Okay, I will shut up after this comment😂… I commented on a couple of your previous videos. I saw a number of potential fixes, but I mostly commented on the lack of instruction on generating power backside (heel edge). I was about to recommend watching Kale Brock and Cris Mills, so I’m super glad you tapped into them on your own . They are both great. Kale really describes the generation of backside speed well with the “digging with a shovel” technique. Yes, the surfing technique will make you look way better which may not matter at all, but it will certainly improve your overall surfskate ability too and that should not be underestimated. it also will be more transferrable to other board sports. Glad to see you spreading the word of Kale and Cris. I also love OMBE, most of his tutorials are for surfing, but he uses surfskate training a lot, very helpful.
Dude, I watched this video and a few of your others, then went and bought a board. I accidentally ran into surf skate videos after looking for videos on longboard wheels which actually turned out to be a surfskate wheel. The best accident ever! I was able to pump all around a parking lot first time on my carver cx thanks to this video breakdown.

Hi Melissa, quick question, when you say throw that weight, do you mean before scoop, or after scoop? Struggling a bit with it at the moment. Not sure if the scooping or extension after scooping actually gives the forward mementum. Thanks a lot!
I’ve been using my surfskate loads to improve my forward facing drive and compression for surfing. 1 thing to work on outside of skate/surf is ankle strength and mobility so you can keep the back foot square and roll it over rather than turning foot forward. Lots of 1 footed kettle bell squats and pass across body as well as waking on an indoboard roller or pvc pipe. Think even Chris mills has a vid on pvc pipe balancing etc. Loving the surfskate for just getting used to facing forward and driving low and compressing etc

In carving snowboarding, you hear the terms "plus" and "minus" position, relating to position of shoulders to board when looking down from above. So when you are doing a toe-side turn, you are in minus position (shoulders in line with board) and when doing a heel-side turn, you are in plus position (shoulders perpendicular to board), the twist thus induced, combined with the correctly timed knee bend, helping to set up the edge for carving.
Thanks! I watched the Brock and Mills introductory videos couple months ago repeatedly and never quite got it. Your last video--even if due to oversimplification--quickly made SS fun finally. And thanks for the posture clarifications here, and taking the time to study and break it down for us. I'm excited to try it outside. I'm definitely sticking with this (and might even try the Brock and Mills programs now have a promising foundation)
This video has been super helpful! One nit-pick though; heels-down toes-up would be the equivalent (in surfing) of a back-side bottom turn. Some people may find it more natural to do the opposite: toes-down heels-up. This makes sense then why, in your bowl riding videos, you have trouble with your front-side turns in the bowl. You're almost exclusively practicing the back-side turns on flat ground. Seems like the recommendation should be to practice both as equally as possible.
youtube gold! pumping is solid. the only thing missing i think is, and coming from a surfer POV is for the big maneuvers is looking at the point you want to turn. also looking over the shoulder for cutback turns.

Great video! You’re a natural teacher. I’ve been surf skating for about a year and a half and find myself still learning better, more efficient ways to gain momentum and proper technique. For example, I just tried applying the techniques you showed in this video to my own and found carving on turns to be much easier, and I have more confidence going into them when I position my arms the way you show here. I think a large part of it is pulling your center of gravity closer to your body to spin faster, like a figure skater. Wide arms = slow spin. Narrow arms = fast spin. It allows you to carve in a smaller space for faster turn arounds. Arm placement is so important! However, I do like to put my arm back just to change things up (and because it feels good... like cutting through the wind when coasting). Always be learning!
I gotten so good with the back foot pumping that I'm able to pump without the front trucks on the ground, basically a manual while pumping. That was with normal technical skateboards, so i can't wait to get into these type of trucks and boards and the rail 2 rail action, because it's really not the same. I was pumping with stiff grommets doing a type of tap tap motion with the front wheels in a 45 degree angle between each front truck tap, if that makes sense. Once I saw your "cup method", I realized that I have been doing that years but not with these multi-dimensional trucks. Saving up for the Yow Meraki's to rock a lightweight 27 inch long "mini" sector 9 for quick start pumping for pump tracks and easy air time and small launches, and maybe some 360 micro grabs and I'll be happy. But the main reason I'm riding is so I can delivery food much faster in those high rise apartments where you have to walk 80 yards just to get to a persons door. I hate those apartments, but at least I can use people's codes to take advantage of their gyms and pools

Very helpful vid. Riding with my feet at an angle has really helped me getting low on the board for long straight lines at speed particularly being quite tall. I have also found that Surfskating has really improved my balance/control for surfing and drop Knee bodyboarding. Loving it .
These techniques improved my pump specially the stance but as go fast it’s hard for me to control the movements I also don’t know how to stop lol. Great tutorial keep making of this!

Love the 2.0 video but I have to say it - if you had gone against your beginner advice and learned first on a Hamboard, you never would have had to correct your stance; your sore bottom after falling would have self-corrected ;) Because they are so loose/tippy, to stand on them you learn to plant correctly slant footed on the middle of the board. I accept the other critiques of them (slow, heavy, etc) but when it comes to form they were a godsend for me when learning.
This is fantastic. I used compression and extensions methods technique from you but most of thai tutorial will tell you that its mainly upper body movement which like you said it works but it’s not efficient.
Good vid steve. Nice excercise is the take a bucket in the hands, take inaginairy water and throw it away on the other side, maybe a little over the shoulder. That way you also learn how to shift weight from front to back
Dude I got to thank you a lot! I tried just the first tip about forward posture and something in my hip/knee clicked correctly! I've been having some issues with pain in these areas but just as I shifted my stance forward it felt like I've been even walking wrong! Thanks m8!
One thing I think folks should be mindful of is the butt wiggle style. There are small subtle types of pumping in all types of waves, and on all styles of surfboards, but the surf skate lends itself to mimicking the small wave thruster butt wiggle style of pumping very easily, and that's not the most aesthetically pleasing. Smoothing the mechanics of the whole body, and remembering, less is more, can go a long way. It is just about impossible I think to breakdown how the body moves while surfing, it is just something that needs to be done, and done for a very long time on a variety of craft to truly interpret well on a surf skate. If though you are stuck being a visual learner, I'd say watch guys like Alex Knost as opposed to ASP pros

Thanks for the vid. We all respond to different things at different stages in our progression, so for me, the part I connect to the most right now is the one about hip motion. Once you get the feeling in your hips, arms don't matter that much, I find. Coming from a martial arts background, I'd say focusing on one's center of gravity (below the navel) helps me get more free when it comes to form, which in turns improves flowiness and overall feeling. As far as I'm concerned, watching Pau "Loski" of "Loski Sessions" has been both a treat for the eyes and highly instructive.
Yeah, Loski Sessions is incredible. So much fun to watch. I wouldn't say "arms don't matter that much" in any context. I have been really feeling into how much arms affect balance. Critical to keep them out ahead of you instead of flailing around behind you.
@@SurfskateLove True dat. Arms do matter, what I mean is that I don't really obsess with them anymore, they mostly just follow or accompany, rather than lead.
@@koaballero2794 I found that I had to really exaggerate what I was doing with my arms because I tended to have them very stiff and lifeless. Started noticing it more and more as I watched film of myself.

Thanks for the vid. We all respond to different things at different stages in our progression, so for me, the part I connect to the most right now is the one about hip motion. Once you get the feeling in your hips, arms don't matter that much, I find. Coming from a martial arts background, I'd say focusing on one's center of gravity (below the navel) helps me get more free when it comes to form, which in turns improves flowiness and overall feeling. As far as I'm concerned, watching Pau "Loski" of "Loski Sessions" has been both a treat for the eyes and highly instructive.
Yeah, Loski Sessions is incredible. So much fun to watch. I wouldn't say "arms don't matter that much" in any context. I have been really feeling into how much arms affect balance. Critical to keep them out ahead of you instead of flailing around behind you.
@@SurfskateLove True dat. Arms do matter, what I mean is that I don't really obsess with them anymore, they mostly just follow or accompany, rather than lead.

@@koaballero2794 I found that I had to really exaggerate what I was doing with my arms because I tended to have them very stiff and lifeless. Started noticing it more and more as I watched film of myself.

OK here's my experience. So tried out your suggestion and the feeling is really awesome. Is fun and a good way to train surfing. But feel if you want faster speed and acceleration from start off then the "old" style works.
