in handy. I've done some pretty significant off-road in my little RAV and it's got the Battle scars to show it. They are way more capable than people would assume.

Well that was an appropriate gear cover! Been looking at a front camera .. actually a backup camera that I can use on my Crosstrek .. have the backup camera on that but I don't use it much .. I don't trust it. On my old Explorer I get out and look when I back but I sure would like something in the front as I'm climbing stuff over coming over a rise. 🤠

Good info! I would add that with all the driving done, a dash and rear cam would be helpful in the case of an accident. If one pays for the yearly Best Buy Total Tech services, they will install anything in your car for free, regardless of where you purchased it.

I have a Jeep Wrangler and have the same issue with the offset rear license plate which sucks since I bought it to help me back up to my camper. I ended up zip tying the camera eye to the hitch mount. Had I seen this before, I would have looked more into this one since I had to wire a 12v plug to the camera as to not hard wire it into my Jeep.
