The perfect choice!!!! Well done! As a fellow owner of a 80 series '96 with 489,000 miles I've put on it since new I can confidently say the 100 series it will meet and exceed your needs and expectations. Would recommend you look at attending an Overlanding Expo event in the near future. Also consider Blueridge Overland Gear for the "attic" they sell for the cruisers.
Thanks Darren! I've had the various Overland Expos in my sights for a while, but they've never lined up with my schedule. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to one at some point 👍
The G wagon will beat it off road but the LC is very reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain. Definitely a great choice and better than the Sequoia, FJ Cruiser or any GM product.
Make sure to change the timing belt when you can! My Tundra has the same engine. It’s one of the best engines ever made. To save money, I bought the Aisin kit (part # TKT021), then took that kit to a reputable mechanic and not the Toyota dealer. They need changed every 90k miles. And if you ever need to get the starter changed, get the smog pump changed too, and vice versa. Make sure to get Denso and Aisin branded parts. It’s what Toyota uses. They’re the reason why Toyota is so reliable
Great choice. I bought a 2001 Land Cruiser two years ago and absolutely love it. We’ve traveled all over the west in it. We sleep in the back and it is great. For such an old vehicle we haven’t had a single problem. Enjoy!!
Excellent choice and although a bit thirsty with gas you are gaining room and dependability which in the long run easily pays for a lot of gas. I like how you work with your vehicles with a "less is more" approach, rather than going crazy with expensive add-ons. Enjoy the ride!
I was so excited as he started talking through what he wanted, knowing it could only lead to a Land Cruiser. I had one of these come into my shop with nearly half a million miles. The owner just had it repainted it and wanted paint protection film put on, so he must expect it to continue running for a while. He said it's given him no problems except for something with the braking system that had to be repaired, but otherwise it's never been in the shop for anything unexpected.
What everyone else said! You picked the PERFECT adventure rig! I've had 3 Toyotas get 300,000 miles and the Land Cruiser is just the most handsome and capable. So jealous and can't wait to see what adventures you have in it.
Honestly this is one of the things I love about this channel. You do reasonable adventures for reasonable people. So much of youtube content is so big budget stuff in a fancy new rig, and its cool but its so far outside of most folks real options. Thank you for continuing to make content for the normal folk. Looking forward to many miles and many adventures in this sweet Land Cruiser.
Tristan, regarding drawers under the platform, I think you could have your cake and eat it, too. If you put drawers on heavy-duty drawer slides under the platform, you could still get to them inside by opening the top as as you have it now, but then you've also got the convenience of the drawer if you are out side and need to get to stuff or need an extendable platform. Something to consider.
True, but to be honest, I just don't need the drawers. I can still access the stuff I need to from the back (outside) by opening up the top. Plus drawers and their associated hardware eat into the amount of storage space. Thanks for watching!

As a 100 series owner, I can attest to their reliability. BUT, there are a couple things to look out for. Make sure you keep an eye on your heater Ts because they fail and overheat the engine. Flush your brake fluid regularly because the electronic unit costs 2500-3000 bucks if it goes out. Other than that, just change your fluids and keep everything greased. OEM parts are stupid expensive, but they're also stupid reliable.

Land Cruiser, Sequoyah or 4 Runner. I can't wait to see which it is! I'm a Highlander (no build) camper gal myself so I get wanting to stick with a Toyota SUV. 225k miles and still runs like it just rolled off the assembly line. ETA Land Cruiser for the win! I've been trying to talk a friend out of his 2008 LC for two years 😂. No joy, he won't part with it. Congrats on the new AdventureMobile!
Excellent Choice! Beautiful Example. If a Land Cruiser can't get there, ya probably shouldn't be there. It's difficult to over estimate the capability of these rigs. Driver talent usually falls short long before vehicle capability comes into question. Safe travels, Tristan.
That is the best "logic" to arriving at having to buy a Land Cruiser - 😂 Congrats! Can you share how much you eventually paid for it since "just a bit more than $15k" seems really low - especially the great condition your 2000 is in. Also - pls do keep the RAV4 vids coming too since I think that underscores what anyone can do with just a little bit of effort to get out there and explore.
Wow, a 2000 with only 140k+ miles and she looks to be in great shape! Congrats on finding and landing her, Tristan! Just bought a new 2022 Subaru Forester Premium last week for my very first SUV. I don't plan on doing any real significant off-roading, but very likely some light off-roading when accessing campsites. It's nice to know, however, that if needed, it's a pretty capable cross-over SUV! Cheers, Tristan!
Nice choice! After considering and dismissing all the alternatives for about the same reasons, I bought a 100 series last October. Recent gas prices lead me to question my choice, but ultimately I decided I couldn’t go back to car camping in a 4Runner, it’s just too small.
Great choice. I drive a 4runner and the points you mentioned about legendary reliability was a major selling point for me. Toyota's are just better than your average vehicles...
Dude, happy SUVR'ving for the rest of your life.Good choice although I deplore the dismal gas mileage, rejoice as we are not too far out from getting an hybrid/EV retrofit kit. Have fun responsibly
Thanks Joseph! It's always good to remember too that keeping a 22 year old car on the road is more environmentally friendly, despite the terrible gas mileage, than buying a new car that took tremendous resources to make.
Excellent choice! I think the whole Yukon wreck was a blessing in disguise. I think you’ll love this vehicle more than any of the others. Smart choice 😉👍
I have a 2006 Lexus LX470, It's the Lexus version of the Land Cruiser...265k Miles and never an issue. Best vehicle I have ever had. Enjoy yours! Simple but important add on to make, Bluetooth mod so you can connect your phone!
I didn't get an LX470 for the sole reason that more people on RUclips search for Land Cruiser stuff than LX470 stuff, so that's better for the videos. And more people in general are more familiar with the name Land Cruiser. Otherwise, an LX470 absolutely would have been in the running. And the previous owner already added a nice aftermarket stereo 👍
Congrats, really happy for you. For me as an overlanding vehicle the high MPG makes it a no go. I cannot afford that kind of money for petrol for the distances I want to be covering. I have no perfect vehicle to suggest in that respect. My hope lies in the future.

I miss my ‘92 Land Cruiser so much. Eleven mpg from the factory but it could climb a tree! It had a straight six 400. Timing gear (no chain or belt) and engineered perfectly. Enjoy!
The Landcruiser is a good choice over the FJC for the way you intend to use it. I've owned a 2008 FJC since new, kept it stock, and it's fits me perfectly for how I use it on my western road trips pulling a small camper. If I were to sell the FJC, a late model Landcruiser would be my choice. FWIW, I also own a '77 FJ40 Landcruiser (since 1983) that I use around the place. Looking forward to seeing how you put your new ride to use.
I chose a 2008 Sequoia SR5 for reliability and roominess, to drive from Galveston TX to Tuktoyaktuk, NT Canada. It was a champion workhorse and had no major problems. However, the fuel consumption was terrible.
Nice! I love the 100 series! But I am waiting for my North American Prado 120 to get worn out! The 2UZ-FE in its “little brother“ a Lexus GX470 turned over 455 000 km last month! Still a great do all vehicle on road and off road! This 100 series will go forever properly maintained! Don’t forget the engine has a timing belt! Looking forward to seeing more videos! Cheers!
I picked up a 2006 T1N Diesel Sprinter a few years ago. It's been my daily driver, gets 25 mpg, can go most places you've shown and I paid 6k in perfect condition. My 200 watts solar is good on my Yakima racks. How much did you pay? I also have a gas guzzler powered jeep wrangler as a backup at 18 mpg
As a owner of many Toyota trucks and SUVs none of them get very good mileage. My 98 Tacoma, that I bought new, 3.4 gets about 16 and my tundra with the 4.7 got about the same with stock tires. My 17 F150 platinum gets 22mpg. I guess they figure if you can afford a LC you can afford the gas.
I've owned 4 100 Series Land Cruisers and all around, they're the best..................I would say a 70 series but we can't get newer ones in the states. The 4.7 V8 is a million mile engine if properly taken care of. Congrats!!
Duuuuuude!!!!!!!! Ok I don't know where to start!! At first I was bummed that you didn't go with an FJ since I love mine so freakin much, but you mentioned the short size of the vehicle and I nodded in agreement. I'm 6ft tall and I can barely sleep in my FJ alone and diagonally. It keeps me dreaming of a rooftop tent but I'm trying to keep things simple since I don't travel much. I didn't think you were interested in a Land Cruiser cause you said the FJ's were pricey. In my area FJ's are less than Land Cruisers but I guess you must have found a good deal. I totally love Land Cruisers!!! Only downfall would be the gas mileage. I took an all day trip yesterday up in the Sierras which included highway, country roads, and 4 wheeling on rough terrain. I checked my mileage when I got home and I got 19.5 mpg. On highway only I can get 20 or 21. And at $6.25 a gallon for premium it hurts! I know you will have many many years of fun adventures in your new rig. Drive safe and congrats!!!!
you're going to have fun with the 100, you will end up modifying this beyond what you expect, Land Cruisers are addictions. Have fun. Oh, 80's have inline 6, you might get from a-b 10 minutes faster.
I bought a 2000 with 140k on it over 6 years ago, It now has 200k. Plenty of room, Long family trip, Overlanding, pulling my various trailers. Not to mention it's the most reliable vehicle brand you can buy. It's been my favorite vehicle I've ever owned.
You can't go wrong with a Toyota LandCruiser! ❤️ I love your new adventure ride! With the amount of time you spend on the road you'll really appreciate this SUV.
Toyota is the way to go. Been driving Toyota for many years. I currently own a 2013 Toyota Sequoia 2nd Gen and a 2022 Toyota Tundra both overland. You are on the right track. I would like to know more about how you built the platform that extends all the way to just shy of your read drivers seat.
You probably should know your facts b4 commenting the 80 series has a 4.5 twin cam 24 valve straight six which has 224 hp and your 100 series has a 4.7 v8 232 hp not a big difference in power output
There was another "Toyota" option, a Lexus GX470, outside North America it is known as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. A lot of people put on a small 2-3 inch lift with 33-35 inch tires etc.
The Land Cruiser was an excellent choice. Can't fault you at all on that. But really, it's not appreciably 'bigger' than a 4th or 5th gen 4Runner. I have a 5th gen 4Runner and find that it's excellent for my four wheeling and overlanding adventures. Enjoy the new (to you) Land Cruiser.
I have the 1998 Lexus LX470 in the same color (old man tan) with just a bit more mods. You could not have made a better choice. Upkeep on maintenance can be a bit pricey. But it is extremely reliable. RIdes great. Very capable. We luv sleeping in ours.
You must be rolling in dough! For 2 and a half years I've been in a Ford Transit van with a mid high roof. It has the EcoBoost engine. A V6 310 hp twin turbo and a backup camera.
The UN buys Land Cruisers by the shipload. All the different agencies within the UN use them. They're always white and fully loaded. I've considered the UN to be extravagant (using other peoples' money encourages government agencies everywhere to throw money away. The UN is notorious for wasting money. Despite the LC reliability, it seems the UN buys new ones every couple years. Mdst of their applications could get by with something that costs half as much but even though the LC capabilities are overkill in many if not most UN jobs, if they are as reliable as you say they are then I suppose that's why the UN goes with them. It's hard to have maintenance done in most third world environments.
You’re just adorable. There is nothing that brings a smile to my face more than a person who has a New Toy and is thrilled to death with it. Enjoy! Use it in good health & safety, and I eagerly await watching your new adventures!
I had a '91 diesel Land Cruiser in Japan. Got it for $200, the head gasket cracked, so I was able to sell it for $100. It was ok, but too big for Japan and not nearly as awesome as my diesel Mitsubishi Pajero.
225k on a 2000 tlc 100, had 80 series before that that was totaled by an 18wheeler on the interstate who couldn't see stopped traffic because he was on his phone. I crawled out of the sunroof in what was a 4 car totalled accident. Had 60 series before that with 380k. Can't go wrong with tlc!
Assuming you were talking about some other SUV, I came here to correct you for using the term "Ultimate SUV" improperly, but I see that is not necessary. Carry on ;)
i am French and I have Toyota hdj100 and these beasts for the desert and really good for off roading, I traveled to Morocco and Mauritania with is amazing truck
Although you might be surprised at where I’ve been in my minivan, you are 100% correct. The cv joints, transmission, shocks, and other components are not up to the all-the-time off-roading that you do. If you don’t mind the gas bill, a Land Cruiser is an awesome choice. Nice job on the bed build, I think you have more room to sit up that I do. Plus, you can pop the top tailgate for ventilation. Cool pick. Then again, I get 28 MPG :-)
Good choice and I’m sure you will make this vehicle a perfect adventure camper behemoth. I’m looking forward to your fun turn mod videos. I recently traded in my RAV-4 for a 2022 4-Runner, so I am just figuring out the mods I want to make. Your mod videos will be a guide for me. Thanks for sharing.
I thought about not commenting because this will surely reveal that I am not a youngster. I remember us buying a brand new 1985 Landcruiser in Boise. I live in SE Idaho. I can't even begin to tell you what a fantastic vehicle it was. My son who is a true outdoorsman finally sold it about 4 years ago. Yes, 4 years ago... The guy who bought it has totally restored it, I have seen the pictures. Amazing vehicle!!!
You bought the Land cruiser because it's simply the best of the vehicle in the world. I've had three generations of them and hardly spend a penny on repairs
Put one or more maxtrax/traction board/rocks under the front tires to level the LC100 or build up the front end of the platform if you want to sleep head in the middle
Congrats, Tristan! I have a 2009 200 series with 220,000 miles and I still get a frisson every time I slide behind the wheel. You will not regret your choice, and you'll never go back to another vehicle. By the way, Land Cruisers have a 25 year design life...so when you amortize it out, they're not that expensive. I can't wait to follow your build!
Congrats on the new ride! In addition to loving your channel and the topics you cover, I'm also a car nut, specifically Toyota and Honda. My worlds have collided! What a nice surprise this morning.
An excellent choice! I see it has vehicle stability control which will help keep you safe in the future. Also there are tires you can drive year-round that are snow rated with the 3-peak mountain symbol like the Michelin Agilis CrossClimate.
Excellent choice Tristan ! I had two land cruiser before and they are great ! I been driving a 4runner for awhile now with 215,000 miles on it and it runs strong on and Off road... solid vehicles like you already know... looking forward to see your new adventures with so much more ability to go even further off road ! Thanks for sharing !
Ha! Glad you worked yourself to the choice of the one you love! You lerrrrv it! And I can see why. Was thinking maybe it wouldn't take much to shim the platform so it was generally level, giving you better sleep, better platform for placement of things on top so they don't slide around as much. Just a thought. I like the upgrade in the platform to the stronger birch plywood! Looking forward to the new chapters with this one.
Excellent choice! I've been weighing this option myself. My 2001 Subaru Outback H6 is great, just really lacks in power and definitely won't go the same places a Land Cruiser will. I really appreciate your content and it's helped me start setting some goals to get out into nature more. So thank you so much!
more people should take the time and think how they will use the vehicle. glad you made this video. it should be mandatory before people buy a camping vehicle.

I think you’re going to really like this vehicle. Anxious to see you on an adventure with this new rig. 😀👍
Me too! 😁
hello how are you doing 😊
you're going to have fun with the 100, you will end up modifying this beyond what you expect, Land Cruisers are addictions.
I love your new adventure ride!
With the amount of time you spend on the road you'll really appreciate this SUV.
For sure!
300,400,500k miles??? That’s crap! It’ll last well over that! 💪 Great find and congrats!
Nice choice! I drive a JB64 (Suzuki Jimny) in Japan. I'd probably drive something similar to what you have if the roads were wider here.
I’m looking to get out of my lease on a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek and potentially buy a 2003-2009 Lexus GX470.
Winning. Welcome to the family. 1995 FZJ80 (if my username didn't give that away) owner here. 👍
I have an 80 series (350K miles) and 100 series (245K miles) and they both have plus and minuses. For your use, 100 series is a better choice.
I love Toyota vehicles. I travel in my 02 Highlander. Sleep in the back. Kayak on top. Life is good.
Great car. When I was a kid, Dad got a '68 Land Cruiser. While anything but smooth, that thing could have driven to the top of Everest. I'm envious.
You’ll never regret buying a Toyota! Quality and reliable vehicle! Great choice! Enjoy!!
Carry on ;)
I own a 2002 LC and i dont think ill ever own anything but the LC platform. Hopefully one day I can afford a 2016 haha.
i am French and I have Toyota hdj100 and these beasts for the desert and really good for off roading, I traveled to Morocco and Mauritania with is amazing truck
Lucky choice man
Bruh...I have never seen you so damn excited. Hell yeah Land cruiser...kudos!
You forgot about the GX. It’s a shorter Land Cruiser and you still get the same V-8.
That’s low miles.
Those mosquitoes are velociraptors!! Huge!
Lol yup!
In Australia, we just call these 4wds. We think suvs are usually smaller versions of the Aussie 4wd vehicles.
You bought the Land cruiser because it's simply the best of the vehicle in the world. I've had three generations of them and hardly spend a penny on repairs
FANTASTIC vehicle. We had an 06 sequoia that got 12 mpg, tons of power with the 5.7 liter.
Congratulations on the rig.
But if you put your head at the back, you will miss star gazing from the moon roof! Love this channel!
Man, the Sequoia would have been perfect for 50% the cost of a Land Cruiser
Put one or more maxtrax/traction board/rocks under the front tires to level the LC100 or build up the front end of the platform if you want to sleep head in the middle
Congrats, Tristan! I have a 2009 200 series with 220,000 miles and I still get a frisson every time I slide behind the wheel. You will not regret your choice, and you'll never go back to another vehicle. By the way, Land Cruisers have a 25 year design life...so when you amortize it out, they're not that expensive. I can't wait to follow your build!
Excellent choice my friend, I will stick to Toyota and you will never regret that choice.
Sweet find !!! I have an 80 series but wanting to tow a small camping trailer therefore I am in the market for a 100 series. You will love it.
Congrats on the new ride! In addition to loving your channel and the topics you cover, I'm also a car nut, specifically Toyota and Honda. My worlds have collided! What a nice surprise this morning.
Perfect! Thanks for watching 😁
A comparison video of new and old rigs would be very interesting.
I may be an outlier, but basically all those SUVs kind of look the same to me with the exception of the cruiser.
146k miles is quite low for a 2000 car. What did you pay? $20,000?
All the cool guys get an old but very expensive Land Cruiser. Kudos. Internet beggars rule.
I have a 1992 Land Cruiser inline 6 engine I call it my beast it gets 12 miles per gallon downhill with a tail wind. But I love the thing.
Wow, where was this filmed? There is a visible cloud of mosquitos and would be an intolerant location to camp.
Cool...great choice. Land Crushers last forever like you said.
Welcome to the Yota club. They're amazing vehicles.
Good choice. My Ridgeline gets only 13-17 with a six cylinder.
Good choice. You thought it through methodically. Who can argue with a Landcruiser?
more people should take the time and think how they will use the vehicle. glad you made this video. it should be mandatory before people buy a camping vehicle.
Congratulations on your new Land Cruiser! What are your thoughts on the Nissan Armada?
