My late husband was a roofer and capped and flaunched many a chimney, he particularly loved working on old properties and he had the same work ethic as you. I very much enjoy your videos and you made a beautiful job of the chimney.
Hiya mate So many people have said that, so today, following your advice when I put the mushroom on..i made a few holes using a long 10mm sds bit to aid in the breathability!
Like the idea of the helix and resin , at the end you Said you were going to put the original ties back in place ,, are they wrought iron as they will rust and blow apart .
great video and soundtrack Izzy, always a pleasure for an old general builder to see a true professional at work, keep em coming mate and ill be there to support the channel.
Thank you very much mate, really glad to hear your still enjoying the videos! They take SO much time to edit and put together for you all! Hope your doing really well!
That was a lovely project Izzy. The care and attention taken in the deconstruction and the reconstruction was right up your street. A nice change. Well done
👍👍👍🇺🇸 wow totally awesome izzy you totally nailed it. Old school construction with modern technology and it came out beautiful. You were truly a master. Wish the best for you there mate.✅
Use NHL at least folks. Not perfect but better than OPC. Staples can be held tightly by pouring molten lead around them. Leave chimneys vented. They will wet out with condensation and cause the original lime mortar to soften. Also creates a smell in room where warm air can't rise out of chimney stack. Can end up smelling acrid from the damp soot.
Hiya mate! Hope your well...s many people have said that it needs aie, so today when I put the mushroom on I made a few holes using a long 10mm sds bit! All the best for Christmas mate
Nice job. As a retired contractor if possible go back to your old work in 10, 20 or 30 years and observe how it has held up, It can be satisfying or lesson learned.
Cracking job there mate! Also looked very difficult with the amount of overhang! But you managed! I was concerned about the patches where youve fixed the stones together, but thinking...they'll never be seen unless from a bird! Have a great week, much respect for what you do, from a retired stone mason 😊
@IzzytheBricky yeah I'm good mate, love watching your videos, now retired after 40 years laying and it brings back so many memories,so thanks for that and the quality work you're doing
awesome job, the feeling of taking something down which is 200+ years old and youre having to knock away at it with a hammer is unbelievable, im a self employed builder with my dad whos being doing it since he was 15 (hes 70 now) and hes adamant the quality of sand/cement just is not the same as its either been diluted down or stretched further (one bag of old cement is now 3 bags of new) whats your opinion on this, same with the strength of mortar cleaner, he says it would burn your skin back in the day, now its just a twinge, due to many reasons, would be nice to know what you think and if you think there will be people knocking away at your/other work in 200 years to come, Great video love the detail you have
Thank you so much Chris, really appreciate your comment! I can't really comment on the strength of the cement, as I'm only 10 years in. I can say that adic is like lemon water though haha..probably for safety reasons though nowadays Hope all is well and your keeping warm!
That's not how you cap a chimney off. It needed a lead tray on top instead of a tiny piece of dpc. It will need to be done again in a few years' time, especially if you used nhl 3.5 to flaunch. You need to use a strong grano/gritsand and cement mix unless you have to use lime use nhl 5 instead. Also the flue liner on top looks ridiculous. Could have got a reclaimed chimney pot or not bothered. Do it once do it right.
That’s not a flue liner anyways, it’s a pot and was the original that’s why he left it on. The flue liner goes from the back of the old combi boilers up the inside of the chimney and made out of stainless steel
It's a terracotta flue liner mate. They aren't use so much anymore. It's mainly concrete and like you said the flexible stainless nowadays. But that, in the video is 100 percent a terracotta flue liner. They aren't supposed to be exposed.
@@Charlton2010that’s definitely a flue liner, look at the top, the in-dent around the rim suggests the next pot sits inside that one. It would cost a bit of money to get a reclaim pot but it would of made it look a lot better
Hiya mate hope your doing really well! 3n1 sharpsand and cement for the top and thanks to your comment, today when I put the mushroom on I made a few holes using a long 10mm sds bit to let it get air. Appreciate it buddy (p.s. I only do what the client wants, I'm not in control of the actual chimney pot..makes for a boring video having to explain all of that haha) hope ur good and appreciate the comment
Great comment Gary, yes unfortunately I was just told by the client to do exactly what I did. I have put air holes in today after seeing the advice. A nice pot would be fantastic. But as I said, I just do as I'm told by the client. Hope you approve it, all the best dude
the pot should be open ended the flue should not be closed off a lead cap should then be made for the pot .A lead bowl for capping pots was the first thing i made at building college where i was learning plumbing in the leadwork class in 1965
Its a problem capping off the chimney as you did, will lead to mould buildup in a few years time, best to leave the chimney open or it'll need redoing in a few years.
theres an x factor to your math mate , if you take half of then theres less suction , cant be to code if theres a real fire in the chimney , but cary on , havent watched it all yet
I had a chimney capped and 6 months later was getting damp coming through the bedroom wall. Called out another builder and he uncapped the chimney then added a mushroom. He explained that this allowed the chimney to breathe. Never had an issue after.
My late husband was a roofer and capped and flaunched many a chimney, he particularly loved working on old properties and he had the same work ethic as you. I very much enjoy your videos and you made a beautiful job of the chimney.
Thank you so much Victoria, greatly appreciate your kind comment. Hope your doing very well, all the best ☺️ Isaac
Those brick fixing should be lead, just put strips of lead in and torch it till molten thats how they did it back in the day. Also, the pots new btw.
Thanks Ricky appreciate it! Hope your well and staying busy!
The "pot" isn't a chimney pot...it is a basic flue liner, that has been used as a makeshift pot. You can see the rebate at the bottom of it.
The chimney needs venting to stop internal condensation.
Exactly
Lime morter

Thank you as always Nigel, greatly appreciate it! How are you buddy?
@IzzytheBricky I'm doing fine my friend. That roof looked bloody cold that day.
Well done gents… better than new👏🏻👏🏻

Always important to have directions to the pub on the plan! Great job Izzy, well done, now some holy water. Stay well.
That's it mate! Priorities!
beautiful job guys restoration work is a new level a period chimney pot would have looked awesome to finish great job👍👍
Thanks so much buddy, oh ye I agree, but the client just wanting it reduced, that's all unfortunately
Nice work
Nice job. We recently repotted a stack on Plymouth hoe G2 and added eml into the flaunch

Worth the extra effort in that nice area 👌
Thanks mate I couldn't agree more
Nicely done 👌
Thanks you sir! Appreciate it
Lovely job Izzy, only advise should have notched a small hole in supporting slate for ventilation

Great job mate
Cheers buddy! Hope all is well
Excellent job
Tha k you Barry! Hope all is well and your keeping warm
Good job 😊
Doesn't the resin cock it up if it needs fixing in the future? Not a criticism just wondering as they'd used the old ties so it could be taken apart.
Great question, honestly, I don't know, those old ties look like the originals...wonder how long the resin will last? Hope your doing great
Izzy lad your gettin a m head what I call it going balled brother 😂 bricklaying man 😂 good work mate ❤ love ye vide😂os
Tell me about it! It's winter now..so that's hats come out haha
What's the mortar mix made up of...
NHL 3.5, Sharp sand and plastering sand?
Loverly job.
Thanknyou sir! All the best
been from Sheffield and a bricklayer curious where in Sheffield this actually is
Thought we'd be finished by 11 😂😂 looks great and I would have put the date by the names.
Cheers mate appreciate it!
Say hi to Def Leppard at the old spoon factory down the street. Thanks!
Cheers buddy! All the best!
Didn't know you were a fellow sheffielder izzy! Can I ask where you get your sand for your NHL mix? Top work next to the stunning St Johns church
Hiya mate, MKM in Sheffield sell it! I'm actually Derbyshire, but our work is in Sheffield. If you drive last..let me know if it's still up? Haha

I like to wet my brick and stone before laying cement especially with the drier mixes...too much residual dust.
Очень хорошая работа!👍
Парень в желтой куртке, одень шапку, береги здоровье.!
Those TV aerial mounting straps are a pain if too tightly fastened, i think in that case it totally ruins the chimneys character 😢. 👍
Couldn't agree more with you mate! Hope your well!
First job......clear the snow from the scaffold deck...
Couldn't a re-flaunch have been sufficient?
Not if we were taking I down by 1m buddy
What is the benefit of the lime mortar? Why not use compo like in the brick laying videos besides just being traditional?
Allows the chimney to breath. Also keeps the stones from getting damaged. As Cement is too strong
Silly question but what happens to all the water that fills up inside the pot.
Great question, we've put a mushroom top on the pot to stop rain filling it up buddy
I reckon turkey should be your next holiday for a hairline mate🤣
I couldn't agree more with ya mate hahaha ey hope u and the family are well mate

What is going to stop the chimney pot filling with water
Good question, there's a small mushrooms topper going on, to shelter from thr rain! Hope your doing well mate
lovely job you made of it. that fire will have a very poor draw on it I bet 😂😂
Haha cheers buddy appreciate it!
Why did it have to be reduced in height
Do you think l straps on inside and l coming over top would work ?
Just a suggestion maybe not
Definitely would work mate
That's a modern day flue liner not a chimney pot
It would have looked better with a nice crown pot on instead of just leaving a flue liner sticking out. Pop a vented mushroom in it.
Yes, to be honest there is no way that was the original pot!
Mate you couldn't be more right, but unfortunately I do as the client asks.☺️ hope your well buddy and having a good week so far
Your definitely right Mark. I bet an original pot from then would be upwards of 200 now
Keep the stones!
You've heard of chimneys, now get ready for chim-elbows
Hahaha love it bud!
the staples would have been fixed with molten lead poured in then caulked to tighten up giving an instant fixing with no setting time
Just like they do to attach stones to cathedrals
Blue sky in Sheffield? Who'd a thought it
Haha
the pot should be open ended the flue should not be closed off a lead cap should then be made for the pot .A lead bowl for capping pots was the first thing i made at building college where i was learning plumbing in the leadwork class in 1965
Brilliant David, cheers for that. Hope your well and enjoying your week so far
Nice bit of trowel work does your cake icing look as good 😂
Haha well if I ever get sick of bricklaying, I know what to do now haha
U can powerwash them stones clean izzy never put back dirty weathered stones wash then they will be clean again they come out tan
tidy job.

+250 years later some builder will say "" Who the feck was Izzy Kyle"...
Hahaha
Drop the dramatic music m8. It’s but a chimney.
Why did they want it lowered
To reduce the weight on a steel we installed
🏗️🏗️🏗️🏗️🏗️🏗️🏗️
Won't the pot fill up with water ?
Great question, not with a mushrooms topper on, which was put on today
ok , good
Will you be ventilating flue top and bottom to reduce the risk of condensation and damp?
I had a chimney capped and 6 months later was getting damp coming through the bedroom wall. Called out another builder and he uncapped the chimney then added a mushroom. He explained that this allowed the chimney to breathe. Never had an issue after.

I've added holes today to.let it breath, appreciate your comment dude!
Not sure about the joke chimney pot...
Me either, but it what was there☺️
Hope your staying warm buddy
So good to finally see you not working on a new build 😂
Are you going to leave it like that 😂
Hahaha, hope your good Peter and staying warm!
its traditional to put a silver coin in flaunching back in the day. i take it coin stopped in ur pocket?🤣🤣
Literally done that today on a job. Old bricky I used to work with always done it 👍
The old brickie on RUclips would be proud of you
That's awesome mate!
Haha never actually heard of that mate! I'll put a quid in next time haha
