  • In this restoration video, I am transforming an old putty knife into a kiridashi knife. allflavorworkshop.com/

    For a change, I decided to make a tool transformation video and experiment a little bit with knife making and turn the knife into a kiridashi alike knife. I got the putty knife for a 1$ at a flea market. The tool was rusty and overall in quite a bad shape. The blade is thin quite bendable and great for cutting leather and leather crafts.
    OLD PUTTY KNIFE INTO KIRIDASHI | HAND TOOL TRANSFORMATION
    In the beginning, I used water electrolysis made of an old notebook power adapter to remove most of the rust. I cut the rough shape of the kiridashi knife using a cutting wheel. Afterward used a round and flat file to make the exact shape of the knife. Further cleaning, sanding, and polishing were handled by sanding discs and sandpapers in various grits ranging from 120 to 600. I used a flat file to make the blade and a whetstone for its sharpening. Before the assembly, I oiled both the wooden and the metal parts to prevent the kiridashi knife from future rusting. This was one of the restoration/tool transformation projects I had the most fun with. The project is quite simple you don't need special equipment to do that (electrolysis can be replaced by hand sanding or a de-rusting solution) and as for the kiridashi knife bendable blade is perfectly applicable for cutting leather.
    I like to create repair and bring old tools and appliances back to life and inspire others to create something with their own hands. Hopefully, I inspired you and could help with your projects. Creating is fun!

    - Used a round file and a double-cut flat bastard file to cut and form the exact shape

    I did something like that a couple of years ago. I got an old putty knife from a car boot sale for 50 pence, about 60 cents, and cleaned , reshaped and sharpened it
    I did all the work with hand tools - abrasive paper, files, hacksaw, oil stones and a strop
    It has made an excellent leather skiving knife
    Look for an old putty knife or filling knife made from forged spring steel if possible, not stamped sheet

    I love the video, and I thought the idea of making a knife out of an old putty knife was an ingenious idea. I did notice one thing in your video that I think is important to mention, the latex or nitrile gloves you are wearing while you are cutting the blade into shape. My concern is that if you catch a metal chip that lands on the glove and it melts it to your hand. Just a suggestion, but you might want to use gloves that can't melt when you work with metal cutting and grinding.
    Thanks and keep up with the great content

      N’y other glove would be dangerous to wear as the rotary tool could catch it and drag his whole hand in the tool/blade. Rubber glove will simply rip. You are imagining risk where there isn’t and suggesting a far more dangerous alternative.

    What is the circuit used for rust removal? And is it sraight out of the mains?

    • @AllFlavorWorkshop
      @AllFlavorWorkshop  4 года назад +1

      Hi Steve, I used electrolysis to get rid of the rust. I used an AC/DC adapter. It is specifically designed to accept a certain AC input (usually the standard output from a 120 V AC outlet in your home) and convert it to a particular DC output. Direct current allows for the anions to deposit in the anode and for the cations in the cathode. Take caution with this!

      @AllFlavorWorkshop  4 года назад +1

      Hi Ijul, hope you're well. To derust the tool I was using water electrolysis at the beginning. Afterwards a set of brushes and a wheel sander. The electrolysis wont work by itself , you need to put salt in - adding salt into the water will break the electrical neutrality of water molecules and will let them carry the electric charge. And by salt I mean Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or washing soda. Better to disolve the salt in water first. 👍

I did not temper the blade itself after cutting it from the putty knife but for leather cutting it works just fine. Harden edge?

    • @AllFlavorWorkshop
      @AllFlavorWorkshop  3 года назад

      Hi Graham, I was thinking about it but I decided that for leather crafting might not be necessary. What's your experience? Thanks for the comment.

      AllFlavor Workshop no experience in knife making, my knowledge only come from the you tube videos which you have probably seen yourself, I did think that if you were into metalwork a hardened edge could mark metal for you as well.

    You can make a similar knife from a steak knife from the second hand shop. They are 10 cents here, without rust. Salvation Army has a vast assortment, stainless or hi-carbon. Much faster way to go.

      Agreed. Though it really depends on gloves. Definitely not heavy gloves which could get tangled in the wheel. But the ones I am using are nitrile examination gloves. Powder-free, latex-free suitable for use in laboratories and when cleaning chemicals and disinfectants. They snap really easily.
