This looks more genuine than so many of these "restoration" videos on youtube. The guy didn't show how smooth he is with a lathe and turn a new handle and engrave or mirror polish the blade. Actually something one could use. good job
I did something like that a couple of years ago. I got an old putty knife from a car boot sale for 50 pence, about 60 cents, and cleaned , reshaped and sharpened it I did all the work with hand tools - abrasive paper, files, hacksaw, oil stones and a strop It has made an excellent leather skiving knife Look for an old putty knife or filling knife made from forged spring steel if possible, not stamped sheet
Did the same thing except only reshaped the metal and handle I did not remove or take apart. Some of the putty knives are made of very good steel. Min fits around my neck in a wood sheath stays in place with a magnet and is very handy such as yours will be. Nice looking tool !!
Hi there. I'm really not sure about the kind of steel. But the blade itself is not long and me personally I am specifically using it for cutting leather. I did not temper the blade itself after cutting it from the putty knife but for leather cutting it works just fine. I am having sometimes difficulties cutting thicker leather (4mm +) but I do that rarely and if so I use another knife. for delicate leather cutting it works really well.👍
we are going to have slim pickings over the next few weeks months as everything closes ,this shows what can be done with what we have , good job we all hoard !! excellent restoration as always !
I love the video, and I thought the idea of making a knife out of an old putty knife was an ingenious idea. I did notice one thing in your video that I think is important to mention, the latex or nitrile gloves you are wearing while you are cutting the blade into shape. My concern is that if you catch a metal chip that lands on the glove and it melts it to your hand. Just a suggestion, but you might want to use gloves that can't melt when you work with metal cutting and grinding. Thanks and keep up with the great content
N’y other glove would be dangerous to wear as the rotary tool could catch it and drag his whole hand in the tool/blade. Rubber glove will simply rip. You are imagining risk where there isn’t and suggesting a far more dangerous alternative.
Beautiful work, love to see a cool, unique channel. Saw your post on Reddit btw, so nice to see someone that isn't making a low quality gaming channel. Your channel will become popular man. I c you at 100k by the end of next year keep up the good work
Hi Ijul, hope you're well. To derust the tool I was using water electrolysis at the beginning. Afterwards a set of brushes and a wheel sander. The electrolysis wont work by itself , you need to put salt in - adding salt into the water will break the electrical neutrality of water molecules and will let them carry the electric charge. And by salt I mean Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or washing soda. Better to disolve the salt in water first. 👍
@@ijulmahardika8923 You need to disolve it in the water. Usually it is sold as powder. Stirr until all is disolved.Take a look at the following videos. I am showing how to disolve the soda in those. AllFlavor Workshop no experience in knife making, my knowledge only come from the you tube videos which you have probably seen yourself, I did think that if you were into metalwork a hardened edge could mark metal for you as well.
Hi J, I was thinking about that but on the other hand I dont think it is necessary. I was just using a grinder to cut the steel and for leather working purposes works just fine. Thanks for the tip.! 👍
Hi Steve, I used electrolysis to get rid of the rust. I used an AC/DC adapter. It is specifically designed to accept a certain AC input (usually the standard output from a 120 V AC outlet in your home) and convert it to a particular DC output. Direct current allows for the anions to deposit in the anode and for the cations in the cathode. Take caution with this!
@@AllFlavorWorkshop You should be happy, you did a great job no doubt.....However I have to ask why you didn't stain the wooden handle to improve the looks? Just a question mind you, because you did such a fine job otherwise. Anaco, Anz.
@@buddyhutchins3782 Honestly, I was thinking about that but I decided to go with the original color of the handle. just gave it a bit of oil. Or possibly next time to go with a completely new one anl make the grip better.

Hi Андрей. I honestly don't know.. Not that I havent tired but I has its cons. Takes longer in comaprison with electrolysis and the result is usually not that good as using electrolysis. But it works as well and definitely it is one of the options how to do it..
Agreed. Though it really depends on gloves. Definitely not heavy gloves which could get tangled in the wheel. But the ones I am using are nitrile examination gloves. Powder-free, latex-free suitable for use in laboratories and when cleaning chemicals and disinfectants. They snap really easily.

That "putty knife" is a scraper! A putty knife blade is rounded on one side, angled on the other. Unless its a straight modern putty knife, which would be narrower than that scraper.
