Put Waddell up there with Smokey Yunick, Junior Johnson and others when it comes to doing things with a race car that no one else could. Legendary. Thanks for the video Dale Jr.
I love these stories of the golden age. I remember seeing this story unfold in my youth. Nice to finally hear this from the driver / owners perspective. It's a shame Nascar has turned its back on the fans who made them. Foreign cars do not belong in Nascar, wherever they're made. The manufacturer rules should be based on the country the Headquarters are located, and where the profits go, period. I quit watching, and spending money on Nascar in 2006.
On one of those pictures if you zoom in, you can see Cale looking straight out the passenger-side window when the back of the car got lift. One of the iconic racing photos.
I took my dad and uncle to the international motorsports hof in Talladega last year. It's amazing ton of history probably 200 racecars on display. My uncle is in his late 60's huge Cale fan. We're all walking through checking out all the cars and he's looking for a Cale car he goes "I haven't seen a Cale car! Where's the the bad ass section?" There wasnt one on display when we went. International motorsports hof get a Cale car!!!!!
I remember watching the qualifying flip and thinking I've never seen a race car flip like that. The words playing card were soon attached. Cale had this thing when he won, where he was almost apologizing for Waddell being so good.
I think by that time Waddell could put a Checker cab on the pole.......If you look at that 81 LeMans it looks small, small frontal area, small windshield and then the flush window on the back and Bobby Allison and Waddell recognized it right away.
I love the last statement: if you don’t want me to use it,don’t give it to me….. Ive felt that way just about every time I’ve ever climbed behind the wheel. I’m nearly 60 and still love the feel of 100 plus in the thighs….
ThankQ Dale. Always enjoyed watching your dad at Daytona in the 90s. Bought my straw hat. Back when you could park on Friday and get in line and park anywhere you want in the infield.
bobby was told after daytona to not bring that lemans to another race or we will make it to where you cant drive it- words from bobbys espn interview after daytona
i road in trucks for company i was a mechanic for as a load unload helper it sucked I got to sleep well one or co driver drove & either bumps or engine running would be hard for me to sleep! Walter said it took him months to get use to it! ( it was way for extra money making )
Cale probably had a crew chief , or a good friend to work the geometry of the front end and get the car weight like it should when he first started racing . But Cale knew how to mash that loud pedal , that was the main thing... Great interview.
I don't get why Dale didn't run a LeMans in 1981 insread of a Grand Prix, he would probably have won some races that year, Lemans was more aerodynamic all the way around than the Grand prix anyday, betyer looking too by far !
Dale interviewing without mike is good for Dale he gets a little more room to speak and ask questions. Love Mike hope he stops in from time to time though

There is a old story when NASCAR was messing with him about i forgot what gave him a hard time he fixed or modified it the way they wanted an went like 2 seconds faster ....then someone dared NASCAR ...go ahead go mess with those boys again .
I remember that qualifying lap when Cale took flight. Remember it like yesterday. Now I know the actual story from the man himself. Thanks Waddell. 🏁
@@1320pass Bud Moore. And toss in Junior Johnson!!!

What about Bud Moore?
Waddell is grossly underrated. Love hearing him speak
There's a old interview with Cale,He's said WELL ONE MINUTE I WAS A RACER THE NEXT I WAS EYEBALL TO EYEBALL WITH A DELTA PILOT 😂😂
Waddle has had some of the best driving his cars over the years. They all had plenty of speed. Those were the years of NASCAR I miss the most.

The Grey Ghost was the crowning achievement for Ol Waddell, however he set that car up, Bravo sir!
I absolutely love this kind of stuff
Cale was amazing to watch too
Pure gold! Period.
That pic of Cale flying was front page USA Today news paper, I loved that pic.

Lmao "if you dont want me to use it, dont give it to me" Cale sounds like he was ready to drive anything
He was a racers racer...one of the best ever

What a legend
I always wondered if Cale's flip at Daytona is what got the ball rolling on the Aerocoupe rear window that came a few years later.

That was real stock car racing
Waddell Wilson was a great one for sure.
So so so true if you put your mind to it it becomes possible
Guys from this era of racing were self made geniuses. I can listen any of them as long as they'll talk.
LEGEND!!!!!
I still have the NSSN with Cale upside down on the cover of it
These guys were cut from different cloth yall.
amen to that brother
Junior, you got to get Eli gold on and talk stories
What happened to the rest of the video where Cale Won in the LeMans ?
bobby was told after daytona to not bring that lemans to another race or we will make it to where you cant drive it- words from bobbys espn interview after daytona
Dale I would like your opinion on what happened to Carl Edward ?
First to break 200 mph was the Dodge Daytona in ‘69, not some Pontiac 😂
Baker in 69 was during practice (I believe), the first "official" 200 mph lap in qualifying or a race was Parsons in the Pontiac

It's crazy that the late great Cale Yarborough didn't know anything about a racecar.
Didn't know anything about a race car except how drive the hell out of it.
Cale probably had a crew chief , or a good friend to work the geometry of the front end and get the car weight like it should when he first started racing . But Cale knew how to mash that loud pedal , that was the main thing... Great interview.
They Probably didn’t want to work on that car because they might have been afraid it would kill Cale
I never understood why Ford never pushed for the Mustang and Chevy for the Camaro in the 80s/90s

Man that’s nascar. Punish you for being better. They ended up with a damn 1-1/2” spoiler on that lemans while everyone else had 4-1/2” ones

Why did he leave?
Where is Mike
@@happyjohn8256 thanks. Hadn’t heard.
