He’s the most thoughtful, deep songwriter. I love this man. I connected with his music when I was 12 and I’m 40 today and his songs and lyrics just grow in meaning for me. Such gratitude to my oldest sister’s boyfriend for sharing Metallica with me. Wherever he is today… you gave me a gift that never stopped giving ❤
You can see how protective and vulnerable James is about opening up his personal feelings about his lyrics, like he’s being very careful about talking this.

I honestly think he was on opioids here. His pupils are all pinpoint, (if he was drunk they'd be dilated) he's slurring his speech, and answering very slow. Not his usual self here. I know everybody's gonna come at me with the "James never used drugs!" thing, but I'm tellin' ya, something's up here. Obviously he's had his Coors Light's, but there's more to it than that. I've used a ton of opioids, and I've been around it. He's either high as a kite or jet-lagged/sleep deprived. That could cause pinpoint pupils too. I think this could be an interesting discussion. I'd say it's more about him being shy as fuck, his songs are his inner, his guts. He didn't grow up to be a talkfull individual, kept all inside bottled up. You can clearly see how little he wants to say about nothing else matters, him saying "this song is about a person I love" wasn't an easy task, take it from someone who has troubles expressing his emotions and holding back on stuff when asked about them, dude just doesn't like telling how he feels like and why. Jason said james would gate keep the lyrics for weeks, until they were finally ready to be recorded and only then, the rest of the band would see the lyrics for the first time. Even with these guys, he was hesitant on sharing his emotion process and didn't want them to see everything he feels and thinks about, that's why to him, only the final lyrics should be shared with them. That stuff was his, and it came from the insides, Writting lyrics was probably at the time, his best attempts at expressing what was bottled inside, and talking it out just wasn't one of his skills yet.
