Sandy Neilson - undefeated in Olympic competition. Three gold medals...
100m freestyle was Shane Gould's signature event. But she finished with bronze at the 72 Olympics. Australia was shocked.
Well, here's one race where Shirley Babashoff had no reason to complain about, as she beat the two GDR women in the field.
Upset the favorites
SHANE GOULD,
IDOLE DE NOTRE ADOLESCENCE.
Films, phitos, images help me to record the names of the champions in my mind. 😉
The US swimmers tried to psych out Gould by wearing t-shirts with the phrase "All That Glitters is Not Gould". However, Gould would win three golds including the 200 and 400 freestyles as well as the 200 IM.
That is not why they wore those shirts. Contrary to some inaccurate claims in the time since. It was because the media coverage of women’s swimming was monopolized by stories about Gould in the lead up & during the Olympics (even in the US). The message was that Gould is a great swimmer but there are other wonderful swimmers competing in Munich too. All that glitters is not Gould=There are other athletes that also shine so let’s cover them. Unfortunately for Gould, even though she won 3 golds some coverage back home in Australia treated it like a disappointment because she was favoured for five golds.
@@coyote75 Thanks for the clarification.
BTW, you wonder how she would have done against the East Germans in 1976 had she not retired.
