The most important part about this story is how all of these normal guys built a legend. I really appreciate the "normal guy" stories from all these interviews! Joe Mattes, Ty Norris, Kirk Shelmerdine and the Eurys just to name a few. It's like one small town called Nascar, North Carolina has all of these important events everyday!

Those weren’t normal guys. They had vision- their own, and that of the owner. Unusual guys building cars and engines for competition where they are “merely” part of the equation, part of the team, not the superstore. Unusual men have that capacity.

Yup. To me, the greatest tragedy is that DEI, with all its talent and promise for genuine success, barely got their opportunity to compete at full strength with the Founder battling Hendrick, Childress, Penske, Gibbs & Roush…

I was fortunate to be at the World 600 in May that year and was actually in Jrs pit before the race and happened to be watching one of the TVs in his pit box as TBS was playing a promo about Jr running his first cup race. I was also in Daytona in 1979, I saw Richard Petty win his 200th race and was in Homestead for Jimmys 7th championship. I am not bragging just feel very fortunate to see such major milestones in NASCAR history.

What a great story. I believe I'm getting the same feeling about Richie Gilmore that Dale Sr got in that he's just a great man and great leader and just needed someone to bring it out of him and it was the intimidater that did it all while Richie didn't really like the man.Thays just amazing to hear that story. I learned Dale had a a stern side but also a kind side that if he liked you he would go the extra mile to make anything you needed work.
Just a great man and so is Richie.
I live in sherrills ford NC and down behind me is a big shop with an 1800 Sq ft home inside it and the guy who owns it and lives in it worked as an engine builder for DEI and I can't remember his name but I'm thinking he said Bob when he introduced himself so now it's really got me wondering who he is. He's pretty well off cuz his place is really nice and he drives high dollar brand new trucks and he made sure I knew he wasn't rich that his shop and home and land and everything he has was from the money he made being a nascar engine builder. He's been building a 70's model chevy truck with a big engine and beautiful burgundy paint job. Sounds very powerful he went by yesterday in it.
He has been working summers in Arizona for the big car auctions but that's about all I know about him.
If I get a chance to talk to him again I'm going to ask him if he knew Richie Gilmore and Steve Hmeil and others at DEI.
Very interesting to hear Richie tell this story.what a great guy. Thanks Dale Jr and Mike

Your Definitely 100% correct.. I also believe had Theresa gave jr the 51% he was asking for DEI would still be one off the biggest teams in all of nascar.. I believe TRUEX JR would have been a lot more successful then what he was with dei all them years 1 win anyways Jr would have done whatever it took to keep him under the DEI Umbrella.. Michael would have been fired ASAP as jr and him didn't get along as teams.. The only thing that might had not happened would've been MEAN BRAD KESELOWSKI not sure had jr been running dei would he still had went after

Dale Sr. wanted to keep people like Richie Gilmore at DEI, because DEI was supposed to be his legacy to the next generations, that would outlive him.
Dale Sr. was a tough, hard nosed guy, who had worked hard through tough times. But that made him a strong man with great passion and great compassion. He cared deeply for his family, his friends, the sport, and his community. He truly tried hard to leave everything he could touch far better than he found it. Not many can say that.

Yeah, the panels look a little different but it's just body work, same big wing with a small front wing, and gobs of power. Hell in the 90's they were making 700-800hp. Now same 410ci block is making 950hp. That's real racing, more power, less rules, and caution laps don't count. This new age NASCAR is the same thing as a participation trophy if you ask me.

You have to remember Dale Sr has been gone for 22 yrs and the stories Richie is telling were a few yrs before that so I could tell he was struggling with some remember exactly how things went.
But I've never heard anything he talked about before and I understood the story well.
I could tell he was nervous and didn't want to upset Jr with any of it. Richie even said he didn't really like Dale Sr and really didn't want to work for him but he gave it a shot anyways.
He knew it wouldn't be easy to work for a man with Dale Srs stature and keep him happy but somehow he did. Dale really new he had a great man and leader and engine builder in Richie.
I wish we could have had Dale around all this time building the DEI team.
I believe it would have been right up there with Hendricks team.
Dale wouldn't have settled for anything less.
