NASCAR got butthurt because someone found an advantage by simply just experimenting with everything that they were given to race with, they didnt cheat, they just found a unique set-up that worked out well. Brilliant if you ask me 🦀👍
"I'm still not a very big fan of these things, I can't stand to drive them. They suck." -Kyle Busch, when he won the very first COT race (Bristol, March 2007)
This is a common theme with NASCAR. One of the teams try something different and NASCAR has to toss in a rule change to ban it last minute. Not to mention they try to level the playing field with tons of restrictions and cookie cutter templates for unibodies. Smokey Yunick, Junior Johnson, Roger Penske--These guys were called cheaters, but in reality, all teams were looking for the slight edge. Junior Johnson was most well known due to the number of things he and his team tried to experiment with in the early days. Smokey Yunick had many "violations" with his 67 Chevelle before the Daytona 500 and wasn't allowed to enter until he fixed the mods. His Chevelle is on display at the Motorsport Museum where you can see all of the things he did to it. Roger Penske acid dipped one of his cars and beefed up the roll cage to lighten the load then rotated the car in his racing team so the officials couldn't tell which car was the acid dipped one. Part of the problem is the manufacturers whining and crying about their competitors having an unfair advantage as mentioned in the video. Rather than make improvements on their product, they bitch piss and moan about it until a rule change is made. Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles didn't complain about Ferrari having the unfair advantage when they competed at Le Mans. Despite being humiliated, they worked tirelessly to correct the issues and faults of the GT40 and went on to win the first Le Mans defeating Ferarri. To me, racing is about looking for the faults seeing what the competitors are doing and finding innovative solutions. Manufacturers should look at what their competitors did and look for solutions to get that edge. If you think about it, Ford and GM may have had a better chance against Mopar in 1970 had they tried building a body kit for their muscle cars to improve aerodynamics and keep up with Petty's Superbird. Instead, they just complained how the Superbird was unfair and NASCAR had to ban the car as a result. Overall, I love this video. Great insight on the whole thing.
It isn't NASCAR anymore, that ended with common templates. I'm happy as hell to have seen NASCAR when it was racer vs racer, not racer vs NASCAR, and creativity was king! The most epic, and iconic races ever raced were in those days. They should start calling it NERFCAR.
Penske and others running Dodge the last 2 years that Dodge raced, they were getting things right. Even Darrell Waltrip said in one race that ones using Dodge had the fuel mileage figured out and were able to stay out longer. It was more interesting to watch back then. There was an article that I read that said one of Dodges lead engine guys went to Toyota and that was what got their racing program going. Supposedly there are lawsuits as well for the proprietary technology and such. It was a surprising article for sure.
Remember when NFL stood for "No Fun League". This is what NASCAR is today, you're practically begging people to cheat. I don't miss Smokey Yunick or Chargers with ironing boards for wings but this is getting boring real fast. I'd rather have a $3 beer and a hot dog at a dirt track than sit through hours of this.
That’s what made nascar so exciting. Each automaker trying to come out with the best most aerodynamic body style. Each fighting for the best. The Pontiac Grand Prix, Monte Carlo, the Buick Regal, Ford Thunderbird. The 87 Carlo is probably my favorite. The 80s model ThunderBird was also pretty sharp. I haven’t sat and watched a NASCAR race in a little while so not sure if they went back to that. Doubt it, but would be nice.
It’s not about cars, drivers, or even fans in the seats….It’s about maximum ad revenue from tv time…Whatever needs to be manipulated torward that goal will happen.
Love these kinds of videos. Should do a video covering multiple older cars that pushed the boundaries that are harder to make a video about by themselves like Mark Martin's 3-shock car and the fake Taurus and maybe Smokey's 7/8 car.
I remember this era like it was yesterday with how the rear end was kicked out & dog tailing (Yawed Out) down the straightaway’s & one track that i noticed how much the cars were yawed out was “Pocono Speedway”.
The trailing mist behind the car should expand and disperse a lot more, almost exponentially, and have still misty air behind, even a steam/ fog effect sometimes
The Cup cars are pretty much straight and all the same now. I've always hated skewing bodies all weird, for aero advantage. I get it works, but I hate the look. The trucks are notorious for the right sides being all skewed and hung out to the right, from the "cab" back. Build them straight!
I agree with car symmetry while standing still, at the VERY least from the top down(they really DO just look better), but as far as how it drives down the track, that should be all up to the team and driver outside of safety concerns.
Between the COT cars... liveries, i think the Impala actually does look good. But the Camry, Fusion and Avenger all look ugly to me (though the road-legal Fusion looks nicer than the COT)
Take a look at when NASCAR rapidly lost its viewers. Oh gosh it’s when common templates happened! The COT just looked like a joke and now the horrible technology of the gen 7 car, that has nothing to do with a stock car (according to the race car condition, not according to the street car condition) but is more like a crappy GT car that’s way to heavy.
It’s a shame that car suffered damage he should have won that race with that set up. But I’m glad they banned that set up because it looked ridiculous going around the track. That Indy race with all the cars line that was insane.
How is a template a formula for racing. Might as well be Formula one Euro government guideline racing. NASCAR racing was supposed to be STOCK cars and be true to their history. All thats gone now.
I love this video. Great work nascarman! I can see that the original video is still up at the moment. Is this going to remain the case or are you gonna take it down at some point?
I'll keep the original up because of how much it's recommended, then when people realize the audio cuts out, hopefully they'll see the link to this video.
I haven't watched a Nascar race since we lost Dale. Looks like I haven't missed anything. When the cars were real and the crew could make changes. Things were great to watch. Watching 30 of the same car driving in circles seems dumb. It's not a competition between manufacturers, crews and drivers anymore. It's a competition for Nascar to make money. I'm surprised that Nascar still exists. Probably won't for much longer
Basically all top series in a world of racing has been suffering too strict rules about 3 decades now. Think Formula 1, the series name screams innovative thinking but it's all long gone. Series that run with base of production car? They need some rules for what can be changed for safety and aero but make it look like the production car and It'll force car manufacturers produce good and beautiful cars for the public use. That's how you make history and legends. All the world car manufacturers are tied in same stock holders and that's why motorsport is only burning rubber on it standstill and not going naturally forward. Mafia is ruling, mafia it is 🙏 As an European, huge thank you for the effort & time it must take to cast light on all those great American racecar teams and drivers! So many great legends you have there in land of free! Love you!

informative video, absolutely horrendous music choice, you have a great voice and you are very articulate. But the music is overpowering and too much lol
Nascar racing has sucked for decades, its just as boring to watch as golf. It should be brought back to its roots and the cars should be close to actual factory cars.
@@lukefrommacdonalds72 They bear little mechanical resemblance to stock dealership cars anymore. NASCAR = National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.
Due to an audio glitch with the original upload, this video had to be reuploaded
Man. I thought it was something juicy like a stupid copyright infringement. But its just a audio issue
@g_men2121 same I thought the nascar copyright issue happened again
I choose to believe you knew we'd watch it again 😁 Great video, even the second time!
Where was the audio glitch in the original video?
ok

💀
Nascar is so juvenile and woke it no longer has any fans.
People who support woke/satanic Nascar are crazy.
NASCAR got butthurt because Formula One practices were creeping into their walled garden
No one ever said they cheated. The win stood. There were no fines.
All they did was close the loophole

Automotive Design used to be a part of the competition. Even in F1, the cars have a lot of differences.
Though the wheelbase, roofline and rear end are still equal, front bumpers can be manipulated more freely

Still a great vid every time I watch it love you bro
If i remember Kahne was the fan vote that was a great race too.
this is whats killing NASCAR, so many rules, they lost me when the quit using production cars
Oh no not rules, crybaby
They lost you in the 1970's?
I like the home video contrast with the SPEED commentary, nice video

The car of Tomorrow was the death of NASCAR. Nothing but scripted fantasy since.
Nearly every NASCAR and F1 rule was made to slow cars down.
reupload to fix an audio glitch but the video still containts an audio issue.
the craftiness of the American racer knows no bounds
and then Dodge left NASCAR and never came back! 👏 😂
Gliders, sliders? lmao

NASCAR has worked so hard to destroy this sport.

Beautiful stuff by the Penske team
if a hendrick car showed up like that, it wouldnt have been banned

Nascar sucks because they constantly try and kill innovation and it is no more apparent than nascar today.
Yeah let them innovate and see who has the most money, works great for formula 1 bahaha nimrod
There's a cost cap in f1... Innovation is still allowed.

Racing wise, CoT NASCAR was peak NASCAR. Yeah I said it.
Sir Brock
I stopped watching NASCAR after I got bored
If you build it, I can drive it. 🚗 😅
I think templates ruined the sport. Not seeing recognizable drivers and brands consistently, it took away a lot of the personality
Whos Gary Nelson and has he have his brain checked ?
It’s just not racing any more, they destroyed @NASCAR and I stopped watching all of it soon as the new cars came out.
NASCAR is so watered down nowadays I quit watching years ago.
Nascar is stupid. They may as well go race go carts. Nobody will get hurt and they will all have the same lawn mower engine.
