I really liked this series. They managed to make a good story in the span of 6 episodes, and with likable child protagonists. Although the animation style annoyed me with the human characters... the story was pretty solid and the monster fights were great. To me, this show seem like a love letter to the original 1960-70s Gamera movies.
Seshita was wise to allocate most of the production time and budget to the show's main event: the kaiju action. My favorite visual from this episode is the smaller Gyaos quivering and rolling it's eyeball upward while being electrocuted. Does anyone else think that Joe's Japanese voice actor sounds a bit too old for the character he's portraying?
It’s sounding promising so far! I’m gonna have to wait a few days to watch it but I’m super excited. One thing I’d like to ask your opinion on though Omni is the characterization of the kaiju themselves. Did they do them justice?

_Emaciated,_ Omni...The word to you're looking for to describe Gyaos, is "Emaciated." It's indicative of Gyaos' ravenous appetite; as if their body either cannot metabolize the food it eats, or burns through calories too quickly that it's body is in a constant-state of being near-malnourished. Therefore, it's constantly hungry, on the hunt for more. I've so far watched two episodes thus far...and I've got mixed-feelings as of yet. I think there's something - not just in this series - but from Japanese Kaiju-Related media of the last few years, that has somewhat got me worried. See, my original Monstrous Moment talked about how after World War II, Japan had a strict Anti-Military Policy enacted, to ensure that Japan would not fall back into Imperialism, and potentially join any fascistic regime in the future. The Kaiju Genre was meant to sort of get-around these laws; they were only allowed to show Japan using Military Might against the Kaiju, _if the Military was portrayed as ineffective as possible._ That's the real reason why Godzilla is depicted as being impervious to conventional military weaponry - and why in some Godzilla films, it looks like the military is shooting _around the monsters,_ bordering on incompetence. But to me, there seems to be a growing trend from Kaiju Media coming out of the country, that expresses that the citizens of Japan are expressing a growing resentment of these policies. There are two scenes in this episode alone where a Commander in the JSDF is told the situation by his subordinate, only to then be told that the Government is debating whether or not to approve sending them into combat; and by the time the decisions are made, the Kaiju Battle is already _over._ Now granted, I can understand a country being fed-up with the pointless bureaucracy that seems to only be in place to actively prevent and discourage the government from doing something...But it doesn't actually make for entertaining scenes or dialogue, when two characters talk about how they're going to do "Nothing." (unless they're Winnie the Pooh.) In the old days, we didn't see or hear from the government trifling about whether or not to send in the JSDF - the JSDF was deployed almost from the moment the monsters were sighted coming toward the country. Now a days, the movies and shows are going out of their way to show that the Government _can't do that._ But also, there's another aspect that I find unfavorable. Because Japan doesn't have a strong, standing military presence of it's own, they depend on NATO Allies to defend them, should the country be attacked - I.E. Us - as in the US. This show is going out of it's way to point-out that a section of the USAF basically has jurisdiction over Tokyo, and doesn't have it's hands-tied when it comes to doing something. I can't help but feel like the show is hinting at a growing resentment that Japan may be harboring toward the US with this display. They're resentful that they are helpless until the Americans show up to save the day, while their own government basically has their hands-tied. Hell, I literally skipped-over the introduction to Brody where he steals their money, the moment after he started mentioning the US's military relationship with Japan. I just wasn't in the mood to see the few American characters in this show being depicted as jerks, taking advantage of the Japanese. Granted, I know Brody is going to have a character-arc, but really can't not see this entire thing for the commentary that it is... My objections to this are obvious... If Kaiju-Movies and TV shows are going to start expressing a growing sentiment of displeasure towards Japan's anti-militarization laws, then it could be a sign that those laws _might_ get removed. That would mean that the entire Kaiju Genre will change. The military might be shown being effective against the Kaiju from now on. In fact, before long, the country might not even need the Kaiju genre anymore after that. The second being, the US has been allies with Japan basically since the War ended. But if Japan has a growing resentment of its relationship with the US, then they could be willing to or even wanting to break off ties with us. Needless to say, Japan becoming our enemy is a rather distasteful notion. And if this is coupled with a dislike of the Anti-Military Policies the country has had for 80 years at this point, then it can only be assumed, it is coming with a desire to rebuild Japan's Military Might... What I'm trying to say is; this Genre has always been a small window into the public consciousness of what Japan is currently dealing with or going through during the times - like how Shin Godzilla was their frustrations with the government over the Fukushima Incident. So if _this_ is what Japan is currently thinking...then we should all be very cautious about what the Future might bring. Especially if theories about Godzilla: Minus One are proven to be correct.
I thought the running gag with the bored JSDF commander and his subordinate was pretty funny, myself. As for the idea of Japan wanting to cut ties with America, there's a HUGE reason why that's not going to happen: China. Unless they've lost their collective sanity, the Japanese do NOT want to be left on their own with China's increasingly dangerous regime and the very real possibility that it will become an aggressor in the future. I have to ask: having watched the second episode, do you seriously believe that this show is anti-American? Yes, Brody and his punk lackeys are scumbags in the beginning. Yes, some Americans can be real ***holes. That's a fact of life. But did you not also notice Brody's father and the other American troops? How they thoughtlessly put themselves in harm's way to protect Japanese civilians, many of them sacrificing their lives in the process? How the general tells them not to abandon the Japanese people no matter what? Do you really think Japanese audiences will regard that display with resentment? Perhaps a few will but I bet that most won't. Far right nationalism does indeed exist in Japan but so far (I've watched up to episode three) Gamera Rebirth isn't catering to it. Those scenes with the JSDF are clowning on Japanese governmental bureaucracy, nothing more. I think the kaiju genre is going to be fine. I doubt those concerns regarding Godzilla Minus One will pan out, but I'll talk about that another time.

Honestly, I’ve only seen the first episode as of writing this so I might be wrong, doesn’t seem too great so far. Let’s start out with pros. As you said, the runtime was fine. 1st half getting to know our leads and 2nd half completely reliant on monsters. Not a bad thing. And the monsters? OH HECK YEAH! The Gyaos are terrifying like the Heisei ones! Mindless, terrifying hunters with no objective but KILL. Gamera was great! Still retaining his character of defending the children! (not that I didn’t think he wouldn’t.) but that’s about where the pros end unfortunately. The animation was still jank. But I didn’t mind to much, but… dear lord those humans were strange. And now for the characters… oh boy. I’m going to start with Brody & his gang. The stereotypical jerk Americans. Wasn’t too pleased at that but am willing to give it a pass for now. And the main three. We’re supposed to be rooting for them? They tried to set a bully ON FIRE over some damn money. Go ahead and try to defend this. I don’t think you can without sounding like a psychopath. Not to mention all the profanity. I’m not as mad about this, it’s just they used the F-bomb an unholy amount of times. It just felt extremely unnecessary. And the running gag about pee. I guess I’ll forgive it cause, these are kids. But this and the cussing just felt extremely overused and unnecessary. Overall. Episode 1: Over Tokyo | 4/10. Great start monster-wise, but doesn’t set a good tone human character-wise. I won’t let this affect my judgement of the whole show though. I’ll hold out.
How does the profanity RUIN it? If you were caught in a bad situation as the characters you WOULD be cussing a lot. The fact that there cussing makes the characters and their reactions more REALISTIC. Which is why I loved that they added profanity. Also, Boco and his friends WEREN'T going to set Brody and his gang on fire. And if you watched the series, it took them a LONG TIME to get that much yen and they needed the money to buy a transmitter so they can be able to stay in contact with each other. I'd be EQUALLY as pissed if my hard ass fucking work was destroyed by some spoiled people taking my rewards from me. Call me a psychopath all you want, I really don't give a shit, you destroy something after I went through a lot of hardwork to try and get it, I will seek revenge (it's only natural). Brody is ONLY an American jerk because his father works in the US military, so Brody is entitled that Americans are the best (which is disproven as the episode goes on, basically NO ONE is better as the humans STILL struggle to defend themselves against the Kaiju). Plus, Brody IS SPOILED as we see and only wants to make his dad proud (despite doing it the wrong way). And I DON'T know why you mentioned the pee, that's so fucking minor that I had already forgotten that it was even in the series. The animation I agree with 100% it is INDEED janky and the humans at certain angles and at a certain distance look weird. Reply made: 10:55 PM Thursday, September 7 2023

I don't think they wanted to set the american kid on fire , in fact unless you are going to set bugs on fire tryin to do the same to a human with a spray can is difficult , i think they just wanted to have a way to scare them o at least defend themselves , the rest of your criticism i can of see why would it bother you but i don't really see them as examples of bad writing giving that they are not really contradictory of character traits or story.

@@Kaiju-bm4ts now i watched it all the Kaiju look brilliant. It is the human animation done terrible, the Voice actors did a great job considering no facial expressions on these characters. I know that will put alot of people off but they should give it a chance.

@@kaijuar2003 1. It didn’t ruin the episode, it just caught me off guard how much there was.
2. Yeah. I’d be mad too, I just think that was a bit too far.
3. That’s a good point.
4. I guess, it just isn’t my type of humor. And I wasn’t terribly mad about it.
Anyway, thanks for leaving your thoughts on my opinion. I always love to hear feedback from others.
@@spinosaurusstriker I have been watching more of the series and I actually am starting to like it a lot more.
I hate the animation style, tbh.
Blame kadokawa for giving scraps to the animation
SPOILERS
I still don't understand what exactly the deal with the moon people was (if they was even human and where they alive for thousands of years?) and what exactly their beef was with humanity and why they wanted to wipe out half the population.
and i still don't even know what exactly Gamera and the Kaiju are supposed to be and where they came from other than they apparently where around during an ancient civilization thousands of years ago
if i missed something someone pls explain
We get a gender clarification by the end of episode 3 (or maybe it was 2 🤔)
@@freiflug83 Everything you said has literally no relation to anything i said, congrats for letting the world know you cannot read.
did you watch ep 5/6? the characters explain it there
@@blueblaze27 i did but i still dont get exactly why are we population controlling or what the kaiju are exactly
@@JC-cm6hz i'm pretty sure the kaiju were created by the foundation to wipe out humans or something, probably to take over the world or some weird cult thing, idk
(7:07) Really? I had no idea that it takes place in 1989, I thought it was supposed to take place in modern day (2023). I wonder why they set it in that time period? 🕰🤨🤔🗓
(0:51) Honestly I was more so surprised with the amount of swearing thats in the show (especially coming from the main kids). While watching it for the first time I was like, "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth" lol. 🤬😳😆👦
The outdated technology should of been a obvious indicator it was not in the 21st century, plus the synopsis for the show state the show was in 1989. The show was placed in that year to respect the heisei and showa eras of gamera since the showa political era in Japan ended in 1989 and lead into the heisei political era
@@Kaiju-bm4ts I didn't really notice the technology difference until I watched the show a second time lol. I mean I guess I should have figured that out with them trying to get the radio at the beginning of the show, but oh well. 📻🤔🤷💸
