I really appreciate you’re stoke and passion for surf skating!! Passion is a key for a happy life! I love my carver so much that don’t ride my other boards anymore 🥰 Hey all you haters out there, surf skating is here to stay so be nice!! 🤙🏼
Maybe some people think that Surfskating is a New Fashion Sport. But they don't see that it is just a more "traditional Style, which is more based on the 70's skating
A good rule of thumb is to move SLOWLY out of our comfort zone. Although each time we try to learn a new skill we WIL fall, yet we get better at bailing out. Don't rush through the development and accidents as such won't occur
Wish I’d seen this video two years ago before I took a new board on a new trail, couldn’t carve wide enough to control my speed, got speed wobbles, bailed, and fractured my elbow. No one around, no cell service, walked about a mile home all banged up and bleeding with my right arm seized up, then drove myself to the ER left-handed. Wife was seven months’ pregnant at the time and did NOT appreciate helping me get dressed and wash for the next three weeks, and physical therapy sucked. I felt so irresponsible that I swore off skating and only picked it up again a few weeks ago. Slow and steady, more focus on technique and sizing up every situation beforehand. It takes a lot of common sense and humility to just get off the board before it throws you off. Thanks for the self-preservation tips! Too much pain is in fact NOT the best teacher-I’d settle for your RUclips tutorial any day! I hope anyone reading this learns from my mistake! Stay safe out there-bones over pride.
I am learning so much from you my friend. I’m about 60 years old and just taking up surf skating for the first time in my life. I skateboarded in my youth. And I miss the feeling!!! Looks like you’re pushing 40 so you’re an inspiration to me.
This is so helpful for a novice like me who can’t afford to lose a finger due to occupation. A damn big thank you to Steve and his crew for taking the time to do this. The streets here in New England aren’t nearly as wide, but there’s no shame in walking when needed, so thanks for including that too.
Just turned 64 and been skateboarding since the 70s. For me the Carver C7 truck is the most innovative technology to come along since the urethane wheel as it finally allowed skateboards to mimic the fluidity and the pumping and carving of surfing. I go way back to the days of loose bearing Cadillac wheels and Bennett trucks fitted to 24" decks and can speak to the true terrors of high speed wobs - and have the scars to show for it! I have a Carver Fractal and Loaded Poke each fitted with C7 trucks and love the maneuverability characteristics provided by the different wheelbase of these decks. Great tips for speed control on hills - especially the get off and walk it down technique for the step and narrow!!!
First off let me say, great video. You getting off and walking on that hill you didn’t feel comfortable with was a good lesson for many. Also. It’s not the front truck that causes speed wobble it’s the rear truck. You want that tight enough to prevent speed wobble. It’s also how have your weight distributed. You want all of your weight on the front truck. This is why such a loose truck like the curfboard can do just fine on hills. It’s because it’s the rear truck that is more soild on that board. Also wear a full face helmet anytime you are bombing hills. Don’t mess around I’ve seen too many people suffer serious brain injuries and mess up their faces because they were too cool for protection. Another thing is learn to fall. There is a right way and many wrong ways to fall. You never want to try to stop yourself with your hands that is how to break them. You want to crouch in and role it out. Another thing is learn to stop just as good as you move forward. Foot brake and air brake is what you want to practice. You want to be able to foot brake safely. Never try to foot brake above 25 mph, air braking will get you to about 25mph even if you are bombing a hill at 50. Then from 25mph you can safely and slowly foot brake. Don’t let anyone peer pressure you into bombing a hill you are not comfortable with. That is how you die. They will be saying stupid shit like come on bro, yolo. That’s when you say your right yolo. I’ll live to skate another hill. Full face helmet. I can’t say it enough.
Hi Dustin, the information that you've written here is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not avoiding speed wobbles but how to control them. I will try this out shifting my weight forward and back to see the effect on the speed wobbles. Secondly, great advice, safety protection and live to ride another day :-) a damaged rider will have to sit out for days/weeks/months whilst everyone else is having fun, so thanks for that. Third, I don't know what air braking is but I won't be doing those speeds for sometime, meanwhile I will check it out. Thank you for your great response, information and advice 🙂
I would like to add to this conversation. You can use standup toe slides and heel slides to speed check the same way downhill long boarders do to “speed check” yourself. I own a hamboard logger and often time employ this to slow down on very steep hills where I can’t carve away speed because I’m either too large for the narrow hill or i might high side attempting to carve out the speed because I’ve already accumulated too much. You can also employ this method to go a LOT faster down said hill rather than just carving and sorta walking down it as you put it. My buddy rides a carver CX and employs the same method I do in order to speed check. I however don’t have a ton of experience with swing arm platforms and downhill so it might be harder to that on a Yow or Waterborne
I used to live at the bottom of the infamous 9th Avenue run in SF. It gets quite steep in places. I mostly used to slide and bomb it. Backside 9th is a roller-coaster of a hillbomb! Anyway, I carved up a hill on my surfskate the other day. It was quite fun.
I get zero speed wobble on my 37" custom Waterborne setup. Also, I carve as hard as I can for preslide (the rear wheels slide without breaking out) to slow down even more than with perfectly tracked carving. I'm 63, 6'3 and 255 lb and have been surfskating for less than 3 months, and longboarding for 3 more than that. But I am retired, so practice many hours per day.
Being able to carve down steep roads is one of the main reasons why I switched from longboarding to surfskating, back in 2016. It opened up a whole new world of possibilities.
After crashing myself, I would highly suggest any beginner to start by learning how to slide. the reason is that it's the only way to slow down quickly on high speeds. carving won't help you once you pick up speed, and the faster you go, the wider you'll have to carve, which for most roads is just not relevant. So, for your health, you have to know how to slide. jumping off the board obviously is not an option once you reach a certain speed, and you'd be surprised at how quickly you reach that speed, especially on a cruiser/longboard/surfskate.
This is why I got a Carver, for carving of course but also to control speed down (wider) hills. I mangled a finger much the way he did (2 pins) when I was a kid. 59 now and taking my time!
Thanks for the vid! I'm just about to get my first surfskate tomorrow and looking forward to carving some hills. I already carve steeps (25-32° stuff) with a snowboard and your vid confirmed I can just use the same techniques to control my speed. Thanks!
Man, it's been 10 years since I did this last time. Your video apeared last night and now I'm about to go out and carve some old spots! Thank you for the stoke!!!!!
I use to work at the Carver Skateboard Foundry when i was 16 and rode their skateboards everywhere till i was 21! I just recently got into Electric skateboards in my very limited free time but man would l love a Carver C7 truck Eskate!
Nice video! Very inspiring for me as I get back on after several years away. This is by far my favorite skate activity and brings me a lot of joy as long as I recognize my limits and act accordingly. People might scoff at me when they see me carving the streets at my age but that will never wipe the smile off my face 😀
That kind of hill skating was my favorite nearly 50 years ago, long before surfskates. I first got into skateboarding for the similarity to skiing. Skateboarding is much more accessible and much less expensive. It doesn't require travel or buying a lift ticket. Nice video! You and I had a brief discussion a few months ago. I still haven't tried a surfskate. I have been looking more closely at surf videos, and I've observed how the turning revolves around the rear part of the board, so I think I now understand better why the exaggerated front steering of a surfskate is more similar to surfing. I still have to say that at low speeds, kick turns are a great way to tighten up a turn, and they work in carving hills, too. An uphill turn can be finished with a kick turn, followed by another kick turn to point the board back down the hill. These are different ways of managing the steepness/width ratio, which is the main challenge of this kind of skating.
Agreed. I recently started to longboard and found that my longboards were difficult to carve aggressively enough to control speed at my comfort level. I’m not agile enough to slide either . Got an electric board for brakes but doesn’t carve very well All the different boards and more so the trucks are designed for different things and it’s just a matter of knowing what you are trying to do. I purchased a longer surfskate with cx trucks and find it easier to carve hard enough to control speeds on hills that used to be above my ability. I would imagine my surf skate would wobble sooner . Don’t over commit if you don’t have the skills . Bail out as soon as you get nervous because other traffic might force you to you to go straight longer than you want and quickly get in over your head . I like to keep things under 20 mph and carve .
Great advice. Been testing surfskates a few days and bought my new carver two days back (based on your recommendations). Thought I could handle a gentle slope but it was too narrow to turn, lost control and had no choice but to throw myself to the ground as I sped up also trying to avoid an oncoming bike 😅 a bit of a bloody knee and hand but lesson learned. Certainly will be looking for wider spaces and suitable for my level.
Sweet, I have been riding a longboard for a couple years, ordered a carver though, lots of hills out here. I watched this video a while back, should have paid more attention to the differences you mentioned about the surfskate. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you so much for your video!! One really important part you mentioned at the end is that you can also go straight up the hill to loose speed. I think you did not mentioned it in the beginning but when you carve from left to right it also seems like you go in an infinity/laying down 8 shape - so you also go a bit upwards at each carve! The demonstration of the steep hill was really cool - just grab the board and go down. I like to sit on my board and break with my shoe soles - sure - they won't last forever but it is fun :D
I learnt how to do this within a week, but I gotta say I knew how to actually surf from before. The most important thing to master is how to balance your weight when you are doing sharp turns, since this is the safest way to loose speed when you are going down a hill. Once you master this, you must know, by the feel and the noise made by the contact of your wheels with the ground, when they are about to drift. Knowing this you can slowly learn the limits of your board and also how to develop a decent drifting technique.
Steep and narrow hills call for a sit down on the board! 😂 I sit and drag my feet to lessen the speed if its too much lol. A fun core workout too to steer
Today I bombed a hill because I saw a yt vid say I should attack the hill, the road stole most of my skin and my bum, I'm still looking for my skin lol. I'm a noob, didn't know about carving to slow down because I end up with speed wobble. Thanks for all the insight and suggestions to handle a hill, I feel much better getting on my board again🙏🏼
What works for me is making the turn as quick And sharp as possible, pumping. Not looking for a snap, but almost, that way you lose a lot of speed and gain control again.
My experience of a narrow downhill: I tried to go down on a narrow and fast little hill (50/80m long) with my surfskate... I went straight but the speed was so high that my front truck was like moving dangerously... I decided to jump off the board but .. lol i couldnt handle the speed while on my feet after jumping😅 i've burn my knees onto the road and i almost knock myself as I hited the ground with my helmet... Well my knees were healed after 6-8 months... i still have the marks now after 1 year and half.. the best advice in this video is to go down a hill by walking if the path is narrow because its too hard to handle the speed no matter what. 😢 . Thanks for the video !!
The problem is crusing down narrower hills. I find that there's very little room to turn and I have to bail so I don't hit the side. Might also be that I'm on a cruiser board which I turned into an approximation of a surfskate by loosening my front truck a lot.
A loose traditional truck is still far off from a proper surfskate truck so you may be missing out on the ability to carve those hills. Regardless, if the hill is too narrow you’ll have to control your speed with check slides. It’s a good skill to learn even if you’re riding carvable hills.
Problem with speed wobbles is that there are no indication until it hits u :( The waterborne seems to be able to take higher speed without the wobbles as it is bushing based compared to smoothstar (spring) which was my 1st time expriencing speed wobbles. There was not enough width to carve out & no safe way to bail out. Thought speed wobbles only happens at much higher speed! Was I wrong. Doesn't take much speed for a wobble to throw u off. Good that u shared this. Another tip to add, is that when the wobble kicks in, is to shift as much weight to the front feet to try & reduce the wobble till u level out & pray that u can hold on till then. Basically that's what I did that saved me from being washed out :) What I do now after the harrowing experience is to practice tight carves as possible with my different deck setups to gauge the minimum width needed to decide to carve & slide or just walk down.
I suppose learning to do speed checks would be easier on a downhill kinda longboard... Furthermore, trying speed checks with superflat, concave free YOW like boards seems to be a recipe for disaster.
I would add some sliding cloves so you can go deeper for extra fun. Always wear a helmet. It prevents you from ending up being a "plant". No helmet,no respect told me some hardcore downhill guys!!!
Don’t need a helmet for this. That’s the whole point. That’s downhill longboarders saying that. Of course it applies to that. This is a whole different deal though.
@@SurfskateLove Lol no it's not. The point is to enjoy yourself and stay fit etc. The point of a helmet is to not become a plant in the process. You're arguably more likely to hit your head at low speeds. I wear a helmet pumping on a wide skateboard with cruiser wheels. You need a helmet for any skating unless you want to risk becoming a vegetable. Look up the vid with the ex skater with a massive dent in his skull. Stay safe man
I am even fully padded when trying some new tricks. It looks stupid but I don't care. I now carving down is much slower but still.... I've seen very bad bails. But it's up to you.
@@ShinShinoke Well I fell very bad at a lower speed. I live in a shut down gravel pit. The just put buildings into it. Just a little stone in your way and thats it. I just heard a,"hrrrrr" And I knew what was gonna happen next. But also u need to know how to fall to not have sticking bones out off your body.
@@minaha1975 You can fit pads under loose trousers easily. I need to wear knee pads. Will do when learning to slide and learning tricks for sure, as my knees are still recovering (not from a hit, but messed them up over skating). I always wear a helmet and gloves. Need to learn to bail properly though (ninja roll).
This is a great video, thank you. Got a z-flex with waterborne setup on the way and I did t realise that you could carve hills so easily with surfskate so I'm looking forward to trying out the techniques in this vid 🤙
yooo hello. And so, I was just commenting due to my experience, when i go downhill with a surfskate, (I go downhill with a smoothstar ), I just throw slides here and there, I haven't fallen once since I started.
"take mah strong hand, child!" haha loving your videos man! i'm about to get into surfskating myself. Not gonna lie, the Swell tech is tickling my fancy. I think you dont like it very much though. Excellent content.
I do this with a Ripstick. The advantage is that it stops almost immediately rather than shooting off like a bullet when you bail on it. You can pull some pretty tight turns on it due to the the two-wheel configuration. However, I just bought a Carver so I'll have to try the four-wheel version I guess. I've seen various surfskating videos where guyz just carve in and out of driveways all the way down the hill. Are homeowners all good with that where you are?
На длинных и узких склонах, где нет места для разворота, у меня получается сбросить скорость когда я еду змейкой, при повороте перенося вес ближе к передним колёсам. Не сработает с большим уклоном, но в принципе работает, и можно не идти пешком
Very good video. I live in a small town in Italy, the wider descent is like the tighter of your town🤣 It’s impossibile carving downhill with a surfskate! Anyway, I love your videos. Surfskate is pure fun!
Hi! I've been loving your content! Was feet pain a thing for you? I tend to feel pain in my feet very quickly when surfskating due to frequent weight shifts.
I bought the Sector 9. I was wondering how you carve so easily. My Sector doesn't carve as easily, especially being a beginner. But it can gather speed going downhill, which is terrifying. 😂
Miss having these wide wide streets back in the States but now that I'm in Singapore a lot of the paths are way too narrow so I end up having to walk the board most of the time 😢 been trying to learn how to slide in situations where I need to brake
lot of love from kashmir, recently I fell while skateboarding on a downhill at over 60KPH speed after that I am still on reset, but after 3 months , inshallah i will start again! but the problem here is we have 10 feet road w! button line
Just wanted to say I'm a new watcher and just subscribed, I've come across your channel through shred shack. I've longboarded for over 10 years now and I'm now super interested in grabbing a surfskate for myself. Would you have a recommendation? I'm 6 ft and 200 lbs. Appreciate the channel thanks for what you do!
Do you find yourself picking between the CX and Meraki when going out for a cruise? Or gravitate towards the CX if hitting hills or bowls? Just got a Meraki myself but I prefer the stability of the CX so far!
I love your run. I’m in San Diego but I don’t know of a safe no car run at least in my area. Would love to hang out with you and do your run. And even end up at the skate park! Fan of surf skate love!
How big is tat wheels sir?, N if u don't mind answering some questions, can surfskate be used on rough surface? N how the setup would be? Wheels size etc?
Wish i knew what carving was and you know other basic stuff like braking before i put longboard wheels and trucks on a skateboard because hillbombing "looks badass duuude". Kids learn those things. My back is fucked for life because i was ignorant and bombed the steepest hill i found, i even remember thinking how the fuck do i stop before falling.

Great instructions! I am in love with my surfskate and learning a lot with you! Thanks!
That makes me happy to hear! Thanks for sharing!
Your roads are so wide and empty, I would of been hit by 30 cars already doing that here in UK. Love the video very helpful and great skills!!
What works for me is making the turn as quick And sharp as possible, pumping. Not looking for a snap, but almost, that way you lose a lot of speed and gain control again.
great vid. i have been carving down hills as i get better at surfskating
Pra mim só aparecem em inglês com legendas também em inglês!
Yikes! Stay careful out there!
Were u wearing kneepads ?
I’ll never forget the first time I went downhill with my Carver board and completely lost control haha
You are so great. Thanks from Spain.
These videos are informative & entertaining. It’s really flat here in Chicago, but at least I know for just in case…
Yikes! And yep, that’s exactly what you have to do.
Thank you so much for your videos, you really share your love of surf skating with us and that's very inspiring.
Great video, Really cool street section at 6:30
Your videos really are top tier. Thank you so much for the work you do
Love your tutorial videos!
Very important topic and great video!
Your next step is to do some speed checks to shed speed where you don't have much room.
This guy is a treasure
Thanks guy, very good!!!
This is a great video, thank you. Got a z-flex with waterborne setup on the way and I did t realise that you could carve hills so easily with surfskate so I'm looking forward to trying out the techniques in this vid 🤙
Such wide and quiet streets! Very lucky!
Your flexibility has improved drastically!
Yep! I've been doing yoga every day for about the past three months. It has made a world of difference.
Great to see you getting some speed. 🤙
Seus Vídeos aparecem em Português e por isso posso acompanhar as dicas e os ensinamentos " Obrigado" muito legal!
Absolutely helpfull! Thanks!! Greetings from the Netherlands
thank you so much!!!!!!!!!! love your videos!!!
I am still wondering why do Americans have streets wider than usual highway in Europe...
Thank you so much for these great tips!
Not for my style of riding. Not good for rough terrain and long distances.
@@SurfskateLove that's a very useful tip! Thank you.
Yeah, I met all the homeowners and asked permission.
Thanks from germany. Very helpful. 🤙❤️
Excellent content on your channel 👏. I've just bought a surfskate to aid with my surf progression in my 40s 😆. Keep up the good work
Awesome! That makes me happy to hear!
Learning on roads less than half that size!! Amazing, where is this filmed and where’s all the traffic?
St. George, Utah on a Sunday morning. Everyone is at church, haha.
Amazing spot, amazing teachings
This is awesome. Thanks.
Hi! I've been loving your content!
Was feet pain a thing for you? I tend to feel pain in my feet very quickly when surfskating due to frequent weight shifts.
Thanks from Russia!!! ЯНАО здесь! 😎🤙
Hey, I wonder how the cam man shoot it, riding backward? Once again great video, it made my day!
GoPro on a headstrap facing backwards while riding a scooter in front of me. :-)
I bought the Sector 9. I was wondering how you carve so easily. My Sector doesn't carve as easily, especially being a beginner. But it can gather speed going downhill, which is terrifying. 😂
Miss having these wide wide streets back in the States but now that I'm in Singapore a lot of the paths are way too narrow so I end up having to walk the board most of the time 😢 been trying to learn how to slide in situations where I need to brake
singapore guy here , i know what you're talking about , im gonna practice my foot braking ....without my foot breaking
lot of love from kashmir, recently I fell while skateboarding on a downhill at over 60KPH speed after that I am still on reset, but after 3 months , inshallah i will start again! but the problem here is we have 10 feet road w! button line
Where is this the nature and terrain looks nice
Roads look so wide where you are. UK is a challenge for downhill with a surfskate 😅
Muito bom Steve, ótimas dicas!
Those driveways were sweet!!!
..love soundtrack
Great videos. Which truck/board setup would be best for longer distance pumping while preserving some surf training qualities? 16.5 inch wheelbase.
Carver CX
We would love to visit and ride with you someday soon! ❤️ Amazing video!
That's gonna happen fo sho, either here or in Italy!
Thank you brother
Does garage entries are perfect to practice snaps 🤙
itd be cool to see a flexibility progression video
Just wanted to say I'm a new watcher and just subscribed, I've come across your channel through shred shack. I've longboarded for over 10 years now and I'm now super interested in grabbing a surfskate for myself. Would you have a recommendation? I'm 6 ft and 200 lbs. Appreciate the channel thanks for what you do!
Thank you! Check out my free Surfskate Selector app here: surfskate.love/surfskate-selector/
Have fun!
@@SurfskateLove beautiful. Super stoked! Thank you
Do you find yourself picking between the CX and Meraki when going out for a cruise? Or gravitate towards the CX if hitting hills or bowls? Just got a Meraki myself but I prefer the stability of the CX so far!
It seems like Steve prefer the Meraki for cruising and the CX for bowls.
Yes, I go back and forth.
I love your run. I’m in San Diego but I don’t know of a safe no car run at least in my area. Would love to hang out with you and do your run. And even end up at the skate park! Fan of surf skate love!
will using braking gloves help🤔
Bomb my 1st hill ( bridge) with a water borne set up scard the crap didnt carve just rode it stright down has speed wobble but straightened it out
Yikes! Stay safe out there!
How big is tat wheels sir?, N if u don't mind answering some questions, can surfskate be used on rough surface? N how the setup would be? Wheels size etc?
These are 70mm wheels in this video. Yes, a surfskate can be used on rough surfaces. Just use bigger and softer wheels.
@@SurfskateLove ah i see, can u suggest me the size to play on road? I kept thinking of 70 mm n 75mm
@@wn_Hulda I would stick to 70mm. If you go bigger, you'll need to add riser pads to prevent wheelbite.
@@SurfskateLove i bought a full set surfboard, it also come with pad riser? Or is it normal?
My only problem is my pathways aren’t nearly as wide. Definitely love the concept tho
Hi bro.... Wath do you think about nkx surfskate,? Regards from Ecuador
Haven't been able to get one so I don't know.
My wheels wobbles when i go doen a hill i have a carver black beauty c7
This is doooope
