James with great answers. Probably one of the most revealing interviews. It shows the intention of growing up lyrically & musically. He opens up about the issues & topics of the songs: manipulation, freedom of expression, freedom of choice, the will of doing the right thing, of being true to what you like at a moment they were accused of "sellouts". The thing is Metallica is never afraid of trying new ways of reaching out to people musically.

Its kinda funny the first 2-3 albums he looked awkward and still "teenager-y". weird shaped face and pimple scars. then suddenly around his mid-late twenties, by MOP or AJFA, he looked a lot better. Just grew into himself I guess.
imo it's that period of time that also secure their metal 'street cred' further into the pantheon of timeless modern music.. its been a very interesting career this band's history, truly one of a kind. basically they don't have to do anything new after the Black Album and everything was still ok~
I love hearing all that late 80s pop/glam metal and then cutting to James during the _Justice_ era. All those bands pretty much disappeared soon after. It's a shame because I miss that style of music but I have to admit that it was so limited and narrow. Not even talking about grunge, there were other bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More and Suicidal Tendencies that needed to not be "Outshined" along with the likes of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.

89 James is my favorite, right behing 86 MoPuppets. He got a little big headed, self admitted after the Black album for a decade or so, but thankfully he came back around and is an incredible soul now and def helped me thru a lot, from when I first heard Master of Puppets at 12 when it released in 86. IMO
There's a part of James Hetfield somewhat smirking on the way the Japanese interviewer were asking questions. Or James is trying to observe and study the uttered odd languages in hopes he'll figure out the meaning or translation. Japanese metal is cool too. Hope at some point Metallica members studied them.
If it weren't for the damn record companies pushing them to tone down their heaviness and forcing them to make sappy ballads and wear more girly clothes, Glam metal wouldn't be shit on as much as it is nowadays. And after 'St. Anger' it hit home strong. This band, that now comes out with an album every 8-10 years, wasted time and legacy on dumb production issues/choices.
Also, I've heard 'amazing' 'poly and counter rhythmic' albums with good production back in 1987/1988 and before then. Better than the tin can production of AJFA, for sure. The album missed bass, no question.
