True story here . The summer of 1975 me and my sister spent a Sunday afternoon with Davy , Clifford and Bobby and one of Bobby's mechanic working on Bobby's car . I remember being scared of the impact wrench when first getting there and Bobby chased me around the shop for a bit. I am 54 now will never forget it.😊
Yup Clifford died at Michigan in Aug of 92 before the weekend race events at MIS. We had Texaco Hospitality suite tickets for the Sunday Cup event and were supposed to meet Davey in the morning before the race. However, that didn't happen due to the sad tragedy.
Same here, he actually came up and hunted in the fall with us n WV(my uncle was regional dnr director) last few years b4 accident(He made NASCAR REAL LIFE to us)...FIRST TIME I HAD TO ACCEPT THE REALITY OF DEATH! I was just turning 13, n the race shop in Winchester picking up merch for my B-day when the news came over the radio in the shop, CRUSHING! If it hadn't been for cousins who lived in Dawsonville GA, I would have been done with NASCAR!
Sad passing in NASCAR Davey and Alan. Who knows what they would have accomplished. They especially Davey take away an Earnhardt Sr or Jeff Gordon championship?
Davey and Dale Jr will forever be my top drivers. Throw in Kyle Larson and Ernie Irvan as well. Thankful I was able to watch them race, as a kid. Now Larson as an adult.
I was a huge Davey fan, such a tragic loss. I still think the White/black/red/gold #28 Thunderbird during his rookie year is the best-looking paintjob ever. Great interview.
Such a small world the Allisons, Neil Bonnett, Red, Hut, Larry Mac all around Birmingham and Hueytown then bring in Dale Sr being best friends with Neil what a group of legends
Having listened to 1000’s of podcasts I am very impressed how far Jr’s interviewing skills have come. He has transcended beyond just being an athlete and a personality into an impressive broadcaster and journalist.
Grown man tearing up over here... it was absolutely impossible for that to happen. And then they said it was pilot error at first. I'm like "man, have you seen what he could do in a car? No way, no how." Small consolation when they discovered a flaw in the collective mechanism, but that didn't bring him back... For me, I stuck with the car and followed Irvan, just to have him crash at Michigan and never really be completely the same again. A least he's still walking, and that's a blessing of its own.
Agree 100% First time I had to see death as reality...Davey had hunted with us the last few falls b4 accident, it made nascar real life, then made death real life!
This man is 62 years old. Talk about good genes. I loved Davey Allison. After all of the horrific crashes he had and walked away, to hear that he died in a helicopter wreck was just crazy. I couldn't believe it.
Born & raised in Alabama and Davey was my guy. I was 13 when he passed and wept for days. Have gotten to meet Bobby and Donnie multiple times over the years and they are both just the most down to Earth people you could imagine. Typically, you will find them in the infield (along with Liz Allison) signing autographs, taking pictures, or selling some cool memorabilia at almost every Talladega race. I honestly had no idea that Hut married Donnie's daughter. Not sure how I missed that one. Davey was a special driver, and special person. I tear up just thinking about it. Every time i go to the museum at Dega and see his empty fire suit hanging on the wall, I cry. It is amazing how attached we can get to people we have never met. Can never forget Davey's smile.
I have a signed picture of the 28 car from Davey. He and Mark Martin were at Ford Headquarters in Dearborn MI prior to racing at MIS just before his death. He was my favorite driver at the time along w Mark. Two class fellows RIP, Davey forever 28....
I assume that Dale researches before he has guests come on the show but he seems like he is remembering all of the things and times. It makes the show seem like two old friends reminiscing. It is so enjoyable to listen to the show.
He lived it. Researched some, yes. But I'd say he lived it as a kid, as a driver, and a media personality in recent years. And brought so much enthusiasm and humor into these podcasts. And so far each podcast was pretty interesting.
Jr shows such enthusiasm here and reminiscing the past and I love it. It's stories like these that keeps me wanting to know more of what was going on back in the day in racing behind close doors. Things that weren't talked about are now coming to light and it's awesome. Almost like you can visualize being there. Thanks Jr. And Hut!
Dale might just be THE best talk show host in ANY genre. He is much more skilled in actually "interviewing" his guest than those Bozo's on Late Night TV, or even most "News" Host's.
Hut talked about that part about getting sick the day before Davey had the helicopter crash during The Scene Vault podcast. And about the Allison family taking Davey's death pretty hard, his brother Clifford got killed at Michigan in 1992, Bobby and Judy got divorced around the mid-'90s, Bobby shut his team down after financial problems. These chain of events probably really started when Bobby had that career ending wreck at Pocono in 1988. That was one family that endured so much. Bobby and Judy got back together around 2000 and actually went to Adam Petty's funeral and gave their support to Kyle and his then wife Pattie. As soon as I saw these videos posted, I just had to watch. I had to see what Hut had to say and get Junior's reaction. Great stories is all I hear from this podcast.
He literally seems to be hopping in his chair every time another name from the days of his youth is mentioned. I really hope those of them who are still alive also get to see this.
Wow, how small the world is when it’s explained. Great interview with Hut. Davey was my favorite driver. Texaco 28, that hurt so much. How terrible for Hut as a friend and Pam as a cousin? Dale, I know you miss your Dad too. Great interview.
My Dad was a big time Davey Allison fan back then. Anybody driving a Ford he supported. When I was 12 in 1992 I convinced my dad to buy us tickets to go to the Nascar June race at Michigan. He reluctantly did so even though driving from IL to Michigan wasn't his idea of fun. But the end result was he got to see his favorite drive not only win but dominate that race and he even enjoyed even more when he saw him put Earnhardt (my driver) a lap down. Guess it was the perfect father's day gift to him. That was our 1st Nascar race we ever attended. However, it was the last time we would ever see the #43, #7, and #28 on the same track and we didn't knew at the time that the '92 season was unfolding to be one of the best we ever witnessed.
Davey was my favorite driver also. I was 13 and I can still remember my parents telling me Davey was killed in helicopter crash the morning after an that they weren't joking because they seen it on the news.
The Michigan race was just a special race for Davey and Hut to finish 1-2. Being the biggest Allison fan ever,, I was so happy. Then.......... Clifford......... then Davey, To this day, I just don't know how the family got through it. More than ever, Bobby remains my absolute life hero.
I was in the crew of the last car to qualify for the 1987 Daytona 500 (Mark Stahl). It was Davey's first race and he had the fastest car in the field and was running everybody down. Would've been an easy win without early trouble. What a talent and was unstoppable with Robert Yates power.
Wow! So glad you did this video Davy was my favorite from before NASCAR. I sill wonder from time to time what he would have accomplished. Thanks for remembering!
I was lucky enough to meet davey @ New Hampshire in 1992. We were waking in the pit area after a race, when my dad grabbed me by the collar (gently of course) and told me to stand next to this Chevy Astro van. I was 9 years old and when I realized what was going on, I saw my idol in front of me. Davey was super nice and signed a 1:64 diecast of his car for me. Just over a year later, I was watching ESPN one night (think it was a Monday or Tuesday) when I saw a breaking news headline come up. I saw it was about Davey and that it wasn’t looking good, I got up and ran out to the garage (where my dad was) in tears. I knew my idol wasn’t gonna make it. I still think back to the day I met davey and think how lucky, I was to have met davey
Anyone that loved Nascar prob like myself had their favorite driver and pulled for him every race taking no bad talk from rival drivers and fans. Met Hut back in the mid 90's when he drove the #8 Circuit City car in Hoover, Alabama just prior to the Talladega race. Such a nice guy and totally down to earth. I really wish his racing career had been more successful at the Cup level. Thanks Jr. for inviting Hut to to the podcast.
The DJD we didn’t know we needed. Thanks for bringing Hut onto the show. Man is pretty well overlooked and forgotten but he ended up being a great guest and story teller. Cool guy.
Dave was my REAL gateway into the sport. I had gone to races since I was very young. But, I never had a favorite driver. I was 7, going on 8 when RYR and Davey started his rookie season in the then Winston Cup series. my mom was a bobby Allison fan. So, I became a Davey fan since I was her son and Davey was Bobby's. Davey was always one of the nicest young men and would even take time to talk to me as a kid. Still friends with some of his family to this day even though I don't even live in America anymore.
Never knew Hut's connection to the Allison family, and I was (am) a Davey Allison fan. The available information we now can find is mind blowing. One of your best segments Dale :)
I cried when Davey got killed. If I’m not mistaken he led the points six weeks after he passed away. I remember Dale Sr. and Davey switched cars in practice, when Dale got out the car he said that was the fastest car he ever sat his ass in. I also remember the statement you said leading the race at the 2001 July Daytona Pepsi 400 😉✌️
Dale and kelly: I find myself appreciating liking your cast even more than the current nascar races. The history is so interesting from you and young family is great as a fan there's no way we can know these things. I loved the program where Mike interviewed your wife about the ice bath. Although I miss you on the track and was a great fan of both you and your dad am happy you got out of the car and we did not loose you .as far as driving you became as good if not better than your dad .,you had the skill but you did not become the second intimatator . In the old days I worked at ge across from the track and we would walk over and watch them practice . Dad and I were fans of fireball Robert's the driver who drove Pontiacs like us. Dad though when we first move had to have a used Hudson hornet!! I lived and worked in daytona and deland. I would like to see johnson on the program and hear the truth about him and gordon. The good old days were great. I hated the King winning all the time with factory backing though. I was happy to see you voted to the hall of fame. You always were the pie piper and most favorite driver. I cried when you came back and won the July race it was a great moment in sports.take care and don't drink to much.we have lost many heros to alcohol and others to drugs waylon cash mantle.
I remember many a Saturday night after the races at Montgomery. When Davey Ronald,Donald,Kenny Hut and Jimmy Kitchens would stop at the Shoneys in Prattville before heading back to Birmingham. Those were some fun days. I was a teenager back then I am 50 now.
I met Hut years ago at Martinsville one of the most humble men I've ever met on the flip side of that I also met Geoff Bodine I was decked out in Dale Sr gear and he said only an idiot would wear "Ironhead" gear🤣
Ironhead gear? All this time later, Bodine still can't get over that feud with Earnhardt. Speaking of Dale Sr. gear, I recently got ahold of replicas that resembled his uniform from his Wrangler days. Good to know you had a good experience with Hut, though.
I never realized how young Hut is. I would hear his name but ,never saw him. I thought he was a older guy. Come to find out, I have a couple years on him. What I remember most about him is Benny Parson saying his name didn't come from football
I remember Hut in the late 70's, early 80's racing at Birmingham in the #7 Giant Auto Parts which was the family business. He was a regular winner around the South in those days. My Uncle raced in Street Stock back then. We later moved over to go kart racing around 1982 and afterwards. Loved the local racing back then, matter of fact we always went as far back as the 60's at Dixie Speedway in Midfield Al. when the Allisons, Red Farmer were already moved up from Florida and my Grandfather had a machine shop in his basement would do some spindle machine work for them. Great life back then❤
I was 10 when Davey passed away. The year prior, Davey won at what was then PIR, (Phoenix), and my Mom, Dad, sister and I snuck into the garage area after the race. There used to be that pedestrian bridge over what used to be turn 4 and back in the those days, security wasn’t as strict I guess, so we just walked up there and into the garage area. We walked the garage, took a ton a pics my Mom still has of those amazing cars from 1992. Anyways, my Mom and I separated from my Dad and sister, and we ended up near pit road and there was a huge crowd of people gathered. We made our way over to see what was happening and the most amazing thing happened; Davey emerged from the crowd right in front of us, walked right by us, looked at us, smiled and he patted my 9 year old self on the shoulder and ran up to the press box for more interviews or whatever I assume. It was over in seconds, but we couldn’t believe it, happened out of no where. We had no clue Davey was in the middle of that bunch of people and he just comes out of it and just smiled at me and patted me on the back as he ran by. I was a Kyle Petty fan at the time, but immediately a fan of Davey after that. I’ll never forget watching ESPN as a kid that day and seeing him being rushed into the hospital on a stretcher. Sounds lame maybe, but as a 10 year old kid who never experienced loss at that time in my life, I was crushed and didn’t understand or comprehend really why my favorite driver wasn’t on TV every Sunday anymore. Forever a Davey fan, loved this episode with Hut.
I can’t help but wonder did Hut, Davey and the guys go over to Beaches Speedway on Panama City Beach, back beach road and Allison Drive. It was a great race track. You could hear the cars running for several miles around. Great racing.
@Nicholas TV sit back an watch TV Nicholas! Your going to be the Next big TV personality like Steve Harvey when you get older. Just remember to give God the credit when you get there on TV every night!
Yes mam. I'm contemplating leaving my husband of 30 years to get with hutt to play a little putt putt. I won't be a victim I just want the last name Strickland . He can drive that vehicle with a big ole pickle. Come on.
Clifford actually passed away almost a year prior to Davey. I still have my Texaco Havoline #28 tee that I bought at the 1992 Winston 500, and got to see Davey win that one in person as well as the IROC race that weekend also.
21:14 - That's crazy, Cheers is in Concord about 10 minutes from the track. Me and my family would go there after the races on Sunday every year. I thought the food was good, we never had an issue. Crazy to think that Hut would have been in Davey's helicopter had they not got food poisoning Saturday night. Sorry, just hit close to home.
Love Davey Allison, that Thunderbird was mean , how he survived that crash at Pocono was amazing. Early 90’s NASCAR was my favourite , so sad when i saw the news Davey had crashed his helicopter, RIP .
Awesome People the Allison's ...knew them well ...used to go to the Old Phillips 66 garage and watched and listened to them test engines ...go Golden Gophers
My uncle used to drive for Yates and hauled Davey’s car/show cars back in the day. I miss being a kid and getting to climb in the cars and ride in them when he backed them off the trailer.
Love the history that Jr. gets and with all the drama that goes on NASCAR wise makes some of these shows tend to be sessions I don't watch. If some knew what racing used to be would not follow the garbage that goes on now. Keep on producing, stuffs good!
Thanks for this episode. I grew up a Bobby fan and became Davey as soon as he hit the seen. I'm in tears while I'm writing this. I wasn't just a fan I truly Loved these two Men. Pray for Bobby every day.👃😪
I've always been a Hut Stricklen fan. Great interview. I wanted to say, Aunt Martha is the best interview ever. She reminds me of my aunt's & cousins here in Eastern Kentucky. The Tommy Russell & Tony Furr...those s the types of guys we want to hear from. Try to get Pete Wright & those guys from that Era. Tony Glover would be a good one. Ritchie Barz. And Steve Hmeil.......I have listened to his interview several times both Herr & the Scene Vault.
I remember meeting Hut when I was really young at an autograph session in Calera. I couldn’t believe he knew my dad and grandpa. I thought I was so cool haha
Was not a Davy fan back in the day because I was a Huge DE fan but damn I loved watching him drive that 28 car with that iconic paint scheme. Miss him everyday and have always wondered what his career would have been like , how many championships he would have won and if he would have taken 1 or 2 from DE possibly. RIP Davey.
I was a fan of the whole Allison family. But I was more of an Alan Kulwicki fan having watching him race at Slinger Super Speedway, and many other tracks like Milwaukee. The weekend Alan was killed was bad. We saw the Allisons on the Tuesday in April in Greenfield, Wisconsin for the wake for Alan. Over the years we've seen so many die in racing. But then I've lived long enough to see many die from other means, I've managed to just outlive them. Among the racers, Larry Deitjens racing with Alan at Kaukauna, Pat Shouer in an ASA race In Indiana when a tire let go and hitting the inside guardrail and it entered the car killing him.
Hut looks younger than me and when he was in the huntfor the win i rooted for him and Davey A along with Alan K. Unless they were in Dale's way for the win. Rip 28, 7, 3!
I wish we still had 90s nascar

I remember that event at Collins Toyota I lived in the next town over. shame Davey left us he would have been a champion many times over
Met Hut back in the mid 90's when he drove the #8 Circuit City car in Hoover, Alabama just prior to the Talladega race.
Cool guy.
Ol'Hut. I hadn't thought of him in years. Good to see him on the show. I learned a lot from this episode.
This has got to be the best channel on RUclips. Sooooo many interesting things that us old school fans learn about.
I remember that year when Davey passed. Hurts my heart to this day. :(
Dave was my REAL gateway into the sport.
You should have Liz Allison on the podcast
Davey was a true Wheelman, if we didn't lose him ,who knows how good it would've been ,a more loved young there has never been .
I remember Hut in the #8 Circuit City car
Davey Allison was my 1st favorite racer..I just stuck with the car after he died. Rough being a #28/42 fan after Davey was gone.😢
Awesome stuff - great interview
Always been a huge Hut fan so it's great to see him and hear some of his stories
I met Hut years ago at Martinsville one of the most humble men I've ever met on the flip side of that I also met Geoff Bodine I was decked out in Dale Sr gear and he said only an idiot would wear "Ironhead" gear🤣
He was right. Only an idiot would
Ironhead gear? All this time later, Bodine still can't get over that feud with Earnhardt. Speaking of Dale Sr. gear, I recently got ahold of replicas that resembled his uniform from his Wrangler days. Good to know you had a good experience with Hut, though.
Well, it is Geoff Bodine. You should have said, well, I like winners..
We called him Geoff bowhine
Racing is fantastic .....but real life ...stories are best puts a human touch to our heros TY ...
Jr asking the hard questions. Great interview.
Great life back then❤
Wow, hearing JR say that hit home for me. After my Dad died, every decision I made was bad. Just very bad.
Awesome Pod cast Thanks JR 👍🏻
Great show as always.
Hut is one cool cat. I need to see this full episode.
Damn good show.. I really enjoyed the conversation…. Also I’m loving these new SunDrop #3 retro cans
What a great interview hut looks great
I can’t help but wonder did Hut, Davey and the guys go over to Beaches Speedway on Panama City Beach, back beach road and Allison Drive. It was a great race track. You could hear the cars running for several miles around. Great racing.
We took 80s 90s nascar for granted
No we took life an God for granted an now we're fixing to have to answer for it
@Nicholas TV what's going on
@Nicholas TV sit back an watch TV Nicholas! Your going to be the Next big TV personality like Steve Harvey when you get older. Just remember to give God the credit when you get there on TV every night!
Listening to Jr. damn sure reminds me
of my dad I'm old now was lucky then
Thanks Jr.
Great interview
Amazing Hut Stricklin looking this good for being 62 years old.
Yes mam. I'm contemplating leaving my husband of 30 years to get with hutt to play a little putt putt. I won't be a victim I just want the last name Strickland . He can drive that vehicle with a big ole pickle. Come on.
Another great show! Ty.
Clifford actually passed away almost a year prior to Davey. I still have my Texaco Havoline #28 tee that I bought at the 1992 Winston 500, and got to see Davey win that one in person as well as the IROC race that weekend also.
Incredible interview with Hut he’s got his fingerprints on the sport more than the sport knows
THOSE OL RAYBESTOS BRAKES SCHEMES WERE ICONIC, ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE #12 MILLER CARS, ❤ THE ALABAMA GANG!!!! THE GOOD OL GLORY DAYS!!!!
Davey was my driver, as was Alan Kulwicki. I wish they were still with us.
I often wonder how many more races Davey would have won had he still been around.
Like a crap ton of races and championships
Love Davey Allison, that Thunderbird was mean , how he survived that crash at Pocono was amazing.
Early 90’s NASCAR was my favourite , so sad when i saw the news Davey had crashed his helicopter, RIP .
Awesome People the Allison's ...knew them well ...used to go to the Old Phillips 66 garage and watched and listened to them test engines ...go Golden Gophers
My dad helped Kenny many times when the lived in Fort Myers FL, along with John too. I was born and raised there
My heart goes out to you brother.
My uncle used to drive for Yates and hauled Davey’s car/show cars back in the day. I miss being a kid and getting to climb in the cars and ride in them when he backed them off the trailer.
Dirty Mo has the greatest content.
I enjoyed this so much....Hut was bad man behind the wheel of a race car
Great interview 🏁🏁
Hueytown was a gold mine for cup talent.
the whole Winston Cup Nation felt the loss of Davey.
Pray for Bobby every day.👃😪
I remember it all so well…seems like yesterday
Man, when I was a kid, that #1 Hawaiian Tropic car that Donnie drove was my favorite.
Hut Was Cool Cat NASCAR Winston Cup Series Thanks For Uploading
I've always been a Hut Stricklen fan. Great interview.
I wanted to say, Aunt Martha is the best interview ever. She reminds me of my aunt's & cousins here in Eastern Kentucky. The Tommy Russell & Tony Furr...those s the types of guys we want to hear from. Try to get Pete Wright & those guys from that Era. Tony Glover would be a good one. Ritchie Barz. And Steve Hmeil.......I have listened to his interview several times both Herr & the Scene Vault.
You NEED and I mean NEED to get Bill Elliott on the show!!!!
I remember meeting Hut when I was really young at an autograph session in Calera. I couldn’t believe he knew my dad and grandpa. I thought I was so cool haha
I'm glad your finally happy in life bud
@@justinatkinson5265 opioid dragon has me no more
Always loved Hut.
I always pulled for Hut. But, damn, its hard listening to him. Spit it out dude!
Davey was one he'll of a racer I really miss him
I had a chance to get Davey Allison’s autograph at MI speedway and didn’t because I was a loyal Dale Sr. fan 4 ever!
Damn, loved it.
Kind of sounds like Dr Jerry Punch if you didn’t kno it was Hut
He also resembles a younger Ernie Irvan.
Davey was my favorite driver. One question I do have, was Davey wearing a helmet when the helicopter crashed?
Hut looks younger than me and when he was in the huntfor the win i rooted for him and Davey A along with Alan K. Unless they were in Dale's way for the win. Rip 28, 7, 3!
