Ralph and Ned raced each other decades before the Dale and Dale show at 1993 Daytona 500, the Earnhardts and the Jarretts are two of the most interesting families in automotive racing history.
The genetics are incredibly strong in that family. If you look at Ralph, through his children and grandchildren there is no doubt that they are Earnhardts.
I first heard of Ralph Earnhardt in Emplemon's video, "There'll never be another Dale Earnhardt," where it talks about what Dale always said, how Ralph was Dale's inspiration to get into racing. At last we get to see why he felt that way, cudos :)
The only thing I knew about Ralph was from Lost Speedways, DALE The Dale Earnhardt Documentary from 2007 and ESPN's Biopic where he was protrayed by J.K. Simmons, yes THAT J.K. Simmons. This is probably the first documentary dedicated to the first Earnhardt and I liked it.
I feel very privileged to have seen Ralph drive at Shelby Fairgrounds. It had rained Concord out one night and they gave all the Concord and/or Metrolina regulars the time to get there. Another time they came due to the track owners brother (I think) had fallen out of the water truck and died and the race was cancelled at Concord or Metrolina. I do believe Dale was driving Hobby, a # 18 the same nights. Haywood Plyer was there also.
Ralph paved the way for people like Ned Jarrett, Jr Johnson and Cale's daddy to show them how it's possible to win. Not that it's a downfall, he made more money but maintained family life which was precious to him. He won more races than anyone that has raced! What a man.
Ralph’s win totals wouldn’t surprise me. Considering his level of excellence, and opportunities to race longer in the south. Drivers like Steve Kinser, and Doug Wolfgang come to mind with those win totals. Thanks for making this!
As a Dale Jr fan, this is an incredible video. You knocked it out of the park once again NASCARMAN! I’ve always been interested in Ralph Earnhardt’s career, and you did it in both a respectful and eye catching manner. I think Dale Jr himself would concur with my statement given his response to your post on Twitter/X introducing the video.
Legacy Of Ralph Earnhardt Was Named Inductee National Motorsports Press Association Hall Of Fame In 1989 At Darlington South Carolina Thanks For Uploading
This is a well overdue documentary.. I thought I knew a lot about the man until this. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I did get to meet Martha at the Earnhardt family home. She was so sweet and informative as I made a video of that time on the front porch... It's definitely a cherished item now..
GREAT video of a GREAT driver/mechanic. I have been waiting a long time for this video. It explains a lot and shows us things we didn't know. Now I know for certain and for sure why his son turned out to be the legend that Dale is. Grandfather, Father and Grandson are all legends. For what they did on the track, and off of it. Thanks for this video. GOD bless all 3 of them.
*At least* 209 NASCAR-sanctioned wins.... *Plus* a national title... *Plus* numerous wins as an engine and/or car builder... *Plus* the reason two Hall of Famers exist... Ralph belongs in the NASCAR HoF. Period.
You said it best. It’d be the first direct family TRIO of racing legends - Grandfather, Father and Son, to so be honored - and from 3 very different NASCAR historical eras…
Man this is an excellent video. Informative and thorough with information not easily accessible. This is the exact kind of video RUclips was built on back in the day. Thank you for this history lesson, I very much enjoyed this
To any true NASCAR fan this video is priceless it' just a shame he never lived long enough to see all his son's accomplishment's this family WAS NASCAR ........RIP Ralph and Dale
Beautifully done - how wonderful to see all three generations leading a race on our TV screens, and technically winning as the DQ of LeeRoy Yarborough makes Ralph Earnhardt the winner! 📺🏁❤️🎉M.
My Dad raced against Ralph with Allen Rankin and Don Tilley as his drivers at Hickory Motor Speedway Ralph was hard to beat after watching this now I see why back then I was 10yrs old now I’m 70
I sure know that feeling..I'm in my late 70s..Still enjoy the races and life in general.. Ralph Earnhardt, Dale Sr. and Dale JR. were always my favorites...❤😊
The flagman wearing the beanie hat @8:47 flagged some big NASCAR races at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedways beginning in the late 50's when it first opened.
thank you for putting it all together and allowing world to get a better idea of how, who, where, when this earnhardt legacy that goes back waaaay further than most fans, including me, realize. Next up…Jim Pachal?
Ralph Earnhardt was as good as Dale always said. They all got it. Ralph Earnhardt, Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Kerry Dale Earnhardt RalphDaleEarnhardt Jr. Jeffery Earnhardt Bobby Dale Earnhardt, 🏁
Thanks for bringing together a beautifully produced, comprehensive Ralph Earnhardt history lesson, nascarman! I’ve waited a very long time for such a respectful video honoring his unbelievable racing achievements. As a lifelong Dale & Dale Jr. race fan, I’ve always said there’s a missing 1st piece to that trio of NASCAR superstars that fans deserve to know all about - and that was Ralph, the Earnhardt Family patriarch. God bless their racing legacy…
Very cool seeing and hearing Ralph. All I have left of my dads voice is a cassette tape that he had recorded his grocery list on, for my sister to go do his shopping. His hand was injured and he couldn't write, so he recorded it on a little RadioShack portable cassette deck. Its funny how comforting it is to hear my dads voice, even if it is just a grocery list.
I paused the video to look at the roll cage in the early days of his career and it’s scary to think that passed as any type of safety measure because half the pipe(and I do mean pipe not tube!) was not welded and there was a 3/8” gap wear it was not welded!
Hey man, great work! As a diecast collector, this video makes me want to find a Ralph Earnhardt one. By the way, where did you get that interview with Dale and Jack Arute? I'd like to hear the complete interview.

As a builder of tri five drag cars, yeah you shouldn't have to mechanic at the track. My bucket list includes sick week, in my gumball build, then maybe a cannon ball!
Honestly seeing an Earnhardt in a Ford just seems wrong... Probably because Ralph's son and grandsons famously drove Chevrolets... Although his great grandson broke that tradition

I wish Jeffery could get a full time ride.
Seems like yesterday we heard Ned saying, " it's the Dale and Dale show, and you know who I'm pulling for "
I wouldn’t be surprised if Dale Jr watches this video everyday, with good reason his grandpa was quite a guy.
Not near the guy his dad was.
Love to see him interview some of the historians.
His x post is why I’m here 😂
He was a go getter fer sure

Thats crazy. Ralph flipped his car in turn four in the worst wreck in nascar history at Daytona and years later Dale was killed in turn four.
The anecdote about the fans throwing soda bottles on the track almost feels like foreshadowing for Talladega 2005.
Junior got robbed in that race. Absolute travesty. Would’ve been 5 in a row there I think too.

@Home-11 Ralph won lots and lots of races, for sure. But for all time short track late model type wins, you have to look at Dick Trickle.
Cale’s daddy? Cale Yarborough? If you are referring to Leeroy, they are not related. Yarbrough and Yarborough are quite different
