Man you killed it in Venice Beach! Truly inspiring. I'm 26 years old, hesitant to buy a surfskate for fear of not being able to get the hang of it; but your attitude, discipline and modesty are giving me hope. Thank you so much for sharing
Hey Oscar, it depends on your stance width. My Surfskate Selector app will tell you exactly which models will be best for you: www.surfskate.love/surfskate-selector
Awesome video, you are so lucky to have so many big skateparks arround. In my city I can find 1 mini bowl which is crowded always. Did you find the Soulboardiy to big for the bowl? Or if you would put a CX or C7 truck on it, it would be fine? Thinking of buying a soulboardiy
Very encouraging Steve, I'm 57 and just started longboard two months ago, now because of you I purchased a YOW and I'm doing my first practices since last week, very far from reaching your current level but aiming to that in the future!!!!
I’m 59 with only a surfing background but even after 1 week surf skating I’m thinking about bowls. I’ll need body pads. Water is so much more forgiving but far harder to learn on.
Glad to see people in my age group. Started in Jan 2021 at 60. Focused on Carving & Pumping then went on to slides to slow & stop as not feasible on tipsy surf skates as I have waterborne rails on all setups. Next is transition in bowls when there is a chance as there is only bowls in 1 skatepark where I am & competing with roller bladers & skate scooters.
Old head here to! 53 years young. Started skating again in January and discovered surf skate in March. In August right now I’m starting to learn snaps/slides. Old heads unite!
OG here as well- I’m 51 and started a year ago because my 14year old son wanted to skate at park. I figured I may as well join him. Glad I did. I will be getting pads and helmet now. Broke a big toe and herniated back disc but I will be back. Thanks for the encouragement to skate
Who gave this remarkable progress DISLIKE? I just bought Carver skate board yesterday to learn, and this video is such an inspiration. I am 66 and a half year old woman and will enjoy my Carver. Wonderful young man. Your daughter must be very proud of you!! Much Aloha
Man, im 29 y.o. Back in 2020 i was injured (break my leg) with my 34" yow with s5 system. so now in 2021 im still struggling with bowls and scare of any small transitions. Your way makes me more confident to start. If you can i will too. Thanks, appreciate what you're doing. Much love from Russia, Igor
Congratulations Steve! I’m 49 and getting back to skating (surfskate) after 40 year. Your video encouraged me to move forward. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Brazil
You literally inspired me to finally get my carver C7 (had to wait 2 months to get shipped to Australia), I thought I was “old” to start skating on my 30s, watched all your videos, and learned with you how to pump and I’m feeling GREAT with that now, after months skating and going everyday and practicing. And I’ve just started bowls this week and I was so scared but stoked. Now watching this video again, you inspired again 😅 I love so much to see your progression! You did SO WELL!
Hi, these are very nice bowls you've got there! I really like this video: it's honest, uncompromising, well-structured, motivating... and of course, the topic wouldn't have been thoroughly covered without a mention of those damn kids on their scooters (a worldwide plague, I'm afraid...) By the end of it, I also realized that there was actually a person who had to be dragged down to the bowls to shoot the videos every single of those 30 days ^^
well done, you are the best. you really encouraged me. I started surfing a year and a half ago, I'm 63 and a half years old, I started surfskating despite the fear of hurting myself. I now understand why I am not evolving, because I only practice once a week. thanks again
Just got my first surf skate at 51. Been to my local park the last two days using this as motivation and inspiration. Progress is occurring fast and these tips are awesome. Thanks.
I have gone everyday since my last comment. I’m on day 10 and on a Slide Fish Pavones 32 and have front side and back side turning getting pretty good. I still cannot connect it in a bowl but this video still is a great measuring stick. Super appreciative.
Hey Buddy, I like a lot this video.... the music and the video played during your day 1 was so funny 🤣 😆 😂. You explained very nice a clear your journey to finally achieve your goal and the best of all is end it up in Venice Beach!!! All my respect to you my friend and keep rolling 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
What a legend, nice one Steve! I’ve not skated in 20 years. I bought my first skateboard a few days ago. Super motivated to surf skate a bowl. Thanks for this excellent blue print for bowl riding and general surfskate. Inspirational channel, keep it up.
Those annoying scooter kids might have been using "the ball" learning technique, where you roll something in the bowl to gauge the transition and find a line. I've seen others list this as a tip.
I’m 51 and just started surfskating, after watching this video I’m determined to learn properly to improve my surfing and to master this amazing way of skating!!thank you
Inspirational! Just confused of your definition of "front-side" and "back-side" turns.. I thought "backside" is turning right (for a goofy), i.e., the direction where your back is. Or "heel-side".
nope - other way round - a turn towards your heels is frontside :-) it's from surfing and which side of you the wave is, and a bit confusing... but if you're not a surfer, imagine doing a 180 - if you do it towards your toes, you will be travelling back first during the turn, so backside - and if you do it towards your heels you'll be travelling front first, so frontside
@@SurfskateLove Thanks, it makes sense when you have a wave or ramp that you are APPROACHING. In extreme-carving snowboarding, there is one steep slope we are on aggregate constantly going down (there is a bit of uphill traverse to set up the turn). So I guess in this context, front-side will always be "toe-side" and back-side will always be "heel-side"? I will have to check with the extreme-carver folks - actually the movement for extreme-carving is derived from surfing (the whole start with the shoulders/hips thing is critical for the balance of the turn, as there are no fins for resistance, just the metal edge of the board biting into snow).
This program totally works! I (turning 43 and appreciate the age focused insights) can now surf skate bowls, half pipe and pools and can generate speed until my legs get tired! I just followed your advice to the letter. Park wheels were huge in this and your other video about choosing a board were instrumental in that because my skate shop questioned me on putting park wheels on a surfskate! Thanks for empowering me, Steve!
Awesome progression, great video, and really closely matches my own learning experience - I love the flow you've got at the end! One more tip - for me the breakthrough was a Shane Lai video showing that there are two pumps on every turn - I was only doing one at first. One pump to go up the transition, then compress again at the top and pump again to speed out of it. Once I was doing both pumps everything started coming together really quickly :-) Oh and for the frontside turns, pass the coffee! (OMBE viewers will know what this means...)
Amen brother! I was hanging in the the extension at the top too long. It's a quick extension at the top then a second compression and extension on the exit transition.
Me encantan tus vídeos Steve, toda una inspiración y motivación para la gente.Que suerte haber encontrado tu canal.Saludos desde el País Vasco, un abrazo bien grande.
That day 1 isn't so bad at all. I'm 58, and have ridden on and off for decades, but never had the chance to get in a bowl. I'm dying to - but don't want to die doing it. I'm trying to learn some things to work my way in.
nice video man. i have 41 and started skating at 40. i know exactly what are you talking about, and i apreciate so much, theres no age limit to skate, or to surf, or to do things you like. you rocks mate.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Dude that was so awesome dude, you even lost weight throughout the process. Oh my gosh, I just feel like going home and start practicing, very awe inspiring. Thank you so much for all of the tips! Your channel is fire!
Hi Steve, great video! had just the same issue with falling on the hip in the bowl (with a normal skateboard, getting a Surfskate these days :). Hurt for weeks and made me pretty immobile. I bought some protector trousers then (Triple Eight Bum Saver and another cheap one from Decathlon). What they have in common: they are something but not really solid protection. Do you have any proposal on a good hip protection? I am 47 and not long ago started skateboarding with my kids (so I also bring along those "damn scooter kids" ;-) )
Well done man great video, and reading the comments you have inspired loads of people including myself. Lived on skateboards when I was a teen in the 70's . Bought a Slide and can't believe how good these surfskates are compared to the ones we used. Keep those Videos up.
That's what I originally thought. But when you look up close, you see that what pops up is actually a leaf. So I think I was just too heavily weighted on my front foot and I jackknifed when I hit that transition.
Awesome Steve... Very inspiring and highly motivating being a bit older and getting started on surfskates in the bowl and skateparks... Congrats on your massive progress!
You on day 1 would be me on day 29. I'm 53, in the late 70's and all thru the 80's I stayed on a board while it was more of the Alva, Jay Adams and Peralta style of riding, noone knew of Ollies and such yet. Back then, OG Kryptonics and OJ's were considered very decent. I'm just now discovering Surfskate boards and getting educated on them. I'd probably stay with the cruising style of skating as I know of it, but have always wanted to skate an empty pool or bowl. I'm in SC, not much of that here. May have to travel one of these days. Great video
Congrats on taking the bumps along the way! Skating's a tough sport to master and you've hung in there. I'm healing from a torn hamstring and slight femur dislocation from a fall where one foot stayed on the board causing me to do a split. Unintentional splits will ruin your day. LOL.
Best video you’ve made by far. I’m in a very similar boat where I’m 45 and used to traditionally skateboard and surf. Then I discovered longboarding UNTIL I just discovered surfskate 1.5 months ago. Now I’m all in!! This is the skating movement I’ve craved my entire life of riding with loose trucks. So glad you’re making these vids.
Totally inspirational, I’m on the same journey as you, and have just started riding parks. To see what is possible in 30 days is just amazing! My big learnings are that a) you were totally focused on the goal for 30 days b) repetitions to perfect your technique (and hip pads!). Great stuff, keep up the incredibly good videos.
Hey Steve, I'm a 53 year old Onewheel rider for almost a year now. I've seen surfskates videos online and been dreaming more and more about actually doing it. So, I bought a Carver Channel Island Flyer C7 just yesterday. Man, riding a Onewheel is so much different than an actual board! I need to re-learn what I know about board riding. As you said, I've been researching and watching tutorials on surfskates and feel confident about it. Your video really inspired me to go for it while being disciplined and consistent. Thanks Steve and maybe I'll run into you in one the skate parks in SoCal someday! 😎🤙
Wow, You are such an amazing presenter and makes this old guy even more motivated to keep progressive. Thank you so much for the EXCELLENT content, taking the time to doing this. You are a wealth of knowledge sir. I ordered a smooth Star Manta Ray. (I am a surfer and I have a 23 '' stance) love it and took it to the park . It is very very different from skateboarding (I skated as a teenager for years). It is really more like surfing and being on a gliding feel, and your videos has helped me tremendously. I just have issues with getting the speed in the beginning as I do NOT drop in and totally scared of doing that.
very motivating im 54 just started last week ride everyday great excercise n fun i rode in the 70s n early 80s,,,,willget a carver surfskater i got a longbiard pintail 33 with redz bearings, bushing app to my weight 163 and new 72 mm wheels
I‘m 38 and love my surfskate. But two weeks into surfskating I broke my shoulder while trying bowl riding. All I can say it’s awesome, but I should have gone slow and should have taken small steps into bowl and Halfpipe riding. But.. there’s a point where you have to drop in finally or where you have to take the risk to progress. Anyway. Now I’m lying here in late summer, waiting impatiently to go surfskating again. I really like your channel!
Great video! Which surfskate deck/setup are you riding? Can I just buy the waterborne adapters/trucks and put them on my 33inch long x 10wide Poolking deck?
My surfskate is being delivered today. Can't wait to start my 30 day challenge. impressive what you have achieved with discipline! Which protectors for knees, wrists and elbows can you recommend?
Bro, U Killin it,. Are U still skating or just did a crash course? I don't call it Surfskate, but some do. I just call it Transition Skating or Hitting the Bowls. I started skateboarding a few years back and most of my boards are 9 inches or wider, Independent trucks, 55mm Super Juice wheels or Larger 58mm Spitfire, 60mm Slimeballz. Backside is definitely my strong side. I hate Frontside.....
(Try in english) I started on Longboard, at 45 years old, and now with 47, I can inform you that I only crashed 3 times. (I'm pretty sure this is what hinders my improvement: I fell very little!) But I walk practically every day on the city streets, and I have a hope in my heart that I still have a chance to take the telltale falls! Tanks for this video/lesson.
Inspiring! At 47 I restarted skating after more than 20 years and I'm having a blast. There are lots of skateparks now, so I'm really motivated to try bowl and pump tracks, so I'll surely watch your videos. Keep shredding!!!
Congrats and thanks for sharing with us! I'm exactly on the same vibe, riding bowls once a week with my surfskate. Of course my progress will take longer than yours, but I'm already very happy to be able to ride the transitions. Unfortunately, here we don't have bowls with the quality you showed, but still, it is very fun.
I used to bowl ride in the early 80s late 70s. I did it last week and I couldn’t even drop in. I couldn’t pump or carve. I’m disgusted about it. So I bombed hills instead.
I just sprained my foot carving a bowl on a regular street set up (52s) but I’m definitely going to have one of these set up and waiting for me when I recover. I’ve been somehow unaware of these. Great job! Do people drop in on those?
Hello. Thank you for your videos, for your contribution and commitment. Looking for a new way, I found surfskate, and at the same time you. I learn something new every time I watch your content. Well done💯🤝
The damn scooter kids! 😅They're the only reason I can't fully enjoy our awesome Velosolutions pump track. I'm like twice their size and weight, too. Just thinking a possible collision gives me so much anxiety!
Loved the video, Steve! I live 5 minutes from the Temecula skate park so I’m looking for a different place to learn to bowl ride! Keep up the great content!
Wow so inspiring Steve!! Great job on progressing so far in only a month! I have question- I ride a Smoothstar...do you think the thruster is too loose for bowl riding and that I need to get another surfskate like the Carver Cx?
I learned Bowl and ramp skating back in the 70s and we always relied on small kick turns at the top of our carves to make things easier especially with the front sides ! 😮
Your trucks didn't have much to do with the fall front side. Watch the video when you're riding backside your weight is on your back foot when you went front side all your weight was on your front foot and that took the weight off the back wheels so when your truck folded because all your weight was going that way (forward) the back end swung around!! When you pump frontside or backside keep your weight centered not too much front or too much back foot stay loose and centered
Beautiful progress and so well explained and shown! It does miss the drop-in part, that so many bowls have... not in all bowls you'll have a smooth and easy entrance. Those scooters... wow that is the most dangerous thing around skate parks! you should really find the place and the time to hit the park and avoid those. Thanks mate!!
Awesome. My goal this year is to learn bowl Riding. Unfortunately I live where they're is sweet FA skateparks. The nearest one with bowls is a very long way away and I don't drive so can only get there about once a month or so. Still gonna try tho! Just be slower
What's weird is that I can skate the way you did after 30 days but I can't skate the way you did on day 1. Those roundhouse cutbacks on the vert still doesn't work great for me.
I wear these because they’re slim and don’t make you look like you’re wearing a diaper 😂 www.burton.com/us/en/p/mens-burton-total-impact-short%2C-protected-by-gform-/W21-102881.html

Thank you.

Yes, it felt too big and bulky in the bowl for me. Even at the narrower wheelbase.
Day 30 ..Front side ... arguable better than backside .. noice

Amazing video and story Steve! I bet you were smiling all the time when bowl riding in Venice. Love it.
very motivating im 54 just started last week ride everyday great excercise n fun i rode in the 70s n early 80s,,,,willget a carver surfskater i got a longbiard pintail 33 with redz bearings, bushing app to my weight 163 and new 72 mm wheels
Venice pilgrimage... positively based.
Thanks for making this channel man, really good resource.
Amazing vid! I’m 43 just learning to surfskate now. Such a blast.
Very good video Thank you so much for sharing. Greetings from URUGUAY 🇺🇾
REALLY FUCKING COOL MAN, you had inspirited me even more, I started yesterday and Im anxious to aplicate your tips, congratulations
Soo awesome bro!! Proud of you man!! 🏄🏽♂
Best advice ever! .. Get mobillity! Yoga will do it :-)
Day 30 .. damn what a ride. U nailed it.
This is inspiring! I've always wanted to Bowl. Thought I was too old to try a bowl. New goal: Venice Skatepark! Hopefully someday soon!
(Try in english)
I started on Longboard, at 45 years old, and now with 47, I can inform you that I only crashed 3 times.
(I'm pretty sure this is what hinders my improvement: I fell very little!)
But I walk practically every day on the city streets, and I have a hope in my heart that I still have a chance to take the telltale falls!
Tanks for this video/lesson.
Dude this was AWESOME!! Many thanks for sharing! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
Love the video, what is the first skatepark you filmed? I love that mini bowl
So inspiring, i like your dedication and hardwork to your surfskating journey, thank you for sharing
Inspiring!
At 47 I restarted skating after more than 20 years and I'm having a blast.
There are lots of skateparks now, so I'm really motivated to try bowl and pump tracks, so I'll surely watch your videos.
Keep shredding!!!
Amazing cool! Like to see a happy 44y man! You video really inspire me.
Love this so much...Awesome to see the actual work and reps that go into feeling fluid and confident. Cheers to you! 🤟
Great tutorial and improvement! Love the commitment, and your film-friend deserved a treat :)
Well done💯🤝
hey thanks for the vid! these parks look great, would you mind letting me know which parks you went to? :)
This is awesome!! I want to do this!! Also, I bought the 65mm, 78a surfskate love wheel. They are great!!
The damn scooter kids! 😅They're the only reason I can't fully enjoy our awesome Velosolutions pump track. I'm like twice their size and weight, too. Just thinking a possible collision gives me so much anxiety!
So inspiring. I wish I could get there as quickly as you did, just gotta find good empty bowls to practice in :)
Loved the video, Steve! I live 5 minutes from the Temecula skate park so I’m looking for a different place to learn to bowl ride! Keep up the great content!
amazing, I started surfskate a few months ago and your content helps a lot. you gained a follower, greetings from Argetina
Nice video very inspiring. I love surfskate .good job sir from new zealand 🇳🇿.
Wow so inspiring Steve!! Great job on progressing so far in only a month! I have question- I ride a Smoothstar...do you think the thruster is too loose for bowl riding and that I need to get another surfskate like the Carver Cx?
www.surfskate.love/post/best-surfskates-bowl-riding
Great video, thanks so much! You've got nice style too. Will you do some surfing next?
What's weird is that I can skate the way you did after 30 days but I can't skate the way you did on day 1. Those roundhouse cutbacks on the vert still doesn't work great for me.
Really Impressive man!!!....WhattaFFlow🤙
I wish I had this kind of Blowl anywhere withing 500km of my home ....
Great vid . I just bought one today. You looked pro on day one compared to me. Thanks for sharing the journey
Great video! Awesome progress!
I think its a good idea wearing hip pads. Which hip pads are worth buying?
I wear these because they’re slim and don’t make you look like you’re wearing a diaper 😂 www.burton.com/us/en/p/mens-burton-total-impact-short%2C-protected-by-gform-/W21-102881.html
might not feel as cool wearing pads but it gives more confidence when your padded up and whn you fall and don sit crying in pain you look cooler lol 😅
Pump tracks really hammered my frontside turns down 👌
Absolutely inspiring, man. Thanks!
