- Hello! I'm an outdoor adventure photographer and I've been living on the road full-time for the last three years, since June 2018. For the first two years, I lived in a 2000 Toyota 4Runner, and I've been in a 2005 Toyota Sequoia from summer of last year. I posted my first simple Sequoia build video in December, and have since completely redone the entire camper. So here's a tour! Thanks for watching.

Also I totally forgot to mention that I have a vacuum cleaner and a first aid kit, haha. They live behind the fridge under the seat
How much did the suv cost and how much was the build?
So freaking cool man! How do you manage to afford??😭❤️
This is awesome! Do you have a video on how you afford to live on the road or sell your photography?
You got a beautiful heart Nathatwise.
do you have a link to those storage bins on your roof rack?
I've been studying van life for year's and this is one of the best minimalist builds I've seen! Great job!
means a lot, thanks man!
Definitely ranks in the top 20
Not sure he qualifies as a minimalist with all the stuff in his roof garage but the build out is certainly beautiful and minimal!
Agree with the original comment, an amazing build out!
Wut lmao
Love the wholesomeness in the appreciation of your coffee mug and coaster. 😊
thanks for watching claire! gotta appreciate the little things :)
Stumbled across this video/channel, didn’t think I’d stay for the whole video but I decided “this kid is pretty cool, I think I’ll hang out with him for a sec and check out his sweet SUV camper”. Well done, friend. This energy is a whole independent vibe. ✌️
thanks mallory :) glad you enjoyed it!
You had me with all of those zippered organizing bags, but then your linen joy sealed the deal. Adorable! Thank you for your generous spirit. Gorgeous design- practical and beautiful.
I love the fact that you use every tiny spaces efficiently without creating an overcrowded look. Your mom must be so proud how you keep your space tidy and organized. I prefer the bed unfolded and ready for sleep. It gives an even more homey feel. Great job!
thank you! having every tuck away neatly was definitely important to me
Gave me so neat ideas.
I totally agree, I'm like, I would be so proud of my kiddos (both boys) if there as meticulous. One son has a 4Runner and loves to camp. Absolutely sharing your videos with him he would be very interested in how you've got it all set up.. personally I have a Nissan Armada and will be doing my first SUV RV trip in May. It will be for a long weekend and I will meet a friend halfway between her State and mine. I have some things setup but I'm not doing any major renovations before I actually try sleeping in it. I will bring the things I need and see how it goes and do it in steps and stages. I also think I will do a RUclips from a 62 year old single gals perspective period is a lot of women in overlanding and camping and we learn a lot from each other.
Thanks again I learned a lot from you
ive watched literally hundreds of van/suv/car conversion vids & this is hands down the best!!!
no way! thank you 😊
Helo. I agree 1000% I am sold. I have been watching so many of this video and I love your the most
Agreed. Same here. I want to do the same on my Forester Wilderness. Love to see the floor plan/design. Thank you for sharing.
I also agree. You have included everything, from everything you use (with links), great ideas, things to watch out for, gorgeous scenery, wonderful photography, to your actual feelings about solo SUV camping, which I find invaluable - it’s hands down wonderful. Keep up the great work please. Well done!!’
Absolutely!!
"Thanks for existing" haha, Love it man! such a clean and minimal set up. Also the new rack and roam cases look great
thanks drew! now come to washington so we can hang and i can give you a little print lol
That is a nice sleeping platform / couch hybrid. Very functional.
That moment when the water jug fits perfectly in the back. So satisfying! This is a really inspiring build.
thanks randy!
😍MY goodness this is the most organized car I've ever seen a guy have! Great job👏👏👏
i’m trying my best!
Lol 😂 - I love it.
Lol! When your water jug fit so perfectly under the bed, it made my OCD very happy!
Awesome setup!
“I feel like if you’re going to live in your car, you have to have fairy lights.”
Yes my man, yes
i am so very glad you agree 🧚♂️
When on the road, my favorite piece of cooking equipment is a pressure cooker. Mine is small and can be used on any type of stove. As a vegetarian, I love being able to cook from soaked dried beans in just 20 minutes. It also does rice or other grains super fast, so it saves on fuel. It stacks right into my regular skillet for easy storage. I use the 2.7 Quart Fissler Vitaquick Pressure-Skilet with Stainless Steel Induction, which has been easy to use. It makes plenty of food for two people. It has really added to the types of meals I can make while traveling. My husband and I are towing an R-Pod, but we like to be off-grid, so extending our fuel and water usage for longer stays is helpful.
Nice
Thank you for this wonderful tip!
There’s something about photographers … you are so innovative, organise and tidy (in the best way!) this is a fantastic build. I would say you and Thomas Heaton, a landscape photographer from the UK, I have made my favourite artists vans. I am a landscape painter and I sometimes dream of doing something like this but I’m getting a bit old. (70 this year)
I can live vicariously through you guys!
Do you ever get bothered by bears? I ask because I noticed you have fruit stored in one of your cubbies and I worry about food inside the van. I am not curious for no reason at all… I do wonder about that problem if I ever decided to go landscape, painting on my own and live in a van.
I’ve seen a lot of setups for living in a vehicle and I gotta say, yours is THE most elaborate. Very well put together. My hat’s off to you and your buddy for building this
Yo random thought but if you’re ever just bored at camp looking to pass some time I highly suggest buying a kendama, they are super fun and really challenging and take a long time to get good at, but still very fun to play around with, I suggest a Grain theory or Terra they are handmade
Only a "Capricorn" could be that organized! I'm trying to build something similar to your build with a 2018 Jeep Renegade. I've been all over the web, and I must say that, yours is by far, the best build out there! Hands down! You've given me a ton of ideas and I pray I could do your rig justice with my own. shout out to Drew Simms as well, both of you a huge inspiration to Overlanding and outdoor adventure photography.
All the best.
ha! we are pretty organized. and thanks man! that means a lot, so many cool rigs out there. drew is awesome, happy to know him 🙏 he inspires me a lot too
Only a Capricorn can be well organized??
I wish!!
I have seen dozens of conversions on youtube, yours is simply the best, good job.
ah thanks man! so glad you enjoy it
Wow, your interior design of the van is so space-efficient! What a stunning design👍👍
thanks abby!
You thought about the little things. Love the use of corks.
I do have a question.
Can you set the bed up while in the vehicle?
Like if it's raining or you don't want people see you're getting ready to sleep in it.
Great suv conversion.
Wow! I woulda have never guessed how much room you have.love your set up
When I saw that this was 42 minutes long I was like, Yeeessss! Big Fan. Your first video was a huge influence on my Prius 'build'. Thanks for sharing. I also love the puzzle aspect of creating my car camper, and I'm an Aquarius.
by far my longest video haha! happy to hear that. i guess puzzle pierces appeal to all signs 🤓
They speak to Capricorn too 😄
It didn't feel like 42 minutes at all!
"Can you tell I'm a capricorn?" haha! Called out. Deriving extreme pleasure in the form of aesthetic organisation and purpose
Holy smokes! I’ve been watching vanlife videos for over five years and I have never seen sooooo much stuff packed into such a tiny space!!!
I wish I was this handy. The build portion still intimidates me so much. Yours is amazing!
There are hard small storage containers (simular size as laptop) with holes in them also simulating to wicker or straw braid pattern. Use the top on underside of laptop on your lap or wherever & to container for whatever else. It will allow it to breath & release heat. Blessings from NYC Aspiring Nomad 💞
WOW!! What a sight!!! The sounds, smells & looks of Nature at its finest!!
thanks for watching!
Very neat. You are the first man I saw who actually makes bed with linen and tucks it under the bed. Impressive. Thanks for sharing. Safe and happy trip!
Amazing build, really like how simple but well thought out it is! The fan was a great addition too! I think you have the gift of organising, I've not seen a SUV set up so well.
Secure your snake plant while on the move, a sudden halt could sent it flying which could cause it to break a window or injure you
What an amazing home you have. I love bags as well. The fact that you are a photographer is awesome! You not only get to travel and see so much of America but you get to film it as well! I love everything about your build and especially the scenery! Great job in the planning process and best of luck in your adventures.
I said a very sincere and spontaneous "Wow" when I saw that. Outstanding!
hi nathaniel i don't generally comment on videos i see, but your build and genuine attitude is a breath of fresh air on youtube. congratulations and can't wait to view your other videos.greetings from wales
thanks a ton graham! so happy you enjoyed it, i’m excited to be here
I agree with your point about not needed some crazy kitted out overlanding setup to go on some great adventures. A capable baseline vehicle and some good tires goes a long way.
You are my hero, dude… you are so grateful for the small things. I’m so happy that your water fit in that little spot. Good stuff! Thank you for giving people encouragement. We all need that- especially now. :)
just started living in my suv and the fan you suggested has been amazing and like you said, it doesn't drain my powerbank at all really. thanks!
heck yeah! glad you enjoy it man
I have a fj cruiser built similar for camping and I also enjoy the puzzle aspect of it. Tetris came in handy.
Yes !!!! Dude thank you for adding the hobbies !! It is super important!
it really is!
Nothing better than the Bitterroot Valley .
Great job on this build.
I'm glad you said that cuz I have a 20 year old van that I purchased getting it fixed now
Wow, what a fabulous build, you really knew what you needed for all of your gadgets and comfort. Thanks for sharing your home with us.
thank you!
The best, the most functional, the cleanest, and you have a houseplant! It does not matter where your ideas originated, it only matters that you implemented them with style.
thank you :)
Nathaniel you are adorable! I love that you have such an appreciation for making things “homelike”. Your parents did a good job! Be safe and so glad you are out there loving life!
I’m always amazed at how creative people are with SUV’s and vans and buses!
I can’t get enough of this video, this build, the beauty of your surroundings, how funny and charming you are while you give us the tour… really my hat is off to you and Mason, the ingenuity is so inspiring. Fantastic video. Stay safe and God bless.
thanks for watching :) was a fun one to film!
Love your coffee set up, it's perfect 💕 and thankyou, this is the first time I've seen how the solar plugs into a battery. If I could like this twice I would! 💖
Man oh man!! I have been waiting for this tour video for so long and finally you posted it. Felt super happy and calm after watching it. I just love your content and like you as a person (someone can say that I don’t even know you but nevermind). Hope you’re healthy and doing well. Lots of love and peace.🔆
thanks so much for watching it! glad you enjoyed, and hope you're doing awesome too 😊
Perfect build and exceptional use of storage. Very impressive! Such a wise soul ✨. Thank you so much for sharing this video! Thank you so much for showing people that you do not need a 200K vehicle to live full-time in. You rock 🎸!
Love your upgrade and clean organized video! the scenery was awesome too! Thanks for the viewing of all!
thanks for watching jodie 😊
Now That's What I Call compact. I just found your channel and I was thinking about taking off in my Jeep Liberty which is quite a bit shorter than your Sequoia but if I take my passenger seat out I would be able to stretch out, plus I have a little dog and I think she would need a little room also although she would like the sleeping pad that I have because she wouldn't be able to fit on it and she loves sleeping with me. Pee pad I have also folds up into a chair. This video has given me much food for thought and I thank you for that. Currently I'm living in a three-bedroom two-bath home which is a lot to consolidate down to a Jeep Liberty. I will check out some more of your videos. Thanks again for the video and have a great day and stay safe. Also don't forget to stay vigilant!
thanks so much for watching terry! i was in a third gen 4runner before this rig, it was quite small! very doable :) best of luck to you
The amount of time and care you put into this shows! Great rig, great setup, you thought of everything!
Amazing amount of items tucked into this car. Being a "bag lady", wonderful organization. Very creative.
So impressed with your organizing and figuring where everything goes. I did see your video with the metal frame. Both are really well designed. You seem to appreciate having nice things around you in your vehicle (linen duvet, plant).
As a backpacker/backwoods dweller, this is the build I've been looking for, thanks for all the information and inspiration! A lot of these car builds (while being so cool and exciting and often even beautiful!) sometimes didn't contain the "cool, clever gear" factor. LOVE that luggage rack.
Cool build. Experience has taught me to avoid an elevated bed unless absolutely necessary. Sitting up space in bed makes such a profound difference of in terms of "normalcy" that I sacrifice any under bed storage.
thanks man. yeah, that's why we built the platform so short actually. i'm able to sit up. i also have a really tall suv though
Best ZEN build.. it has dawned on me from watching a lot of car builds.. the smaller the area.. the less ‘CLUTTERED’ it should be.. really beautiful and easy on the eyes👍
You make me want to live in an suv again. Also that is one lucky squirrel audience
you should 🤓 you are the OG SUV lifer, learned a lot from you
You have such a cool van. And, it has more space and amenities than an SUV. Just curious as to why you would want to go back to an SUV? 😎
This is the most helpful SUV build I’ve seen so far! I started carlife in my 2001 Nissan Pulsar SEDAN (guys; I don’t advise it, but it was still FREEDOM!), now I’m thinking about building out my 2000 RAV4 Edge and looking for inspiration to do it 🥰
Grateful, thank you so much for sharing!
U r the most organised person I had seen ... I totally love ur vlogs
thank you!
I've watched a ton of car camping builds and this one is of the best! Greetings from Russia!
thanks for looking!!
I’ve watched lots of builds and I have to say this is one of the best uses of a small space I’ve seen. Very inspiring, well done
One of the best van life builds I've ever seen ... thanks for sharing!
thanks for lookin!
One of the best conversion tours on RUclips, and I love your setup. I own a Roadtrek, but watching your tour certainly demonstrates you can make a very nice “home” in a truck or SUV. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Kat!
Nathaniel, I enjoyed your tour and was impressed with your gentle, thankful and respectful demeanor toward everything, every help and all the feedback you received. Your food choices reflect a simple non stressful way of being. I hope you are a happy soul capturing images of God's wonders for all of us to enjoy. Thank you for sharing your world with us. Blessings to you. 💚☮️
Your usv is my favorite! Practical and stylish! Kalita wave 155 is really good one 😊
thank you! and yes agreed ☕️
Your space is beautiful. I want to Overland next Summer. I’ve been watching videos for inspiration. What I’m aware of straight away is how quickly possessions become burdens. I want to be as comfortably minimal as possible. Something similar to your set up would be incredible! Thank you for your video and providing me with hope that traveling in the car doesn’t have to be complete chaos.
I appreciate the build and sharing with us. I really enjoyed watching this. Despite almost being 45 minutes long, I watched and enjoyed the whole thing.
thanks a ton cory 🙏
45 minutes long??
It went so fast!!
I really enjoyed your video. I have family in that area of Montana . My grandparents homesteaded 25 miles from Ft. Benton, Mt. out in the prairie in 1916. I was able to visit the homestead in 2000. Was a highlight in my life. 🙂
Tetris Master! Love how you've organised everything into bags too. Such an efficient build. So cool when things happen to fit in spaces you didn't originally plan.
I wish I was a minimalist... I'm still culling things in my van after living in my full-time for a year and a half. Your video has inspired me to really try to make my space neater and more organised. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I can definitely tell that you’re a Capricorn! I am as well. You are so organized and neat. It was so satisfying to see all of your pockets and nooks! Have fun enjoying life and nature and be safe!
Totally mind blown!! Your build and style are amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing behind the scenes and appreciate you creating and sharing this content. I've been currently trying to decide about taking my freelance show on the road and whether I should get a pull behind camper or just live out of my 4runner so this was extremely insightful!!!!
I just bought a 97' mountaineer that I'm dreaming about converting into a stealth camper so I can do more backpacking trips! I love everything about your set up: the roof, the coffee kit/ kitchen setup, bed/lounge, ..I'm stealing all the ideas hahah!
I watched this yesterday evening. Preparing my morning coffee thought about you popping through your sunroof like a Wack-a-Mole to check the day. ☕️🌤
hahaha
"if you're gonna live in you car, you have to have fairy lights" felt that in my soul i love ur videos aaaa
Great video, Nathaniel. Really enjoyed the walk through of the new build, and it's given me a lot of ideas for my own SUV build. I love the efficiency and optimization hacks too - so thanks for sharing all the details. It's been fun to see you develop content and make your channel what it is. Thanks for creating and sharing!
thanks a ton kate! glad you enjoyed it
Very nice. I've lived in my van for 8 years and loved how you sit your van up and explained how you looked at it like a puzzle when you made it.
I love your set up. So organized. This is so encouraging.
thanks 😊
Just getting into this lifestyle as a hobby with wife. Really appreciate all the great ideas.
Hey Nathaniel, really enjoyed this detailed long-form walkthrough. Thanks for that that shout out to the Prius camper tribe too
thanks gabriel 🙏 i respect the prius tribe
This is the best sequoia conversion I’ve seen so far. I just bought a 2005 and am outfitting it. I will stay in it on occasion instead of a hotel. I was already planning a folding kids mattress from ikea and I think the folding mattress is great advice. I’m planning on just putting plastic bins and then something flat on top to make a sleeping platform. Actually I was thinking of getting two folding tables from the junkyard from a first generation CRV and put them on top of the bins. I’ll keep the second row seats.
I just gave up my car camper for a 22’ camper, now I miss the car again, your build is beautiful!
come back to car life!! jk. i'll bet that extra space is quite nice
@@NathanielWise just gives me more room for junk 😂 it’s a huge step up from my Honda Fit though!
Yes, you are bag crazy! But SOOO necessary to keep EVERYTHING at quick and handy access! Without such organization WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I packed my bins but I see I should follow suit. Sure would make things a whole heck of a lot easier!!🤗 Thanks!! BTW, I have NEVER seen SO much packed in such little space! Totally ubreal!! WOW! As an organizer you have tremendous amount of talent! You may be a photographer but you sure have another gravely needed marketable talent for us nomads! I have a safari with not near as much of what you have!!
thanks for watching mikki! organization keeps me sane in such a tiny space haha!
Looks great! I have the 2nd Gen Sequoia and almost complete with my Overland build. Things are coming along nicely. Love seeing these different builds
Thank you Nathaniel for posting your tour. Been waiting since I saw u and your buddy doing that build off grid. I was so impressed that you and your buddy were able to have the supplies you needed, and NOT need to make impromptu trips to the hardware store like me. When I'm working on the smallest of projects, we usually make trips back and forth to the hardware store. Let me know if you all had to make those back/forth trips to the hardware store for things you may have forgotten.
Stay safe out there, and enjoy your life.~Cheers...
i was surprised we didn't need anything else either haha! mason is a great planner
Wow! I really enjoyed that. Full of great ideas and smart products. I didn't catch heater, ac, potty, shower/hygiene situations other than shaving and outdoor solar shower. SUV and truck builds don't tend to be homey like van builds so I appreciated details like the guitar, linen bedding, and plant! Snake plants help purify the air though I like Golden Pothos even better for that. This video gave me an awesome dream about the beach. Wishing you happy travels.
Wow, good job. Still high quality and comfortable. Like those unbreakable dishes. I think my favorite part is that you can climb through the sunroof and sit up top without putting shoes on. Just wake up and climb outside. Montana looks beautiful. That’s gonna be one of the first places I go once I get a more reliable vehicle to travel with. Pretty far from Pennsylvania with my current setup. Soon.
thank you! i love those dishes haha. and yes the sunroof escape hatch is so nice. montana is incredible, definitely worth the long drive!
This is the best I have watched. So many things packed neatly and you know exactly where they are. Wow so neat and clean and wonderful. This is the best. For others watch this and get some ideas. Really youu utilize every space. Great ! excellent. God bless you.
thanks betty! glad you enjoyed it
This was a awesome build, I’ve seen organized tiny spaces but your organization is on steroids. 😍😍😍. Thanks for sharing.
haha thanks gina!
Totally agree 100%.
I would add in a fire blanket or extinguisher
Nathaniel I have been watching a lot of your videos this past week. There is something very special about what you do. Thanks!
Incredible build! You’re so organized. I love it. And all your stuff is such high quality. Fantastic.
thanks for watching :)
How could you not have such a good organize setup
I looked at your photographs being a lover of photography all of my life 71 right now but still cool you have such beautiful images end the price is so affordable 4 beautiful images so now I see why your build is so beautiful I'm going to go back to looking at you images
NICE SET UP, ITS NICE TO BE YOUNG, IM A NOMAD AND LIVED IN VANS AND OTHER VEHICLES, BEEN LIVING ON THE ROAD FOR 15 PLUS YEARS....
NOW THAT IM OLDER I JUST CANT DO IT IN SUCH A SMALL VEHICLE, IM IN A 35YR OLD RV AND IT WORKS FOR ME, I LOVE THE LIFE STYLE AND THE FREEDOM IT GIVES U, KEEP GOING STRONG MY FRIEND....
Nat-you are my ascetics guru. I’m building out my SUV for fulltime living come October. Thank you for the stellar tour of your killer build. Subscribed! 🌿
Can I get more info? I also want to buy a suv for this purpose. I want to buy a 4 wheel drive gas one. Not sure which one is best for conversion. Thanks!
I know I am late to the party (so to speak) but via search of overland car camping came upon this video. Nathaniel, I am impressed and inspired. Well done! Both the build and the walk through. At the end I was surprised I had spent 45 minutes with you. I see you've moved up to a different rig and I will watch some of that too (although out of budget... for now). This is a doable build and something that gives me lots of ideas. Thanks
This is amazingly clever/minimalist design!!! Well done! I love all the bags and their purposes 👏. All very organized! Thanks for such detailed video! Genial!
thank you!
Looks like staying in a lux hotel with billion dollars view. I really like the comfortable bed and linen bedding, Maple cabinets and the plant. No-one has a nicer setup like you do. Very impressive 😊
I love how it is stealth outside and home like inside
thanks! that was definitely by design
This is the best I’ve ever seen 👏
Such a clean build!
I've never heard of that type of keddle. So clever!
Thanks for sharing 👍
thanks for watching!
I love how you went through all the items you have in each bag and storage area. You keep everything so neat. One thing that you did not mention is what you use for a toilet.
