- Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 features a final scene with Anxiety as Riley goes through an anxiety attack. It's one of the hardest scenes in Inside Out 2 to watch, but also an essential part that audiences resonate with. What makes this anxiety attack so powerful? The anxiety attack scene was easily the most powerful scene of the film, along with “I’m Not Good Enough,” and it’s insane to see just how much time and effort went into executing it perfectly. It’s amazing to see studios try so hard to correctly portray mental health in a meaningful manner, especially in child-friendly media, in which that sort of stuff tends to get overlooked, despite the fact so many go through it.
Exactly!

I’m so happy with how animation’s been showcasing anxiety lately. First with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the Spider Verse short, and now here in Inside Out 2.
Agreed. All three broke me 💔🔥.
I loved the anxiety attack scene. I even teared up at it. I felt seen, because that was exactly how I get overwhelmed myself. Also, the "I'm not good enough" and the "I'm a good person" phrases absolutely tugged on my heartstrings. It felt exactly how I was thinking.
As an adult, I was blown away by this movie, especially with that scene.
I guess Puss in Boots: The Last Wish isn't the only movie that can make a great, realistic depiction of a panic/anxiety attack.
I guess inside out 2 did it better.
@@raymondmaciel4047 They're both very good. Both characters are experiencing a panic attack for different reasons.
This was easily the most intense part for me that had me shed tears, especially when Anxiety shed one herself. I had one anxiety attack, and it was absolutely horrible. My blood pressure went up and I was trembling and listless, and I could barely sleep that night. I was full of turmoil that took months to recover from. I won't go into the specifics of what led to that anxiety attack, but seeing Riley have one and Anxiety going out of control subconsciously reminded me of it.
I’m sorry you went through that, it must have felt terrible. I hope you’re doing better rn 🫶
@@Isahiscool I'm doing ok. It was a few years ago and while I'll never forget it, it thankfully doesn't actively bother me anymore.
As a person with severe anxiety and trauma, this scene was way too realistic. I saw the film on Sunday, and that scene had me close to tears. The way Pixar portrays anxiety attacks is honestly amazing. I have panic/anxiety attacks way too often, and this film really made me feel seen. I honestly think that it’s good that they have more of this in the media, and the accuracy of showing what people like me go through. Some people need to know that we’re not “exaggerating” or “overreacting”, and that even things that may seem small have a bigger impact on people with anxiety/trauma. I honestly love Disney and Pixar and think their films are beautiful. I’m so glad they can see what we go through.
Same here
I remember having a anxiety attack while there was a tornado siren going off. It was the first time I had ever heard one so obviously I was freaked and the alarm on my phone didn’t make it any better. I started breathing hard and felt full of fear of what might happen. It took some calming down from my grandmother and my mom to finally put a stop to it. Honestly the way inside out 2 put it really seems like what would happen if you had different emotions.
OMG I hope you ended up okay afterwards!
There was no tornado it was just a very bad storm
If I had a nickel for every time an animated film in the 2020s featured a main character going through an anxiety/panic attack and said film was a sequel released about a decade after the original, I’d have two nickels (this and Puss in Boots The Last Wish). Seriously though, I loved this climax. I’ve been on medication for anxiety for years now and can definitely relate to what Riley was going through in that moment. Sometimes it does feel like your brain is a tornado and there’s a million thoughts and you don’t know where you are. And then all the emotions gathered around the new Sense of Self and Riley was able to calm herself down to relax in self-acceptance and (literal) joy!…I…have no words… I’m getting emotional just thinking about it. It was kinda incredible to see. I love this movie.
"Oh,Boohoo, let me play the world's smallest violin for you."
That scene was so real, not only because of Riley's panic attack, but also seeing Anxiety's breakdown.
I genuinely found that scene very emotional, because it reminded me of the times when I suffered something that was close to an anxiety attack in situations that I couldn't control and it often made me break down, mentally and emotionally.
It really hit home for me and I was suprise how well executed the scene was.
Next to Puss in boots, this is one of the best scenes depicting an panic attack in animation history to me. It was so well executed and the team did an amazing job

Valiskibum, this really touched my heart. You explained everything very sympathetically and as someone who experiences anxiety attacks this scene almost made me cry. And I don't know how to explain it but this video is really comforting.
i’m so glad this movie was made just so that my family can really see how much an anxiety attack affected me back then. i believe there are different ways anxiety triggers people. i didn’t get them from thinking i wasn’t good enough but because i felt like i had no purpose on earth and that my life would lead to nothing. It’s scary because you feel vulnerable in any kind of anxiety attack but i want everyone to know that you always have a place in this world even when it seems like it’s going against that. I felt small in this infinite universe for 3 years but with all my suffering i came to realize that we all live in our own worlds in ourselves. Stay Strong People !
That anxiety attack was the most relatable scene. It looked just like I pictured it did when I had my first and so far only one in my high school cafeteria
I really loved how they depicted it internally, with Anxiety progressively speeding up more and more, constantly micromanaging every aspect of the Control Panel, until she’s moving *so fast* that the only point that she’s fully visible in the sheer whirlwind of her motion is a still image of herself, frozen in fear just like Riley is.
The fact that this took 25 meeting to make a scene like that is mind boggling. Pixar truly made an awesome comeback. Recently animated movies in the 2020 decade like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Paw Patrol: The Movie and The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse short film have done animated panic attacks that were accurate (Velma does NOT count!), now we’ve got Inside Out 2 depicting realistic panic attacks like this. Pixar has truly nailed it. One of my favorite sequels alongside Toy Story 2.
I watched the movie and I thought they did an AMAZING job, I'm glad they took their time with the scene, I started crying a bit along with my older brother and his girlfriend.
I just came back from seeing inside out 2 and I can confirm the whole movie hits hard as heck
Especially that “you grow up you feel less joy” line. 😢
Very relatable.
The way Anxiety was just stuck there inside the middle of the manic tornado surrounding her. With No other emotion able to touch her.
Standing completely motionless with a blank stare. As one tear rolled down her terrified face.
I don’t know how Pixar did it, but they truly captured the inside feeling of an anxiety/panic attack. Bravo
Detail I loved was the focus on individual senses, listen to her heart beat slow, feeling the bench, etc, to ground herself coming down
They nailed this scene, especially with the movement. Moving a million miles a second but also paralyzed and the performance from the actress made it that much better.
That Anxiety attack moment with the emotions was crazy and it shows how much work Pixar put into the scene
That scene kinda reminded me of the panic attack scene from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Just finished watching the movie and that scene got my heart racing, I was about to cry because I related to this specif8c scene deeply.

Everything about this scene was well executed Pixar really took into consideration how they want the scene to be and how it make others feel a relatable feeling they may have felt before or even now to help them with what there dealing with
As someone who struggles from anxiety attacks quite often, this scene definitely hit home for me
This scene reminded me of a time when I was in high school. A spoiled brat caused a loud scream and caused me to have an anxiety attack. One day, she took it too far and got me kicked out of theater class.
This scene is VERY relatable for my mom. We had conversations during this movie and she even asked my dad if anxiety has changed her personality. She would describe her experience and how my sister also went through it. This movie did a great job showing how anxiety can affect people.❤️
I’ve had some pretty bad anxiety attacks in the past so that scene was really personal
Love the profile picture
This scene was incredibly relatable and is a great representation of what it feels like to lose your sense of self in having such high expectations in what you could or should achieve, and, perhaps, to have an immense amount of pressure to succeed and make others proud. Anxiety, in this scene, could be perceived as hidden desire to feel acknowledged and loved for your capabilities and talents, as what Riley desires from her team, her coach, and her parents, but not knowing if it will be truly attained, or how exactly to attain it, despite countless ideas to do just that. The emotion of anxiety is so powerful, it absolutely can numb and suppress so many other emotions and feelings that otherwise would help give some relief, comfort, and insight as to how to deal with such internal chaos caused by anxiety. When Anxiety fully recognizes the damage and unbearable panic that she is causing Riley - which breeds Riley’s anxiety attack - she starts to cry - not only for causing the other emotions and Riley pain, but also because Anxiety can no longer handle her own destructive feelings of anxiety and panic. That is the part - and the only part in the entire movie - that made me break down, too. Sadness can be felt by even Anxiety, which demonstrates the power of the relieving and healing emotion of sadness, even felt by an emotion that so desperately tries to escape any feeling of pain, as that is what the emotion of anxiety is known to try and attempt to prevent in our lives. Personally, sadness is the emotion that offers me the most insight, understanding, and knowledge as to how to deal with many circumstances in my life, just as Riley’s mother’s brain, which is predominantly controlled by sadness. Sadness allows us to embrace the vulnerability of simply living the many faces of the human experience we all have, and, in my eyes, remains the true hero in both films.
This scene really got me; I was tensed up throughout the whole scene and I was like "Is she gonna have a heart attack?" And that one sentence, "I'm not good enough," was painfully relatable for me
Definitely one of the most intense scenes in any animated movie I've seen. And now that I've seen an accurate representation of an anxiety attack, I think I may have had a small one a month ago...

I don’t see a lot of people talking about this detail, so I’ll bring it up here: what Riley does to calm herself down after the anxiety attack, she doesn’t just *breathe* out. She also does a technique that helps to bring you back to the present using your senses. I’m not sure the exact order, but it goes something like this, First, is find five things you can feel, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can smell, 2 things you can see, and 1 thing you can taste. She only finds one thing for each of her senses, but she does find something to feel: the wood of the bench, something to hear: the players on the ice,(the last time I watched the scene fully I don’t think she even does all of them, she seems to skip the smell and probably taste?) but the third thing she does see are her *2* friends.
The second I saw this scene in theaters, I immediately got flashbacks to Puss’ panic attack in The Last Wish.
I loved this scene. I had an anxiety attack a couple months ago, and it was the worst ever humanly possible. I had no idea you could get sick for days afterwards, I could barely walk, move, eat, etc. It was hell.
The scene was relatable to me but it was on a smaller scale and seemed to go away for Riley rather quickly, but I’m glad there’s representation for anxiety attacks now in Pixar.
Pixar is actually saving itself, i hope they see all this positive feedback so they know how to work now.
Fr, but nothing matches them years ago, while cooking up inside out 1: "BINGBONG, you made it joy! Go on, save Riley. Take her to the moon for me ❤🩹😭"
I’ve struggled with mental health all my life and I loved the movie as during the scene where she has the anxiety attack I really resonated as I’ve had way to many of them. The way they captured how anxiety’s sense of self is “I’m not good enough” really hit hard as for most of my life I’ve lived by that. It wasn’t until I got help that I myself chose to feel joy and am in a much better headspace
My doctor said an anxiety attack is basically an hart attack for babies as the way they described it
I have bad anxiety problems so when I heard about this scene I had to see it for myself. The vibrating backgrounds detail was spot on because when you’re of the verge of the attack, at least in my experience, your head will have an almost vibrating sensation until it hurts. Maybe it’s just me, but I usually end up actually having an almost meltdown in the middle of the attack with uncontrollable crying and before I can stop it all of a sudden I can’t breathe and my eyes won’t focus. So yes, very good portrayal of an anxiety attack. I approve.👍
This scene was all to real, but the part that REALLY hit for me was the mixed inner self, where her thoughts kept changing like "'I'm not good enough", "I am a good person", "I am a terrible friend" etc. THAT is what I found most relatable
I love that part.

Anxiety being based off electricity is incredibly accurate. When I have an anxiety attack it really does feel like my brain is generating an unstable amount of electricity that uncomfortably travels throughout the rest of my body, especially my heart.
