I am a pediatric psychologist and myself, along with my colleagues, adore Inside Out and often utilize it in therapy with clients to help explain emotions. Inside Out 2 was just as impactful. I particularly loved the moments as Riley is calming/recovering from the anxiety attack. One coping skill we teach is using your 5 senses to ground yourself to your physical reality when you are having an anxiety attack. When Riley is calming, the animators focus on the feel of her hand on the bench, the sound of the hockey puck on the ice, her eyes as she looks up for the first time. What a lovely and accurate representation of grounding oneself!
I am not a psychologist. I am a disabled mom of 3 girls with CPTSD and an unhealthy obsession with learning about psychology and mental health. I OFTEN use Inside Out to explain the value/validity of and need to feel our emotions and not "surpress" them to both my daughters AND my adult friends. Inside Out 2 is a furtherance of this, and a message I wish I had been taught as a child... the difference between anxiety helping and hurting us. My 12yo and I cried together during the anxiety attack scene as we both are susceptible to panic attacks. The way they portrayed the paralysis that anxiety can provoke when at its worst. I believe both of these films to be a necessary lesson in emotional intelligence that should be mandatory to children and adults. That you for the work you do.
That was also my favorite part. I have CPTSD and have done several different types of therapies including DBT. When Riley used those skills, I immediately thought of self-soothe!

When anxiety said "I just wanted to protect her" That's when I felt a tear on my face. Because that is essentially anxieties job. They're completely correct with their introduction, they protect us from things we cannot see. But like the first movie, it shows too much of any emotion can be a bad thing. In the first movie it was too much joy, and now it's too much anxiety. Which I think is a very clever theme.
I love how Riley’s friend’s emotions quite literally spilled “the tea” on the console to reveal they weren’t going to the same school. It’s such a little thing but I loved it.

Dude I love your enthusiasm, and the first movie also meant a lot to me. I was going through depression and the first movie made me realise how important and healthy Sadness is: for a couple of years, if only I allowed myself to cry and have a good talk with my friends and family (instead of pretending that everything was fine) I would have never had depression to begin with. It is more than OK to be sad. Sadness helps you cope with the pressure of life and ultimately, it helps you stay mentally healthy and happy. It’s when you have no emotions left that you should be worried (bc that’s what depression is)
I work at a movie theater, so my boyfriend and I got to watch it Wednesday night. I think this film is honestly better than the first one, and I thought it was so funny and heartfelt. This is genuinely one of my favorite films of recent times.
The vault scenes ,and Character had me crying of laughter, i loved how the sword dude just rolled away after trapping the guards ,and how dumb pouchy's bag choices were.
Anxiety is my main pilot. Growing up with ADHD it's hilarious how many people think we're jack's of all trades, but everything we've had to learn felt like a life or death situation. It's paradoxical and the dances with hyperfocus are great for escapism, but it's all because the fear of "what if?"
Super cool to see Erik getting the attention he deserves. I'm happy to see how New Rockstars started and where their are now. I'm usually on here for Marvel content but I find myself watching anything Erik comes out with because he's so good at what he does. I really enjoy this channel and hope Erik keeps on getting the recognition he deserves and hopefully produces films in the future. I'll be looking forward to it!!!!
I saw this movie with my son today..never paid attention to the first movie..i got the gist of the movie in the beginning and the lesson at the end hit me in the gut..i shed so many tears this was such a powerful movie. Never would have thought a kids movie would hit me this hard
Tbh i believe this movie would hit harder for adults than for children, because of how many more things adults have been through than kids, the feeling of relate would be wayyy stronger
I might have peed my pants a little when Anger called for pouchy, from laughing so hard. Absolutely love this movie. Anxiety was perfectly portrayed! A great emotional roller coaster of a movie!
While watching the movie yesterday I was hoping and waiting for a moment where they would mention Bing Bong. Just a small moment to remember his sacrifice. I really wanted Joy to mention Bing Bong to Sadness since they were the only 2 who remembered Bing Bong. Unfortunately we didn’t get that though. However I’m still glad Joy remembers him by having that origami figurine and his rocket on her shelf in the bedroom scene.
On 20:00 during this scene a mind worker drives by and screams, "That's a Sar-chasm. It can open for miles." This is Jake, a mind worker who was a cop in the last film. He is played by the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.
I just saw Inside Out 2 today. I was speechless. It’s simply amazing. I did cry towards the end. Overall I feel more confident in myself. This movie shows that you can be anyone you want. Great video! ❤
I also like that if you think about it “a flood of bad memories” is exactly what you can feel when you have anxiety or are sad. When all the memories come flooding in and it just overwhelms you
I was so scared Bing Bong would return, I am so glad he didn't, but that also Joy hasn't forgotten him, and that interview section makes me feel a thousand times more respect for the artistic integrity of this movie than I did before, it's such a good feeling
I loved the first movie and I was afraid of being let down, but I was worried for nothing. This sequel was perfect and d builds on all the great lessons of the original. As a father of a pre-teen, this was great insight!

We went Thursday night and I was stunned at how deep this went. I mean I liked the first one but this, this story about anxiety taking over your life and changing who you are...we walked out just blown away at how insanely sophisticated it was without ever being too much for kids. Such a good movie and one I will keep with me every time I start to spiral.
Wow Erik, what a touching video. We haven’t seen the movie yet, but the way you analyze it has brought me to tears. Thank you for the care you take with this channel.
I watched it with my sister yesterday and we were legit suppressing our laughter inside the cinema when the belief system was introduced because I said "hey this is also a representation of where our delulus are built" LMAO. That’s so cool that your wife worked on the film! What did she do? I really appreciate this breakdown of this amazing film! Your love and care for film and how you cover it is beautiful Eric! I’ve never felt so known by a film before. As someone who has PTSD and has struggled with anxiety attacks and panic attacks more frequently since the world changed in 2020 this film is very cathartic for me. I was sobbing in the theater when Riley’s new sense of self echoed “I’m not good enough” through her mind. Hearing you talking about what Joy says after in that scene even has me tearing up watching this breakdown. The portrayal of Riley’s anxiety attack was so real and I loved when all the emotions hugged together over the core belief structure. She was able to feel all her emotions at once and lean into her senses to ground herself with the sound of the skates and temperature of the ring etc. She allowed herself to feel her emotions and then grounded herself to let them pass. This is something that has taken me years to learn as an adult so I am overjoyed that they depicted this in the film so well for younger audiences to learn how to feel and cope. LOVE THIS FILM!!! Thank your wife from me and mine!
I watched this sitting next to me 15 year old son. He was mostly talking to his friends and not paying much attention, but I kept giving him looks like “how do you not see yourself in this!!!?” 😂
I can really relate to what you experienced. Back then when this movie was released, I was going through some difficult transitions in my life. This movie enabled me to express some of my unexpressed emotions and live through another day...day by day. Thank you for this.
My thought process for the bad/embarrassing memories being part of Riley's personality/sense of self in the end was that we need to have bad experiences and make mistakes to become the person we are and to truly grow.
This breakdown felt so personal! Thanks Eric for sharing your story, I think that's what makes you and the channel stand out. Let me share mine. I had only heard of this channel, mostly negative - hyper theories or clickbaits. So never really checked it out but one day stumbled upon a video and I liked it. I am not a fan of theories and rumour videos but I love watching Breakdowns by Eric because he adds so much of himself in it. It's more than the easter eggs and references. For me, the anxiety attack scene was when this movie went from good to great. I related to this film’s take on anxiety way more than I would like to.

I agree, the first one was good but this...this is next level.
The vault scenes ,and Character had me crying of laughter, i loved how the sword dude just rolled away after trapping the guards ,and how dumb pouchy's bag choices were.
We know where we can find dynamites now😂
ohh pouchie!!!
@@luminxscent5235 exactly, what i thought was how much the message would have helped me as a kid
You should watch Orion and the Dark if you haven’t already, another banger from this year
6:42 that is not a hair net IT IS A BONNET!
😂I wanted to say that. He doesn’t have long hair so it’s probably not in his radar to learn what it is lol
“So Bing Bong is gone, right?”
“Yep”
“Gone but never forgotten.”
Uhhh, yeah he literally is
I think he meant, not forgotten by Joy
Ok
Let us assume they talked about it before Inside Out 2 released. I am glad Joy has a Bing Bong origami too!
I feel like "pouchie" was more like "Toodles" from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
It was
I think it might all make sense now
thats what i thought too! it was so obvious too, the way he flipped around and brought out 3 items, 2 of which being obviously not needed.
and also when he literally calls "OH POUCHIE" which is a direct parody of "OH TOODLES"
@@Grenko SO THATS WHEN I THOUGHT WHEN I WAS IN THE THEATER IT FELT FAMILIAR SMH
That Anxiety freeze scene is one most brilliant, intense and heart breaking moments
6:55 anger is actually fighting his nightmares
On 20:00 during this scene a mind worker drives by and screams, "That's a Sar-chasm. It can open for miles." This is Jake, a mind worker who was a cop in the last film. He is played by the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.
The first Inside Out is my favorite movie of all time. The sequel lives up to the first. And this recap is fantastic!
I just saw Inside Out 2 today. I was speechless. It’s simply amazing. I did cry towards the end. Overall I feel more confident in myself. This movie shows that you can be anyone you want.
Great video! ❤
There are so many meanings you can take from this movie, for me I said "your emotions don't decide who you are"
“My wife Kelly worked on this film for 2.5 years and our son is listed as one of the production babies in the credits.” That’s so cool!!! ❤
I loved how the bad emotions flooded into the pool, Showing how All of our feelings make us who we are.❤
I also like that if you think about it “a flood of bad memories” is exactly what you can feel when you have anxiety or are sad. When all the memories come flooding in and it just overwhelms you
@@mrnoname5183 I thought that was a really nice touch too
I was so scared Bing Bong would return, I am so glad he didn't, but that also Joy hasn't forgotten him, and that interview section makes me feel a thousand times more respect for the artistic integrity of this movie than I did before, it's such a good feeling
7:05 Nice to see an Easter egg with Bing Bong. Seeing Joy with a Bing Bing action figure is wholesome.
I just want to hug Erik now, so precious
12:13 not him doing a high voice😂😂😂
I loved the first movie and I was afraid of being let down, but I was worried for nothing. This sequel was perfect and d builds on all the great lessons of the original. As a father of a pre-teen, this was great insight!
anxiety looking like gollum lol
Wasn’t a fan of the movie bc of anxiety tbh joy and sadness definitely the best characters
@@alexistecca408i think that’s the point tho lol
Why are you making me cry at the end man, I didn’t even cry that much during the movie
Inside out 2 might be the movie of the summer for me. It was a treat to watch it and had a great time watching it
I think you missed when they’re in imagination land again and find the secret anxiety camp place on one of the screens it shows the “distracted boyfriend” meme
Yeahh ikr, i thought the vid would mention that but it didnt 🥲🥲

And I started thinking about things when sometimes I feel like an *sshole or a douchebag and thank goodness it didnt solidified as part of my belief system....or did it, LOL
I went to go see this movie yesterday. This movie felt so deep. Thinking about how anxiety runs people’s lives.
I watched this sitting next to me 15 year old son. He was mostly talking to his friends and not paying much attention, but I kept giving him looks like “how do you not see yourself in this!!!?” 😂
21:25 Also there was a screen where it’s recreated the boyfriend caught meme.
I legit cried in this movie...
My 6 year old was like
Mommy is this too emotional for you
😭😭😭
I really liked the introduction of belief systems that form our sense of self. Interesting to hear that it came Kate in the development of the movie!
I can really relate to what you experienced. Back then when this movie was released, I was going through some difficult transitions in my life. This movie enabled me to express some of my unexpressed emotions and live through another day...day by day. Thank you for this.
I can’t wait to see what they could do for an Inside Out 3.
YES! Congrats to your fam being part of this masterpiece
That was quick Mr. Eric... This franchise has supported people through their darkest phases. Love them with all my heart.
Great story and self reflection at the end
inside out 2 was such a good movie
My thought process for the bad/embarrassing memories being part of Riley's personality/sense of self in the end was that we need to have bad experiences and make mistakes to become the person we are and to truly grow.
How perfect i just watch this movie
This breakdown felt so personal! Thanks Eric for sharing your story, I think that's what makes you and the channel stand out.
Let me share mine.
I had only heard of this channel, mostly negative - hyper theories or clickbaits. So never really checked it out but one day stumbled upon a video and I liked it.
I am not a fan of theories and rumour videos but I love watching Breakdowns by Eric because he adds so much of himself in it. It's more than the easter eggs and references. I love his analysis of the story, what it's trying to say, how filmmaking was used to drive the point, the philosophy behind it. I love all that which is unique to the channel and him.
Keep doing it ❤
I really like the speech that the director gave about the second movie and what not to do and what you do.
after sseing the movie i think maya hawk did a amazing job as anxiety along with everyone else
I still soo connect with this movie damn it makes me cry every single time. I just love that both of the films relate to our lives and what we went through, now that's the Pixar magic, those magical moments I am a pediatric psychologist, and I, along with my colleagues, adore Inside Out and often utilize it in therapy with clients to help explain emotions. Inside Out 2 was just as impactful. I particularly loved the moments as Riley was calming/recovering from the anxiety attack. One coping skill we teach is using your 5 senses to ground yourself in your physical reality when you are having an anxiety attack. When Riley is calming, the animators focus on the feel of her hand on the bench, the sound of the hockey puck on the ice, and her eyes as she looks up for the first time. What a lovely and accurate representation of grounding oneself! 31 minutes ago I just want to hug Erik now, so precious I haven’t even watched the movie yet but here I am That was quick Mr. Eric... Anxiety can be difficult to control
Any athlete that went to camps like this at that age will tell you how accurate this is. Especially those that took pride in working harder than the other kids.
By the end of the video, when you were talking about your experience with the first film, and how it taught you crying is good, you legitimately made me cry too.

I loved the inclusion of the anxiety attack because that’s something I have to deal with, and I got my first anxiety attack back in 8th grade (not too long ago) so I know exactly what it felt like for Riley and the scene blew me away! Seriously loved it so much :)
