  • This episode we have a Ford F150 with the dreaded Cam phaser and timing chain problems on a 5.4 3 valve engine , i bought it as a cheap truck project / build to do the repairs and a budget makeover / transformation . Newer than the classic car rescues and revivals we normally do but i had a bit of fun with this one ( and some headaches too) . The surprising bit is that is Right Hand Drive and in Australia !
A quick thanks to ( although he doesn't know me ) Brian ‪@FordTechMakuloco‬ most of my knowledge on these motors came from his videos.

Those 5.4L Engines are notorious for blowing out the passenger side back two Spark Plugs. Ripping out the Threads when the Plug blows out. There's a rethreading kit to put inserts back into the Head. Same method, lots of Grease on the Tap when cutting the new larger hole & new threads for the Insert. Done lots of these. Water drips down into the Coil Boot/Spark Plug holes on the same rear two Cylinders.

Mate - you had me going there for a bit. I was waiting for that engine to start chucking things out from under the bonnet the way it sounded. Never heard of those cam-whatsits, but I suppose every modern engine will have a variation on the theme with the modern propensity for variable valve timing. Just goes to show that you still need a mechanical mind to sort through the bolt-on bullshit to find the culprit and sort him out. Man, those timing chains were tired - and I've never seen guides do that either. Makes you wonder what happened. Age? Well, half a million km ain't a spring chicken, so I suppose anything's possible.....but listen to the thing roar once she was all back together!
....and then you tidied her up. HUGE Kudos to your family, mate. You wouldn't believe a before and after were the same truck - honestly! The steering wheel - yep, have had to something similar with my daughter's Mazda 3 steering wheel. I ain't no seamstress either, but the steering wheel looks SO much better with a cover on - even if both of our stitching could have been a bit better, but you live and learn, eh? You got the colour choice spot on for it though!
Same with those alloy wheels. When you briefly suggested black, I grumbled under my breath. I cannot stand black wheels unless they are steel and under a hubcap. To me, wheels and stance make the car and you can never see black wheels properly as they blend in too much with the wheel wells and tyres - especially on the side of the car that's in shadow. Looks naff to me, but seems to be a fad for them at the moment though. I like the gun-metal colour - spot on again, mate. Draws your eyes to the stance but don't make a statement of their own like leaving them that goldy-silver would have. I had a feeling she'd buff up well too - and the completed package just makes the F150 look half her recorded mileage at a maximum.
She looks good, goes well, sounds magnificent and doesn't belch smoke. What else could you want? Well, me, I might titivate the exhaust so it rumbles a bit more and change the shocks out for something a bit firmer just to take the pudding out of the ride but not stiffen it up like a track car. She's still got to be comfortable to ride in......and with the budget reduced by not having to rebuild the beast, I reckon I could afford to do that. However, she's still a beaut and if I had no more budget for a while, I'd certainly be happy with it just as it is! Again, you'd never know what's on the odometer if you saw / heard that F150 coming down the road toward you!
Reckon she'll do the other half million km before needing a rebuild?

Know that nothing nowadays but there were 3 bolts that needed to be changed and torqued to spec every 80 k, if you didn’t they could break and you’d blow oil overboard at 100 psi, empty the sump in seconds.

I was thinking to myself how the hell does he know all this shit he doesn't work on new cars normally. Is this one a keeper?

Oil changes are critical on those motors . Do them early the older they get and plan chains etc . This ol girl got to 482000km before they failed so id say religious oil changes where made on her 🍺🍺👍

A massive job, but what a rig!! Yeah, modern F100’s just aren’t that common but I think with Dodge doing ok selling Rams, seems Ford Aus woke up.
Have you thought about respraying the gold trim to silver? I reckon that’d finish it off perfect with the grey wheels and black grill.

The 5.4 three valves had there issue's the older 4.6 was a work horse it was used in cop cars(Crown Victoria). The trucks were great but the 5.4 issue's made it very expensive to repair but a good mechanic could do the repairs and flip the vehicle and make a few bucks!😊
