Lots of hard work and dedication Ernie Irvin is one of those what if's in nascar shame we never saw the true potential of him could of won the 1994 Winston cup championship but we'll never know
What an emotional story. Kept it together until the reveal of the trophy replacements. That Yates 28 is my favorite "throwback" or "vintage" ride because of him and Davey. Great vid Brock!
Great documentary as always. I am happy to see Ernie and family still winning races locally in FL. His son Jared in the familiar 28 font, won just a few weeks ago at Citrus Speedway.
Fawk nascar used to be so good. I never tire of watching the races from 90s. So much tragedy, so many great stories, so many good finishes. Ernie definitely earned his spot in the sports history. He went through everything in a short career. Good job guys. I got a little teary eyed at parts cause this was sport was THE thing and i wish it still gave ne goosebumps today like it did as fan back in those days.
41:45-42:48 sadly nowadays a bunch of drivers are dirty to one another and wrecking each other. We need more of those callouts when those things happen. You’ll never see drivers make a press conference and make public apologies for intentional wrecks anymore either. Kudos to Ernie when it comes to making those dumb mistakes. What a man
Never was a fan of Nascar, mainly because here in Finland no one follows it and it's seen as low skill motor sport. Around 2013 i did few races in iRacing with truck and realized it's hard sport and many things must be spot on to win a race. Wery skilled drivers and teams! Thank you again Nascarman for the great content and education to us ignorant people like me 🙏
Every time I watch one of these RUclips documentaries I wind up with a new favorite driver. As a new fan in the year 2024, NASCAR and it’s rich history truly are something special.
Welcome! There are some great NASCAR RUclipsrs so there is a good amount of content to find here. Fans complain a lot in comments on race highlights, but don’t let the negativity get to you, that’s just the way it goes. Most fans are friendly
Here's a real "what if" moment: What if Ernie didn't cause that huge crash at Darlington? Dale Jarrett most likely would never have gotten the break(s) needed to become the 1999 champion.
I was thinking a what-if last night, had we not lost Allison and he stuck around for a decade, would we have seen him in the 38 Mars car? Also notable, Ernie left that 28 RYR team to go to the 36 mars car, which sponsor went to that same team which morphed from the 28 to the 38
As usual you've knocked another one completely out of the park. Ernie was my dad's favorite driver. I was fortunate to get to know Ernie and Jared racing karts at Ocala Grand Prix. I took my dad to citrus county to watch jared run the super late model. He got to meet Ernie and have a Earnhardt Lumina phone that he customized into The Kodak #4 get autographed. The Irvan's are great people. To facilitate that meeting for my dad was a class act by Ernie.
Irvan was a big part of my childhood fandom, growing up around racing. So cool to see a documentary, made by someone we all know will do it right, this long. Can't wait to send it to my dad. Thanks for the content as always, you crush it every time.
Didnt know that Mr. Irvan raced dirt in the crazy years. He finished 12th in his only World 100. Back then just making the race was really doing something. I wish i could find out more about where he raced and how competitive he was running against Freddie Smith,Duvall, Boggs,Buck Simmons,Rodney Combs and the man to beat back then, Jeff Purvis
Man I stumbled across this documentary today while learning my new smart TV. I enjoyed it so much! My first experience with NASCAR was getting a job as a mechanic in a TEXACO service center. Naturally I took an interest in the Texaco/Havoline #28 and learned about Ernie and Robert Yates. Davey had already had his unfortunate accident and Ernie was driving the 28 car. I have so many memories from that time of my live. I had actually built a small shrine for Ernie and Robert from die cast cars and other memorabilia I had found (including a copy of Stock Car magazine….No more swerving). I remember being on the road on vacation in Colorado when I heard about the crash in Michigan. I was so bummed!! Ernie could have won the championship that year and I was looking forward to seeing the joy that I have gotten so fond of seeing when any team wins a race. I learned many other things I didn’t know about Ernie and I got to see some old footage of Mr. Yates. Love it!!!
After watching for a half hour I really appreciate all the humorous segments! Fun to watch. I know about Ernie's crash at Michigan. Back then I followed his story very c!osely and was heartbroken over his severe injuries. Very best wishes to Ernie, always.
Holy crap this was riveting! This guy missed his calling, should be a legit documentary maker. This was so good I watched it twice now. Ernie is still the greatest outsider villain in NASCAR history, there was something about him that was so intense you couldn’t fabricate it. With Ernie nothing was fake or phony about him, walked to his own beat and didn’t care what people thought or who got in his way!!! You could make a movie about him NO BS!!! I had no idea about all the details, loosing his brother, his dad taking off on him, basically forcing his racing career by sheer determination ( was not going to be denied), his best friend dying, the ex wife ( that was gut wrenching), kids not being his. I thought I knew how complicated Ernie’s relations were in the garage but it was far more complicated than I thought. We all know the story or surviving and overcoming. Ernie will always have a place in my heart.
Helton was honestly one of the greatest figureheads NASCAR has ever had. Ernie was honestly just a class act of a man. Kim is the wife that every man hopes for. Just a lot of great people included in this video.
An amazing piece. Ernie was one of my favorites. Burned that #4 Kodak car into my memory as a kid and he made it one of my favorite paints of all time.
The amount of information and detail in your videos is astonishing! I was a huge Ernie Irvan fan in the 90’s and I’ve still never got over the flat tire at The 1994 Brickyard 400 & what happened two weeks later
One of the most underrated NASCAR drivers (and what ifs) ever. I still can’t help but wonder how epic the 1994 championship battle would have been if Irvan didn’t have that life-threatening crash at Michigan…to say nothing of how he could have been one of Jeff Gordon’s toughest rivals if that crash never happened…
I grew up watching Irvan as a kid at Stockton 99 speedway. He was always a favorite and when he made it to the big show, I was thrilled. When he moved to the 36 I followed along as a fan. M&Ms was an awesome sponsor and treated him great, which made me an M&Ms fan. When he retired I stayed a fan of the car for better or worse. He's onebof the greatest ever.
Yes, this is one of the best. Brock Beard narrates a bunch of the documentaries here on this channel. The two of them together is absolutely top notch.
I have a neat piece of documentation from MMM. The letterhead states "I will not chastise my crew for the remainder of the year" signed below by Ernie Irvan.
Ole Swervin' Irvin couldn't quite race through that grass the way Earnhardt did, lol. I always liked Ernie. Without a doubt, the 2 very best autobiographies I ever read were in the following order: Johnny Cash's auto-bio, and then #2: was Ernie Irvin's. It's been long out of print for decades now, but if anyone stumbles across a used copy in decent condition, it should be a bargain price, but the book is phenomenal. Trust me. And just like Johnny Cash, Irvin left nothing out.......he told it all....and he told the truth. Both men went through hell and back in their lives on multiple occasions, just as both men nearly died.
I was at Michigan that weekend, drove down from Ontario with my family. I seem to remember his souvenir trailer being shut down after the wreck, or maybe not even open on the Sunday. I could be remembering wrong as I have a mean case of CRS.
So if Ernie Irvan hadn't caused that wreck at Darlington in 1990 then Dale Jarrett wouldn't have gotten his opportunity in the 21 for the Wood Brothers and gotten the kick start he needed to turn his career in the Cup series around.
Wow as a Jarrett fan I didn’t know that. Also that wreck was very similar to Steve Parks’s wreck in probably the exact place. Also suffered serious head injuries.

Rusty. Dale Sr. And DW. They always at together up front in the driver meetings. They always sat together. No matter what happened the race prior. Pretty cool 😎 I heard they were Always cuttin up and laughing
I remember the year he had the crash at Michigan.....Up to that point he was killing it, almost every race was a win or top 5. I was at the Glenn when he got 2nd, He was well on his way to winning the championship that year
I honestly wish I could say with confidence who best compares to Ernie today. he shares a lot of similarities with some drivers and also shared a lot of promise

Ernie is one of the most underrated drivers in NASCAR history. In 1994 he was giving Dale Earnhardt a run for his money in the championship race before the Michigan crash.
I remember when Neil came back to host "Winners " and we were so happy for him and glad he was doing well - I must admit it got me - So many of my heroes are gone - This was a tough week - With Pete and Kris moving in on I guess I was ready to let it go- Who's gonna fill their shoes ? No one ....
Ernie was the man that showed Robert Yates what his cars would do , when Ernie was hurt I called his mother to find out how he was doing, he was missed on the track and I still think about what he would have done if he wouldn't have had that wreck .
As someone who is kicking 40 in the ass, I got my first camera for Christmas of 1990. 1991 came, my old man telling me that was the film in my camera, and I was an Irvan fan. Crazy thinking when Ernie was forced to retire from his second MIS injury I was forced to chose someone else. That would be Smoke himself, Tony Stewart.
It's kinda funny had Ernie iravn won the championship had things worked out for him against Dale Sr he probably would have been you're 1994 championship and Dale Sr would only have 6 piston cups.

In the first 20 races that year, these were his stats: - 3 Wins - 13 Top 5 Finishes - 15 Top 10 Finishes - 5 Poles - 1,777 Total Laps Led - Avg. Finish of 8.95 He was having his career best season.
Knew about the professional ups and downs for Ernie but never knew about some of the stuff he went through in his personal life (such as losing his brother as a small child or learning that his first wife was not only cheating on him but that he wasn't the biological father of either of the boys she gave birth to).
Irvan was something else to watch. You could tell Larry Mac that very highly of his ability. If not for a freak crash hed probably be a 1 or 2 time champion.
This is maybe your magnum opus. I'm surprised you didn't mention the 1996 DieHard 500 crash and the barroom brawl, which from my understanding was the last straw for Texaco. I'd have maybe included a clip from the Alan Jackson "Who's Cheatin' Who" video where all the top Ford drivers including Irvan had a makeshift race, although I don't believe that video shows any of the drivers...
43:40 I really want to know what was going on through Rusty's head during that moment when Irvan addressed the crowd. Judging by him being the only one not clapping, I'm sure it wasn't happy thoughts.
The story of NASCAR giving Ernie replicas of the trophies lost in the fire is one of NASCAR's most wholesome stories. 😊
that Had me Especially tore up.
Mike Helton, for good or not, is a Stand up cat from most of the things ive seen him mentioned about

A 2 hour doc on Irvan? SIGN ME UP!!! My dad knew him and his wife pretty well. Grandpa raced against Vic Irvan in supermodifieds and hardtops

Yep. Jared and Ernie were also racing shifter karts regularly at Ocala Grand Prix until it closed.
Ernie Irvan's a Motorsports Legend!
I never knew about the house fire, lost mementos, and replacement trophies. That brought a tear to my eye.
He really needs to be in the hall of fame ASAP

This is maybe your magnum opus. I'm surprised you didn't mention the 1996 DieHard 500 crash and the barroom brawl, which from my understanding was the last straw for Texaco. I'd have maybe included a clip from the Alan Jackson "Who's Cheatin' Who" video where all the top Ford drivers including Irvan had a makeshift race, although I don't believe that video shows any of the drivers...
Ernie and steve park at the two biggest what is in stock car racing. Promising talent derailed by major injuries
Great stuff ! Is that the NR2003 garage sounds at 1:30:53 ? Nice
@ryanbauer2893 good catch, I sneak that in a few different videos
Ernie irvin was dangerous
43:40 I really want to know what was going on through Rusty's head during that moment when Irvan addressed the crowd. Judging by him being the only one not clapping, I'm sure it wasn't happy thoughts.
