For a change, I decided to make a tool transformation video and experiment a little bit with knife making and turn the knife into a kiridashi alike knife. I got the putty knife for a 1$ at a flea market. The tool was rusty and overall in quite a bad shape. The blade is thin quite bendable and great for cutting leather and leather crafts.
OLD PUTTY KNIFE INTO KIRIDASHI | HAND TOOL TRANSFORMATION
In the beginning, I used water electrolysis made of an old notebook power adapter to remove most of the rust. I cut the rough shape of the kiridashi knife using a cutting wheel. Afterward used a round and flat file to make the exact shape of the knife. Further cleaning, sanding, and polishing were handled by sanding discs and sandpapers in various grits ranging from 120 to 600. I used a flat file to make the blade and a whetstone for its sharpening. Before the assembly, I oiled both the wooden and the metal parts to prevent the kiridashi knife from future rusting. This was one of the restoration/tool transformation projects I had the most fun with. The project is quite simple you don't need special equipment to do that (electrolysis can be replaced by hand sanding or a de-rusting solution) and as for the kiridashi knife bendable blade is perfectly applicable for cutting leather.
I like to create repair and bring old tools and appliances back to life and inspire others to create something with their own hands. Hopefully, I inspired you and could help with your projects. Creating is fun!

This looks more genuine than so many of these "restoration" videos on youtube. The guy didn't show how smooth he is with a lathe and turn a new handle and engrave or mirror polish the blade. Actually something one could use. good job
Thank you Ole. 👍
Right? those easy how to's using $10,000 dollars worth of equipment.
great creation😍
Just what I need to put new leather soles on my boots, thanks for the idea,my friend.God bless.
Thank you
we are going to have slim pickings over the next few weeks months as everything closes ,this shows what can be done with what we have , good job we all hoard !!
excellent restoration as always !
Mate! Thanks for stopping by. That's true. Everything closes. Let's reuse what we have.
Ficou legal!Parabéns!
Maria, thank you!! 👌
Parabéns pelo projeto amigo. Era disso que eu estava buscando e agora encontrei um excelente projeto.
Thanks for the comment. 👍 I'm glad my video could inspire. How did it turn out for you? Did you make your knife?
Un travail parfait merci

I'm so glad you kept the wooden handle. The history of the scraper is gone but the secrets of the handle live on. Nice work!
Thanks Paul!
Good leather working knife
Especially for skiving.....
Nice shank
You did an amazing job! Far beyond what I can do. Question though. Could you have used the unused metal for another knife ?
I am planning on it. Still have the other metal pieces for further creations.
Beautiful work
Much appreciated Diego. Thank you.
Interesting knife ive watched a few of your videos and like the content so ive subd keep the videos coming
Thank you, much appreciated.
Круто, но канцелярский нож с отламываемым лезвием не хуже с бумагой справится.
А так сделанное своими руками - всегда приятно держать в своих руках👍🏼
Awesome work man very creative!
Thanks mate! I really appreciate it.
Amador.
first of all, what is a kiridashi knife?
wonderful restoration to more useful kit..thank you
Tahnk you Jafrin
oke thank you.
Thank you too
Did the same thing except only reshaped the metal and handle I did not remove or take apart. Some of the putty knives are made of very good steel.
Min fits around my neck in a wood sheath stays in place with a magnet and is very handy such as yours will be. Nice looking tool !!
Awesome moonolyth! It is a handy tool :)

excelente la transformación, me gustó pero no probaste el filo del cuchillo
Gracias, Jesus. Voy a probarlo en el proximo video ;)
You took a long time to get from A to B, but you did a great job. Anaco, Anz.
Hi Buddy, it did take some time. But I am really happy about the result. Thanks!🙂
@@AllFlavorWorkshop You should be happy, you did a great job no doubt.....However I have to ask why you didn't stain the wooden handle to improve the looks? Just a question mind you, because you did such a fine job otherwise. Anaco, Anz.
@@buddyhutchins3782 Honestly, I was thinking about that but I decided to go with the original color of the handle. just gave it a bit of oil. Or possibly next time to go with a completely new one anl make the grip better.

I did something like that a couple of years ago. I got an old putty knife from a car boot sale for 50 pence, about 60 cents, and cleaned , reshaped and sharpened it
I did all the work with hand tools - abrasive paper, files, hacksaw, oil stones and a strop
It has made an excellent leather skiving knife
Look for an old putty knife or filling knife made from forged spring steel if possible, not stamped sheet
Love it Geoffrey, I am using it as a leather knife myself and it works like a charm. I am going to check it out. Thanks!
I love the video, and I thought the idea of making a knife out of an old putty knife was an ingenious idea. I did notice one thing in your video that I think is important to mention, the latex or nitrile gloves you are wearing while you are cutting the blade into shape. My concern is that if you catch a metal chip that lands on the glove and it melts it to your hand. Just a suggestion, but you might want to use gloves that can't melt when you work with metal cutting and grinding.
Thanks and keep up with the great content
I appreciate it and thanks for the suggestion. 👍
, xx cf,
N’y other glove would be dangerous to wear as the rotary tool could catch it and drag his whole hand in the tool/blade. Rubber glove will simply rip. You are imagining risk where there isn’t and suggesting a far more dangerous alternative.
😀 I like it very much, making clips useful and interesting
😀 I just started making DIY clips.
Thats great! 😊
Nice work .....do a video of your green vise....what brand is it? Looks very interesting
it is on the list. The vice is a 1956 York vise and I am looking forward to getting my hands on it.🙂
For a follow up video, could you heat treat and harden the edge?
That would be interesting, I could. Thanks!
Hey for a follow up make a space ship and wear ur gloves lol
Mi piacciono molto le tuearmi
Thank you for watching and for the support. :)
Nice job
Thanks Johnny! 👍
Awesome work!
Thank you Mushfiq. That is true. Tighter clamps are needed.
Bueno
Шедеврально.
I'm happy you liked it. :)
Hi bro 👋👋👋 very good transformation 👍👍👍
Thank you, man.
а что здесь необычного ?
What is the circuit used for rust removal? And is it sraight out of the mains?
Hi Steve, I used electrolysis to get rid of the rust. I used an AC/DC adapter. It is specifically designed to accept a certain AC input (usually the standard output from a 120 V AC outlet in your home) and convert it to a particular DC output. Direct current allows for the anions to deposit in the anode and for the cations in the cathode. Take caution with this!
Dear Sir, Splendide work! Would you be kind enough to give us some details about the electorlytic machine ?
Thank you Ikust I appreciate it. I might be making a video on the electrolysis itself. Anyway I'll provide the info. :)
AllFlavor Workshop that would be really great :))
Thanks for educated contained, may iknow it what you used for reduce the corotion maybe any chemical liquid you put in and mixed into the water?
Hi Ijul, hope you're well. To derust the tool I was using water electrolysis at the beginning. Afterwards a set of brushes and a wheel sander. The electrolysis wont work by itself , you need to put salt in - adding salt into the water will break the electrical neutrality of water molecules and will let them carry the electric charge. And by salt I mean Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or washing soda. Better to disolve the salt in water first. 👍
@@AllFlavorWorkshop how to apply the backing soda?
@@ijulmahardika8923 You need to disolve it in the water. Usually it is sold as powder. Stirr until all is disolved.Take a look at the following videos. I am showing how to disolve the soda in those. Le me know how it works for you.
1) ruclips.net/video/34E2TpT2Kpc/видео.html
2) ruclips.net/video/GCY2lkLoqG8/видео.html
3) ruclips.net/video/5irpqsZyrVU/видео.html
@@AllFlavorWorkshop thanks a lot, may iknow where are you come from?
You could have used the disk sander to remove the rust also,; especially for a plane surface there is no need for any chemical or electrical method.
Yea there's no need
any idea what kind of steel that is? does it hold an edge? I am looking for material for making a leather knife, maybe this might work?
Hi there. I'm really not sure about the kind of steel. But the blade itself is not long and me personally I am specifically using it for cutting leather. I did not temper the blade itself after cutting it from the putty knife but for leather cutting it works just fine. I am having sometimes difficulties cutting thicker leather (4mm +) but I do that rarely and if so I use another knife. for delicate leather cutting it works really well.👍
@@AllFlavorWorkshop thanks for the answer, I will try this
@@bushcraftonbike687 Thank you. Let me know how it works for you.
Let me ask you a question, bro!
Do you use an old computer battery charger to remove the corrotion from those metals?
👍👍👍👍
That is called alkaline water, yes you can use it. Just becarefull because it irritant and give much more rush to the metal thing
@@ultralinx200 thank you so much, brother!
I appreciate you for your ceative work

@@eternity9844 well, that's not me unfortunately.
А просто в хлористое железо не судьба было сунуть? Нужны были такие заморозки с вытравливанием?

Your finished product looked like an old Bob Ross palette knife.
Haha, so true. Though I've never used it for paining. :) Thanks
Sem a têmpera, ela não perde a afiaçao? 🤔
Jose Ailton de Jesus Lima talvez ele cuidou pra não aquecer muito no corte e não perdeu a têmpera original da ferramenta. Mas vc têm razão. Eu teria feito nova tempera!
Yes, my intent was to be careful with the cut and not affect the original tempering. I'll let you know in time how it holds.
no heat treating on the blade?
Hi J, I was thinking about that but on the other hand I dont think it is necessary. I was just using a grinder to cut the steel and for leather working purposes works just fine. Thanks for the tip.! 👍
COMPLIMENTI.

That vise you're using could stand a little restoring.
Hi Andre, actually I did restore the vise as well. One of my videos. Thanks 👍
So bao entendi o processo dela agua e eka e ferri ou aço
Thanks Jose, that's water electrolysis.
Wasn't it easier to get rid of the rust with acid?
Hi Андрей. I honestly don't know.. Not that I havent tired but I has its cons. Takes longer in comaprison with electrolysis and the result is usually not that good as using electrolysis. But it works as well and definitely it is one of the options how to do it..
Should have used the vice instead of the table clamp. The piece moved when he was cutting it. Then he put his fingers down there to hold it, lol. Good way to lose 1. Beautiful blade though!
Thanks and true. That clamp wasn't the best choice. ;)
👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯
Thank you, Marcos.
Harden edge?
Hi Graham, I was thinking about it but I decided that for leather crafting might not be necessary. What's your experience? Thanks for the comment.
AllFlavor Workshop no experience in knife making, my knowledge only come from the you tube videos which you have probably seen yourself, I did think that if you were into metalwork a hardened edge could mark metal for you as well.
Es artilugio esta diseñado para un "zurdo" no, ...??

Hi Bikedogtor, no, it wasnt hard steel. My next step would be to hardened it. 👍

Gloves with rotating tools? You'd better make a disclaimer for imitators.
Agreed. Though it really depends on gloves. Definitely not heavy gloves which could get tangled in the wheel. But the ones I am using are nitrile examination gloves. Powder-free, latex-free suitable for use in laboratories and when cleaning chemicals and disinfectants. They snap really easily.
