My camper setup is complete and I'm so excited to get out and use it! If you're looking for a fun way to explore right now I highly recommend this - you don't need all of the extra accessories to get out and have a good time either. If you do want the extra accessories, I'm really loving all of the things I talked about in this video. Except I may need a heavier blanket heading into fall... 🥶 thanks for watching!
It's taken me about 10 years to collect all the camp gear that I own, purely becuase I just can't afford to buy the expensive equipment all at once. Blessings that you were able to have all of this on your first go-around at a campsite. It's not always about the gadgets, so if you're watching this and feel discouraged cause ya can't afford a $300 awning, just remember that $10 tarps and rope get the job done. Use what you have, and get out in nature!!!!
@Budget Overland Australia Use what you have. She was gifted expensive gear that many of us cannot afford. Just figure it out. You don't need all that fancy stuff.
Tiffany Ann this is Lori Ann yes tarps and rope or bungee cords work just fine. Your a smart lady. I like your way of thinking more than all the fancy gagets. Lol. Have a great day, sunshine.
A hot water bottle for cold nights is a total game-changer. I heat up my water just before bed and tuck it into my sleeping bag so it's super cozy when I get in. Stays warm through the morning. I reuse the water several times over, so it doesn't draw on your water supply. Plus, they're inexpensive!
I've been camping in my vehicle(s) for years. Couple of items you really don't need. A wooden platform. It is just cumbersome and must be dragged out when you need to use your SUV for 'normal' everyday activities. Just use a 12" thick or less memory foam cut to size of SUV for your bed, light weight easy in easy out. Add blankets All that cooking stuff is to much bother, pack cold food or use a fire pit for cooking. Bring a small iron grid. Showering can be done in a campgrounds, or I use two buckets one to wash in one to rinse in. I carry 3 gallons of water, replenish/refill when ever possible (I've never run out). I also carry a Life Straw for drinking out of streams, lakes, etc. Electronics I use a solar power mat or simply power Up/recharge when I am driving. Lot of the items are a huge waste of space and you most likely will find them a bother in the woods. The item that made my camping so much nicer was window screens and the magnetic sunroof screen. Inexpensive on Amazon. Hardest part is a bathroom, a portable bathroom would be great. I'm female - 64 years old and have traveled across America 4 times now, just my dog and I. It is the greatest time of my life! Never ever had any issues (with humans or animals). I've put about 350,000 miles on my vehicles traveling. Happy camping everybody!
the wooden platform can be designed so that the top half folds over the bottom half in your trunk. Then you can put your seats up and use your suv like regular :) platforms are a great addition to make your sleeping area even, and provides more storage space!
agree with you 100%.. people just love bringing so much stuff with them on these "camping trips"... and then wind up using 1/3 of them.. or going all out for something simple like making tea..lol
I agree, except the platform. Definitely depends on the car. My seats in my car don’t lay flat and there’s a 5 inch difference between the front of the seats and the back of the car. Definitely need a platform to sleep evenly
Hey Allison! Love the setup. To solve your problem at 10:30, instead of wooden legs, wrap paracord around your headrest and attach it to the plywood! that way it is hanging rather than standing and there is no obstruction in the way of your cooler!
You’ve given me hope that i can turn my small suv into a camper! I’m your grandmother’s age and a widow for the past 5 years but want to explore this car camping idea. I’m handy but not so much these days so seeing all your gear and that most is easily purchased is exciting!! Thank you for making this video. Blessings on your travels 😊
I'm going for my second camping trip in my Toyota Highlander next week. Am "shopping" my house for items and only buying a few things. My mattress is cushions from the porch furniture with a memory foam topper of one of my twin beds. It was sooo comfy and cozy for sleeping, like being in a warm, dry cocoon. Spent $38 dollars for reflectix and black duct tape (Weathertech wanted $195 for the set). Got a "wine bottle" Coleman cooler off of Amazon for $35 since she is right about the dimensions fitting well on the floor. I am very excited to try this lifestyle. At 69 years old, I'm ready for adventures.
The negativity in these comments is ridiculous. Still WAY cheaper than building out a van. Beautiful set up and very COOL! Thanks for putting this content out, girl!
It’s not ridiculous and they’re not negative, they’re just pointing out the obvious that a lot of this is not realistic for truly nomadic individuals who may not have an extensive bank account to buy expensive unnecessary things
Absolutely one of the best SUV camping builds I’ve seen. The design thinking and simple but effective solutions have led you to almost a minimalist camper, which is pretty rare. Most builds look like the vehicle is making a trip to a storage unit. Very nice. You’re likely aware, but they make a pressurized shower system that attaches to your roof rack - or you could make one fairly easily out of PVC. Just a thought if you decide you want more water on hand without giving up any interior space. You’ve probably already seen them. Very nice storytelling on the video too. Straight forward, direct, yet still conversational. Great job all around. You def earned my sub.
Solar string lights for night time lighting work great and less drain on your power source. Love your set up! And to the critics, it's less about the specific products and more about the ideas.
Also consider getting some Solar rechargeable inflatable Luci Light's they put out alot of light. I have a 2023 Forester and really like your platform build. Do you have plans you can share?
Lighten up, y'all! So she monetizes her channel. Good for her. I'm impressed that she has over half a million subs and this vid has been watched over a million times in 10 months...and without a bikini.
do you think it's because youtube is in the advertising business? You're such a phucking idiot that you proved their point. She is a vapid kunt that has no problem out right lying to you and supporting whatever cheap piece of chinese plastic that they put in front of her.
it is channels like yours that i cling to when i feel daunted or doubtful about trying the minivan camping life! I'm a young female from Washington state as well, still in the research phase of doing what you're doing! I get stressed out sometimes thought with the seeming mountain of stuff to figure out. Thank you!
Allison, great video and ideas. I've been tent camping for 30 years and often sleeping in the back of my pickup. Recently I considered getting a camper van or teardrop and the prices are daunting. Seeing your simple solutions has got me motivated to jazz up the bed of my pickup. I never knew there were pull down awnings! Seriously. So much better than my tarp flapping around. Thanks.
Hi Allison, you brace the head part of your sleeping platform with a stick. I use a chain and wrap it through the headrests of the front seats to keep it stabilized. That leaves the full foot space available for cargo. Super awesome video! Thank you!
I used to watch your videos back in the day, and I've recently rediscovered and reconnected with your content--which is awesome! You have a great set-up. I'm currently working on turning my Honda Element into a cozy camper. Thank you for the suggestions!
The brand new stove, the yeti cooler with literally just an onion in it, the white shoes, when she started the video with her bed set up being a single rumpl blanket....
Bonjour,a note I have discovered on sleeping bags.If you get a double wide(designed for two)one person can have all the room they desire and store your clothes and gear that you want to stay warm 🙏I hope you have a lovely journey 🪷
Cool setup! Just a thought, I’d incorporate pull out drawers so it extends out past the car. Gives you extra counter space and a place to get food organized and prepped, etc.
Also, I have never pined for a...*hairdryer* in the outback while camping, lol. Although, the gadgets ARE pretty cool I will admit (Sponsorship is nice) If you're watching this to find new, cool, pricey gear (and I do like that too, lol) this is a great video for you. But like someone else said - if you're new at this, DO NOT think you have to have all this cool stuff! You can absolutely get out there and travel with WAY less, there are lots of videos to show you how. But kudos to Allison for getting out there as a solo female traveler and inspiring others!
I am going to share your video with family and friends. Your simple SUV camping set up may help to inspire others to keep things simple and make adventurous vacations more doable and affordable. I have invested quite a bit of time and money in building out a van I have lived in full-time for over a year. Your build looks like it could work out very well for days, weeks or even months of adventuring at a time. It is awesome!
I live in my van and it's the best thing I ever did. Mines an old Chrysler town and country but with the stow and go seat folded into the floor it gives me plenty of space. I know this is a promotion for Jackery, but there are so many cheaper alternatives that are just as good. I have three solar generators - smaller that the 1000, but produce about 700 wh, and I bought them all for a total of 310 dollars. It pays to shop around.
@@mikejabbur508 any of the Chrysler Town and country with stow and go seating. My 2007 is still going strong. The only thing I wish it had that the later models have, is that the back seat passenger windows would roll down - unfortunately they are fixed.
@@MrDougmartin Thanks for following up! And I apologize-I was actually asking about your cheaper alternatives for the Jackery that you mention. Jackery's definitely seem awesome, but SUPER pricey. I was looking online and saw a few brands and some were pretty cheap, but I was hoping to hear from an actual user which ones turned out to be a good purchase. Thanks!!!
Wow, Been watching you since your makeup tutorial and haul days. To see you evolved from that beauty blogger, to minimal living, and now solo camping is just beyond words. Glad to see your videos again. Such a gem!
That's the stove we got! Love it ESPECIALLY because it's so easy to carry around, we will be camping out of our SUV soon and this video is so super helpful :) thank you!
I'm planning a cross country trip in a Tesla ModelY, just started to put things together. Have you thought about an induction 1 or two burner portable unit and using a Jackery or something similar so no more messing with fuel. I also bought a refrigerator that can run even if the car is not running . No messy ice bags! TheTesla has a camping mode where you can run certain electrical device through the big battery, I can run the heater, a/c and still charge all my devices without running the battery down. AND I can watch RUclips, Netflix, play games etc. while staying warm and toasty or the A/C . Watching your video gave me some ideas that I can work on. Mahalo
I love the setting of your car and I see that you are super excited for the camping 👏 I noticed that you’ve got only the highest quality of everything which is super expensive when you sum up everything! Just want to let the people know that it works just as fine with cheaper stuff too and some things can be done DIY 👍🏼 ✨
Got the same awning. Love it!! I encourage others with this awning to definitely deploy the stakes and guy lines. I learned the hard way twice (yeah, you'd think it should only take once) LOL. Once in the UP of Michigan and another time boondocking in Colorado in my Crosstrek. Great gear summary! Thank you for sharing!
Great job! There’s fancier set ups but yours is simple and functional. And it’s your own! Building your set up and modifying it as you go is a big part of the fun😊.
Inflatable Solar Light Reliable Solar Lantern, to save on using Batteries in the lanterns,, you can also hang them around your campsite, Nice power 1K watt is good, the geyser is awesome
Cool video Allison. I like it. Just one thing I would like to point out. The wood legs that holds your bed seems to be very thin and may damage your back seats of your car. I would recomend you to cover then with some soft rubber coat or something that gives a soft pressure in order to have a soft support on your back seats, or make the legs wider so the weight can be distributed throught more area of your back seats . If not when you sleep on top, these woods legs are very thin and giving a lot of presure into a small area of your back seats can damagen them Great video
I’m planning my first “camping” trip for April! It’s a postponed birthday trip. I’ll be in a cabin but it’s off the grid - no running water and generator power. I’m so excited!
I love camping with girls… yall make things comfy and nice! Guys are idiots and just focus on fire, knives and beers. Love your setup and the thought you put into creature comforts! That awning is amazing!
Those window covers are really cool, especially with how fitted they are. I couldn't sleep in a car without covered windows, but that addresses that concern.
Sooo many great gadgets! I just bought a Subaru Crosstrek - a little small but still sleepable with the hatchback tent I have. Definitely going to check out that awning!
Thank you for this! I have a Ford Escape that I've recently been starting to convert and aside from the tab that I have open for this video, I now have one open for the Rhino-Rack awning, the Jackery, the Yeti and the WeatherTech window coverings! Looks like I've got some shopping to do! Wheeee!
Porta potty and pop up tent 4it 2 put under your awning makes life easier and more comfortable.....love all your "gidgy-gadgets"....glam camping......screen panels to add to your awning would feel a little more enclosed and safe in the middle of the night when visiting the little ⛺.
"This thing will power a hairdryer" you crack me up girl! Wonderhussy (YT) has taught me "janky" and now you have introduced me to a British term "rejig" that I will use from now on. RUclips is a plethora of terminology and learning. I enjoy your videos, Safe & Wonderful travels!
Bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee today! Wasn’t even looking for this but I guess the universe needed me to see it. You e given me some great ideas! Stay safe out there and keep exploring.
Jackery Explorer 1000 with the solar panels is definitely giving you all the freedom and comfort of using all your electrical devices without being dependent on the electrical grid. It is definitely a must but a little expensive... 1400$...anyway I love your setup! It's amazing!!! Thanks for sharing! :)
I have a Gererark 1000 which is almost identical to your Jackery 1000 I got it with two of the same solar panels for around $1200. I used it when I went camping last May and used it for running my Mr Coffee Keurig machine and heated water in 2 min. to use in my Freeze-dried Chicken & rice pouch and also made a nice hot Pumpkin spice cappuccino with it. I also used it to run a small heater-Fan-Light defroster I picked up at Harbor Freight. I also bring a 5 gal. solar shower and enclosure for keeping clean and rinsing off things.
I bought the IceCo mini frig for camping and tested it on my Jackery 1500. It kept one compartment at 7 degrees and the other at 34 degrees for 2 days without any solar charges hooked up. After 24 hrs, it still had 63% battery life. With them, I am good forever.
This so 😎. I’m not a pro at camping but I recently rented a camper van and I love the concept. I’m inspired to make one. Thank you for all the details.
I own a camper but I've been watching van life. I'm soooo in love myself. Much easier than hooking up the camper. Easier to park. Just easier plus if danger occurs jump in driver's seat and go. I'm w ya on the idea. I just need a van now. Lol
I watched you as a beauty youtuber for years. Tonight this video popped on as my husband was watching camping videos! I couldn't believe it! It was so nice to see your smiling face in a different genre! Great video and so creative for car camping.
See you out there. I’m now converting my Toyota Highlander. I ordered an iKamper mini, a rooftop tent so I can use the interior for a Dometic cfx95 cooler, clothes, food, Jackery 1000+2 solar panels, etc. I’m almost there. My goal is to be on the road by October and be gone until spring of 2022. Once I have the portable mobile router/WiFi etc. done, then I’m ready to go.
@@josephinebustos8074 may I ask you a question? What was the reaction of your family/friends/tribe or anyone else in your life to your plan? I made the mistake of mentioning to my people and immediately got negative feedback. I have never been more excited to do anything in my life and it really really wounded me that they were so incredibly unsupportive.
@@wenderella81 my only child’s reaction was concerned about COVID. Other than that, they all understand why I want to do this. Besides, even if none of them are supportive, I’m doing it regardless. It’s my life, my money buying all these so I don’t care. I didn’t need their permission, I simply informed.
This is amazing!!! As a nature and landscape photographer I've become obsessed with these videos, and I think you're is the perfect setup. totally going to copy this :)
I also purchased a doler store set of 8 solar walkway/ garden lights. Easy to carry and have no power requirements for easy light on your site.. just find a light proof storage container.. can charge by just riding in the vehicle during the day in prep for the evening
I don't know why this video showed up on my phone but I'm so glad it did, I have a Subaru Forester and I was looking at pulling a trailer but this is far superior!!
Great video, wonderful ideas. OMG I especially liked the custom window coverings... you can't imagine what I've been going through to cover my windows smh A million thanks!
As much as i is pretty cool to see what you have done with ur SUV & tarp etc.. It would be nice to know that camping is not just about sleep, food & a fire. It would be cool to do certain activities while camping. Hiking, fishing, Mtn Biking, Swimming, canoeing etc.. Even camping with other campers.
Glad I found your blog. I ordered the Jackery 1000 + the 2 solar panels 100w. I still need to order the Geyser water system with heating. My iKamper Skycamp mini is getting delivered this week. Still need to buy Dometic CFX 95 and few more things, and then once my mobile router/WiFi etc set up, then I’m ready to go travel and work remotely.
Brilliant! I drive a Forester and have thinking about this for a while. You've confirmed some of my thoughts and given me new ideas. I love the window shades. Thanks.
Pretty sure everything she uses and shows on the vid is a promo for the product. Nothing seems to be a product she already owned and everything seems to be chosen ONLY for it's promotional value. No clever little cheap alternatives, or living in a car tips and tricks. Allison is skilled with her presentations of the products and very good with directions to the stores where products can be purchased; so good on her for creating a video that's informative for anyone who is looking for tips on what they might want or need for their own lifestyles.
Yooooooo, this is an incredible setup. I was hell bent on buying a rooftop tent, but this is making me rethink that. Thanks Allison, you’re awesome!!!✌🏽😃🤘🏽
It's funny you say that because that was my same thought process to getting here! Was completely convinced I wanted a rooftop tent but everything was completely sold out so I started researching other options. Definitely do it!
Allison Anderson definitely thinking about it!!! Think the only reason I wouldn’t is the rooftop tent would leave room for my wife and our little one (our doggie🐶)...Definitely thinking it over though. Thanks for replying Allison 😃✌🏽
I was about to ask you this... To both of you... Why not a roof top tent? Pros and cons? Any info will be great thanks!! I have a jeep compass Trailhawk and I was sold on the rooftop tent idea.. should I reconsider? 🤔
You have great camping items. I'm very impressed. I'm 61 and getting around retirement age. I'm looking into getting into a SUV and travel the USA. You're giving me great ideas. Thank you...😃👍👌👊🚙🏕
I got my window shades for my minivan from a place called heat shield and they do the very same thing and I just love them they fit so good! Best time for $175 I've ever spent!
I did NOT know those things about the YETI cooler you have! This video was super informative. I was weary of car camping long term with no shower but you SAVED me :) TYFS
Love the way you designed everything! Regarding the support leg, I would just add a second leg that is cut to fit on top of the cooler. Then you could choose which one you wanted based on your current needs.
Hey Alison I sleep in my suv I put fitted mesh around all my windows acts very similar to a tent window. It can help regulate the heat and stop the stuffy feeling you get from an inclosed car. Winter time not such an issue
Ok this is the coolest SUV setup I’ve seen!! The plus is my little Outlander is almost the same exact size so I can copy just about everything you’ve done lol!!
This is exactly what someone who doesn't go camping would say. It's a community out there in the Camping World. We don't steal each others stuff. Camping is actually a fairly expensive hobby, and therefore is mostly enjoyed by the white middle to upper class. We have our own money. We don't need to steal each other's camping gear
Jason Gregory it’s a big country. We all have our experiences. All races camp. Plenty of white people without money also. Please be careful of stereotypes and unconscious bias
We don't live in the dark ages anymore. People can still enjoy camping nowadays and benefit from the comfort of modern technology at the same time. They're not mutually exclusive.
I love this set up and the way you explained it, your voice sounds like a professional model doing commercials . I'm planning to retire soon and I wanna go the same way with a small vehicle that I can drive anywhere without the worries of a big camper o motorhome, planning to do a lot of driving through USA and maybe to south America!
Contemplating future off-grid camping options in my Merc E Class Estate (great rear load length space), albeit I like the Forester - maybe i should have kept my Range Rover Sport for more sleep area head space. I have seen a few platforms made up but for just me an inflatable single airbed will work for me when solo car camping... 2 dogs with me, (small labrador & a pug), but they can snuggle up on a dog bed on top of a folded down rear seat back...Other kit can be kept in stacked storage boxes using remaining trunk/boot space, front passenger space &/or a decent roof box. What I took from your set up is that you have functional decent kit that makes car living/camping more tolerable...I like that you have achieved a solution that provides functional, dignified, clean, organised living. You seem to have used wise initiative to source some kit linked to affiliates &.or sponsors.....but that's a smart.way to achieve workable camping & decent equipment & to have support on your channel. Good video production & engaging content...Thanks for sharing
Hello Allison and thank you for sharing your video with your cool set up on your car/Subaru. I am very inspired to modify my Subaru as well to accommodate the outdoors a lot more. I do have a question in regards to the rhino rack Sun seeker that you have attached to the rail rack system on your Subaru. Did you install that on the stock rail system that came with your car and or did you have to add any additional adapters/parts? Thanks and looking forward to your reply.
Amazing set up! I've never gone camping like this and I'm hoping to try it soon. I have a lot of things to figure out and your set up is a great model for me. The only thing I would do different is to get an electric cooler. If you have a regular cooler, including the fancy Yeti, it means you don't plan on being there more than one day or so. You could probably power the electric cooler and all your electronics for a day with that 1k power station. Thank you so much for the video. Cheers!

The oven she has was sparkling clean, it didn't even look like it has been turned on before her cooking montage.
@@Breeski1 she is new. Her stuff is new. Cleaning is an option.
The brand new stove, the yeti cooler with literally just an onion in it, the white shoes, when she started the video with her bed set up being a single rumpl blanket....

This was an awesome video my god I didn’t know half these things existed and I watch a lot of videos like this
Bonjour,a note I have discovered on sleeping bags.If you get a double wide(designed for two)one person can have all the room they desire and store your clothes and gear that you want to stay warm 🙏I hope you have a lovely journey 🪷
Cool setup! Just a thought, I’d incorporate pull out drawers so it extends out past the car. Gives you extra counter space and a place to get food organized and prepped, etc.
Where can you find pullout drawers? Cool!
@@mindymccolgan6826 build them into the bed frame
Could not agree more, they make such a difference. Things get lost and Mis placed so easily.
Instead of cutting that platform support leg completely you can add hinge point so you can use it with and without cooler box
Simple?
I car camp too! I got some window screens on amazon and they are great for having fresh air and keeping the bugs out
Since you have a hatchback, you can use magnets to drape a tarp around the opened hatchback. Great spot to get changed, etc.
this is chill, we loving using a subaru as best as we can! I really went all out on my crosstrek conversion
Can you recommend one of the make/models you have and like?
Such a gem!

As someone who is not “handy”, I really appreciate seeing all the cool gadgets out there to be able to get started camping quickly!
Mahalo
This is so awesome! I just bought a Rogue and started searching for videos like this. So glad one of my fave youtubers decided to do one!
It is a very emotional camping. The nature is beautiful and the air is clear
If not when you sleep on top, these woods legs are very thin and giving a lot of presure into a small area of your back seats can damagen them
Great video
I’m planning my first “camping” trip for April! It’s a postponed birthday trip. I’ll be in a cabin but it’s off the grid - no running water and generator power. I’m so excited!
How was your first trip?
@@deeinkc seems she didn't make it back 😞🙏🏽
I love camping with girls… yall make things comfy and nice! Guys are idiots and just focus on fire, knives and beers. Love your setup and the thought you put into creature comforts! That awning is amazing!
Oh my God I am drooling over that Jackery set up!!!!!!
Wheeee!
I have a Ford Escape that I converted because of this video!
You have the cleanest camping gear l've ever seen.
This is one of the most helpful car camping vlogs I've seen in that you pretty much covered all the bases except the bathroom issue lol
i love the awning! I really want one bc they are just so useful and practical for any environment!
Omg thank you for the sweet ideas. You just made my day. Now I’m going to plan my trip with my car. I’m so excited 😆
Lol
You are so prepared, its great the way you can connect with nature. Greetings from south america 🇨🇱. .
I watched you as a beauty youtuber for years. Tonight this video popped on as my husband was watching camping videos! I couldn't believe it! It was so nice to see your smiling face in a different genre! Great video and so creative for car camping.
This the cleanest suv camper I saw so far. I’m scared to go out and stay like that but I love the idea. So I watch these kinda videos 😅😅
I’ve been contemplating solo traveling and converting my SUV into a camper car and came across your tutorial videos. I’m so inspired to travel now!
It’s totally worth it.
Gurl me too. I turn 40 in 2 weeks and I am ready for a new chapter. I think SUV living has given me a purpose. Do it gurly! We can do it!

Yes, it's entertaining but feels more like an ad than a helpful van life video
I car camp all the time! Thanks for these tips to make it even better!!!

Hey Alison I sleep in my suv I put fitted mesh around all my windows acts very similar to a tent window. It can help regulate the heat and stop the stuffy feeling you get from an inclosed car. Winter time not such an issue

Looks great! So prepared. I’d be concerned people would target you to steal your expensive stuff tho. I’d love to learn what safety tips you have.
Keep on the move and don't show off anything
This is exactly what someone who doesn't go camping would say. It's a community out there in the Camping World. We don't steal each others stuff. Camping is actually a fairly expensive hobby, and therefore is mostly enjoyed by the white middle to upper class. We have our own money. We don't need to steal each other's camping gear
@@jasongregory9323 sad but true. Remember shen oprah went camping? Partially to make it more approachable for POC
Jason Gregory it’s a big country. We all have our experiences. All races camp. Plenty of white people without money also. Please be careful of stereotypes and unconscious bias
I guess many of the people out in the woods take precautions and maybe they're not about to advertise what they're carrying.
Twinkle lights & a pop up shower. This is majorly princess camping lol

This is genius!! I love the set up. Makes me want to go camping!
The issue is that if someone hit you in the back of your vehicle, all that wood frame will punch you in the back badly.
It is good to know what is out there and available. There is information on RUclips for everyone. Just do what works for you.
Cheers!
